A/N- So I felt bad for leaving you guys for so long, so I managed to whip a little something else up for you this weekend. For me Derek's birthday just seemed to fit in February, I feel as though he was a belated Valentine 's Day present for his parents which is why he was always so romantic and Mcdreamy. I had a lot more fun writing this than the other chapters so I really hope you like it!
Derek Shepherd was, for the first time in weeks, not woken by the feeling of his fiancée sprinting from their bed and into the bathroom, but rather by the surgeon straddling his waist and wafting what seemed to be a fresh mug of coffee under his nose. He blearily opened one eye to see Meredith grinning down at him, her hair tied back the way she did after she was done throwing up but having not showered yet. He grinned back at her, he loved the way she looked early in the morning, fresh and pure and utterly beautiful. He could definitely get used to waking up like this.
"Happy Birthday!" she exclaimed, placing the coffee in his hand as he propped himself up on the pillows. "39 already!"
"All right rub it in," He grinned kissing her gratefully. It had been a long time since he'd been excited about what the day would hold on his birthday. Surgery didn't take breaks to celebrate special days, and neither did he, but today he got to scrub in with Meredith and she'd promised him that even after their marathon evening on Valentine's Day, just two days previously that there would be lots of sex that day. It took a few seconds for Derek to register the time on the clock on his nightstand. Meredith was late for rounds and if they didn't get a move on they'd miss their spot in surgery too. "We really gotta go Mer." He insisted, moving to get up from underneath where she was still straddling him. She pushed him back down with a single finger, silencing his protests with another kiss.
"Calm down, you have the day off, I agreed it with the chief weeks ago, I just used scrubbing in together as a ploy to throw you off the scent."
"What scent?" he asked tilting his head and furrowing his brow slightly.
"I have the whole day planned, starting with something long and slow," she purred into his ear, pressing her breasts against his chest. Derek grinned and rolled the two of them over so that he was on top of her. He'd barely been awake ten minutes, and already he was having the best birthday ever.
Having gone two long slow sensual rounds in bed, and one quickie in the shower, the pair ambled down the stairs to an empty kitchen complete with a large paper bag on the table. A bag from the very same restaurant that found the two of them officially starting again. Derek pulled Meredith to his side, kissing her softly on the temple as his hands reached inside the bag.
"You got the fruit bowl." He smiled pulling the shrink wrap off the watermelon half and smelling the glorious combination of juices and fruits.
"I got two." She smiled, "I wasn't feeling the waffles and bacon today. Or the Prosecco that you hit me with when we were last there."
"Maybe our little one's a health nut too." he remarked kissing her neck as she poured two glasses of juice. "That'd be fun."
"Hmm, I think I'll stick with pizza and grilled cheese over Derek food." She told him, turning to kiss his lips.
"Derek food?" he chuckled as he grabbed plates and cutlery.
"Green stuff and whole-wheat and muesli, Derek food. All the flavourless crap you tried to make me eat when I first starting throwing up in the mornings." He pouted playfully before picking her up in his arms, lowering her towards the floor and kissing her with everything he had. As she panted for breath, gripping his arms so that she could stay on her now jelly filled legs.
"Well all that good stuff made me into the sex god that stands before you." He joked. "Made me virile enough to put that baby in your belly. So I'm betting you'd much prefer the healthy snacks stay." Meredith purred at him, fighting the urge to mount him against the kitchen counter. Instead bending down to get a pair of napkins from the bottom drawer, and wiggling her ass in front of him, before turning around a licking her lips, sitting down and spooning the fresh fruit into her swollen lipped mouth. Derek sat across from her, mimicking her actions, and trying to control the bulge in his boxer shorts, his eyes never once leaving hers. She finished the fruit in her own bowl, stealing several strawberries from Derek's before getting up from her chair and slinking towards the sink, licking her spoon seductively before placing it in the bowl, and walking behind Derek's chair to wrap her arms around his neck, kissing his light stubble, causing his shorts to strain even more.
"Bedroom?" he suggested, but Meredith shook her head.
"Nope," she giggled, "We have somewhere to be." Derek groaned but reluctantly followed her towards her car. He hated the juddery, rattling machine, wondering how it still managed to drive forwards but he got in reluctantly wondering where on earth she could be taking him to.
At first he thought it might be the hospital, but after she turned off just minutes away from it, he became puzzled once again. It wasn't the space needle either or any of their usual dating haunts though the route felt oddly familiar. As they pulled up next to a building he couldn't help but recognise, a boyish smile lit up his face.
"You brought me to see the fish?" he asked eyebrows raised, "Without me having to drag you? Wow it must be my birthday."
"Oh shush. We took a little longer Er… getting ready than I'd planned so we only have a couple hours, and you can guarantee the minute I hear the water I'm gonna need to pee." Meredith told him bluntly, along with her mood swings, Meredith's verbal filters had also completely disappeared, which had been both hilarious and terrifying, but somehow it made him love her more.
"If you knew you'd need to pee then why did you pick here, why not the space needle or somewhere like that?" Meredith looked at the floor before taking a breath and looking him in the eye.
"The first time you drove me to the land, we had to come past it in the car. You pointed it out to me as if I'd know what it was, and it was the first time I opened up to you about my childhood. And months ago when we came in with all the kids running around and that couple got married, that's when I knew that I wanted both a marriage and children with you. I called them to see if they were free for our wedding, I figured I could maybe get used to the idea eventually because it would make you happy, but they didn't have dates that would fit in with us and the hospital before I was too big to fit into anything, so I figured we could stand at the little altar or something and get our picture taken with the sharks. We don't have to say anything, but I thought it might be nice. If it's too cheesy I'll tell the guy to skip it and we can go to lunch early." She rambled, her eyes almost beginning to well up at the grateful look in his eyes, the look that said I love you more than it is even possible to express.
"It's absolutely perfect Meredith, I can't believe you even remember all of that, that you planned this. You amaze me, you really do." He wiped his eye on the back of his sleeve before grabbing her hand and walking her into the entrance, where they were greeted by Stefan, the man whom Meredith had arranged the visit with.
"Hello Dr Grey, Dr Shepherd, it's nice to finally meet you. Here is everything you need to know about your visit today, and your photograph is scheduled for twelve, enjoy your visit." Stefan greeted, shaking both of their hands before handing them the literature about feeding talks and times and general information about some of the species contained within.
Meredith watched with glee as Derek pointed out the various fish and their names, regaling her with all kinds of trivia. Normally it bored her to tears listening to him talk fish, but today all she could think about was how wonderful it would be to bring their child here in a year or two, how amazing it would be to see the two of them getting excited over the tanks together. She really couldn't wait. Often a little girl with blonde pigtails popped into her head when she imagined their baby, but a little dark haired boy would be equally as wonderful. Either way he'd make a wonderful father, and she couldn't imagine a better person to be going through this with.
Before they knew it, it was almost twelve and time to be heading towards the area that they used for wedding ceremonies. They opened the door and gasped at the display that had been put on for them. Flowers and ribbons adorned the sides of tanks, and an altar had been set up for the picture, complete with Stefan in a suit acting as minister in front of a menacing looking shark.
"Was there anything you wanted to say to each other before pictures?" The photographer asked, Meredith about to say no when Derek jumped in.
"Actually yes, if that's alright?" The photographer nodded, and Derek took Meredith's hands in his. "Meredith, this day has been utterly perfect, and not because you brought me a wonderful meaningful breakfast and brought me to such a special place in our relationship, and planned the day for us. You make every day perfect, by waking up, and choosing to be the one I get to spend my life with, to have children with, and grow old with. I can't even begin to describe how much you mean to me, how much our family means to me. You are my world Meredith, and you are my home, no matter where life takes us or what it throws at us, as long as I have you, I'll be the happiest man in the world." He wiped away Meredith's tears before reaching for his own, stopped by a kiss from Meredith, a moment that the photographer caught on camera, breaking apart, he snapped the look of love shared between them, and the utter joy on their faces as they looked at the camera for the first time. Even Stefan looked close to tears, the beautiful connection they shared more than obvious to him.
They finished their tour of the underwater world, and headed to the gift shop where Meredith picked up a tiny stuffed shark as a souvenir for the baby. She knew it was early, that she showed very few outward signs of being pregnant yet, but nonetheless, he or she was there with them in that moment, and they deserved to be acknowledged. Stefan came out with their pictures, having been unable to choose just one, so giving them the remaining few as a gift. Gratefully they headed back out towards the car, Meredith once again at the wheel ready to take them to lunch, their day far from over yet.
It wasn't hard to guess where they were going when they boarded the ferry, but Derek was confused for a few moments when Meredith didn't immediately take the road that headed to his land. She took a familiar left hand turn, and they found themselves at a tiny little restaurant, where they'd shared many a meal at early in their relationship. Naturally they were at their usual table, overlooking the water, and tucked away from the other diners. Lunch was picked for the pair of them by Derek, combining Meredith's love of take out with his health conscious nature, by sharing a creamy cheese pasta to start, a southern fried chicken salad for their main course and a very large slice of strawberry cheesecake for dessert. They left full and happy, and very much ready to go on back to the trailer and the site of their new home.
"So I called the contractor." She told Derek as the Jeep rumbled along the wet earth, and he said that so long as we don't touch the electricals just yet, we can get a look at the house. It's pretty much finished other than all the decorating. It's kind of copying your new year's thing, but this is the inside, all pure and clean before we make our mark on it."
"You're kidding?" He exclaimed, genuinely shocked. "We can actually go in?"
"Yup," She told him biting her lip in the cute little way he loved. "I told them it was your birthday and promised to behave and he left a key under a pot for us. Ready to go see our new home?" His grin, and an arm around her waist was all the answer she needed.
Locating the key, Meredith slipped it into the lock and turned it, taking a deep breath as she pushed open the door, Derek close behind. Minus the few ladders that decorated the rooms, the whole space was bright white, the dust motes dancing in the sunlight that shone through the huge windows that Derek had insisted upon. The entire thing was breath-taking. Moving from room to room, they marvelled at the tiny details that had been each of their ideas, the whole thing coming together beautifully. The bathrooms and the kitchen were the only rooms that any sort of furniture, the big bathtubs and showers with room to share pleasing Meredith no end. By the time they reached the second floor, Meredith was already fighting tears, her head filled with images of their little family living and growing there.
"Shall we head into our bedroom?" Derek asked her playfully, clearly after teasing him this morning he was keen to finish what she'd started. Meredith nodded and followed him into the large room that would be theirs once it was furnished. Their old bedroom was nice, but this room was something else. The window overlooked Seattle, the city buzzing as they watched from the sanctuary of their room. Meredith could almost feel the baby in her arms being rocked to sleep as she watched the city, still alive even in the depths of night. Derek asleep soundly in their bed, or standing beside her, reminding her of how loved she was, it was beautiful and perfect, and never in a million years did she think it would even have come close to being true. Yet here she was in the empty room that would soon boast their furniture counting down the days until it became a reality.
"What are you thinking?" Derek asked gently, wrapping his arms around her slender waist and kissing her neck again as she leaned into him, her head against his chest.
"It's all so real." She whispered. "We're going to live here, and get married and then have our little one. I just didn't realise my life could be that perfect. It's just a lot is all." Derek turned to look at her face, tilting his head at her.
"Don't for a second think you don't deserve to be happy, Meredith. You have earned all of this, and you deserve all of the wonderful things that are coming our way, and when things don't go our way, we will get through them together. I love you so much Mer, and I am not going anywhere. Nothing you could say or do will ever change my mind. I promise. You me and bee that's what matters." He peppered kisses on her lips until she smiled, and wrapped her arms around his neck, swaying gently with him as he held her.
"Nursery?" She suggested, her head still buried in his chest. Derek loosened his grip, leaving one hand on her hip as they headed to the room that had been designated as the nursery. They paused outside the door, reaching for the handle together before stepping into the room that their child would sleep in soon. Bathed in light from another strategically placed window the room shone with promise for the future. A happy future, Meredith's childhood dreams finally coming true.
They stayed in the house until the sun began to go down, the sky filled with pinks and oranges as they strolled back to the trailer before it got dark. Meredith pulled the keys from her coat pocket, having taken them without Derek even realising days before. On the table were several wrapped presents and a bag containing more culinary delights for the evening.
"I had George drop dinner off at lunchtime, so it should just need heating up." She told him as she shed her coat and turned up the heating a little. Derek pulled the containers from the bag, sniffing the corner of each before smiling.
"Vegetarian lasagne." He commented, eyebrows raised, clearly impressed.
"And garlic bread and that humus dip you like with the crudités. Then I got us a little chocolate mousse for bed later." She winked at him as he quickly grabbed all of the containers and put them in the oven to heat through. He picked up one of his presents and shook it to see if it would rattle.
"You can open the rectangular one," Meredith told him, sitting across from him as he pulled it from the pile and slowly began to peel off the paper. He grinned when he saw the title of the book on top of the small stack Meredith had given him: 'The Expectant Dad's survival guide'. He looked at the spines of the other two as well, the traditional 'What to expect when you're expecting' which Meredith regularly told him off for stealing her copy from her nightstand, and a book on sex during pregnancy which he had a feeling would come in very useful in the coming months.
"These are brilliant," he grinned at Meredith, "thank you sweetheart, I love them and you, both of you."
"That's just the start," she remarked pulling a carton of sparkling grape juice from the refrigerator and pouring it into two glasses. "Open the small box next." He did as he was told, pulling an expensive bottle of cologne from the mountains of tissue paper inside.
"Meredith, this costs a fortune, I can't believe you." He got up to hug her this time.
"I know, but you smell so sexy when you wear it and my hormones wouldn't let me leave the store until I'd brought it." Derek laughed.
"Well we can't argue with the hormones can we?" he joked.
"No we can't," Meredith replied seriously. "And now that you've realised that, you can open the long box." She kissed him softly expecting him to return to his seat, instead he pulled her into his lap and opened the present revealing a plain white box. He pulled out the contents, freeing it from its bubble wrap prison.
"Yankees," he cheered softly, turning the travel mug over in his hands. "I didn't even know you could get these."
"You can't." she told him, "Well not top quality ones anyway, so I found someone who could print on the glass or Perspex or whatever it is, and brought a plain travel mug and took it to him with a picture and he printed it up for me. Apparently my mother's name does still mean something in Seattle. I can't have coffee, and I know you wanted to do the whole solidarity thing, so as a compromise, you can only drink it from there." She kissed his forehead as he turned it over and over in his hands. The oven pinged signalling that the garlic bread was finished heating up, so she pulled the crudités and humus from the fridge and placed them on a plate next to the one filled with garlic bread. "You wanna eat while you open the rest or wait?"
"Ooh, I want you in that bed as soon as possible so I'm going to have to keep opening while we eat, that's okay with you right?" He smiled playfully as she sat across from him once more.
"It's your birthday, you can do whatever you want, and that includes in the bedroom," she giggled handing him an envelope with his name written in her curly script. He opened the seal, pulling a card featuring the name of the local golf course on the front. He opened it to find a membership to the club he'd occasionally golfed at. "I know it's a little weird," Meredith defended, "But I know you liked to golf to relax back in New York, and there might be times when you just want to get away from me and the baby and have some time to yourself and so I thought maybe this would be a way for you to let of steam. It includes a guest pass too, so you can take Mark or one of your brothers in law or someone if you want."
"Or you?" He suggested. Meredith wrinkled her nose, the mere idea of golf boring her to tears.
"I guess," she replied "If there's no one else that can go instead." She giggled again as she brought a stick of humus covered cucumber to her mouth, licking her finger seductively as she got up to take the lasagne from the oven. As she plated up, adding a few salad leaves from the side salad she'd ordered, Derek opened his gift from his mom.
"Whoa," He gasped pulling the brochure from the wallet in the envelope.
"What?" Meredith asked as she set a plate in front of him, the vision of a housewife in the tiny trailer.
"She got me a race car driving day." He grinned like a boy at the gift in his hand. "I've wanted to do this for years, I can't believe she did this. How did she…?" He looked up at his fiancée's smiling face. "You helped her choose?"
"She asked for a suggestion so I gave her a list," She said, feigning innocence. "And I told her which one to get you." She admitted "You really like it?"
"I absolutely love it. I can't believe you'd let me do it though. It's booked for July, you'll be seven months by then."
"And what does that have to do with you going driving? I will still be working and probably still driving myself, and if not I can always hang out with Lexie or Cristina or head back up to the house and Iz can bake for me. Hell, I'll spend the day with Mark if it means you stop worrying enough to go enjoy yourself. And if it really bothers you I'll sit somewhere and watch you drive excessively fast on a dirt track. My blood pressure would be fine I'm sure."
"Okay, point taken." He chuckled. "It's a really great gift, thank you. I'll call mom to thank her in a little while."
"I knew there was something else we had to do. We'll do that while dinner is digesting, that'll mean I'm less likely to throw up on you during out marathon in a little while."
"That's the single sexiest thing you've ever said to me," he quipped as she shoved a huge forkful of the lasagne into her mouth, smiling fondly at her before kissing her sauce covered lips, managing to cover both of their faces in the tomato infused mixture.
"Less talking more presents," she ordered as she chewed. His sisters were also generous with their gifts, Kathleen giving him a top quality bottle of champagne, to 'celebrate moving in or the wedding, whichever comes first xxx', Nancy had given him a painting that her daughter Natalie had made of Seattle Grace. She was becoming enormously talented, and he felt rather privileged to have been given such a thoughtful present, already trying to figure out which room of the dream house it would look best in. Amy had clearly known about Carolyn's gift, mailing a pair of driving gloves that wouldn't have been out of place in a movie from the thirties along with a message that informed him that he was rapidly becoming an old man. He pouted at the sentiment, Meredith cheering him up by undoing a few buttons on her blouse while she finished her lasagne. Liz had combined sweet and silly presents with a t-shirt stating 'trust me I'm a neurosurgeon' and a scrub cap adorned with tropical fish just like those that they had visited that morning, Meredith's input again obvious.
Derek was fairly overwhelmed at the array of gifts he'd received, Addison favouring dinner and a fancy restaurant over presents, and the family often being short of money when he was a child. He'd never felt deprived, but he'd also never felt as spoilt as he did then. Meredith let him finish his dinner before heading to the closet to pull out one final gift and setting it in front of him. He looked at her with a puzzled expression that said she'd already gone to too much effort, but he graciously peeled away the wrapping, his jaw dropping when he saw the piece de resistance of Meredith's gifts, a top of the range digital camera that ran circles around the ones he'd been looking at for months. Lost for words he scooped her into his arms and spun her around before setting her down and kissing her as hard as he could, keeping her face in his hands as he pulled back and looked deep her deep in the eyes.
"What did I do to deserve you?" he asked her as he moved his hands to her waist. "You're beyond words Mer, you really are. All of this must have cost a fortune."
"I wanted you to know just how much we both love you, and in a few months you'll never want to put that camera down so you can get some practice in before you really need it. I know you wanted one, and so I got one. You're the most amazing man I've ever met and I'd give you the world if I could, but for now you'll just have to settle for me and bee, and everything today. I love you Derek, so much, and thank you for bee and the house and everything. I'd still be unlovable Meredith if it weren't for you, and now I have it all. You did that, and I can't wait until September when everything's in its place. The happy ever after thing is pretty fun. Right, now we have to call your mom so I can have dessert. I've been thinking about it all day." She pulled her blouse over her head to reveal some incredibly hot midnight blue negligee, and Derek swallowed thickly, praying that his mother didn't want to talk for too long.
True to her word, after a brief chat with Carolyn, Meredith gave Derek complete full reign of the bedroom, getting into positions that even she didn't know she could get into, losing count of the number of orgasms the pair of them had. Once they were both sated, and seemingly exhausted, they headed for the shower, Derek getting out first and leaving her to finish up. As she came out of the shower, she wrapped herself in the fluffy towel that Derek used to save for her when she stayed in the trailer, drying herself before dropping it on the floor. She walked out into the trailer in search of her bag, where she'd put the creams and lotions that formed her nightly routine when she wasn't too exhausted to complete it. As she reached for her lavender body lotion, and the cocoa butter that she had insisted on buying for her stomach once they left the hospital after the first sonogram, Derek's breath caught in his throat. There clear as day on Meredith's torso was the tiniest little pouch. He continued staring and Meredith frowned at him.
"What?" she snapped frowning at him as he walked over to her, pulling her in front of the mirror.
"Look," he said hoping she'd see the same thing he did.
"What?" she said before looking at her reflection a little more closely, realisation washing over her face.
"Baby," he whispered, as she began rubbing her palm over the almost non-existent bump. She grinned at Derek and reached for his hand, placing it over her bare stomach. He leant into her kissing her forehead as he looked at the two of them in the mirror.
"Baby," she whispered back. So tiny, and fragile, yet already the centre of their world. Derek honestly thought that nothing could top Meredith's surprises today, but at just nine weeks gestation, their child knocked it straight out of the park, there was nothing that would ever top that day, the day that for the first time, he truly felt like a father.
A/N- I do love a bit of fluff, especially when Meredith is romantic too! Reviews would be mind blowingly wonderful, so if you get a moment please leave a comment. I shall try for an update in a week, but I can guarantee it will not be as long as it has been just recently! And also, i do apologise if the spelling is a little weird, i alternate between American English and English English which i know is confusing, but i will try and get some consistency from now on!
