They'd met when she'd been a teenage rebel, heart set on defying the authorities while protecting her best friend at any cost. He'd been cold and closed-off, still not recovered from the loss of his best friend. They started as teacher and pupil, then became confidants and friends, and then lovers. They'd survived a world of angst, first denying their mutual attraction, then making their way back to one another.
Of course there'd been happy moments-a hundred kisses and caresses, declarations of love and faith, of secrets and road-trips and dates and raids. She'd mellowed a bit after spending so much time with him, and he'd learned to open up again. They'd had little fights too, about testing their limits, about grocery bills and stubbornness and little-nothings, but after a few bumps in the road, they'd learned that-together-their love could conquer all...
Rose had found her family in him, someone to belong to, to trust and come home to, and it was something she'd never had before. Dimitri, on the other hand, had found absolution-she was his saving grace, the one who helped heal him, the beacon of hope that kept him moving forward…and running back to her. Time-after-time….
People were people, and they often spread hurtful rumors about the couple, but Dimitri and Rose never shirked their duty. They protected their moroi with their lives and were fully dedicated to their jobs, but in their rare off-times, they weren't afraid to bring on the PDA….to hell with the bigots!
It had been about 6 years since they'd met and fallen for one another, 4 since they'd been living together and 2 months since Rose had graduated. They were lovers and best friends, and today, standing in the church of St Vlad's, they were about to be bound for life.
Dimitri had his hair pulled into his customary ponytail and was wearing the duster Rose had saved two months' salary to buy; and she was dressed just as casually, in jeans and a frilly-top, hair let loose, just how he liked it. Neither paid heed to Father Andrew's words as he spoke about the responsibilities of marriage, because they could see their future in each other's eyes. Both dhampirs had identical beaming smiles on their faces and their eyes never shifted from one another.
Some of their friends sat in the pews of the church and the ceremony itself was being broadcasted to Vika's PC-for the viewing pleasures of the Belikovs-and to Abe's, who weren't able to attend the wedding that the couple had spontaneously decided upon, just but two hours ago…
Lissa was full-out sobbing and Janine Hathaway-guardian extraordinaire-was red-eyed. They, of course, were here for the Queen's annual visit to the academy. The female guardians present weren't much better, dabbing tissues to their eyes. The males were slightly discomfited by the waterworks, but they couldn't be any happier at two of their own getting a thoroughly-deserved happy-ending.
Dimitri started paying attention-finally-when the priest neared the end of his speech, because it was Dimitri's turns to speak his vows. He kept it simple, promising to love and honor her and even cook for her-because she kinda sucked at it-for however long he lived. Rose went grand, sharing anecdotes, extolling his virtues and paraphrasing his favorite love song, and promising to be his and to give him all she had, because she could never find anyone better to spend the rest of her life with.
Amidst their audience's tears, they exchanged simple wedding bands, which had been engraved with each other's names, and smiled as they confidently declared their 'I do's.
But before they could get to the good part-the make-out session-Lissa suddenly raced to the makeshift altar, gathering her blue silk scarf and fashioning it into a veil over Rose's head, much to the audience's amusement. Rose tolerated it with humor, and squeezed Lissa's hand when she murmured 'that's your something blue, new and borrowed. I guess everything else will have to count as something old'. As quickly as she'd come, Lissa retired to her seat, already planning Rose's reception party, which she'd been allowed to plan.
And then, before Father Andrew could utter one word, Dimitri leaned down to his Roza and removing her temporary-veil, he kissed her breathless amidst a cacophony of catcalls and cheering. Then, joining their hands, Dimitri and Rose faced the world together-how they always had so far-but this time, as man and wife.
Here's to happy endings!
