Hi again! Another chapter up... :) I've receantly been getting a lot of extra stuff to do, so writing this chapter was kind of hard. Occasionally I was kind of distracted, so sorry if I make any mistakes! I hope you enjoy the story, and leave a review if you have a comment of any kind ;)
(Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who. Only my OC, Phoenix.)
Eventually, they arrived at the Torchwood house. Ah, Torchwood. Phoenix couldn't help but wonder if at some point she would get to visit the future version. Phoenix instantly saddened as the events of the episodes 'Army of Ghosts' and 'Doomsday flashed through her mind, one after the other.
Rose's mum standing next to the 'ghost' of her granddad, The Doctor setting the machine up and capturing one of the ghosts inside it, The Doctor landing in Torchwood and getting a round of applause, being shown through Torchwood and being shown different weapons and tools, The Doctor being shown the void ship and putting on his 3D glasses, The Doctor cracking the glass of Yvonne's office, The program going without the levers being pulled down, the cybermen appearing all over the world, Daleks coming out of the void ship, Daleks sucking the life out of the guy names Rajesh, the meeting between cybermen and Daleks, Yvonne becoming a Cyberman, The Doctor jumping to the alternate universe, Mickey touching the Ark, Jackie and Rose being taken to the alternate universe, Rose coming back, The Doctor and Rose attaching the magnaclamps to the wall, the Daleks and cybermen getting sucked into the void, Rose slipping and being caught just in time by her dad, The Doctor and Rose meeting on the beach. "Rose Tyler I…"
Phoenix snapped out of her own thoughts, a few tears leaking out of her eyes and down her face. Luckily, she was facing away from the queen, so she didn't have to answer any questions. Which, after seeing that, was exactly the opposite of what she wanted to do. Phoenix wanted to curl up into a ball and sob her eyes out.
Why, you may ask? Well, for starters, that was real. It was happening. It will happen… bloody tenses. She would have to sit to the side and watch as Rose gets sucked to an alternate universe. And that was going to keep happening, over and over and over again. Jabe, Gwyneth, Suki, Reinette, Jenny, and so many more. And none would be as heart breaking as The Doctor's deaths. Because they kept coming. More and more. So far, fourteen deaths actually. The Doctor has died fourteen times. Fourteen times! Could you imagine dying fourteen times? Excruciating pain, darkness, and suddenly being ripped from the serenity of death to be brought back to life. Phoenix summarized it must be like her first jump…
Eventually, the carriage came to a halt suddenly, jerking Phoenix forward slightly. It took all her strength not to fall directly into the queen. That would have been a major disaster. Seriously, she could have been exiled or something!
The carriage door swung open, and Phoenix stepped out of it, being sure her dress was smoothed out and actually down. No matter how innocent history was supposed to be, there are always perverts. Everywhere. God dammit Phoenix, add to your own paranoia why don't you?
The house, well, rustic was an understatement. It looked like a mansion built in the 1800's… well, it was, Phoenix supposed. This whole time period was old-fashioned compared to hers! Well, she really didn't have a time period anymore… she was a wanderer now, a lonely girl without a home. Now, more than ever actually. No family, no friends, no one she really knew. It sucked being new. It was like starting your first day at a new school halfway across the country. You don't know anyone, so the whole week is awkward as hell.
Sir Robert walked out of his house, followed by his 'Butler monks.' God, does no one get suspicious that they were all bald? Is being bald as a servant common or something? Phoenix wouldn't really know, considering she hadn't had servant before. And she kind of intended to keep it that way.
"Your majesty." Sir Robert greeted, nodding his head at her. Phoenix slowly side-stepped toward The Doctor, who luckily was only about five feet away. She kept her footing silent as she inched closer toward him. Obviously, everyone probably noticed, but she still wanted to be silent during the exchange in front of them.
"Sir Robert. My apologies for the emergency. And how is Lady Isobel?" The queen questioned, raising an eyebrow slightly. She looked very calm and collected. She didn't have anything really to worry about though, unlike Phoenix. She had plenty to worry about. A lot more than a normal 25-year-old should carry on her shoulders. Probably more than any person should ever carry. And the Doctor had more worries than her. That can't be good for his health.
Big plan one; get the Doctor to release some of his worries and problems through simple things, like talking.
"She's… indisposed, I'm afraid. She's gone to Edinburgh for the season. And she's taken the cook with her. The kitchens are… barely stocked. I wouldn't blame your majesty if you wanted to ride on." Sir Robert said nervously. Phoenix resisted the urge to laugh slightly. She credited him for the nice play of words with indisposed, and the courage to say that one sentence. God, he was getting a lot of death glares later from those butlers.
"Oh no not at all. I've had quite enough carriage exercise, and this is…. Charming, if rustic. It's my first visit to this house. My late husband spoke of it often. The Torchwood estate. Now, shall we go inside? And, please excuse the naked girl." The queen said in what seemed like one breath. Carriage exercise though? Carriage exercise! That's not…! Phoenix sighs, giving up on her thoughts. It's not like they could hear her anyways.
"Sorry." Rose chimed in, flushing in embarrassment. She's lucky she at least had some clothing on. Imagine if she didn't… shudders fly through Phoenix's body. Let's not think about that…
"She's a feral child. I bought her for sixpence in old London town. It was her or the elephant man, so…" The Doctor rambled. Phoenix held back her giggles, and joined in. "I'm still convinced we should have gotten both." She said, grinning slightly.
The Doctor smiled at her, glad she joined in on it with him. Like always, Phoenix couldn't pass up the chance to crack a joke.
"They think they're funny, but I'm so not amused. What do you think ma'am?" Rose asked. Phoenix felt like slapping herself for a moment there. Idiot! She was so focused on the things around her, she forgot to prevent the exile! Oh god, this just got one hundred percent more difficult than it was before.
Well, not saying it wasn't difficult before… just that you know, it would probably end way worse than intended. Knowing herself, Phoenix was pretty sure they would end up executed if she really tried to help. Things always seemed to end up that way for her. Unlucky.
"It hardly matters." The queen replied. Phoenix smiled slightly. "Shall we proceed? Come along then." The queen finished, gesturing toward Phoenix to follow her, and then walking away. Phoenix gasped for a second, then slowly walked after the queen, glancing back at the Doctor before going inside the old, rustic house.
"This, I take it, is the famous endeavor." The queen said as they walked in the 'werewolf trap' room. It was a standard room for the house, bricks walls and wooden floors, but there was old trinkets and gizmos scattered about the room. And in the middle, was the famous light chamber. Or telescope if you preferred.
"All my father's work. Built by hand in his final years. Became something of an obsession. He spent his money on this rather than caring for the house or himself." Sir Robert replied, staring at the telescope rather sadly. Phoenix thought the obsession part sounded familiar… oh that's right. It was her with Doctor Who.
The Doctor studied the telescope from afar, smiling slightly cockily as he did. He rather liked the light chamber, even if he thought it was a telescope.
"I wish I'd met him. I like him." The Doctor said. Phoenix smiled, and had to agree with him. "That thing's beautiful… can I, um…" The Doctor asked, uncertain and slowly stepping toward the light chamber.
"Help yourself." Sir Robert said, gesturing toward the light chamber. It was rather obvious he was, in a way, proud of it.
"What did he model it on?" The Doctor asked, touching the exterior of the light chamber.
"I know nothing about it. To be honest, most of us though him a little… shall we say, eccentric. I wish now I'd spent more time with him, and listened to his stories." Robert replied, frowning sadly. Full of stories today, isn't everyone?
"I was like that with my own father. He was always coming up with the craziest ideas. I had always spent more time with my mother than him. I, too, wish I spent more time with him." Phoenix said, a stray tear slipping down her face. The Doctor sent a look of concern in her direction, but nothing more.
"It's a bit rubbish. How many prisms has it got? Way too many. The magnification's gone right over the top! That's a stupid kind of…" The Doctor said, but then realization crosses his face for a split second and he leaned over to Rose, and whispered, "Am I being rude again?"
"Yep." Rose replied with humor apparent in her voice. This Doctor was always rude Rose, get used to it. Well, actually, all of them were rude. That was the one trait he's kept through all of his regenerations. It was kind of funny how hard that trait stuck.
"But it's pretty! It's very… pretty." The Doctor said with slightly boredom in his voice. The Doctor loved examining and explaining, it was another one of his quirks throughout all regenerations.
"And the imagination of it should be applauded." Phoenix said, walking up toward the light chamber. "Reminds me of something my father made."
"I thought you might disapprove your majesty. Stargazing… isn't that a bit fanciful? Could you easily not be amused or something? No?" Rose questioned, really trying to win the bet. Phoenix was mentally slapping herself at the moment. Why didn't she stop The Doctor and Rose from making that bet?
"This device surveys the infinite works of god. What could be finer?" The queen asked. Phoenix was trying real hard not to burst out laughing and list about a million things better. But hey, opinions are opinions. And this was the queen, for god's sake! Phoenix wasn't about to argue with anything she said.
""Vaisseaux spatiaux, transporte, cela Tardis, méchant loup, et la liste est loin de ..." Phoenix mumbled to The Doctor, smirking cockily. The Doctor grinned slightly back at her. (Spaceships, Transports, Tardis, Bad Wolf, the list goes on and on…)
"Sir Robert's and Phoenix's fathers were an example to us all, a polymath, steeped in astronomy and the sciences, yet equally well-versed in folklore and fairy tales." The queen said, looking at Sir Robert and then Phoenix. She was sort of shocked the queen had mentioned her father at all. She hadn't exactly explained much about her father, yet the queen had still mentioned him.
"Stars and magic, I like him more and more…" The Doctor said, smirking. Phoenix rolled her eyes.
"Oh… my late husband enjoyed his company. Prince Albert himself was acquainted with many rural superstitions, coming, as he did, from Saxe-Coburg." The queen said proudly. Sort of. Her tone was always neutral, so it was hard to tell her emotions! She had a strong mask on her, this one.
"That's Bavaria." The Doctor whispered into Rose and Phoenix's ears. Even though the second one already knew of course.
"When Albert was told about your local wolf, he was transported." The queen said, smiling sadly at the memories.
"So, what's this wolf then?" The Doctor asked, tilting his head slightly to the side, cockily.
"It's just a story." Sir Robert said, waving it off as nothing. He really didn't want to talk about it, did he?
"Then tell it." The Doctor and Phoenix said at the same time, raising our eyebrows.
"It's said that…" Sir Robert started, but then the evil 'butler' interrupted.
"Excuse me sir. Perhaps her majesty's party could repair to their rooms. It's almost dark." Oh, Phoenix hated that butler. It took all her self-control to not strangle him!
"Of course. Yes, of course." Sir Robert replied, that nervous tone settling back into his voice. God, he was an idiot for following this plan along…
"And then supper. And… could we find some clothes for Miss Tyler? I'm tired of nakedness." The Queen said, with a hint of joy in her voice.
"It's not amusing, is it?" Rose said humorously. Rose, shut the fuck up.
The queen turned toward Sir Robert. "Sir Robert, your wife must have left some clothes. See to it. We shall dine at seven. And talk some more of this wolf. After all, there is a fully moon tonight." The queen said, a glint of mischief in her eye. She turned around and started walking out of the room, pulling Rose with her.
"So there is, Ma'am." Sir Robert said nervously, and he followed after the queen.
After they all left, The Doctor turned to Phoenix, "What is it actually?" He asked, raising one eyebrow.
Phoenix sighed. If she really did travel with him for a long time, he should really know the answer to his question without her having to say it. "Spoilers."
"Always with spoilers…" The Doctor said, sighing. Phoenix just grinned.
"Well you'll find out later with that great big head of yours." Phoenix said, jokingly poking The Doctor in the forehead, and smirking. The Doctor rolled his eyes, but grinned.
"I never knew you could speak French?" The Doctor questioned, referring to Phoenix French earlier with the conversation in the carriage.
"Oh, I suppose I never told you. I'm from France. My family and I moved to London when I was… about 14. So I still remember the French language." Phoenix said, staring out the window into the light, soon becoming dark. There were some of the monks positioned outside instead of the guards. It's started. That means they've taken Rose already.
Phoenix walked away from the window, looking around the room. There were a lot of cool space-oriented items inside the room surprisingly, all on one shelf. She scavenged through the items, until she notice the little flute thing from the episode, Dalek. She giggled, making the Doctor glance at her curiously as she picked it up. She began to try out a few notes, figuring out how to work the instrument and what played which notes. She began to play the Doctor Who season 4 theme song. The Doctor grinned a little bit, and asked what song she was playing.
"My favorite song." Phoenix said mysteriously, and wiggled her eyebrows.
He sighs, but takes the answer. Phoenix smirks. She really was never going to give him a straight answer.
"We better go down to dinner. I suppose they might be waiting for us." Phoenix said, holding out her hand for The Doctor to take. The people downstairs were defiantly waiting for their help, if they knew it or not.
The Doctor nods, and takes her hand. As they walk out of the room, he asks, "Where did you get the dress?"
"I actually have no idea." Phoenix said, shaking her head slowly and laughing slightly.
"How would you… ah, never mind." The Doctor said as we reached the dining hall, where laughter emitted from the room behind the doors in front of us. Phoenix grinned, and pushed it open, letting them both into the room.
"Your companion begs an apology, Doctor. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her." The butler-monk man said.
The party was now sitting in a grand dining room, with a long table big enough to hold at least fifty men. It was decorated with a table liner, and a beautiful candle centerpiece. Let's not forget the food, of course. It was a nice dinner, with ham and green beans, and soup even.
"Oh, that's all right. Save her a wee bit of ham." The Doctor said, and Phoenix almost laughed at that. But, with the ounce of self-control she had, kept it in.
"The feral child could probably eat it raw." The queen said, humorously.
"Excuse me for a second." Phoenix said, barely holding in her laughter. She stood up from the table, and walked out the door, keeping her composure for just a little while longer…
Phoenix walked into a garden, filled with roses and lilies and violets and a fountain in the middle, and properly bust out laughing. Rose, eating raw meat? That was the day she got to see pigs fly. Well, it's entirely possible for pigs to fly on a different planet… damn it. That was going to be her first request on traveling. Going to a planet where pigs fly. Phoenix kept laughing at the thought. She looked up at the shining full moon, her hair and dress blowing behind her in the wind. To anyone else, they would say she looked peaceful. But that was far from the truth. Her thoughts had seemed to have strayed to the dark parts of her mind, to the part that asked all the questions no one ever voiced, that no one ever wanted to ask aloud.
Why her? That was the biggest question in Phoenix's mind. Why her, out of all the people out there, to get chosen to be put into the greatest universe ever? It made no sense to her. She took a deep breath, wishing for those thoughts to go away. She enjoyed just taking things as it went along, without a care in the world. There wasn't time for those thoughts. She continued to stare at the moon, and a smile slid onto her face. She would get to stand there, up on the moon. Judoon platoon upon the moon. The day the Doctor meets Martha Jones, savior of the earth. Well, and Phoenix meeting Martha too, supposedly.
Phoenix slowly walked over to a bench near the crystal fountain and sat down. She would get to go on a lot of adventures with the Doctor actually. And not all of them good. Pompeii, Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Slitheen, the planet Midnight, the end of the universe. And then there were those good moments, the ones that made the bad moments tolerable. Meeting companions, saving worlds. The running too. Ah, the running. That was one of her favorite parts. And then him. The Doctor. One may tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel. If only Reinette knew how true that was. Phoenix supposed it was her life quote now. For The Doctor was the angel, and the monsters are the demons. She remembered, watching the TV show sometimes and wondering why people stuck through it all. But after being here, really truly being here, she could see why.
The Doctor was such an idol to so many people Phoenix knew at home… her old home. Millions of people loved him, probably much more than she did. But she was the one with the chance to actually be there with him. Someone would have gotten it sooner or later. It just happened to be Phoenix. She wasn't special in anyway, nor was she incredibly smart or fast. Just normal. Well, nothing made sense now. Things making sense ruined the fun, didn't it? Truthfully, knowing everything was horrible and ruined the fun of the mystery. But it could also be useful.
Phoenix then realized she was rambling inside her brain. That's new. She hadn't ever rambled before. Well, actually, there was that one time… Phoenix mentally slapped herself. That was really weird. Maybe something happened during the pass between universes? Phoenix's eyes widened. She could have had her appearance change! She hasn't exactly gotten to see herself in the mirror yet, so…
Phoenix sprinted across the grass quietly and in through the front doors, shutting them softly. She couldn't be heard, in case the monks were around. That would be quite bad. Really bad actually.
Phoenix tiptoed up the wooden steps, really trying to make no noise. But, the top step made a huge creaking noise. "Shit…" Phoenix muttered under her breath, and noticed a door toward her right, and she quickly walked inside. Luckily, it happened to be a bedroom with a mirror!
Phoenix stepped in front of a mirror, only to gasp loudly and step back, tripping on a loose wooden board from the floor and falling backwards. Well, she did defiantly change… She slowly stood up again, looking back into the mirror.
She now had straight black hair with one golden streak in the front. And she really meant gold. It was a bright, sparkling gold. She fiddled with it slightly, mesmerized. Phoenix then walked closer to the mirror to realize she had silver eyes now. Silver! Her face structure was a bit different, and her body was skinnier than before. She was more filled out in different areas, and her legs were like sticks. Phoenix knew she probably changed, but not like that.
Then, a crash came from the door, and she turned around to notice two monks standing there. They had crashed the door down! Phoenix frowned. God that was a lot of strength they had there. Was there any possible way to run? No? Dammit.
They both stepped forward and grabbed her arms, putting them behind her back. Yep, she was right. Ouch! She got pushed forward, toward the door and out of the room. Ok, they weren't knocking her out so… where were they taking her? She was really hoping the answer wasn't anything gory. Seriously.
But then, the two monks let go of her and backed up, eyes wide. Phoenix looked confused for a moment, until she glanced down and saw her hands glowing. Oh, well, guess she wasn't going to get to see where they were going to take her. Phoenix smirked, and waved goodbye to the two monks. And then she realized; The Doctor. She had to leave without saying goodbye.
"Goodbye Doctor." Phoenix muttered, as she disappeared into a glowing flash of golden light.
I hope you liked the chapter! :)
