"I can't believe this," Audrey murmured for the fifth time. Cami had been counting. Since Elijah left, Audrey continued to spiral downward which made Cami jump into action. She grabbed a blanket from upstairs and started boiling hot water in a tea pot to help bring her out of her shock. Shortly after Elijah left them, Audrey remained hysterical for quite some time before becoming completely catatonic. She stared off into space, barely blinking and her eyes had glazed over. It took Cami a few moments to bring Audrey back, but she could only being to fathom how she was feeling.
"I'm so sorry, Audrey," Cami whispered and poured more tea into her cup.
Audrey's shaking hands lifted the mug to her lips and she took a few long sips. The tea burned her tongue and throat, but it paled in comparison to the pain she was feeling in her heart. Losing a member of her coven was pain enough, but losing a friend was even worse. Even with her help, Giuliana still perished at the hands of Monique. She hated herself that she had listened to Klaus and stayed at the compound. Perhaps if she had gone, Giuliana would still be alive.
The Blood Witch tugged the ends of the blanket around her, wrapping it around her sagging shoulders and she slumped back in her seat. She twiddled the Bloodstone necklace Giuliana had given her when she was hexed. The pair had an interesting beginning, starting off as enemies more than friends, but they grew to care for one another once they were both sure to be on the same side of things. Audrey's fingers slid over the cool stone and bit her quivering bottom lip. She'd always been bewildered how Giuliana had come to trust her. Coming to New Orleans after murdering her abusive father and burning her home to the ground, she trusted nothing and no one. Sure, she had given her trust to the Originals, but that circle of trust remained very small. Even today, she had that same paranoia of her trust being broken by someone, but that fear was erased when Giuliana came along.
"Will I ever not feel guilty?" Cami's sad eyes lifted at the question that was directed to her and she thought carefully before answering.
"In the beginning, you will. You'll wake up in the morning and you won't be able to get out of bed. You'll shield yourself from others, paranoid that history will repeat itself." She spoke softly. "But...one day, you'll wake up and you won't feel as bad as you did the day before. Each day will get easier and you won't feel so much pain and guilt."
Audrey blinked blankly and stared down into her cup. Swirls of herbs floated in the dark brown liquid as she contemplated Cami's words. She couldn't imagine a day where she wouldn't feel so hurt, but she had to hope for the promise of a day where she wouldn't be burdened by so much emotion. She swallowed down another mouthful of tea and placed the mug back down on the table.
"Thank you, Cami." Her words were nothing but sincere and the blonde smiled warmly back at her.
"If you ever need someone to talk to, you can always come to me," she said. "Or a drinking buddy."
The corners of Audrey's lips pulled up. "Definitely a drinking buddy."
"Then you know where to find me." Cami nodded.
The doors leading outside to the courtyard suddenly burst open and a strong wind howled from outside. The women stood and backed away, somewhat taken aback by what happened, but hopeful that Klaus and Elijah had come back successful. The winds wailed again, even louder than the last time and Audrey lightly nudged Cami behind her. Had Francesca come back for another go? Or did Genevieve and her coven defeat Klaus and Elijah and they were coming to finish off the rest of them? With a wave of her hands, Audrey closed the door and clicked the lock back into place.
"What the hell was that?" Cami breathed.
Audrey's eyes squinted towards the doors and she shook her head. "I have no idea."
"Do not fear me, young ones." An unfamiliar voice spoke softly and the women whipped around to face her. She was much taller than they were and slightly older. Long, dark braids weaved along her scalp and cascaded over her strong, broad shoulders. Her dark skin was covered by shreds of animal furs and strokes of colored paints decorated her face and chest. Audrey and Cami exchanged a curious glance with each other, clearly this woman was from another time and another world.
"Who are you?" Cami's voice came out much smaller than she'd hoped.
The woman took a few steps forward, making Audrey's shoulders tense. "I have told you that I do not wish to bring you harm."
"Since you won't tell us who you are. Why are you here?" The witch growled.
"I have come to give you a gift," she replied.
"I don't want it." Audrey hissed angrily. "Leave!"
A frown passed her lips and she clasped her hands in front of her. "Audrey, I know you do not want to trust me, but—"
"How do you know my name?" Audrey stepped on her words which made the woman smile again.
"I have been watching you for quite some time. Your magic has rivaled my own since you were very young," she said proudly.
The witch raised an eyebrow and met the unknown woman halfway. "You're a Blood Witch?"
The woman nodded and held out her hands, silently asking Audrey to place hers there. Audrey was hesitant, but she could sense that this woman meant no harm. She carefully placed her hands in hers and the woman grasped them firmly. The woman's eyes fell closed and her eyebrows creased in concentration. After a short time, she opened up her eyes.
"One of our kind has passed through. She was killed with your dagger and now her powers are yours," she explained.
"I don't want them." Audrey's bottom lip quivered. "I just want my friend back."
"Giuliana helped you a great deal, Audrey, but there is nothing I can do for her now." The woman said. "It is out of my hands."
Audrey fell to her knees and tried to beg the friendly stranger for another chance to try and save her friend, but all that came out were cries and whimpers. The woman lightly hushed her and combed through her hair. Her thumbs wiped her tears and she tilted her chin to look up at her.
"You will get justice for her and those who hurt you, but you need my gift first." After a few sniffles, Audrey grew quiet and the woman tucked some unruly locks behind her ear. "Will you take it now?"
Locking eyes with the woman, all doubts in Audrey's mind vanished away. She nodded and the woman grasped both sides of her head. Cami watched on as the woman chanted under her breath and pressed her thumb to the center of Audrey's forehead. A white light grew between the two women and when the woman removed her thumb, a bloody fingerprint was absorbed into her skin. Audrey then began to chant with her, her body being taken over by an unknown force. The light grew so bright that Cami had to shield her eyes from it. She called for Audrey, worried that this stranger had tricked them and she grew frantic when she received no reply.
Suddenly, the light grew dim and Cami had to wait before exposing her eyes. Once they adjusted to the light, the woman had disappeared and Audrey remained balanced on her knees. The courtyard was unbearably quiet, the silence closing in on Cami. Against her judgement, she took a few cautious steps forward and gently touched Audrey's shoulder.
"Audrey...are you alright?" Cami asked and the witch peered up at her, making her draw back. Her eyes had become black; dark reflective pools that could make anyone shiver just by looking at them. The bloodied fingerprint stained the skin on her forehead and the witch smiled up at Cami.
"I'm fine."
Klaus etched another mark on one of the tombstones he passed with a stone he'd found as he and his brother walked in circles around the Lafayette Cemetery. It felt as if they'd been pacing for hours. The witches had created some sort of an illusion to throw off the Mikaelsons from their location and as much as Klaus didn't want to admit it, it was working. The normally vast grounds of the cemetery had been spelled to look like they stretched on for miles and miles. The brothers swore they'd leave no tomb unturned and no inch of the grounds untouched until they found the witches that killed their friends and took the baby. Klaus followed his brother and used the stone to carve an 'X' on another tombstone, hoping to eliminate themselves from going in circles, but it felt like they had been.
"It's ingenious. I can see them. I can feel them, and yet, they are not real." Klaus sighed tiredly.
"There has to be a way." Elijah's eyes darted along the grounds and he passed a hand through his hair. "Even if we could just push through-"
"What we need to do is focus." His brother stressed.
Elijah stopped his searching to whip around to face his brother. "My only focus right now is that child and her safety, do you understand me?" He glared at his brother and gestured to the cemetery and all its possessions. "This. All of this. This is the world that you created, Niklaus."
"Brother—"
But Elijah wouldn't let his brother get a word in edgewise. He was too distraught to stop his train of words. "All of your scheming, the enemies that you have made every single day of your miserable life. What results did you expect? That your child would be born into a happy life?" That we could live and thrive as some sort of family?"
"That was your fantasy, brother, not mine!" Klaus growled.
"No, brother!" Elijah was enraged now, his tensions finally coming to a head. "This was our hope. This was our family's hope. Now that mother will never know her child and a woman, a friend, who swore to protect that child will never see another sunrise on this earth."
Klaus' eyes quickly found the ground beneath his feet. His brother was unraveling before him and it was too hard to watch. Elijah looked around him, suddenly feeling the weight of his words crushing him. Like a hand was at his throat, the fingers squeezing and choking him until he was robbed of the air from his lungs. He swallowed thickly, desperate to push down the lump in his throat, but it remained and only grew bigger.
"Do you understand? I let this person in. I let her in." When Klaus met his brother's gaze, it was filled with tears just waiting to escape. Elijah couldn't even say her name, let alone think it. He knew that if he did, he'd lose all composure. As much as he tried to hold them back, he cried freely, letting himself cave under the weight of his overwhelming sadness. "I don't let people in. You knew this. I needed her and now she's gone."
Elijah sat himself down on the stoop of one of the tombs and his shoulders sagged as he wept. Of all of the people to be taken from this world, it had to be her. If he could trade places, he would have gladly taken a knife to his chest so that she could bask in the joys of the world. He hated Klaus for causing these events to occur because of his hunger for power, yet he also blamed himself for not keeping to his promise to her and allowing himself to let her slip through his fingers. He rested his head in his hands and Klaus came to sit beside him. He was never good in these kinds of situations, but he needed his brother to pull himself together for the sake of the baby. He'd give him his time to properly mourn, but the sacrifice was looming and they still hadn't found the witches. Klaus grasped his brother's shoulder, forcing him to look up and he leaned in.
"You can tell your niece how much you cared for her godmother when we save her." He told his brother who was still crying. Klaus nodded encouragingly and squeezed Elijah's shoulder, hoping that his words would bring about some inspiration to continue their search.
Darkness.
It was everywhere.
Suffocating. Overwhelming. Paralyzing.
It touched every corner and doused every bit of light like a candle that had been put out. It was hard to adjust to at first. For a while, it seemed impossible to navigate, but it slowly became a second nature. With the darkness came silence and that was thought to be worse, but that silence was quickly broken up by crackles of sounds that penetrated waking eardrums. In the beginning, it was muffled and hard to put together, like the mismatched pieces of a puzzle. Along with the new sounds, a dim light began to creep in as if someone had turned on a small light in a dark room. All at once, the darkness didn't seem so frightening anymore, but something else had begun to stir, a feeling that was never present.
Hunger.
It was a longing ache, a scratch at the back of the throat, a need to quench the thirst. Wild, bloodshot eyes were skittering about, searching for some kind of nourishment. Everything was blurry, the fine lines of solid edges had become watery which made it harder to focus. The scent of death and dried blood wafted in the air, but that wasn't what was needed. Limbs gave a painful shout, urging its host to search for fresh blood. Shaking hands pressed to the cold floor and in a gust of wind they vanished.
Klaus growled as he hurled his fist through the side of the tomb. He and Elijah had tried to break the coven's illusion by smashing the tombs open to see if the witches were working from inside them. Once the dust in the air cleared, the brother's kicked aside the rocky debris and entered the tomb that was lit by candles placed around inside it. They were growing more and more anxious by the minute with each dead end they came across.
"We've passed through here twice already." Elijah growled in frustration before blasting the wall of the tomb with his fist. "We're running out of time."
"Then we move faster." Klaus was determined to push onward, but the fact that they had gone nowhere was not reassuring. He marked the cracked wall with a third tally mark and angrily tossed the marker aside.
"Or smarter."
Elijah and Klaus froze hearing a very familiar voice, but they had made themselves believe that this person was long gone since they left St. Ann's chapel. Slowly turning to face that voice, they were bewildered to learn that they had been wrong all along.
Hayley Marshall stood weakly in the doorway of the tomb. The wound on her neck had healed over and she looked no worse for the wear minus the dazed expression she was sporting. Klaus' mouth hung agape while Elijah had done a double take. If Hayley was alive, then that could only mean...
"How are you here?" Klaus asked her, curiosity nagging at him.
"I woke up in the church. I felt this hunger. I knew what I needed." She replied numbly. Klaus' suspicions had been confirmed and while he did not wish this on Hayley, he was much happier to see her alive than as a lifeless corpse.
Elijah carefully took some steps towards her as if not to alarm her. "Hayley...was Giuliana really—"
"Killed? Yes." She was quick to stop him from continuing. When she awoke, she knew that she was not the only person in the church. Giuliana's body was resting not far off from hers and she had a white sheet over her. Her worst fears were confirmed when Hayley plucked the sheet and dragged it down to reveal that her dear friend was indeed dead and had been for quite some time. She grasped the knife to remove it, but it did not budge. It remained tightly secured, as if it had become cemented inside her chest cavity. Hayley cursed the coven aloud, swearing on the statues of angels that her friend's death would not be in vain and she promised to get revenge.
"She died protecting me; protecting my baby," Hayley continued, her voice wavering with emotion. When she first found Giuliana's body, she was numb with denial, unable to accept that her friend was dead, but with each looming moment that passed, the cruel reality was setting in.
"Those witches will pay." Elijah assured her through clenched teeth.
Hayley's dark orbs took in her surroundings before meeting gazes with the brothers. "I can feel her. She's here. I can feel my baby."
"You died with the baby's blood still in your system." Klaus said and turned to his brother. "She's in transition."
"Which means she has to drink the blood of the child if she is to survive." Elijah added and Klaus nodded.
"To be reborn a hybrid."
"I don't care about me." Hayley shook her head. "I'm gonna go find our daughter." With that, she turned on her heel and sauntered out of the tomb with Klaus and Elijah following close behind her. The trio was more determined than ever to finish this battle with Genevieve and her coven. They'd fight with everything they had and they'd die trying if need be.
"Nouvelle vie, nouvelle âme, mélange avec nous."
"Nouvelle vie, nouvelle âme, mélange avec nous."
"Nouvelle vie, nouvelle âme, mélange avec nous."
Hayley and the Mikaelsons followed the sounds of the witches chanting, smashing tombs and headstones along the way. They could feel the magic getting closer with each step; it wouldn't be long till Hayley could be reunited with her baby. When the turned a corner, Hayley's blood ran cold as she saw the three witches, all dressed in white and standing at an altar. Genevieve was holding a sharp knife above the screaming baby's head and was prepared to bring it down.
"No!" Hayley's shout partially startled Genevieve, giving Elijah enough time to pick up an urn and lob it at her. The urn slammed against Genevieve's hand, making her drop the knife onto the ground. The trio charged for the witches, but Monique and Abigail stopped them by simply grasping each other's hand and holding the other in the air.
"You fools!" Monique bellowed loudly, mocking the powerless Mikaelsons. "To come against us in our place of power, in our strongest hour! You don't face three; you face us all!"
Monique was right. All around them, the ghastly spirits of witches long passed had come to protect their own, so the sacrifice could be complete. All three witches would benefit from drawing upon the immense powers of their ancestors and would take strength from them as well. Klaus and Elijah knew quite a few of the faces, having practically buried some of them, but they were not surprised by Monique and Abigail's little spell. They pushed against the magic and ran in opposite directions in hopes of overpowering the witches. Hayley clashed with Genevieve who had just found the knife she'd been searching for. The wolf knocked it out of her hands again and the two went at it, grappling with one another.
Klaus rushed to rip Abigail's head from her shoulders, but was cornered by Papa Tunde's twin sons. The men used their telekinetic powers to throw him back into a tomb. The stone cracked under his weight and the entire tomb buckled from the force of the hybrid colliding with it. Genevieve and Hayley had been fist fighting until the latter was able to knock the witch down. She darted for her baby, but Genevieve quickly spelled pain infliction on her, making her fall to her knees and clutch her head. Monique and Abigail still chanted, unaffected by the chaos around them. Elijah growled low that his strength paled in comparison to the two witches, but he continued to challenge their magic.
"La mère, le père, le frère, la sœur... La mère, le père, le frère, la sœur..." The girls spoke in time, but a red aura began to glow between their joined hands. Confusion formed on their faces as they knew this was not their doing. The aura became dark red and the grounds of the cemetery trembled. Tombstones were then ripped from the earth and rose up into the air, all of them surrounded by that same red glow.
Feeling a presence behind him, Klaus whipped around to see Audrey standing there with her arms outstretched. Audrey's blue eyes were surrounded by a glowing red hue along with the tips of her fingers. He moved to approach her, but an unknown force held him back as if to warn him to stay away. In a trance like state, Audrey clenched her hands and the floating stones shattered into large chunks. Then, with a flick of her wrist, she hurled the pieces at the two living witches and their ancestors. Rock collided with bodies, sending them in all sorts of directions all over the cemetery. Both Monique and Abigail were hit as well, separating their hands and breaking their connection to their ancestors. The red glow in Audrey's eyes disappeared, revealing her icy blue orbs and she turned to Klaus.
"You didn't think I'd miss this party, did you?" She smirked wryly and Klaus returned it. He was unsure of how her powers had evolved or how she knew where they were, but he was so grateful to have her by his side and fighting with him.
Abigail staggered to her feet and raised her hands to use magic again, but a Devil's Star was embedded in her stomach. Mouth agape, blood tricked down her lips and her entire body was covered with small cuts. The witch coughed up more blood before falling to the ground dead. Everyone looked around to see that Marcel had thrown the star and had also come to join the fight to save the baby.
Outraged by the failure of her coven, Monique took up the dagger in her clenched fist and raised it above the baby's head in an effort to finish this once and for all. She stopped the group from rushing forward by casting a ring of fire surrounding her and the baby. Hayley managed to overpower Genevieve for a few moments, but not even she could cross the flames that separated her from her baby. The embers rose higher and just as Monique was bringing the knife down, she let out a horrifying scream. The knife clanged to the floor and Monique struggled against a pair of sharp teeth in the side of her neck. In seconds, the fire extinguished on itself and Monique's dead body was tossed aside. The brothers, Hayley, and Audrey were in shock at who had come to their rescue.
Giuliana's olive skin was stained with blood, fresh droplets dribbling from the sides of her mouth and glinting off her new fangs. A large hole in her shirt left a reminder as to where she'd been stabbed and old blood crusted her shirt. She licked her ruby lips, relishing at the witch's taste and the flavor of revenge that burst all over her tongue. She'd awoken in the church alone, completely disoriented and confused as to how she got there. The memories hit her like a battering ram: the baby's birth, Hayley's death, her own death. She also sensed this new hunger deep from inside her and all she knew was that she needed to avenge her friends and quench her thirst.
Her green eyes peered down at Monique's body. "Just returning the favor, bitch."
Elijah was dumbfounded; he was never dumbfounded. He stood with his mouth open, his body frozen, and all logic and reason were suspended as to how she was standing before him. Any blood that she'd ingested must have passed through her system by now, but here she was, a newly turned vampire. A curious thought crossed his mind as he recalled the spell he'd done with Audrey earlier; Giuliana used his blood to call on for power. Could his blood have stayed in her bloodstream even after the spell's link was severed? There was no other possible explanation.
The cry of the baby brought everyone back to the reality that it was all over. Klaus knew that he would still have to protect his daughter from more enemies, but he would do it in a heartbeat. He looked around at all of the faces that joined him to take down the coven, each one ingrained in his mind. He was overcome with gratitude, an emotion that seldom graced him, but when it did, he knew it.
In a sudden flash of movement, Marcel dashed forward, took up the baby and disappeared from the cemetery. Klaus was quick to follow him, if he had to kill Marcel as well he'd do it. Giuliana moved to join her friends, but the harsh burn of the sunlight made her wince and hiss through her teeth. She hadn't realized it, but for the entire battle, she'd hid herself in a pocket of shadows, waiting to attack. She mentally kicked herself for not remembering that sunlight hurt vampires, especially ones without daylight rings, but she was now faced with the grim reality that she'd have a lot to learn in her new life.
Elijah sped to her, gently pushing her back into the shadows, watching as her burned skin slowly healed itself. He could see the pain in her eyes, the fear that she woken up as a creature that was the enemy of her family for as long as she could remember. He shrugged off his bloodied jacket and placed it upon her shoulders. It wouldn't do much, but it would be enough to get her out of the cemetery and back to the compound.
"Hayley," Elijah turned to face her. "Please see that she gets home safely."
The newly turned hybrid whisked Giuliana away and the Original's attention was now focused on Genevieve who was trying to crawl away. Audrey clenched her teeth and joined Elijah's side. Her eyes glowed red and so did Genevieve's body, enabling her from moving any further. The Original hoisted her up by the crook of her elbow and she was too weak to fight back.
"What do you suppose we do with her?" He asked.
The dagger then floated gracefully into Audrey's hand and she nodded her head towards one of the tombs that had been spared in the battle.
"I think I have a pretty good idea of what to do." The glow around her eyes grew darker and they both dragged a screaming Genevieve to the tomb. They were far from finished with her.
In the days that followed, decisions were made and plans were carried out to keep Baby Mikaelson safe. Hayley thought it best to send her baby away to live out a normal life, at least until all threats against her were gone and everyone else would stay behind and clean up the mess they made in the city. At first, there were opposing parties, Elijah made the clear point of danger always being a risk, but Klaus had come up with an idea to make everyone in New Orleans believe that the baby had died. A candlelight vigil had been held in the French Quarter and a plaque had been put up in memoriam of Baby Mikaelson. Hayley had come to pay her respects, of course, but even though her baby would be given away, but it was the same kind of grief as if she'd really lost her child. Giuliana held her sobbing friend in her arms and she wept too. For all of Hayley's pregnancy, she was looking forward to meeting the baby and now that she was there, she had to be taken away and hidden for her safety. She also cried for herself, knowing that she would now have to adjust to a brand new life; a life she was thrown into without so much as having a choice if she wanted it or not.
Audrey and Elijah had questioned Genevieve after they hauled her inside one of the tombs. They were able to get valuable information out of her that helped them understand why she and her coven had gone after the baby. Esther Mikaelson had decreed that the baby's remains will be consecrated among her ancestors. She had control over the witches and refused to be bound by something as final as death. As long as the baby lived, the witches would continue to pursue her. Naturally, this also fueled Hayley's decision to send the baby away for her own good. Genevieve begged for forgiveness, but Elijah and Audrey would not give her the satisfaction. In a rage, Audrey tossed the mythical dagger aside and gripped the sides of Genevieve's head. She berated her and swore that even in death, she would never be granted peace. Her eyes glowed red and Genevieve's followed suit before she began screaming and writhing in pain. Elijah chained her to the tomb and watched in complete horror as Genevieve's body burned alive from the inside out. She eventually melted into a puddle of scalding hot blood, the liquid pooling and bubbling over as it spread. Audrey peered down at the witch's remains and felt a calmness wash over her, finally ridding herself of a friend who'd betrayed her. She then brought it to Elijah's attention that she'd been visited by a ghost at the compound who had given her more power than she'd ever imagined possible. Her crystalline eyes held nothing but sincerity when she told him that she would protect the baby at costs and remain loyal to the Originals.
Klaus had given Baby Hope to Rebekah, the only person in the entire world who he trusted to take care of his little girl. He'd decided to name her Hope after hearing something Elijah had said just before the battle with the witches. He had told him that this baby was the family's hope and nothing could be truer. He was just sorry that he couldn't be there to watch her grow. He would slaughter anyone who came in his way, but he was fearful that his mother would be a lot keener in her multiple attempts to make her decree come true. He agreed with Hayley's wishes and handed over Hope to Rebekah. His sister took up Hope, the grandest of smiles gracing her lips and she gently rocked her in her arms. She had always longed for a child of her own and she would do her best to provide everything her niece could ever want. As Rebekah drove away, it took everything in Klaus' being not to run after her, but he realized that he had to let her go in order to keep her safe.
However, a new threat was looming within the shadows of New Orleans. It had yet to make its presence known, but it would come back with a vengeance after the first failed attempt. This time, though, they were certain that they would be victorious. They would bide their time, blending in amongst the darkness and only when the opportune moment arose would they strike. As two forms walked through the gates of the Lafayette Cemetery, the Originals were unaware how close this new threat was to home. It would be so close that they wouldn't realize it until it hit them between the eyes.
Something wicked was coming.
So, Giuliana is a vampire, Audrey has inherited powers from Zafrina (one of the Blood Witches mentioned earlier in the story), Hope has been taken away to live with Rebekah, and Esther and Finn have come back from the dead!
