Chapter Eleven: How it all began

Now listen to this and do not so easily dismiss what your ears are about to hear,

the dawn of my race is misted in the fog of time:

each hero and heroine marred by mystery,

We are the children of myths and legends.

It is said that Dana rose up from the great ocean

to find a world devoted to other gods and goddess,

but there were none to worship her.

She traveled each land and race,

She touched each piece of earth and felt its powers;

yet still there were none who praised her name.

She was a goddess of great esteem and lonely,

For her gifts were ignored or simply taken for granted;

And all she loved did not return her affection.

It is said that one day when sorrow was at its zenith,

And the sky was ominous with thunder

That Dana came back to the ocean of her birth.

Here it was that giving up all hope Dana took a knife

And cut into her arms till her blood spilled over;

"I will give back to the earth, the only one

Who has shown me any love for my gifts" said she

As her blood spilled over, the earth gave back to Dana

Her heart's desire;

For an Island was created from her blood,

And from its earth and her blood was fashioned

The original Tuatha De Danann,

Children of Dana,

And finally the goddess was not alone.

It is said that at last a race was created

For Dana,

Who would worship her and only her.

Yet, disaster was still to come.

The other gods and goddess were jealous,

"Why does she get an entire race

When we have to share among the races of men?"

So it was that they plotted against Dana and her people,

They sent warriors to the coasts of

her Isle to trouble her worshipers.

The Tuatha De Danann fought long wars to keep their land,

But the might of other nations were too many,

They were conquered,

But Dana did not abandon her people.

She built for them an Other-world in the belly of

her Island and this became their home.

The invaders had only won at face value and once

More the Tuatha De Danann were

Free to worship Dana.

Yet, now there arose rebellion from within,

A split among the Tuatha De Danann;

There were some, who wished to travel with the enemy,

Some who wished to mate with the victors of the land above,

Others who wished to claim back the Isle for Dana.

The split caused division among ourselves,

We sought more riches and more material

than what we were blessed with by Dana,

and were not content in her love.

We became greedy,

And intermingled with the people of other gods,

We joined their revels;

and forgot our goddess for a time.

Then came our great war,

The purist who had gained control our Other-world

and parts of the land above

Chose to war against the rebels, the half-breeds,

who had forgotten Dana,

who had forgotten they were Tuatha De Danann.

The pretense of war was over cattle,

But soon enough the enemy gods of Dana

saw their chance to cause destruction and pain,

they joined one side or the other;

each camp losing their cause within the blood of the moment.

Dana would not join the purist or the mixed of her children,

For though it brought her sadness,

to see how easily she was forgotten,

yet she could not condone punishment.

It was because of this war,

"The great Tain" as it was called;

That mating developed or so it is said.

Because of the intermingling of the two bloodlines,

And of the other races as time went on,

There were born those not gifted by

Dana.

This created an inner circle among our fathers,

When added with the kiss of the shaman

As once it was called,

Was the birth of true mating.

It could only be performed between those

Gifted by the goddess,

And it was a sign of status

A sign of favor,

Or so it is said.

"The great Tain" ended the purist

And all their dogma,

It began a time of living above ground

where new traditions and legends

were born.

Many such things I could tell you of my people,

That is also your people,

But for brevity I will tell you how

We came to this land of the Americas.

Generations upon generations passed in Ireland,

The modern name of the Isle created by Dana,

And we worshiped peacefully,

There was no need to hide.

We were free to exist,

For we were all the mingled seed

of the goddess.

Then the famine of the potatoes,

And those less gifted by Dana

Blamed those of us with more gifts,

"Surely they have cursed us"

They said.

In her wisdom, my ancestor, Aednat

Encouraged a remnant of us,

Those more gifted by the goddess

And their families,

to move to the Americas.

"let us not trouble our brethren,

let us rebuild a world for ourselves,

and let it be a hidden realm,

as Dana did for us, so long ago"

Under the persecution of our brethren,

Could we expect any better from strangers?

So, our people followed Aednat's advice.

The move to a whole new continent was overwhelming,

and yet we survived and thrived,

We learned a new language,

New traditions mixed with old,

and we remained Tuatha De Danann.

Our goddess seemed pleased,

She blessed us in our new land

And gave our new home her light,

Her gifts,

and her grace.

Our children grew strong with her gifts,

Each generation never lacking

And each shaman as strong as the last,

It seemed as though our goddess walked

Among the Tuatha De Danann even in a land

Not of her making.

The years passed and our secrecy waxed cold,

Our children left our realm,

And again mixed with the strangers around us,

"lost ones" we called them

And shook our heads at the youth of the Tuatha De Danann.

Till one day, not so long ago,

Even only months ago,

A council of the Tuatha De Danann decided it was time,

Time to redeem our heritage,

Time to reclaim the lost ones,

And leave the shroud of secrecy behind us.

So it was that the faithful youth of our people

Came to this school named, "Sky-High",

And among its students sought

"the lost ones",

those blessed by our goddess and ignorant of it.

Here in this tale of redemption,

A daughter of the Tuatha De Danann was mated to

"a lost one",

And the chance to change the future was given them,

"Save the Tuatha De Danann"

Said Dana to her daughter,

"You will need the lost one"

Thus, my mate, hear and listen;

Help save our people

And bring peace to our goddess' heart.

Author's Note: I will be delivering my second child at the end of January or the beginning of February, so please bear with me. February's chapter might be longer in coming or you guys might end up with two chapters in March. It depends on my recovery from birth and how well I cope with having a newborn and a toddler. Thank you for your continued patience!
