After a while, I began to realize that I had to back to the castle or else Teto would get mad at me for slacking off again.
"I should probably go." I said.
"Oh, of course. Maid duties." He smiled. "Shall I carry you back?"
"Please don't." I replied.
"Fine." He answered. "Well, goodbye."
Kaito ruffles my hair one last time but I kept my face down, unable to face him since I still feel my face flushing.
"Keep the coat." He smiled.
"Thanks." I replied as I walked down the hill.
The coat around me was still warm and gave off a strong mint fragrance that reminded me of him. I couldn't help but smile like an idiot. For a second, I felt as if the world had turned a bit brighter.
I finally reached the palace and just in time too since the Teto was nowhere in sight, probably still sleeping soundly. I quickly head towards my room and drop Kaito's coat on my bed. I was still smiling. Love might be a good thing after all.
After what just happened, I couldn't even go back to sleep so I wore my uniform and went to work. I did some light cooking for myself and cleared the alcohol ridden living room all by myself. For the first time, I felt so motivated.
"Well, this is a first." I heard a female voice. That's when I noticed Teto finally come out of her room with the sleepy daze in her eyes.
"Good morning!" I greet her with a bright smile.
"You do know there's still an hour before work oficially starts." She said. "Which means that anything you did just now, doesn't add up to the salary."
"What!" I cried in despair.
"Well since you're up and clearly in a good mood, why don't you do the grocery." She hands me a slip of paper but this time it was a bit longer than yesterday's paper.
"Hey, Teto." I said. "I think the paper grew."
"It's from yesterday's list, I just added a few things." She replied. "Hurry up, the market opens in ten minutes!"
She pushes me out of the door and closes it. I could only sigh. Well, at least it's still early. I'm sure that there won't be too many people there. But when I reached the market full of confidence, I soon realized that I was dead wrong. The place was packed even at the earliest hour. How in the world am I going to finish Teto's list! There was one way to do it, but it's the kind that I hate and that was lining up. Even if I tried sneaking my way through the lines, it wouldn't be easy since I was wearing a very gaudy uniform not to mention that it was from the palace itself. Anything I do wrong might affect them.
"No, please!" My blood quickly froze when I heard screaming from behind me. I turned back to see what the commotion was about.
"Please! Don't take her!" A woman cried pulling a younger girl away from a man. "Take anything, not my daughter!"
"It's your own fault for not paying your debt as promised." One of the thugs sneered. "This pretty girl of yours will do quite nicely."
"Mama!" The girl screamed reaching out for her mother. "Don't let them take me!"
Why won't anybody do something? Everyone was just staring and pretending not to see what was happening right in front of them. If it weren't for my uniform, I would have easily kicked his butt. My blood was starting to boil as both the two men laughed at the devastated women. That's when I reached for my shoe and threw it as hard as I could straight into the one of the men's face and fell onto the ground. I smiled in victory.
"Hey!" He yelled. "Who the hell did that?" The man sat up with a red spot in his forehead, I couldn't help but laugh at him.
That's when the busy people started to become quiet all of a sudden as they parted away to reveal me to him. Uh oh. The man's furious eyes locks with mine.
"You!" He stands up, and quickly heads towards me.
It was obvious that he was going to hit me so I braced myself for the impact. Well, it was fun while it lasted. I'm sorry Teto, I guess I won't be bringing the groceries again this time.
"Stop right there!" I hear a clear womanly voice behind me.
That's when I noticed the man fall onto his butt with fear in his eyes.
"Hurting women is the worse crime imaginable." She added.
As I turned my head to see who this powerful voice came from, I noticed her green hair and green eyes, someone I didn't expect would tell a man off with such a powerful and intimidating voice. Despite Miku's frail appearance, she had a stern expression with eyes full of fury. Was this girl really the princess I met the other day?
"Arrest this man at once!" She announced to one of her guards.
"Yes, ma'am!" The two guards answered in chorus as they held the thug by his arms. The thug's friend, clearly surprised, took off without him.
"Wait!" He yelled. "You can't arrest me! Those women owed me."
I watched as the girl and her mother reunite once again with tears in their eyes. I felt nothing but relief as I watch them embrace each other. A few moments later, I see Miku approach them, handing them a small sack. I couldn't hear them but the two women were grateful as they bowed to her. I could only assume that the princess gave them money to pay off their debt. Wow, who would've thought?
After that incident, everyone just went back to their own businesses as if nothing had happened. That's when I see Miku approach me with a gentle smile on her face.
"Ah!" I felt so flustered and bowed. "Thank you! I would have took quite a beating if it weren't for you, princess."
That's when I felt her hand on my shoulder.
"No need for you to bow." She replied as I raised to look up at her. "If it weren't for you throwing the first attack, I wouldn't have stepped up at all."
"Oh, right." I said. "My shoe."
She giggled.
"Vincent." She called out to one of her guards.
He handed her my shoe from the ground.
"I believe this was the weapon." She smiled and handed me my shoe.
"Thank you very much." I grinned right back as I got my shoe back.
The moment I crouched down to wear my shoe, she spoke once more.
"You look strangely familiar." Miku said as she examined my face.
"Well, that's because I'm a maid of the Yellow household ma'am." I replied quickly.
"Hmm, well that is true." She answered. "I must be mistaking you for the other maids, sorry."
"Don't sweat it." I replied.
"Would you like a ride? I'm heading there as well after all."
"Oh, That's too kind of you!" I said. "But you see I still have shopping to do so-"
"Shopping?" She repeated. "Not to worry."
"Vincent!" Miku called out again.
"Yes ma'am!" He answered with a salute.
"I have a favor to ask." She takes the slip from my hand and gives it to Vincent. "Would you mind staying here and buying the things listed here?"
"No ma'am" He replied, determined.
"After that, I expect you to deliver the goods back to the Yellow's Palace" She added.
"Yes ma'am!" He takes the slip and walks off. Wow.
"Since your shopping problem's been taken care off, I guess you can ride with me then." She smiled
"Yes." I answered.
Her small carriage stopped in the middle of the plaza, it looked like it came straight out of a fairy tale book. Guards surrounded us and escorted us inside as onlookers watched us with envy and awe. A princess' life must be nice. When the two of us were settled inside, we take off to the streets.
"Can you tell me your name?" She asked.
"Ri-Rin, my name is Rin." I answered nervously.
"Don't be scared." She was right. No reason to be afraid at all, I mean she did send a bad guy away but there was something frightening about Miku's personality that I couldn't put my finger on.
"Well, after what happened a while ago." She said. "I don't blame you."
"Supervising is tough in this place." She sighed, placing her palm below the side of her chin, looking to the distance. "Especially since the crimes that occur here are too common."
"Supervising?" I asked curiously. Why would a princess be supervising? That's when she looks back at me.
"Why, yes." She said. "I always visit the kingdom at least once a week, because father asked me to-"
Her eyes widen.
"Oh, God." Miku quickly covers her mouth. "I shouldn't have said that."
So there is more to it than I thought.
"Oh please, don't tell Len about this!" She said, holding on to my hands.
"If he knew, he would despise me." The girl pleaded.
"Don't worry." I said to her. "I won't."
"Thank you, Rin." She sighed in relief. "I was too careless, too open."
I still didn't understand why she would hide something like this. I mean, what's so bad about supervising anyway? And why on earth was Miku asked to do it in secret?
"Why are you supervising?" I asked casually.
"Well," She answered. "Basically I'm keeping a lookout for anything unusual."
"Unusual?"
"Yes." She added. "Besides the crimes in this kingdom, father wants me to check if the Yellow household is planning anything sinister-"
Her eyes widen again, realizing how much information she told me.
"Oh, gosh!" She cries. "Why am I like this?"
Planning something sinister? Supervising? I don't understand at all!
Before I could speak again, the carriage finally stops.
"We're here" She said. "Come."
Miku gets off first as I followed her nervously from behind.
This is all too complicated! But wait, why am I getting so involved in this, I mean their secrets don't matter to me at all.
"Rin? Is something the matter?" She stops to look back at me.
"No, it's nothing." I reply.
Once we were in front of the big palace doors, the guards pull them open to welcome us, well, specifically Miku of course. The second we entered, I see Len all dressed up as he came down the stairs. He was clearly surprised.
"Miku?" He said as reached the last step. "What brings you here?"
"Len." She smiled gracefully as she approached the stairs. "Wanting to visit as always of course." Wasn't she here yesterday?
Len smiled at her. I don't even know if he realizes that I was there.
"Come." He said. "Let's go to the living room and talk."
He showed him his arm and Miku held it as they walked to the living room. I could only sigh at the sight of Len's gentleman attitude.
"Rin!" Teto walks towards me. "Why were you with the princess?"
"She gave me a ride back." I said with a smile.
"No way!" She said. "How lucky are you?"
"The luckiest!" I teased her.
"Well." She continued. "You're very lucky today, a guard just brought the groceries I had asked you to buy earlier."
"I know right." I giggled. That's when I felt Teto becoming annoyed.
"Well, Miss Lucky." She said as she handed me a trey of sweets. "Here, bring this to our guest."
"It''s only fair that you serve her since today's your lucky day after all." Teto smiled at me menacingly.
I could only sigh as I entered the living room, the pair was sitting on the couch, talking about something fancy I guess.
"Excuse me." I said I place the tray on the small table.
On the tray was a plate of fresh cookies, an elegant teapot and two beautiful glass-like teacups.
"Why, that looks delicious!" Miku said with excitement.
I smiled.
"Len-sama, a guest has arrived." Teto came back. "It's Kaito, from the Blue Kingdom."
Kaito? I feel my cheeks burn as I remembered our encounter earlier morning. It was fairly obvious that Miku was very happy as she heard Kaito's name announced.
"Also, the king wants a word with you." Teto added.
"I'll be right back." Len got up from the sofa and followed Teto outside of the room.
"Alright!" Miku stood up with closed fists."This is my chance"
Was Miku going to confess? The thought of it pained my chest. What if Kaito suddenly changes his mind about me and goes for Miku instead, I mean she is a royal like he is. No way he's going to settle for a commoner like me. That's when I felt the urge to head outside. But the moment I stepped back, I felt myself bump against another person from behind me. When I looked up, I see familiar blue eyes and hair towering over me. My heart was racing.
"Rin." He said my name quietly.
I bit my lip trying hard to keep a fake smile.
"I have to go." I told him personally as I walk right past him. "I think Miku wants to say something to you."
"What?" He asked with a confused expression on his face.
He now turns to Miku who was clearly blushing furiously.
"Kaito-kun." She said.
"What is it Miku?" He smiled at her, like he always does.
I wanted to go out, to escape. I had no reason to be here. I have no right to be here.
"I-I-" I quickly turn away to exit the room, unable to take it anymore. But when I did, I see Len approaching.
Talk about bad time. I quickly place myself right in front of him, stopping him in place.
"Hi Len." I said, smiling at him.
"Get out of my way, Rin." He replied blankly.
When he tried to walk past me, I quickly block him with all my strength.
"What the hell, Rin?" He's clearly furious but it's for thee greater good. "What's the matter with you?"
"Fight me." I said, it was the only rational thing, I mean the only thing that I could think of.
Without any warning whatsoever, Len suddenly pushes me against the wall near the living room. I'm surprised that neither Miku nor Kaito noticed us at all.
"I win." He smiled with victory.
"I love you!" Miku finally said.
Len's expression froze as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"I've always loved you." She said.
He slowly pulls away from me with a sorrow and anger in his eyes.
"Len-"
"Well, I guess that's that." He scoffs as he marched upstairs.
"Miku." Kaito finally speaks. "I'm sorry but I'm in love with someone else."
My heart dropped with excitement but guilt was overcoming it since I knew how much bravery it took for Miku to confess to him, it was hard to feel happy when Len was completely devastated.
"I only see you as a little sister and not more than that." He added. "I'm sorry."
"I understand!" She said with satisfaction. "I just wanted to get that out of my chest as all!"
"Miku." Kaito responded.
"My, look at the time" Miku replied nervously. "I must return to father, it was nice seeing you again, Kaito."
That's when I hear her footsteps coming close. As I took one glance at her, I could see tears falling down her face as she reached the doors, exiting the Yellow palace for good.
