Chapter 4
Cat awoke to the smell of fish cooking over an open fire. She slowly sits up, and a yawn escapes her mouth, but she ignores it as she shakes stiffness from her muscles.
In the back of her mind, images of faces that felt familiar to her faded away into the dream that they had emerged from, like a mist in a harsh sun. Looking over to the source of the smell, she sees Trina sitting hunching over a small fire, as she notices her cooking a fish that obviously she stuck through with a stick.
Trina notices glances realizes she has a audience now, and turns her head over to Cat, slightly smiling at the now woken up raven haired girl who is apparently walking over despite the obvious discomfort she lookes to be in.
"How does your leg feel?" Trina, asks her.
Cat stops for a moment to take notice of a clean cut that apparently was clean and wrapped with care. Cat then looks back up to Trina biting her lip in the process possibly from guilt. Of course Cat felt remorse of how she treated Trina in the early hours of the morning after running from the wild dogs but she sure as hell wasn't going to apologize either.
She took a deep breath and just turned towards the fire, then glances up at the tanned skin girl."So how did you get the fire going?" She asks her.
Trina's once smile disappeared and a scowl appears at the pale burned girl. Sighing toward the pale girl she responds, "Well in all honesty I went back to where the stone pillar was, you know where we were attacked and found out that the stone pillar, was in fact a huge flint."
The dark haired girl blinks a few times and starts to chuckle to herself, "Whoops, Imagine that."
"I found some broken fragments from the pillar and managed to use it to start the fire. " The brunnette finishes as turns the fish on its other side.
The pale girl watches the brunette in awe, she was surprised that the girl knew about that sort of thing. "Okay," the dark haired says, "So how did you manage to catch the fish?'
Trina smiles sheepishly at her question and responds quietly, "I have no idea. I just know. Maybe I had someone teach me or maybe I was in the girl scouts for all I know. Not really sure. I just used the piece of the fragment and sharpened my stick which is now " Trina pauses and grabs her once wooden stick which now looks sharp and pointy.
"Good for hunting or breakfast?", she responds still smiling at the dark beauty.
Cat gave Trina a slight smile at her response. She sighs as her stomach growls and rubs her stomach.
She looks up at Trina who in return hands her a piece of fish. "Here you need to get some strength since we need to find better shelter for the night. Staying here probably is not wise..."
Cat agrees and gladly takes the meal. She slowly felt her strength coming back as she ate the fish in just under a few bites. It wasn't half bad, she thought to herself, which for some strange reason surprises her. Looks like Trina wasn't such a bad cook.
Cat decided to try to be nicer to the brunette who did clean her up and fed her, so she decided to make small talk.
"Hey, this is not bad. Best fish I can remember eating. " She looks up and at the same time notices Trina smiling at her, and she looks pleased with herself. It was like Cat's opinion matters to her very much.
After finishing their meal and wiping their mouths, Trina stood. "Okay we need to find a spot with more secure area or better yet, somewhere we can have more protection from those dogs. Maybe we can build a hut or stakewall."
Cat nods her head, then scrambles to her feet. Yeah I agree. We better get moving, there is no sense in us hanging around this creepy area." She felt chills just thinking about the early morning ordeal with the wild beasts in the area. "We need a better higher location to keep safe."
Trina at that moment put the fire out as best as she could manage, making sure it wouldn't catch the area on fire. After shaking off some dirt off her legs, she glances up at Cat, "Do you think we should just keep following the river? Right now it seems to be a pretty good landmark to follow."
Cat actually giggles some which makes Trina smile really wide. "You don't really have any idea what you are talking about, do you?" Cat asks smiling at Trina.
Trina smile slowly vanishes feeling a bit insulted, "Hey...I just well...ugh! Fine. Not really. But it kind of sounds like a good plan." She collected the flint pieces she had found around the rock and tied them in some cloth she had. "I guess if these get lost, we can come back and get more, but..." She looks up at Cat with a slight look of fear, "this really is not the place I wish to return to."
Cat nods , "Yeah I don't disagree with you there. Lets go then. You got a point about the river, It is a direction as any."
They both left the pillar and clearing behidn as nature took hold to remove the evidence of their presence. As they entered the jungle again, Cat spares one last glance back at the eerie unnatural stone and once again gets chills.
Cat jumps up and manages to pull a coconut off a tree. She squeezes it in both her hands, which makes it snap the bristle outer shell and reveals the smooth inner shell. She discards it over her shoulder and went to work on the inner shell.
Trina glances back when she hears the snapping sound then whistles appreciativley as the shell brakes like so many twigs in Cat's hands. The "milk" spills out onto the ground as she nearly shatters it and offers her a piece.
Trina gives Cat thanks as she takes the offering. She felt like something felt off or not right about things, but she quickly dismisses the feeling. It can be a number of things, but until something or someone made itself evident, she could only try to relax in their situation. She takes the coconut piece and bites into it and scraping the meat off with her teeth.
"You know, " she says , while still munching, "I think we are going uphill."
"No shit. I could have told you that about a mile ago" Cat stops and points up through some trees. "If you would have looked, you would see the stupid mountain right in front of us."
Trina stops and looks where Cat was pointing, there was indeed a mountain looming above them. It appears that they would climb it at some extent soon. "Well I guess I can't be as perfect as you are. I've got other things on my mind, like figuring out who I am! You forget that I too have been very helpful. Like fixing wounds and making fires!"
Trina then lets out a disgusted breath, at Cat, and even herself, then turns and runs up ahead. Cat sighs and realizes how snapping she sounded. Ugh stupid, stupid. "Trina! Wait up! I didn't mean it like that!"
Trina stops for a moment but does not turn around, "Oh? And just how did you mean it then?" she replies with hurt in her voice.
"I only just meant that...Just...I don't know." Cat stops herself for a second,
" I just didn't mean it the way I said it though."
Trina sighs in frusteration, "I actually understand. Its hard for me too...remainnig calm under our current circumstances. I mean something inside makes me want to crawl into a hole and just stay there, not believing what is happening. I have to force myself to just keep going, not focusing too much on the reality of the situation, otherwise, I guess I may go insane."
Cat nods once, "I know and I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to sound so...mean? Maybe it is the heat or something. " For some reason, Cat didn't believe that. She herself felt that it was natural for her to act that way.
"I shouldn't have been so touchy. I know you didn't mean to sound so...mean. "For a moment Trina had to think about what she said for a second not sure of herself of her answer. But she keeps on going, " No harm done."
At this they both continuing staring at each other in silence which made things start to get akward. Cat then clears her throat to break the silence then says, "Next time, I'll...I'll try not to get so snappy or mean about it. I think we are both on the edge from all o this. Truce?" Cat asks a small smile forms on her lips.
"Sure...yeah we both just need to know when our lines have been reached and take care in not over stepping over them." She looks back at the mountains then, "I'm sure we can find something of interest there." She turns back to Cat now smiling at her.
"Then we go." Cat starts walking toward the path again, trying to retain her center of calm.
Okay...its been 7 months from when I wanted to update...but...I have good reasons! First off thank you for lovely messages and reviews, they are the reason I wanted to keep writing this.
So reason for long wait... I lost couple of friends in November and December Then my job gave me a promotion which made things more busy for me. So basically I can only read your stories, and never have time for my own.
By way I'm going to Ireland in November! My job is sending me! Whoot! Anyhoo I will try to update more frequently again. I'm actually working on the next chapter already ^_^ I hope this one even though its quite short is okay.
Take care my friends.
