"Wait so, she didn't tell you anything, like not a single thing at all?!" Vi was practically yelling at the smaller girl in the room with her.
At least she's not shaking the poor thing around this time. Caitlyn thought to herself as she entered the room to Vi again, questioning their reluctant guest from before.
"I…I think she was really worried about you. Sh…she didn't say much...at all! A…and I was really scared. So I didn't ask her anything. I'm s-sorry." The white-haired girl meekly answered.
"Sorry? For what? You did nothing wrong? If anything, I should be thanking you. We really owe you one, me and Cait both. Right, Cupcake?" Vi smiled, waved off the apology, and thanked the young woman sitting on the bed beside her, even turning to Caitlyn for confirmation. To which, the sheriff only flashed a faint smile and a light nod. As simple as their actions were, they had brought a smile to their guest's lips. "T... Thank you." A barely audible response leaked from her.
The hospital room was not the most spacious place, it was originally planned to house 2 patients, plus a small area for a person visiting. However, due to her specific demands, Caitlyn had convinced the orderlies to move another bed into the room. Her reasoning for doing this was, Sumi was supposedly a VIP whose life was in danger if she was not monitored by the sheriff and her trusted partner. A flimsy excuse considering the state that she was in when presenting it, not considering how the supposed VIP was the one making the demand, with the sheriff only nodding in agreement. Regardless, the room now has 3 beds in it, with Vi taking up the middle bed, Caitlyn's to the right of her, and their guest sleeping nearest to the window. Her bed was the one that Jinx had been sitting on earlier and had jumped on with her boots, leaving behind large boot prints on the pristine white sheets. Vi had considered saying something about that but Caitlyn's lack of comments and attention made the enforcer feel it wasn't necessary.
With Jinx having broken in earlier, the window nearest to Vi's bed was now also broken. So the once moderately sized and decorated hospital room now looks less than presentable. Good thing Vi couldn't care less about the state of the room she was in, only casually mentioning to the other 2 about the broken glass on the floor. No, what had truly captured her complete interest were the events of tonight. First, a girl from god-knows-where fell on her head. Second, a bunch of crooks somehow got the better of her. Finally, a sudden visit from her estranged sister.
What the fuck is up with tonight? Vi thought to herself, briefly pausing her conversation with Sumi just as Caitlyn entered the room.
"Hey! Cupcake, you got a…" Vi waved at her partner but stopped as she noticed Caitlyn had that look on her. The look Vi had become far too familiar with. The look that voicelessly screamed, "TIRED – TALK LATER". Characteristics of said look included sunken eyes, uncharacteristically frazzled hair, and slightly slumped shoulders. Vi had been with Caitlyn long enough to know, that when the blue-haired sheriff looks like that, it's best just to let her rest. God knows she's gonna try to do more, somehow. Vi thought to herself, remembering all the times she's come into work, only to find Caitlyn sleeping at her desk, or passing out on the floor.
"Can't be good for your back, Cupcake," Vi whispered to herself.
"It can wait, get some rest Cait. Sorry if we were a bit loud earlier." Vi said to Caitlyn, the use of we in that statement had actually got Vi a slightly confused/ annoyed look from their guest, almost to say "You were the loud one, I barely spoke!" which Vi found amusing.
So I can get a different kind of reaction out of you, huh? Vi thought, thinking back to how the girl she had just been talking to only seemed to express solelyworry at everything the taller woman had to say.
Caitlyn raised an eyebrow at Vi's words, then quietly head to her bed and collapsed onto the sheets with her face turned towards the wall and her back facing Vi.
"Goodnight Cupcake!" Vi spoke, slightly louder than necessary, in a pitch slightly higher than her normal speaking voice, just trying to lighten Caitlyn's mood just one last time before they rest. To this, the sheriff did not react too strongly, only raising her hand to wave to Vi before letting herself sink into slumber, trying to get as much rest as she can. Truth be told, Vi had wanted to talk to Caitlyn some more, but she figured it would have been a somewhat one-way conversation, plus Caitlyn needed as much rest as she could. So the enforcer turned to the corner of the room and closed her eyes, hoping tomorrow wouldn't be as eventful as tonight.
Seeing as the only two people she had ever talked to in this strange and new world had just been viciously attacked and were finally allowed to rest, Sumi left their room and wandered the hospital. Caitlyn had ensured that Sumi would at least get a room to herself for the night, and for this, the young girl was thankful. However, this world was so novel to her, everything looked similar to things she knows, but was also just different enough that she could not tell what they were exactly, the items were more "mechanical" if that makes any sense. So Sumi, unable to resist her curiosity, fought through her tiredness from the ordeal earlier and decided to explore her surroundings.
She wandered the long hallways of the hospital, trying to stay out of the way of any approaching doctor and orderly. She knew she must've looked a scene, this tiny girl wearing clothes too big for her, having to hold onto her pants every few steps to make sure they don't fall down, thank goodness it was so late, and only very rarely did she see anyone. Her eyes surveyed the rooms along the hallways, noting how the electrical(?) equipment in this world seemed to have this strange, otherworldly glow about them. The intrusive thoughts of touching, and prodding the weird pipes containing this glowing energy had crossed her mind many times, but she managed to fight them off.
"If only I had my phone with me…" Sumi thought to herself as she stood studying the energy coursing through the clear pipes.
"Oy! You there! What are you doing?" A voice echoed through the empty hallway Sumi was walking down, followed by footsteps quickly approaching her, the suddenness and seriousness of the voice and accompanying footsteps caused her to jump a bit before turning toward the source of the voice. It was the doctor who treated her, Sumi didn't quite catch her name, but she knew her loitering would most likely be chastised here.
"I-I…uhm. I was just…ex…exploring?" She quietly mumbled out a response, her eyes planted firmly on the tiles of the hospital floor, as the doctor was now standing in front of her. Sumi only stood like a deer in headlights as the doctor scolded her.
"Exploring?! Does this place look like a dungeon? Do you think there's loot to find here? Unless you're trying to find more injuries, you're looking in the wrong place." She stood, her hands folded before her chest, her tone almost like a concerned yet disappointed mother scolding a child caught sneaking out of bed late at night. Sumi's cheeks flushed red, clueless on how to even respond, she could only stammer out some inaudible excuses for herself. Sumi knew she shouldn't have been wandering around a hospital late at night, she'd heard stories before about possibly seeing ghosts, or worse, causing doctors and nurses more problems. The girl felt a sense of guilt, accompanied by a strange sense of ease as she had been lucky enough, not to see any ghost that night, or perhaps some inkling of disappointment. She couldn't know for sure, one thing was clear, however, at that exact moment, guilt was the most prevalent sentiment in her heart.
"Little lady, for both your sake and mine, please return to your room and rest, okay? I am dangerously close to having a migraine tonight." She pinched the bridge of her nose as she spoke, clearly tired, her thick-framed glasses slightly pushed up by her fingers. Sumi could only nod and quickly scurry off, not even daring to look back and ask the doctor's name, to which Dr Ray only sighed, as she pushed up her glasses and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
The white-haired girl hurried back to her appointed room, not wanting to anger the doctor lady anymore she immediately hopped onto the bed, and buried her face in the pillow. Vi craned her neck to look over due to the sudden figure entering her room, wanting to ask but decided she lacked the care, Caitlyn did not react. But Sumi did not notice and only prayed that when she woke, she'd be back in her actual room, in her home, with her sister having made breakfast and just waiting for her to join.
