If you read the first third chapter, this might be a bit confusing. I've changed the beginning story (and a character). Vastly. For those of you that hadn't read the first third chapter, ignore this authors note.
And here, ladies and gentlemen, is Fletcher's POV.
Enjoy.
Am I still a hero if the only person I save is myself?
There were hordes of people. Masses of them. All trained fighters, hunters, thieves, heroes, ready to protect for the greater good. I stood there for a while, watching. Someone eventually noticed that I was acting different than the rest.
Of course, they didn't understand why. It's up to me to let them know. And I do.
"What if I told you that all the worlds were dead?" My voice rings out unnaturally.
"What if I told you that you would be dead too, unless I brought you here?"
They're all crowding around know, quieting to hear me out. I smile for a second, then speak before it turns into a grimace.
"Of course, you don't know that. You don't know about the travelers, or endings, or anything, do you?
You're all heroes, the best of the best. Or at least, so they say. You come from different worlds, different time periods. Different universes, maybe. So do I."
I scan the crowd again. I notice two in the corner, a good head shorter than the rest.
I want to kick myself. I should have known at least one world would have a separate language from the commondary tongue. No matter. They'll get it in time.
"An apoctalyptic force has overtaken the outside, and this building is one of the few safe structures left. Therefore, this building is for the refugees."
Such as them.
" You've already met most of them." With this, all the 'peacekeepers' shift their guns over their shoulders. "They wear the suits for safety standards." All the refugees walk out, leaving the vast room to the ones they brought in.
"It doesn't explain why they had to be so rough," I hear someone mutter. The girl next to him retorts, "Well, maybe they knew you'd fight them, Four."
Other people are starting to relax. I can see it in their shoulders-they shift downwards ever so slightly, which is good. At least they might believe me, and we could get somewhere.
"I've ordered the south wing to hold you. You might want to get to know each other in the time being." I take a slight pause before saying what I know will cause dissent.
"You can't, literally cannot leave. You're never going back to the places you once knew." Heads perk up as the words sink in, eyes glare, and I can already smell the anger forming. It's happening too fast, but I can't slow it down. I don't have that ability.
"Remember," I plead.
But they don't listen. Someone manages to get up to the platform I stand against and tries to hit me. Their hand goes through air, and I can't help but feel somewhat disappointed as I shimmer and dissolve. I should have expected this. I did expect it. But it hurt all the same.
I peer out through a pocket in the glass of my room, wanting to see how they react to this final twist. I wasn't actually down there, of course, I would have been killed. Illusions were the best possible choice.
I noticed the two in the corner are starting to look a bit alarmed. I really should have remembered. I'll have a written form sent to their room, in their language, of course. Perhaps have a bit more information to make up for it.
I sit back into a chair, closing my eyes.
I'm doing it right. The phrase repeats in my mind again and again. Living in the future, growing on their stories of fame...one can hardly blame me for using it to their advantage and trying to do something right for once, can they?
I raise my head once more to see the havoc outside, then drop it to my chest with a thump. Apparently, they can.
Fletcher is an OC, BTW. If any of you were wondering.
Thank you for reading! I understand this might be a bit different, heheh...I'd been thinking a whole range of things about this story, and almost dropped it, but I liked the concept (which is why I wrote it in the first place). However, some things needed to be fixed if I was going to continue, and I thought it would be best to do it while there weren't that many readers. I hope that you'll still stick through with this story though.
Thanks for reading.
