Hi again everyone! Yay, it's another chapter! This one... it took me a bit longer to write, because I hit one part in the story where for a while I really didn't know how to continue it... yeah. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this chapter!
(Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who. I only own my OC, Phoenix)
"Exterminate!"
Phoenix closes her eyes tightly, waiting for the pain to come, but it never does come. She slowly opened one eye and noticed the Dalek just standing there, not moving. Phoenix relaxed, and smiled slightly. Well, luckily, this Dalek decided not to kill her. Now she just had to figure out why.
Phoenix crossed her arms. "Are you going to kill me?" She questioned teasingly, a hint of a smirk on her face.
"I am armed. I will kill. It is my purpose." The Dalek exclaimed, almost as if it was arguing with itself.
"Yeah, I know, and I'll have to admit you've been doing a bloody good job. 100 men down! Good job. I really hated those guys…" Phoenix said, her eyes burning brightly with hate. Like, actually burning. They were flaming red.
"You were in the cell next to mine." The Dalek stated in its robotic monotone voice like normal.
"Yeah, I was." Phoenix says, raising an eyebrows, wondering where this was going.
"We have a shared suffering." It stated again. Phoenix nodded slowly, agreeing. She still didn't see what the Daleks point here was though.
"We could join forces to defeat the humans." It declared, its eyestalk staring directly at Phoenix.
Phoenix, at first, just stood there in shock. A Dalek just proposed an Alliance. That's just… impossible! And she was the first person to witness this! Should she accept this? It could defiantly come in useful, especially later on. But then again… what would it expect it to do? Because she wouldn't kill. That's the one thing she refused to do. She made up her mind soon, and grinned slightly.
"Ok. Now, we can't let people believe we're in an alliance though, so act like your holding me hostage or something." Phoenix said, hiding her smile soon afterwards. She would have to hide it from everyone, especially the Doctor. God, he was going to get really pissed off at her, wasn't he?
The Dalek then activates one of the cameras, and a hologram picture of The Doctor, Rose, and those other people popped up. The Dalek and Phoenix both turn to face it. Phoenix immediately put on her mask, but this time it was one of a distressed face. She felt it was kind of scary she could put on masks so easily, but it was useful sometimes.
"Open the bulkhead or Phoenix dies!" The Dalek screeched, going with the charade Phoenix mentioned.
"You're alive!" The Doctor and Rose exclaimed at the same time.
"You really can't get rid of me." Phoenix said, rolling her eyes. Seriously, how could she die now and the Doctor remember her future? Well, time can be re-written, but that's not the point…
"I thought you were dead." The Doctor said, sentiment in his voice showing very vividly. Phoenix started to feel slightly bad about teaming up with the Dalek…
"Open the bulkhead!" The Dalek exclaimed, waving its eyestalk everywhere. "What use are emotions if you will not save the woman you love?"
"I killed her once. I can't do it again." The Doctor said, a heartfelt look in his eyes, and he presses the button to open the bulkhead. The projection cut off.
Phoenix stared at the area where the hologram had just been shown. Ok, now she felt really bad about teaming up with the Dalek. But she probably wouldn't have survived if she hadn't… and the Doctor would kill her for that. So teaming up was the best choice… right?
She turned and walked after the Dalek, tapping on her side as she went along. 1-2-3-4. 1-2-3-4. That beat would always be there when she tapped. The Master's drumbeat. She literally couldn't tap without it being that beat. It was a habit she developed back in her old universe.
The Dalek and Phoenix both stepped into an elevator which would send them up to Van Statten's office. Phoenix was getting really nervous. What would happen up there? The Dalek wanted to kill Van Statten of course, and she wasn't sure she was going to stop it. She wanted to kill him as much as it did. But was that really the way? Dumping him off on the streets with no memory was probably much better. But if the Dalek got close enough to kill him and no one stopped him, she defiantly wouldn't be that person.
The elevator arrived, making a dinging noise as the doors slid open, revealing the people inside. Phoenix stepped out first, followed by the Dalek. Her eyes scanned the room, seeing all who was there. The Doctor, Rose, Adam, some random lady who comes in handy later, and Van Statten. Perfect. Everyone's here.
"Van Statten. You tortured us. Why?" The Dalek exclaimed, moving slowly closer to him, while Statten backed up, scared.
"I wanted to help you. I just, I don't know. I was trying to help. I thought if we could get through to you, if we could mend you. I wanted you better. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry! I swear, I just wanted you to talk!" Van Statten exclaimed, backing up into a wall as the Dalek gets extremely close.
Phoenix scoffed. Yeah, right. Because torturing things is a way to get people to talk. Idiot.
"Then hear me talk now. Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!" The Dalek exclaimed, about to exterminate Van Statten.
"Don't do it! Don't kill him! You don't have to do this anymore. There must be something else, not just killing. What else is there? What do you want?" Rose exclaimed to the Dalek.
"I want freedom." The Dalek randomly said, turning toward a pair of stairs. Ok, well, time to go up to the roof basically.
The Dalek blasts a hole in the ceiling, and a beam of light shines down from outside. Both the Dalek and Phoenix ran, well in the Daleks case slid, toward the light. A slightly insane escapes Phoenix's throat.
"I thought I'd never see sunlight again." She said, moving her hand around under the light and smiling brightly at the feeling. She hadn't been in any sort of light, no artificial, and much less real, so it was only natural she felt weird in normal sunlight.
"How does it feel?" The Dalek asked Phoenix with slight longing in its voice. Which was surprising, considering emotion just doesn't show up in Daleks voices.
"See for yourself." Phoenix said, stepping to the side to let the Dalek completely into the sunlight.
The Dalek casing opened slowly, making a hissing sort of noise, and inside revealed a creature similar to an octopus. It was tan colored with tentacle feelers and one eye in the middle. It stuck one of the feelers out and into the sunlight, to feel it.
"Get out of the way, Phoenix, get out of the way now!" Phoenix heard the Doctor yell. She growled slightly, and turned around to face the Doctor. "No."
"That thing killed hundreds of people." The Doctor said, trying to show Phoenix reason. He had fought the Daleks in the time war, they were the reason his home planet was gone. He wanted them dead!
"It's not the one pointing the gun at me." Phoenix said, raising her eyebrows. She rolled her eyes slightly, not understanding how the Doctor was seeing reason. The Dalek had changed! Yes, that was bad, but you don't need to kill it!
"I've got to do this. I have to end it. The Daleks destroyed Gallifrey, everyone I knew. I've got almost nothing left." The Doctor said, his face still a straight line, but his eyes betraying his every thought. Sadness. He really was upset.
"Look at it." Phoenix said, scooting slightly to the side so the Doctor could see the Dalek.
"What's it doing?" The Doctor asked, studying the Dalek who was just sitting in the sunlight, feeling it.
"It only wanted sunlight. I was locked in a dungeon for four months, no light shown, not even artificial. The Dalek has been down there longer." Phoenix said, sticking her hand out into the sunlight again. The feeling…
"But it can't…" The Doctor said, frowning and still holding the gun.
"It couldn't kill Van Statten and it couldn't kill me. What about you Doctor? What are you starting to change into? Don't let the time war ruin your life, please." Phoenix said, looking into the Doctor's eyes pleadingly.
"I couldn't. I wasn't… Oh Phoenix, everyone's dead." The Doctor said, burying his head into her shoulder. Phoenix wrapped her arms around him, slightly awkwardly, and hugged him.
"I'm always here." Phoenix whispered into The Doctor's ear. It was a true statement. At least, for him.
"Why do we survive?" The Dalek called over, sadness actually in its voice. Too many surprises…
"I don't know." The Doctor said, just as sad as the Dalek. He was sulking a bit, actually.
"I am the last of the Daleks." The Dalek said, slowly.
"You're not even that. Rose did more than regenerate you. You've absorbed her DNA. You're mutating." The Doctor said, frowning at the Dalek. Could it be… the Doctor almost felt… sorry, for it?
"Into what?" The Dalek said plainly. But you could tell from the question it was scared and worried.
"Something new. I'm sorry." Phoenix said, tears building up slightly in her eyes. She sort of got, attached, to the Dalek in the past hour they had been together.
"Isn't that better?" Rose asked, talking for the first time since they had gotten there.
"Not for a Dalek." The Doctor said, slightly sadly.
"I can feel so many ideas. So much darkness. Rose, give me orders. Order me to die." The Dalek commanded Rose.
"I can't do that." Rose said, looking extremely sad.
"This is not life. This is sickness. I shall not be like you. Order my destruction Phoenix! Obey! Obey! Obey!" The Dalek commanded Phoenix. She was shocked for a moment that it asked her, but she nodded.
"Terminate." Phoenix said, a tear finally trailing down her face. She hadn't cried since chambers, but it still sort of stung her eyes.
"Are you frightened, Phoenix?" The Dalek asked her. Phoenix thought about it for a moment, but then shrugged.
"Yes. I'm also sad. Really really sad." She said, a few more tears slipping down her face as she touched the Daleks casing one more time before it floated up into the air.
"So am I. Exterminate." The Dalek said, a force field appearing around itself. It then properly exploded, leaving behind no trace that there was ever a Dalek.
Phoenix stared at the spot where the Dalek had just been. Tears streamed down her face, and sobs threatened to release from her throat. She slid down onto the concrete ground, crying. She wasn't sure why she was this sad, but it shook her to the core, and it was pretty bad.
The Doctor walked over to her, squatted down, and wrapped his arms around her. He was just as confused as she was as to why she was crying, but he wanted to comfort her anyways.
Phoenix glanced down, and noticed her hands glowing again. She frowned even deeper, and stood up, getting out of the Doctor's embrace. He stood up too.
"I'm leaving already. Goodbye you two." Phoenix said, waving a little and trying to smile. It looked more like a grimace.
The other two just looked at her sadly, not wanting her to go and feeling sorry for her. Jumping around just as sad events happened, that's gotta hurt.
Phoenix disappeared in a golden flash of light, leaving Rose and The Doctor to sort out the whole mess of the terrible museum. If Phoenix ever saw that place again, she would probably break down sobbing at the memories. She just tucked them away in the far corner of her mind, desperately trying to forget them. Because seriously, who would want to keep them?
Phoenix appeared on a very plush chair, which she sunk into immediately. She looked around, trying to see, as it was very dark. Night time.
It was very elegant, with cream walls and fine carvings. There was a bed toward one side, and a very nice fireplace on one of the walls.
Wait…. Fireplace… this was The Girl in the Fireplace! Phoenix smiled brightly. This had been one of her favorite episodes ever!
"Excusez-moi, qui êtes-vous ? Et comment avez-vous y arriver?" Phoenix heard a girl's voice ask. (Excuse me, who are you? And how did you get here?)
Ooh that would be Reinette wouldn't it? And, judging by the French, the Tardis hasn't arrived yet.
"Je suis désolé, je cherchais mon ami, qui a dit qu'il serait ici. Il ne semble pas qu'il est ici, et je suis également perplexe quant à pourquoi il a choisi une petite fille la chambre à coucher. Je suis désolé si j'ai dérangé, vous." Phoenix replied, smiling slightly. (I am sorry, I was looking for my friend, who said he would be here. It does not seem he is here, and I am also confused as to why he chose a little girl's bedroom. I am sorry if I disturbed you.)
"Oh, il n'est aucune perturbation à tous. J'étais simplement curieux." She replied softly. Phoenix smiled brightly. (Oh, it is no disturbance at all. I was merely curious.)
"Esprit si je attendre un peu plus longtemps que? J'espère qu'il sera ici bientôt. Je pourrais vous tenir compagnie." Phoenix asked, still smiling. Reinette was a very nice young girl, you know. (Mind if I wait a little longer than? I should hope he would be here soon. I could keep you company.)
"Oui, ce serait beau." She replies, smiling in the dim lighting we had. (Yes, that would be nice.)
Phoenix realized something then. Reinette was letting her, a complete stranger, into her house. Well, what were they teaching girls in French at this point in time? Goodness!
"Donc, comment en êtes-vous arrivé ici ? Je n'ai pas entendu une porte ouverte." Reinette asks. Innocent question as it is, Phoenix didn't know the answer. (So, how did you get in here? I did not hear a door open.)
"Je ne suis pas sûr. J'ai été dans un endroit un instant, la prochaine, je suis ici. C'est très confus." Phoenix replied as honestly as she could. She didn't feel like lying to this girl. (I am not sure. I was in a place one moment, the next, I am here. It is very confusing.)
"C'est étrange. Comment savez-vous que votre ami sera ici si vous ne saviez pas que vous veniez ici vous-même?" Reinette asks. She was full of clever questions wasn't she? Well, she did grow up to be one of the smartest people in history. Sort of. (That is strange. How do you know your friend will be here if you didn't know you were coming here yourself?)
"C'est un talent de toutes sortes. Je viens de trier savent des choses parfois." Phoenix said. She hadn't really ever truly thought about it. (It is a talent of sorts. I just sort of know things sometimes.)
"That is an interesting talent. Wonder where you got it from?" Reinette asked. Phoenix smirked. English meant the Tardis had just landed on the other side of that fireplace over there.
"Well, yes, I would rather like to know myself." Phoenix replied, smirking slightly.
Then, indistinct talking came from the fireplace, which Phoenix immediately recognized as The Doctor talking with Rose and Mickey. Reinette looked at her, and Phoenix smiled softly at her.
"Maybe you should go check out the fireplace then?" Phoenix commented, gesturing slightly to the fireplace.
She nods, and walks over to her fireplace, squatting down in front of it.
Luckily, Phoenix could hear the whole conversation from the place she sat.
"Hello."
"Hello."
"What's your name?"
"Reinette."
"Reinette, that's a lovely name. Can you tell me where you are at the moment, Reinette?"
"In my bedroom."
"And where's your bedroom? Where do you live, Reinette?
"Paris, of course."
"Paris, right!"
"Monsieur, what are you doing in my fireplace?"
"Oh, it's just a routine fire check. Can you tell me what year it is?"
Of course I can. Seventeen hundred and twenty seven."
"Right, lovely. One of my favorites. August is rubbish though. Stay indoors. Okay, that's all for now. Thanks for your help. Hope you enjoy the rest of the fire. Night, night."
"Goodnight Monsieur."
Reinette stood up and turned toward Phoenix, an incredulous look in her eyes. Phoenix laughed slightly at that.
"That man was weird." She said, sticking out her tongue slightly. Phoenix grinned. Yeah, he was defiantly weird.
"He sounded weird! Asking for the year… how could he not know?" Phoenix said, sort of teasing him from afar.
"Maybe he's crazy." Reinette said, smirking. Phoenix giggled slightly.
"Maybe." Phoenix said, staring at the fireplace slightly. He really was kind of crazy. But the sexy kind of crazy…
God, Phoenix, where are your thoughts going! No, no. Pull your thoughts together!
"He was hot though." Reinette said, smirking widely. Phoenix smiled.
"Oh really? Do tell." Phoenix said, leaning closer as if someone was about to tell some really big information.
That's how Phoenix spent the next couple of months with Reinette. Being stuck in her room, while Reinette was forced to sneak food up. They had fun though, and traded stories. That was quite nice. Was a bit boring for Phoenix though, being stuck in the room the whole time. She had the need for adventure coursing through her veins.
But of course, it was only a short wait longer.
Well, now we're starting The Girl in the Fireplace! It's the first full episode actually done in this story so far... yeah, I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
