Georgina Sparks smiled like the cat that ate the canary; she now had all the dirt she needed to bury the reputations of all of the most important heirs of New York's elite, and by default their families: she knew all about Nathaniel Archibald and Serena Van Der Woodsen's ardent and illicit relationship in the sunny coast of Florida, Blair Waldorf's undying loyalty and perpetual infatuation for said Mr. Archibald and Charles Bass' questionable and evident predilection for the gorgeous Waldorf heiress.
Oh, life couldn't be better and revenge couldn't taste sweeter. Georgina had only to wait patiently for the situation of maximum impact to present itself and to allow her to finally reveal all the juicy secrets.
Nathaniel Archibald paced back and forth around the Bass's suite. His normally flawless golden hair was disheveled and he looked positively on the verge of a nervous breakdown. That was how Chuck found him after his brief encounter with Blair on Central Park.
- Oh my dear friend, I am the most neglecting gentleman! I had been so happy about the idea of spending the rest of my life with Miss Van Der Woodsen that I forgot all about Miss Waldorf! I bet she still thinks we're imminently due to get engaged anytime soon! – exclaimed Nathaniel in despair.
Chuck stared at Nate for seconds on end, dumbfounded; he couldn't possibly believe anyone could ever be able to get Blair Waldorf out of their heads for more than a few seconds. Nathaniel must really be thick, Chuck thought in conclusion, he really had me fooled about saying that he already had all the details in order.
- Chuck, is everything all right? – asked Nate with concern after noticing how his friend had been rendered speechless, something that very seldom occurred.
Breaking out of his reverie Chuck poured himself a drink while trying to come up with a plan that would hurt everyone less but still make Blair be heartbroken enough for her to run straight into his waiting arms.
Blair had sensed something was off all morning long, she suspected it when she knew Nate was in town but hadn't visited her and her suspicions grew stronger when she encountered the irritating but mysteriously charming Bass heir in Central Park. Now, as Nate Archibald himself entered her parlor all unkempt and disheveled and nothing like his usual golden-boy self, Blair definitely knew her suspicions had been right all along. When Nate spoke next in a trembling voice, Blair's heart sank in anticipation and fear.
- My dearest Miss Waldorf, I hope you will have it in your heart to forgive me and will give me the chance to explain. – Nathaniel Archibald said, looking more vulnerable than Blair had ever seen him.
Serena Van Der Woodsen had been locked up in her room, refusing to see anybody and rudely dismissing any servants who dared enter her chambers. She was still nursing her massive hangover, but worse yet, she was prostrate in bed and unable to move consumed by soul-consuming guilt. After a few hours in the carriage she had been able to remember a few bits of what had happened and pieced it all together; she knew she had done wrong: her reputation would be ruined if anyone was to find out or if she conceived a child, her family would disown her and she had probably ruined her best friend's best chance at the true fairytale happy ending she so rightfully deserved. It was true Serena had always despised marriages and had always opposed the idea of marriage for money or social status; however, she was terrified of her family's reaction to her drunken mistake. Serena unwillingly got out of her canopy bed and started making herself presentable; she knew that she would have to take do some serious damage control if she wanted to preserve her reputation and her friendship with Blair.
Blair was positively enraged and outraged and livid. She managed to keep it all under control, hiding beneath a cool and detached façade. After she dismissed Mr. Archibald and officially broke off whatever relationship they ever had for good she finally felt free to give in to her inner turmoil. Angry tears rolled down her porcelain cheeks and she fell to the floor, unable to hold herself up any longer. There it was, what she had feared the most yet again repeating itself: the rejection, the knowledge of never being good enough for anyone, that feeling of utter loneliness and of being so unloved by the world. Hearing the door creak open she looked up, ready to humiliate the foolish soul that dared see her in such a vulnerable and broken state. It was Serena.
Serena entered the Waldorf's tea parlor trying to control her already spilling tears and looking uncharacteristically pale and miserable, nothing like her effortless perfect self. Blair loathed the very sight of her and desperately fought the un lady-like urge to hurl something at her so-called best friend's pretty face.
With one glance at Blair's enraged face, Serena knew it was too late: Blair already knew and she wouldn't give her the chance to explain. Serena had a little hope though so she risked an unsteady step towards her fallen friend.
- Blair, please, I thought everything was good between us. – Serena said in a peaceful tone of voice, trying to calm Blair down.
- It was, until I found out you engaged in sexual relations with my almost-fiancée. – Blair spat out with as much venom in her voice as she could fathom.
- How did you find out? – Serena asked with dread, knowing the answer full well.
- Mr. Archibald told me. At least he felt he owed it to me to tell the truth.
- Blair… I don't know what to say. – Serena managed to stutter.
- Please, don't bother saying anything. – Blair said in a cold tone. – I wouldn't believe you anyway.
Blair stood up from her current position on the floor because she felt too vulnerable. She straightened some imaginary creases on her elegant gown and stared Serena down with a death glare.
- Blair, please, it only was just a dru… - Serena tried to explain.
- You know? – Blair said cruelly – I always knew you were nothing more than a secret cheap, attention seeker whore, but I never took you for a liar too. - Blair continued, feeling satisfied at Serena's look of utter hurt.
A few moments passed in which Serena fought for control, urging her tears to remain at bay; while Blair secretly reveled in the sight of those blue eyes watering. Serena finally lowered her eyes and asked in a very vulnerable voice.
- Blair, this whole situation is affecting me too. How can I fix this?
- You don't Serena. – Blair answered with a cutting edge to her voice – You just stay away from me and anyone related to me for that matter. – She added a dangerous quality to her tone.
Serena saw in humiliation that she was being dismissed and tried to gather all the pride she had left as she stepped away from her former best friend and towards the huge mahogany door. Before she crossed the mahogany threshold, though, Blair stepped closer and said to her almost in a whisper:
- You're done here. No one in this island would ever want to be related in any way to the biggest disgrace of the Van Der Woodsen family.
A/N: So we got some bitchy Blair here, hope you enjoyed reading this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it... especially because I tried to include as many quotes from the series as possible (which meant I got to rewatch season 1!). Please don't forget to review! I really appreciate all of you, my readers :3
