Thank you everyone for the favourites and follows for my last chapter. I hope you like this latest chapter. Well things can't always go write between Matt and Abbey so this chapter will focus on that fight and its aftermath.
Abbey's POV
After lunch, I looked on as Matt went back to his office without bothering to talk to anyone. I figured I'd give him a little bit of space before going to talk to him again. I busied myself by doing the dishes to try to keep my mind off this news too. I kept stealing glances in the direction of the bunk area in case Matt would come through them again but with no luck. Once I was done with drying the dishes, I went in search of him even though I knew exactly where he was. I softly knocked on his door and waited for him to answer. After waiting a few minutes of waiting and no answer, I knowcked again but harder this time. It took another few minutes for him to answer me. He opened the door and sat back down at his desk without saying a word.
"Talk to me baby." I said barely above a whisper.
"There's nothing to talk about Abbey."
"Well there is if you need someone to evactuate to. You can talk to me about this, how you feel about it."
"There's nothing to talk about Abbey." He repeated.
"Matt. Ignoring this won't make it go away." I knew I was pushing my luck but the odds of this ending well if he bottled his feelings up were slim.
"I'm not ignoring anything. Heather is moving them away and that's it." He still hadn't faced me.
"Matt, look at me." I wanted a reaction out of him, any reaction.
"What do you want from me Abbey." His voice has raised considerably.
"What I don't want is for you to bottle up what you're feeling about the boys leaving town."
"They're leaving and there's nothing left to say about it."
"How about that you'll fight, that you'll do everything to keep these boys here, where they belong." I raised my voice to match his but didn't realize that this was being heard by everyone in the common room.
"Who are you to decide what's best for them Abbey?" He was screaming now. "You think you can do a better job than Heather?"
"That's not what I'm saying Matt but you love these boys and she shouldn't take them away from you." I had to scream too so he could hear me out.
"That's selfish of you don't you think? They've gone through enough in the past year and a half and they need to be with their mother, as a family. And Heather can decide to go whereever she wants with them and it's not our decision to make." He was yelling all of it at me and I was so mad that he wasn't willing to do something, anything to change Heather's mind on the matter. Not realizing that the door was open and that everyone could hear us screaming at each other, we kept going at it until i noticed Severide was standing there, listening to us screaming at each other.
"Don't let them go Matt." I screamed one last time before the paging system called us to a house fire. I knew this argument wasn't over by a long shot but we had to concentrate on getting the fire and tending to the potential victims. Brett didn't say a word to me on the way there and as soon as I hopped down from the rig, I locked eyes with Matt and his were still angry with her. Matt yelled his orders to the others of Truck and they got to work. We would usually exchange glances that would tell the other to be careful but he ignored me completely. I just stood next to the gurney and waited until everyone was out safely. We left with the first victim to Lakeshore and left the guys to finish what they started. Once our victim was finally checked out, we were left to fill in the paperwork.
"Are you ok?" Brett asked, leaning against the counter, looking at me do the paperwork.
"I'm ok." I answered vaguely.
"Abbey, don't tell me you're ok. Everyone heard that fight you had with Casey about the Darden boys."
"He was so mad at me Sylvie. I've never seen him mad like that before since I stepped foot in 51." I has stopped the writing of my report and I was just staring blankly at the ambulance entrance of the hospital. A few minutes later, the doors flew open and Dawson and Shay were wheeling a firefighter in.
"Firefighter, early thirties with left leg trapped under debries. Vitals are stable but pain is at ten on ten." It only took a few seconds and I saw it was Matt laying there. I quickly ran their way.
"Is he ok?" I was panicing but was stopped by Chief Boden's arms on my shoulder, stopping me from going farther.
"We don't know. Part of the cieling fell on his leg. Squad had to go in to get him." he directed me to the waiting room and I started my pacing, hoping for good news. When my pacing took me in the direction of the examination beds, the one where Matt was opened up and he was wheeled out again.
"Bring him to the OR." The doc called as he rushed behind them. I had a sudden urge to throw up the contents of my stomach but they stayed where they were. One by one, guys from Truck and Squad came to wait for news of Casey. I just kept pacing, thinking about our fight, hoping he was ok in the OR and that everything was going on without a hitch.
"Stop your pacing, you're making me nervous." Capp called out. I just glared at him and he went back to the paper he was holding. I cold see the minutes turning into hours and still therews no news of Matt's progress in the OR. It took another hour before someone in scrubs finally made an appearance.
"Are you here for Matthew Casey?"
"Yeah that's us." Boden said.
"Well Mr Casey is out of surgery and is being placed into a room. He had torn ligaments in his left leg so we had to go in and fix those. With proper physical therapy, he should be back to active duty in a few weeks. He's in room 314 if you want to go see him but only one at a time." He said before boden thanked him and turned away. I instinctively moved forward in an attempt to go to his room but I was stopped firmly by Severide.
"You're not going in there." He was angry at me too, I could tell. I reluctantly stepped away and he made his way to Matt's room. Boden had instructed everyone to go home because there wasn't anything they could do here tonight. I decided to go upstairs even if Kelly didn't want me to go see Matt but I wasn't going to be stopped from waiting in the waiting room for any kind of news. I grabbed a coffee at the machine and sat down on a chair to wait.
"Hey sweetie, how are you doing?" I was suprised to see Shay sit next to me.
"I thought for sure you'd be mad at me too for this. It's my fault he got hurt. Maybe I shouldn't be here after all, Kelly is right." I shlumped farther down in my chair as Dawson and Brett sat across from me.
"It isn't your fault Abbey. Gabby crouched in front of me and placed a hand on my knee. Matt is going to come out of this on top and you guys will work this out."
"Thanks Gabs." I smiled weakly at her.
"Go see him." Brett said. "Stay with him and when he wakes up, talk it out."
"I can't Brett, he hates me. He'll never want to see me."
"Just go." Shay added from the seat next to mine. I looked at all three of them and smiled.
"Thanks girls." I smiled at them once more and went to look for room 314 where Matt was recovering. The door to the room was closed and I slowly opened it to find Matt, still asleep on his bed and Kelly was sitting in a chair next to him. As soon as he saw it was me, he got up and came to meet me.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to see if he was awake."
"He isn't. You can go now." I had never really seen Kelly angry but that only demonstrated the friendship that existed between the two lieutenants.
"Please, I just want to sit with him a few minutes." I was almost pleading with him but his eyes told me I wouldn't win.
"Don't you think you've done enough for one day?" He growled.
"Kelly."
"No. There's no way i'm letting you go into that room." I finally abandoned my efforts and left.
"I'm sorry." I whispered and turned around, tears starting to form in my eyes. I walked back out of grabbed a cab back to the firehouse and then took my car back to my place. I threw my keys on the coffee table and dropped my coat on the armchair before I laid down on the couch. I brought my knees closer to my chest and finally let the tears that I had managed to keep at bay since I left the hospital fall. I must have fallen asleep from crying because when I woke up again, it was morning. I quickly showered and changed before grabbing a coffee to go and leaving for the hospital. I walked up to the third floor and went directly to Matt's room, that I found empty. I was about to go see at the nurses station for an update when I came face to face with Kelly.
"Hey." I whispered. When he didn't answer me, I continued. "Matt wasn't in his room." I simply stated.
"They took him for some tests. You should leave before he comes back."
"Listen Kelly. I'm sorry and I didn't mean for any of it."
"You know, it's your fault he got hurt. If you hadn't gotten into that argument, he never would have been distracted during that call."
"I'm sorry." He huffed in annoyance.
"He doesn't want to see you."
"Ok." I didn't have the strength to argue with him so I just left. I drove towards the diner and busied myself with placing the order that had just come in as I parked my truck in the back. I went home again after that and just turned off both my phone home and cell phone for the evening. I didn't have it in me to eat but I had steadily drank beer throughout the afternoon and part of the evening until there was a knock on the door. I looked through the peep hole and opened the door.
"Hey there buddy. Gabby told me what happened and since you weren't picking up either phone, I thought I'd come check up on you."
"I am fine." I slurred slightly.
"The fact that it's only eight and that you are drunk already doesn't make you fine Abbey." He walked into the house and I closed the door behind him.
"Well considering I made a complete ASS of myself and that Casey wants nothing to do with me, being drunk is the best thing I've done today." I took a swig of the beer I had in my hand.
Peter took the bottle from my hand and placed it on the counter. "You are going to go take a shower and we are going to watch a movie together, keep your mind of fof everything."
"Give it back to me." I whined.
"No way, now get going." He pushed me towards the stairs that I climbed to go take a hot shower, hoping that would take my mind off of the last 48 hours.
Matt's POV
I woke up post sergury in a room and Kelly was sitting in the chair next to me.
"What happened?" I asked groggily.
"Your left leg got stuck under some debris. Doc had to bring you in the OR to fix some torn ligaments."
"All I remember is fighting with Abbey and going into that building."
"Yeah, I heard the whole thing."
"Has she been here to see me?"
"Yes but I told her I wasn't letting her near you."
"Thanks. I'm not ready to talk to her yet."
"I've got your back."
The next morning
"Are you ready to get out of here?" Kelly asked first thing in the monring.
"Sine last night. When do they let me out of here?"
"After breakfast."
"Finally."
"You get to live with Shay and I until you're back on your feet."
"Thanks for everything Sev."
"Anytime." Breakfast came and went and the doc gave me my walking papers. I had to use crutched for a few days before being able to put some weight on my leg. Kelly drove us to his and Shay's place and we spent the rest of the day just hanging out.
Abbey's POV - The next morning
I woke up in my bed, not knowing how I had gotten there. All I remembered was downing all those beers and the hot shower before I started watching a movie with Peter and then nothing. I looked on the clock and it read 9 am. I took the Ibuprofen and the water that were left on my night stand and downed them, greateful for my best friend.
"Ready to go see Matt?" He asked from the counter when I walked in.
"What's the point? He probably won't want to see me."
"I'll stay with you I promise." He offered me some coffee.
"Ok." I took it and drank it quickly so we could leave. We drove to Lakeshore in silence and when we got there, I made my way to Matt's room only to find someone else instead of him. I went to the nurses station to find out what had happened. "Excuse me."
"What can I do for you miss?"
"There was a firefighter that was brought in two days ago with a leg injury, Matthew Casey. Was he moved to another room?"
"Let me check." She typed something in her computer and looked back up at me. "Mr Casey was discharged this morning. He left with one of his collegues."
"Thank you so much." I smiled at her and went back to see Mills waiting.
"How did it go?"
"He was discharged this morning. The nurse said he left with a collegue, it must have been Kelly. Bring me home please."
"Alright." I looked at my phone while we went back to his car to see if there were new messages but not so much as a missed call. Peter drove me back home and after some arguing, he left me alone. I debated a part of the morning whether I should call Matt or not until I just decided to park up the courage to make the call. I dialed his number by heart and let it ring until finally it went to voicemail.
You've reached Matthew Casey, please leave a message. "Hey Matt, it's me, Abbey. Uh well I just wanted to see how you were doing. I know you left with Severide this morning. I know you're mad at me but I just want to say that I'm sorry for everything. Please just call me back so we can talk. Please?" I pleaded before hanging up. I spent the day home hoping for my phone to ring and each time it rang I hope it was Matt but it never was. I went back to shift the next day and although the girls tried to talk to me, I went on calls and cooked and kept to myself the rest of the time. Kelly avoided me and when I tried to aproach him, he would leave or just give me the cold shoulder. The shift finished and it was the week-end. Kelly and Matt were scheduled to go to Lake Carroll with the Darden boys so I wouldn't get the change to talk to him until he came back. I got back home and called his phone again even if I knew he wouldn't answer.
You've reached Matthew Casey, please leave a message. God I missed hearing his voice. "Hey Matt, it's Abbey again. I don't mean to bug you but I know you're heading up to Lake Carroll for the week end with Kelly and the boys so I hope you have fun with them and that you have a great week-end.
a/n: So here is a new chapter. I didn't think I'd be able to come up with a new one that quickly but I'd like to thank Milady29 for brainstorming with me today and also to Chicago Fire Buddies for helping me keep the ideas flowing.
Next up: Matt and Kelly take the boys up to Lake Carroll for the week end and Abbey spends two miserable days at home, wondering what she should do to fix things with Matt
Thanks for the love and support and I hope you'll take a few minutes to leave a review.
