Drabble:117

It was only after she entered her twenties that Rose began to talk to her mother. Like, really talk to her mother. About life, about their experiences, about right and wrong, and Strigois and raids, and family and love, etc.

Only then did Rose realize just how much like Janine she really was. Starting from their striking physical resemblance (hair color and accent aside) to their mannerism, Rose had so much in common with her mother that she was astounded. Maybe, astounded is not right, pleasantly surprised, more likely…

Like the way both Janine and Rose refused to drink coffee, just on principle.

Like the way both mother and daughter snorted slightly when they laughed heartily. Like the way they both were both strong and fragile, both brazen and shy.

The same way both Rose and Janine refused to admit defeat when faced with an improbable problem, the way they insisted on shouldering more than their fair share of responsibility, the fierce way they protected and defended their loved ones.

And then, of course there was the infamous Hathaway glare and acerbic verbal-flaying ability, the way the mother-daughter duo managed to get under each other's skin like no one else could.

More frivolously, they were similar in the way that both could go without make-up to the grandest of Moroi events (and still look attractive), but they refused to go without an additional stake concealed upon their bodies, the fact that they both liked 'oldies' music (Rose, very recently only, thanks to a certain Russian playing it on the radio every morning) and fruit smoothies and exotic perfumes and action movies and chocolate…

Or how they hated bullying, arrogance and double standards. Obviously, both of them were atheists, or rather agnostics, but they were open-minded enough to respect others' choices and beliefs. Neither of them liked to display their emotions in public, either.

But just because they were similar didn't mean they didn't have their-very many-differences…because they did.

For instance, Rose believed in familial peace, whereas Janine was all for self-sufficiency. Janine liked muted, soft colours whereas Rose's color palette ran a little too close to Abe's, ranging from bold shades to fluorescents. Rose was a Class-A hellion whereas Janine was a model student and guardian. Rose believed in keeping touch with her vast friend circle, but Janine was more wary about that. Rose immersed herself headfirst into situations whereas Janine observed from the sidelines before committing herself. Rose preferred and loved junk foods or home-cooked meals, while Janine could survive on canned and frozen goods for days without complaint. Rose amused herself by pushing people right up to their breaking points, whereas Janine enjoyed a far-more-straightforward and open intellectual showdowns above others…

All, in all, both Hathaway women were infinitely different, but in spite of their age difference and the dissimilarity in their upbringings and clashes and life experiences, they were startlingly similar. Really, the apple never does fall far from the tree…

On Xmas day and for most of Boxing Day, I couldn't log onto this site, so I was unable to upload a Christmas-centric drabble, so sorry about that. And this one was a little shorter than most of my drabbles (or rather ficlets, as the piece-lengths would suggest), but I promise to upload another one by tomorrow or at max, the day after.
Either ways, thank you for reading and don't forget to review!

Happy Holidays everyone! Cheers!
