Whispers bounced around a crowded room, filling the usually quiet home with more chatter than what was held in a normal week. On most days the simple apartment only housed two, You and Riko. An occasional hum of the television or string of a melody filled the halls but lately it had been quiet with the two having been so busy recently. Getting prepared for a baby was not an easy, nor cheap, feat.
The guests within the room that created the chaos didn't come invited though, in fact their presence was news to even the apartment owners.
Sitting on the couch, and the few unlucky ones on the floor, were the usual friends of You and Riko. Chika, Kanan, Mari, Dia, Ruby, Hanamaru, and Yoshiko.
They had all gotten a message days ago from their two friends about the new addition to the Watanabe family the moment she was born and acted as one unit to go and visit the two new mothers at the hospital. After they all left the parents that day to become more familiar with their baby though, in the waiting room they all planned to throw a surprise party for them when the baby was finally delivered home.
They had even come to the apartment earlier than prepared, as to be of some assistance with helping pick up the mess the two had left when they were rushing out the door in a hurry.
Now though, they all tried to contain their excitement as they waited. It wasn't long before the door knob could be heard being riddled with. Everyone stared in silence, Chika nearly exploding from excitement, as the door slowly opened.
"Surprise!"
The 7 members all shouted in unison, catching You and Riko off guard. They stood at the door in shock, Riko held her hand over her mouth as You widely smiled while holding the baby's car seat in one hand and all of their belongings from the hospital in the other.
Besides their friends' faces being the first thing they saw, instantly their noses were hit with the fresh smell of food. It was a feast, based on You's expertise, ranging from finger foods to luxury meats. It was obvious whose job it was getting food.
Chika ran over, rushing the two into the house as everyone began to help.
"Come on in! We hope you guys don't mind but we thought it'd be nice to have a little get together."
Kanan grabbed You's luggage she held from her hands as she waved her and Riko over towards the couch,
"We cleaned up a little too."
They walked over towards the cleared seat as all their friends got up to make room for them. Though, as soon as they sat down all eyes went to the little body in the car seat seated between the two.
You could see their excitement beaming and looked over at Riko for approval. With a swift nod, You asked,
"So, who wants to hold the baby first?"
And just like a symphony of voices, everyone rushed forward. You laughed before carefully taking their child out of the car seat. As she did so she quietly whispered,
"It's going to be a long day, sorry."
After the exhausting day of festivities, or at least exhausting in You and Riko's eyes after their past few days, the party was nearing its end.
Everyone sat around the baby in awe as You rocked her in her bed she brought out.
"You know, at the hospital you guys had said you weren't sure on the name, zura. What did you two end up going with?"
Hanamaru asked. You smiled with pride as she whispered,
"Shizuku. Like a raindrop."
You looked over at Riko to see her approval only for her to be asleep. Chika's hands hovered over to play a trick before You slapped them away.
"We should let Riko rest."
Dia voiced out as she stood up. Though everyone wanted to spend just the smallest moments more with Shizuku, they also didn't want to be a bother.
Each of the girls got up, saying their goodbyes and taking longer with the baby.
You walked them all to the door, thanking them for all they had done and already inviting them over for another get together soon.
As You finally locked the door behind her she sighed. It was hard to keep a positive face when she was exhausted. No matter how prepared you think you are, a baby will kick you right off your feet.
Letting the tension in her shoulders drop, You began to pick up after her guests. Though they were kind and cleaned after themselves, there were still some of the extra food and drinks laying around.
As You tidied the place up she glanced over at Riko and Shizuku. They looked so at peace with the world. You placed down the plates she held before walking over towards the two of them.
Riko had her mouth slightly open as she leaned back on the sofa. Her hands rested over her stomach as if she were an old grandmother. Looking over at Shizuku, You couldn't help but giggle as Shizuku looked just about the same.
"Yeah, you're definitely Riko's daughter."
You kneeled down beside the crib, placing one of her fingers in Shizuku's grasp. It was incredible to see how much of a difference the size could be. She had so much growing to do. Still though, You leaned her head against the cribs frame as she whispered,
"But, what makes you my daughter?"
Being a replica was no problem in You's eyes, in fact she welcomed the idea of two Riko's, but she wondered just what was going to make her a Watanabe. She was just a baby so only time would tell.
Maybe she would love the sea? Or even pick up her high school obsession with different types of outfits and uniforms?
As You was about to get up though, she felt the faintest grip on her finger making her stop in her tracks. Holding her breath, You watched as Shizuku peeked over at her. Both of their blue eyes met and You could only giggle with excitement.
Since babies needed to sleep so much, You had almost forgotten that Shizuku carried over her blue eyes.
Seeing that her expression carried a hint of annoyance, most likely from being bothered with so much, You moved her hand away.
"Well at the end of the day, you're Shizuku. That's what matters the most."
You leaned down, placing the most gentle kiss she could muster upon her forehead.
You got up, pleased with herself. Before she could get far though she could hear Riko waking up.
"Did they leave?"
Riko rubbed her eyes as she got up. You nodded her head,
"Yup, you were snoozvile."
Riko groaned, she hated falling asleep around people, mostly Chika and her pranks. You reassured her though,
"It's alright, everyone understood. Just go back to sleep, I'll clean up and keep an eye on Shizuku."
Riko peacefully sighed when she heard that. As much as she loved and wanted to help You, sometimes she just needed a break, especially now. Riko got up from the couch, walking over to You to place a kiss on her cheek.
"You know I love you."
You smiled, trying to be smug to cover the intense blush that was forming on her face.
"Hmm, I might love you too."
Riko feigned a gasp as she tapped You's shoulder, earning a laugh.
"I'm joking! I love you sooooo much!"
Riko smiled as she pinched You's blushing cheeks,
"That's what I like to hear. Wake me up in an hour please, I don't want to sleep all night."
You gave a salute as Riko walked off to their bedroom. Just a bit of rest would do her good, Riko thought. Then she could begin the real motherly planning.
Little did Riko know she was definitely not waking up until the next day.
She currently stood in the middle of the living room with the messiest bed head she had ever woken up to as she stared down her personal failed alarm clock.
While she would've been annoyed after walking in on You sleeping on the couch with Shizuku sleeping in the crib next to her, she could never stay mad at them. But she did have enough in her for a stern talking to.
Riko picked up Shizuku, immediately waking You as she moved the crib. As soon as You saw Riko though she pretended she was asleep once more, that was before Riko flicked her on the forehead. Immediately flinching from the impact, You rubbed her head,
"I just wanna start with saying I'm sorry, you just looked so peaceful!"
Riko sighed before she smiled a bit,
"It's fine, but I don't want you to overwork yourself. We're a team, remember?"
You nodded her head like a puppy being scolded. Even after so many years of being together, You still had the habit of taking on more than she could handle.
"Sorry, I just don't want you to overwork yourself. The doctor said you should relax for a while."
"And I will, but at least let me help in some ways."
You looked from the floor to Shizuku to the window, all avoiding Riko's eyes. That could only mean one thing, she wanted to voice something but was scared of rejection. Riko stared, waiting for her to speak. They wouldn't get anywhere if neither of them spoke their minds.
"Could we compromise?"
"How so?"
Riko was confused, how could you compromise raising a child. She just figured it was evenly split based on how each person was feeling that day.
"Give me a month, you just take it easy for 4-maybe 5- weeks and then I'll reel it back and you won't hear a peep out of me."
"What?"
Riko was surprised upon hearing that request and before she could question it more You put up her puppy dog eyes. Riko's ultimate weakness.
"Please, if you got hurt, or even overwhelmed at any point, I don't think I could forgive myself."
You stood there, practically begging Riko to just get better first. Putting her pride aside for a moment, Riko sighed.
"How about 3 weeks, but that's it. I don't want to turn into a couch potato."
"Deal!"
Riko smiled at how happy You looked. How lucky could she get, having to be persuaded to relax.
"Well, first things first, it's breakfast time. I'll make breakfast and watch Shizuku so you can-"
As You leaned over to grab Shizuku, Riko gave her a stern look, stopping her in her tracks. She retracted her arms as she nervously laughed,
"Or, you watched Shizuku and I'll cook."
Riko nodded, happy with the division of tasks. Riko sat down, putting her feet up on the couch as she watched her newborn sleep in her arms. Her dark brown hair had the slightest curl at the top of her head, tempting Riko to play with it as she did You's hair. She wondered if that would disappear with age or would she forever be cursed with unruly hair.
As Riko looked over at the girl who definitely gave her that genetic trait, she could see her intensely focused on her task. You scanned the fridge up and down, mumbling to herself as she took out ingredients. Riko could see the gears in her head turning, most likely trying to pick the best breakfast ever for their first day as a family back at home.
With a smile, Riko leaned back on the couch. She held Shizuku to her chest, gently running her finger across her face to feel her features. Her skin was the softest she had ever felt, it was like her and You had created the most perfect child to exist. Not biased in any type of way, of course.
Shizuku opened her eyes to her mother's touch, making Riko stop. Shizuku looked all around Riko's face before Riko spoke,
"Good morning."
With the voice of her mother, Shizuku smiled. Riko giggled with excitement at her reaction.
One thing Riko knew about parenting was that it was a difficult road, there would be things parents simply couldn't do to help or protect their child as they had to grow on their own. But, with each passing day their little family would learn together. And both You and Riko would soon realize that they'd fight against the world twice if it meant that their baby forever kept that same smile towards them as she has now.
But, first, they were home, and starting on that day they were finally a family.
