Emma Nolan was sick of today. It had been a great day, just working at the service desk, making only the polite small talk and cleaning the register. She had a laugh with her work mates until she had to go out onto the main register. She didn't hate going out there but she didn't love it. There was three ways of busy on the main register. Extremely busy like the store was going to lose all of its food, slower than a snail busy where all you had to do was clean the scales and the conveyer belt or just average where it was the awkward stage.
Emma was serving the grumpiest of ladies today. Firstly, SHE had dropped the milk on the conveyer belt and the lid had popped off. Emma quickly placed a piece of paper in front of the mechanism that made the conveyer belt move, but she hadn't been fast enough. Some of the milk had gone underneath the conveyer belt and the lady seemed pretty good about it.
But god, she wasn't. She went to get a new milk and Emma called her best friend, Graham to clean it up for her while she transferred what little groceries she had to another register.
'Sorry, she didn't stop it fast enough,' the lady said, sarcastically.
Emma could have said many things to that lady. "Maybe don't drop the milk, you idiot," was what Emma really wanted to say to the old cow but she kept her mouth shut. She really didn't want to get in trouble. Secondly, the lady went to grab some potting mix, while Emma waited impatiently for her to buy her shit. Emma had scanned the mix and she started to get angry.
'It says three dollars fifty on the sign,' she said, pointing to the sign. Could the lady not read? It was for the white bagged potting mix, not the blue one.
'I'm sorry about that,' Emma said, gritting her teeth, 'but that's for the white bagged potting mix, not the blue one. This one is seven dollars.'
'Whatever,' the lady muttered darkly, 'I'll take it. But I want to talk to whoever is in charge.'
At that moment, Emma's duty manger came to check on her coins to fill up. Elsa was a very understanding women, and when Emma was in grade three, Elsa use to teach Emma dancing, when Elsa was sixteen.
'Excuse me,' the lady said. Elsa looked at the lady.
'How can I help you?' Elsa asked nicely.
'You have placed that sign there,' the lady said, pointing to the sign, 'wrongly. It makes people believe that the good brand is cheap and not expensive.'
'Sorry about that,' Elsa smiled, 'I'll go fix that. Thanks for being understanding.'
The lady just smiled and Emma told the lady the total for her groceries.
'That's fifty two, thirty five,' Emma smiled forcefully, 'would you like cash out?'
'Two hundred please,' the lady said.
Emma quickly pressed the button to pay but the computer was being slow, so she kept pressing it, meaning she had pressed cash for two hundred.
'Shit,' Emma muttered. She went to the phone and called for Elsa again.
'Sorry,' Emma said, 'I just pressed the wrong button.'
The lady rolled her eyes and Elsa came over. Emma told Elsa what happened and Elsa smiled and fixed Emma's mistake. Emma waited for the lady to do whatever she needed to do for her card and gave her the money.
'Enjoy your day!' Emma smiled and the lady rolled her eyes and stalked off with her groceries.
'That wasn't your fault,' Emma smiled at the familiar voice. Killian Jones, her boyfriend.
'It's been a shitty day,' Emma muttered, scanning his things.
'It's okay Em,' Killian smiled, 'you're finished now,'
'Oh thank the lord,' Emma said, calling up Anna, Elsa's little sister and Emma's fellow work mate to the main register so Emma could go home.
'I hope mum made good food for us,' Emma rolled her eyes as her brother, Neal came up beside Killian. He was twelve and Emma was eighteen. Emma was surprised that her sister, Eva and Neal's twin wasn't there with them.
'Neal it's movie night,' Emma said, tiredly. Anna took over as Killian was about to pay.
'Thanks so much Anna.' Emma smiled.
'That's okay, I'll see you tomorrow.' Anna smiled cheerily. 'What time do you start tomorrow?'
'Seven fifteen in the morning,' Emma groaned, 'no sleep in on a Sunday. It sucks bull shit.'
'Don't worry too much,' Anna smiled, 'I start at eight.'
'Oh thank god,' Emma smiled, 'a good person.'
'See you later, Killian,' Anna smiled and started to serve Leroy, Emma's parent's best friend.
'Leroy you coming tonight?' Neal asked.
'No gotta work,' Leroy said, 'but next weekend, buddy!'
'See you later Leroy!' Emma smiled, helping Killian with his groceries.
'Come love,' Killian said, 'let's get you some chocolate.'
'Oh thank goodness,' Emma smiled.
Her family always knew how to make a shitty day better.
