Weiss thought of turning back.
A small part of Weiss was constantly telling her in her mind to tell Ruby to turn back. Within minutes of hearing the howl, Ruby and Weiss were on the streets of Vale, searching for the source. Ruby had made a decision to not wake up Blake and Yang for the mission. After all, if it was one Beowolf, Ruby and her would be able to handle it.
As they sped through the streets, Weiss' thoughts turned to what Ruby had said to her earlier that day. Ruby said the she loved Weiss. But it was not the type of love that Yang and Ruby shared as sisters, this was genuine love. A few minutes ago, Ruby was a stuttering mess; her face was red as her cloak. But now, determination replaced all of that rather quickly.
"Hey Ruby, about earlier tonight."
Ruby stopped and turned, catching the Schnee off guard.
"Weiss. What I said earlier tonight is how I feel. But we can't talk about that now. We need to keep focused on the mission at hand.
Ruby then turned and ran again. Weiss followed shortly thereafter. Now Weiss knew why Ruby was chosen to be the leader of the team. Whenever a situation arose that involved the lives of civilians being as risk, Ruby would be willing to place everything else aside and save them.
When both Ruby and Weiss arrived at the square, the first indication that the creature was here were all the bodies. Five different bodies were lying on the ground, surrounded by a pool of their own blood. To Ruby, the sight of the dead disgusted her. The air smelled of iron. Weiss, while as mortified as Ruby was with such a terrible sight, began to smell the blood. Unlike Ruby, Weiss did not smell anything foul. The smell was…inviting. Weiss quickly shook herself out of her stupor to see Ruby approaching a man, who had large claw marks on his abdomen.
"Sir, it's okay. Me and my friend are huntresses. Where is this creature?" Ruby asked.
The man looked up, couching and winching as he did, as if every movement he made hurt him.
"That…thing…" He coughed.
"It's down….Main…Street…"
The man did not move or breathe again.
"Damn it." Ruby cursed, catching Weiss off guard. She had never heard Ruby swear before. Weiss watched as Ruby unfolded Crescent Rose, changing the weapon to its scythe form.
"Let's go. If we hurry, we might be able to stop it before it hurts anyone else."
The girls were about to run for Main Street when a large and piercing howl rang through the air. The creature was coming back. Then, out of the darkness, the creature emerged. It was no Beowolf.
It stood somewhere around six feet tall. Its fur was black but it lacked the white and red bone patterns one would find on a creature of Grimm. It stood on both of its back legs. Beowolves typically ran on all fours, rarely standing on two legs. Its teeth were light and gleaming in the moonlight, as if they were finely sharpened daggers. The creature resembled a wolf, but was neither a Beowolf nor a wild dog. Its blood red eyes bore into the two girls, analyzing them for any sign of weakness.
Weiss was instantly cautious.
"Ruby, I have a plan."
"What is it?"
"We should keep at a distance, hit with everything…"
"Look out!" Ruby screamed as she pushed herself and Weiss out of the way. The creature was barreling towards them. Guess it was tired of waiting.
Both girls moved to the rear of the creature.
"Ice Flower!"
Ruby had called out their formation name. In a quick instant, Ruby changed the scythe to its rifle form and Weiss moved a glyph over the barrel of the gun. Ruby then began to fire off rounds, which were instantly converted to ice. The ice bullets hit the creature in several places. But it only seemed to freeze its legs to the ground.
"Break!"
When Weiss dematerialized her glyph, Ruby began to fire regular rounds at the beast. Weiss watched as Ruby pumped more and more shells into the wolf, when finally, she depleted her clip.
Then, with a mighty roar, the monster burst from the ice that had entrapped its feet only moments ago. That was impossible. But then, something even more disturbing happened. The large hole in the creature's abdomen started to close and heal. Within a matter of seconds, the wound was gone, but the creature seemed to be pissed.
Ruby then made one mistake. That was all it took.
Before Weiss could shake herself from the shock, Ruby changed her weapon to scythe form and began to run at the creature.
"Ruby, wait!"
As Ruby approached the creature, she used her semblance and recoil from Crescent Rose to leap over the creature's head and began to slash at its exposed back. However, the creature did not seem to be phased by the attack. The monster turned around and swung its claws in an arc, but by then, Ruby had dodged it and began to attack its front.
For a minute, Weiss began to think that Ruby would have a chance.
She was wrong.
In one swift move, the creature grabbed onto Ruby's arm and squeezed with its claws. Ruby began to scream as the claws began to dig into her flesh.
"You bastard!" Weiss screamed as she launched herself at the beast. She found that she was enraged by the fact that Ruby was in pain.
But before Weiss could make contact, the beast swiped at her with its free arm, causing Weiss to block it. The force of the swipe caused her to fly back several feet.
When Weiss recovered, all she could was watch in horror as the monster dug its teeth into Ruby's shoulder.
Ruby let out an ear piercing scream. She hated to hear her teammate in pain.
But to Weiss' continued horror, it began to shake Ruby back and forth like a rag doll. Weiss began to feel her blood boil. At this point, Ruby's scream now sounded like a horrible mix a scream and a sob. Weiss watched as the creature threw Ruby out of its mouth and ran off into the darkness.
At the instant, Weiss ran over to Ruby, who was lying on the ground, surrounded by her own blood. Her breathing was heavy and her eyes were streaming tears. Weiss looked at the injury. A part of shoulder was gone, exposing the wound the night air.
"Weiss…"
"Ruby, don't move okay." Weiss said, attempting to keep her leader calm. The sound of a distant ambulance was on the way.
"Weiss… it hurts… please make it stop."
Ruby no longer sounded confident or brave. She now sounded like a scared child, who was crying for her mom and dad. Weiss had to restrain herself and keep herself from crying. Then an idea crossed Weiss' mind. She could turn Ruby into a vampire. She would no longer have to suffer. She would be immortal. She …she…
Weiss began to think about herself. She had found that her mouth was watering from the sight of her hands covered in blood. Weiss realized that Ruby would have an insatiable appetite for blood. She simply could not bear that thought. She would have to condemn Ruby to a very terrible way of living.
By that time, Ruby had closed her eyes. Weiss felt her hands move up to Ruby's heart. It was beating. Though it was beating rather slowly. Soon, the ambulance arrived and found Weiss unable to leave her friend's side.
"Miss, we will see what we can do." The paramedic said as they loaded her onto a stretcher. The paramedics allowed Weiss to ride up in the front the car, which was speeding towards the Vale hospital. In the meantime, she called Yang and Blake on their scrolls. When she told them the news, Yang face dropped and said they would meet her there. The events tonight left Weiss physically and mentally drained.
They arrived at the hospital within a few minutes. Ruby was being taken to emergency care.
"Miss, could you please go to the waiting room?" the doctor said as the doors to the emergency room closed. Weiss, of course, showed herself to the waiting room and sat on one of the empty chairs. Suddenly, a slew of terrible thoughts entered her mind. She thought back to when she wanted to drink Ruby's blood. She was mortified at herself for wanting to do that.
When she made sure no one was with her, Weiss began to sob…
