Okay so hopefully this chapter is pretty good. I have discovered that I absolutely suck at writing crime investigations, but I will do my best. So hopefully this doesn't suck.
Chapter 4: The Profile & Investigation
SPD, Springfield, MO
Cori gulped as the team stood in front of the police force. She looked to see Walker watching her, a smirk on his face. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
"We believe this unsub is a white male in his late thirties to early forties." Hotch started. "His targets are young girls who were child prodigies, highly intelligent for their ages."
"The girls also all suffered from immune disorders. This in addition to the amount of wounds that each victim received, leads us to believe that the unsub had a relative with a high IQ and an immune disorder." Spencer continued. "If this is so, then it explains the severe number of wounds."
"We have our technical analyst working on a suspect pool, but this unsub is not going to stand out." Derek continued. "Despite his grudge, this unsub is perfectly capable of separating his murderous life from his normal life so much so that no one would suspect him even if he were standing right in front of them."
"When we have more information, we will alert you all. Thank you." Hotch finished. The police officers got up and disbanded, leaving only the team standing in the room.
Derek's phone rang and he quickly answered it. "Hey, baby girl, what have you got?"
"I have a lot for you." Penelope replied. "I just finished that search and low and behold, there are only 3 people who had relatives with IQs of 178 or higher. 2 still live in Springfield but one recently moved back here not long ago: Frank Warner, who has a younger cousin named Dana; Mark James who has a younger sister named Joan; and Kyler Rogers, the older brother of our very own Cori."
"Like that's a shocker." Dave smirked.
"Excluding Cori, do any of them resemble the victims?" Charlotte asked.
"Just one, Dana." Penelope replied.
"Garcia, give us all you can on Frank and Dana." Spencer said.
"I'm on it." The team heard tapping as Penelope's fingers no doubt flew across her keyboard. "Here we are. Frank Warner, born in 1978 to Tyson and Makayla Warner. He was the only child and center of attention in his family until his parents adopted 10-year old Dana when he was 17. According to his school records, he was a star student, but around the time Dana was adopted, his grades began dropping and his attitude changed."
"What about Kyler?" Cori asked, her voice so soft the rest of the team had to check and make sure they had actually heard her.
"Ah, someone is curious about big brother huh?"
"Garcia, please, just look." Cori muttered.
At her desk, Penelope felt her heart break at the desperate tone in the 25-year-old's voice. "Okay, sweetheart." She answered and began typing again.
"Kyler's background is similar to Frank's with the obvious exception that Cori already lived with him. He was born in 1979 to Warren and Hannah Rogers. He was an only child until Cori's birth in 1989 when he was 10. He ran away from home not long after he turned 18 and there's not a trace of him since then, but about 2 weeks ago, he moved back to the area."
"Send us the addresses for Frank and Kyler." Hotch ordered, standing. "Karma and Callaghan, I want you two to go talk to Frank, see if you can find out anything." Said agents nodded and bolted from the room. Hotch turned towards Spencer and JJ. "JJ, Reid, I want you two at Kyler's. If you two find anything of suspect- "
"Hotch?" Hotch turned to see Cori standing, her heterochromatic eyes narrowed. "With all due respect, sir, I'd like to go with Reid to talk with Kyler."
"Rogers, at this point you're extremely close to the case. Not only do you fit the description of the victims to a tee, but one of our suspects is your brother."
"Exactly why I need to talk to him, sir. He may have ran away, but he's still my brother. We need answers." Cori locked her eyes with Hotch's. "Sir, I promise that I won't let the fact that he's my brother interfere with my job as an FBI agent."
Hotch thought for a moment before sighing. "Alright, Rogers," he said finally, putting his hands on his hips. "I'll let you go with Reid but I expect you to be professional."
Cori nodded. "I understand, sir."
Hotch turned to Spencer. "Reid, I want you to make sure Rogers sticks to professionalism. If at any time she seems to be forgetting that-"
"Pull her out immediately. Understood." Spencer replied, grinning slightly at the glare Hotch gave him.
"Alright. Meanwhile, Rossi, Morgan I want you two to go back to the abduction site. See if you can find anything." Dave and Derek nodded. Hotch nodded. "Alright, go."
Dave, Derek, Spencer and Cori walked out of the station as quickly as possible and to their vehicles. Spencer climbed into the driver's seat of his and Cori's as Cori climbed in the seat next to him.
Spencer looked at Cori as the younger stared out the window. "Are you okay?" He asked.
Cori turned and looked at him. "I'm not sure. We're going to see my older brother, someone I haven't seen since I was at least 8 years old. I'm not sure how to feel."
"I'm sure it'll be okay. What's the worse that could happen?"
"Kyler could hate me." Cori looked out the window again as Spencer pulled out into the street.
"He's your brother. I'm sure he loves you." Spencer tried to reassure her as he drove. Cori didn't say anything.
30 minutes later, they pulled up to the address. Spencer quickly got out, but Cori hesitated a minute. "It's fine." She mumbled. "It's just Kyler." Finally, she got out of the car and ran up to the porch just as Spencer knocked on the door.
The door slowly opened and a man, about Spencer's height, revealed himself. He had dark brown hair and bright green eyes. Though he was older now, Cori recognized her brother. "What do you want?" He asked, glaring at the two agents.
Spencer and Cori held up their badges and Spencer spoke first. "Kyler Rogers? I'm SSA Spencer Reid and this is SA Cori Rogers." Cori saw a glimpse of recognition cross Kyler's face. "We're with the FBI and we need to ask you a few questions."
"Sure. Whatever." Kyler said, shrugging, stepping aside to let them in. As they entered, Cori looked around. Kyler took a seat in a chair, Cori and Spencer following suit. "So what do you want to know?"
"What do you know about the murders occurring?" Spencer asked.
"Not much. Just that they're girls who disappear then when found they're dead." Kyler replied.
"Did you know any of the girls?"
Kyler shook his head. "No. never knew them. Been kind of keeping to myself since I moved back to town. Other then work, I don't really have a reason to get out."
"And you live alone?" Kyler only nodded.
"Is that all, agents? I have a lot of things to do around the house today."
Spencer stood, followed by Cori. "For now." He handed Kyler a card. "Please give us a call if you remember anything that might help."
"I'll be sure to do that." As Spencer and Cori started out the door, Kyler's voice stopped Cori in her tracks. "You've grown up, little sister."
Cori turned to look at him. "So you do recognize me." She said.
Kyler walked up and ruffled her hair. "How could I forget my own baby sister?"
"I'm far from a baby, big brother." Cori said. "If you've been here this whole time, why haven't you visited Mom? She misses you."
"I left home to make a life of my own. I don't need Mom and I certainly don't need my smart aleck sister. Now, get out." His attitude had changed so fast, Cori was surprised, but turned and followed Spencer out the door.
When she climbed into the front seat next to Spencer, the older agent turned his head to her. "Did he say anything else?"
"Just that he doesn't need me." Cori replied, looking out the window as Spencer turned on the car and drove away.
So, how was this? Cori has reconnected with her brother, but he wants nothing to do with her. I already have the culprit in mind but i'm struggling to reach that point.
Please, read and review!
