As soon as Len went inside, I followed him in and closed the door behind me. For some reason the castle had a strange atmosphere. Most of the lights were turned off and there was no one in sight. If it weren't for me knowing that this was a grand a palace, I would've thought that I was inside a haunted mansion.
Len finally turns to me.
"Go to your room, hurry." He said.
I nodded and we split into different directions. What was going on? And who in the world was the Red Queen? At some point I thought Teto would know a thing or two about it. I skipped my room and headed towards hers and knocked softly.
That's when she opened the door carefully.
"I'm glad you're here, come inside Rin." She said worriedly.
I followed her inside and observed her restlessness and worry but that soon changed when she suddenly glares at me.
"Where were you?" She asked, clearly mad at me.
"Nowhere." I smiled nervously.
"Nowhere? And did you buy the things I asked you at nowhere?"
Shoot! I completely forgot about the groceries since a lot of stuff happened this morning.
"Sorry. I forgot."
"Well, it doesn't matter now" She said. "I think we won't have to cook dinner anyways."
"Hey Teto, Who is the Red Queen?"
Teto glanced at me suspiciously. She must know something!
"No clue." She answered blankly. I felt myself falling on her answer.
"You're kidding right? The smart-teleporting Teto has finally been outsmarted?"
She hits me. Wow, she didn't hold back on that one. Ouch.
"Watch your mouth." She said, annoyed. "And since when did start calling me teleporting Teto?"
"It was a joke." I said smiling and slightly crying from the pain.
"But-" Teto said, she looked like she knew something.
"Perhaps our Kingdom and theirs aren't in good terms?" She replied thoughtfully.
"Not in good terms?" I repeated.
She nods until she grabs my shoulders as she leads me towards the door.
"That's enough for the night, go back to your room." She smiled while pushing me until I was finally outside as she closed the door.
She must know something, she just isn't telling me! Well, as long as it doesn't concern me then everything is fine, right?
As I was about to return to my room, I heard a voice call for me.
"Hey." I heard a familiar voice.
As soon as I turned to see who it was, my heart sank in shock as I saw Len with a large bruise on the side of his face as if someone had punched him hard.
"Len, what happened" I approached him "Who did-"
"Its not your business, alright?" He said turning his eyes away from me "Just give me some extra sheets and I'll be on my way."
Why does he always say that? Can't he trust me at all?
I grabbed his arm forcefully as I pulled him inside the kitchen.
"Hey!" He said, struggling. "Let go! I only need some sheets!"
But just I ignored him like he always did to me.
When we got there, I opened a few drawers trying to search for it until I could pull out some bandages.
"Sit down."I said.
He looked confused when I asked him to do it but he sat on the chair anyway. I sat right next to him as I began ripping the bandage to shape his bruise.
"I'm really going fire you after this." He said. Although his voice was serious, his face was all red.
I grinned.
"So tell me what happened." I asked. "Who did this to you?"
"Why?"
"Come on, tell me." I said. "I told you my secret now tell me yours, you even promised to tell me what was going on."
It took a him several seconds and a deep sigh to answer me.
"Fine." He replied. "It was my father."
"Your father?" I responded in shock. "Why would he do this to you?"
He ignores my question. But as soon as I was done cutting up the bandage, I slapped him with it on the face. It manages to stick.
"Can't you see that I'm already hurt!" He yells in pain but I didn't feel bad one bit.
"Just tell me." I glared. He was obviously furious with but he still answered me.
"It's because of that hag." He said gripping his hands.
"The Red Queen?" I asked.
"Yes." He answered. "If only she would just stop bothering us then my father wouldn't have struck me."
Teto did say that the Yellow Kingdom wasn't in good terms with the Kingdom of the Red, but why exactly? It doesn't make sense. I've read the news a lot and there wasn't anything about it at all. I mean if I really cared about it.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't you know?" He said annoyed. "The Red, Blue and Green Kingdoms are allies."
Allies? What? I thought all four kingdoms were friendly with each other.
"So if we ever pick a fight with them we're obviously doomed."
"Then why did your father punch you?"
"I couldn't stay calm." He said. "I cursed at the queen when she insulted my father, that's when he threw the punch."
Len appeared clearly upset.
"It's all my fault." He said. "I deserved it."
"You were just standing up for what you believed in and protected your father." I respond. "I think that's quite brave of you."
I notice Len turn away from me quickly, hiding the red in his face. I could only grin. But after a while, I began to think about what Len said, the allies. Red, Blue and Green are allies meaning Yellow is all alone? Well, that isn't fair. But if it were true then Len was certainly right, if he tried to do anything to either of the three kingdoms especially to the Red Kingdom, then war is clearly in the picture and for sure our kingdom would lose without a doubt.
I smiled at him. He looked at me and started to get annoyed.
"Why are you smiling?" He said.
"Nothing." I replied. "You're actually pretty nice."
He blushed furiously.
"Shut up and go to bed." He said, finally marching away from me.
If only Len would be open to his feelings a little more then I would understand him a little better too. But I also liked this kind of Len.
The night was slow than usual, I kept thinking about what Kaito said to me earlier than evening. I kept of tossing and turning, unable to forget his words. Until I wake up from a daze when I hear my door knocking. Of course, the nocturnal person I am, I had no energy to wake up. I assumed that Teto would suddenly barge in and shove me out of bed.
That's when I heard the knocking outside my door. Here she comes.
"Five more minutes, please." I cover myself with the sheets.
I hear the door open as her footsteps grew closer to me. I brace myself for what's to come, but when I did, nothing happened.
"Teto?" I call to her as I uncover the sheets, realizing that the person before me wasn't Teto but Kaito.
"Ka-Kaito?" I stutter in surprise but he just smiled at me.
I feel my cheeks burn as I cover the sheets over me, I was wearing my night gown for crying out loud.
'Wh-What are you doing in here?" I asked angrily.
But he didn't respond, instead he pulls me out of the covers.
"What the-"
"Come, I have something to show you." He said, holding my hand tightly.
I looked out the window, noticing that it was still dark out.
"Are you crazy?" I said. "What are you scheming?"
"Just come and you'll see." He ruffles my hair and pulls me away without a care.
We went out using the backdoor, it was freezing and unfortunately, I was wearing a night gown and nothing to keep my feet warm since I was barefoot.
"Idiot! Just tell me!" I yell as I hold myself, keeping myself warm.
He just glanced at me and smiled as he took off his black coat and dropped it over my head. I just glared at him.
"Hurry or else we'll miss it." He said, holding my hand as he dragged me to God know where until we meet a small mountain path leading uphill.
I had no idea where we were going or why I was still following him up to this point, I could've just refused and stayed in my room but I didn't. Maybe that was Kaito's charm, he could convince just about anyone to follow him, and I was clearly under his damn spell. The grass under my feet was cold and wet, I didn't mind since I was used to running up and down dirty paths when I was little but what really made me stop was when the chilly breeze passed me. I should've changed first, despite wearing Kaito's large coat, it wasn't enough to keep me warm. I stop momentarily to catch my breath when suddenly I felt myself being lift off the ground by Kaito.
"You have no stamina at all." He teased. "This time, you'll be the princess and I'll be your servant."
All I could do was well, nothing. I felt my cheeks burn when I felt his warm chest against my body. Despite being extra weight to him, he kept running up towards the hill.
"Hey, where exactly are you taking me?" I asked him sheepishly. He was clearly exhausted by he just kept smiling like it was nothing. He must've been used to smiling when he really doesn't mean it.
"You'll see!" He said.
Next thing I know, we were finally on the top of a hill where there were bunches for greens and flowers around. Kaito slowly dropped me down the ground as he held my hand as we walked towards the edge where I could see the ocean. The water was sparkling blue, the sun had just risen just enough to shine the whole sea as the waves kept gushing rhythmically as it carried the breeze to us.
"Beautiful." I said as I kept my eyes on the ocean. That's when I glanced at Kaito who was staring at me.
"Why are you showing me this?" I asked nervously.
"I promised to myself that I'd bring the girl I love to this place and marry her." He said with a fumed expression on his face.
"Marry?" I could feel my cheeks burn once again.
"Rin." He called me as I locked eyes with his gentle ones. "I will say it again, I am in love with you and I mean it, I know I am. I don't want to wait for a long time to realize that, I'm far too impatient. That's why I'm letting you know that I am."
"I told you my answer." I said looking away. "I don't know what I feel about you. It's a strange feeling to know that you, you know, would like someone like me."
"Why wouldn't I?"
"I'm noisy, I'm lazy, I don't even like wearing dresses or doing any housework, basically a lot of things." I explained. I felt as if I was digging up my own grave. "I don't deserve you."
He could only chuckle.
"Well, that's too bad because I'm the same way too." He replied as he grew closer to me. "Except for wearing dresses, I wouldn't mind trying on one at least once."
I could only laugh at him.
"I'm not forcing you to answer me right away, but if you do feel something for me or nothing at all, I want you to tell me even if it will hurt me." Kaito answered. "Promise?"
I smiled at him, "Promise."
"Speaking of honesty, for a small girl you're quite heavy, aren't you?" He said with a grin.
"Idiot!"
