Okay, I lied. I'm writing another one. But I did finish the next chapter of Whispers in the Dark and you can now read it since it's updated! Lots of plot happens (as well as two stubborn nerds being little shits) so if you're enjoying it, I would suggest reading the long chapter.
From celebi4ever: "Hirsch mentioned in an interview that Stan's behavior in "Headhunters" towards his wax statue was due to feeling as though his brother was back. I'd love to see a oneshot based on that."
Ooh, I saw that interview. This was actually my favorite episode of the first season, so I'm super pumped for this one. Let's do this!
What a Resemblance
Stan was admittedly taken aback by his great-niece's creation. It looked just like him, or more specifically, like his brother. Mabel definitely a talent. The moment he had walked into the room, the only thing registering in his head had been It's Stanley. He's back.
The next thought had been OH MY GOD HE'S BACK AND HE'S AGED?! and he'd found himself scrambling away from the wax figure.
When Mabel looked at him expectantly, he couldn't find it in him to say no to allowing her to bring that replica of him to the wax museum reopening. No matter how disturbing it was that it looked like his twin (well, his twin thirty years older), there was no way that he could tell the wide-eyed girl that.
And if he wanted to watch Ducktective with the wax man, why not? Nobody was going to stop him. Besides, maybe he just wanted something to talk to, you know? The kids were upstairs about to go to bed and watching the show alone suddenly seemed... boring.
But then he'd returned to find that the head was chopped clean off of the wax figure and the only thing going through his head was, No. It's Stanley. No, he's gone.
Memories flashed through his head as he gave a loud yell and the twins came running. Memories of last words and portals and one final sad look before he was gone -
But he didn't dare mention this to the twins as he managed to snap out of it. All he did was call the police with shaking hands and stare blankly at where Mabel knelt in horror beside the statue.
The police could do nothing. He ought to have expected it, truthfully. They were all idiots anyway. The only thing that they did was show up and taunt Dipper for trying to offer his help with the case (which he, admittedly, was touched by). It was the twins who jumped at the opportunity to avenge the wax man's murderer and he definitely didn't smile softly at their familiar enthusiasm.
He definitely wasn't reminded of a certain pair who were just like them - although they definitely didn't get along as well.
Stan began arranging the funeral for Wax Stan as the kids launched themselves into the case, going out and investigating this mysterious crime. He ignored the odd looks in town when he bought the coffin. They really ought to be used to the strangeness going on in this town by now.
He definitely wasn't doing this funeral to keep the memory of his twin alive. It definitely was not so that Stanley got the funeral he deserved, the proper funeral he needed after the awful one his wife had thrown.
And if he ran out of the room during the eulogy because he was (absolutely not) crying over past memories, past regrets, and the searing pain of the guilt eating away him... that was none of their business.
Stan sighed and looked up into the bathroom mirror, eyes red and puffy. All he could see was the lifeless wax face of his twin brother.
This caused him to set his jaw determinedly. He needed to work harder on finding those journals and fixing up the portal. He had to get his brother back - his real brother.
Not quite sure if I like the way this one-shot turned out... Oh, well. I hope you liked it!
