Abbey's POV

I got home later that evening after shift and dropped my duffle bag by the door. Met again with the emptiness of a home without Peter, I went directly for the shower. I turned it as hot as my body could handle it and stepped under it. I let the water run over my tense muscles and leaned my arms against the shower walls. I knew I had screwed things up with Matt by pushing him to fight for the boys and ultimately getting him in danger during our last call but I wanted to talk to him and fix it, fix us but the fact that he didn't answer my calls told me he either wasn't ready to forgive me or it was simply what would drive us apart. I stayed in the shower until the water was turning cold and stepped out. I dressed in my old, full of holes jeans and stumbled upon a CFD sweatshirt that Matt must have left behind an evening or another. I pulled it over my head and took in the smell of his cologne and closed my eyes, blinking away the tears that were starting to form. I went back downstairs, starving and ordered a pizza with a side of fries before grabbing a beer in the fridge and sitting on the couch. My mind would offer no silence as I replayed my argument with Matt over and over again until the delivery guy arrived. The tv was playing in the background but my attention wasn't on it. I ate the whole thing along with the fries and had a few beers after the first one. I called Shay's apartment hoping to see how Matt was doing but was not so lucky, getting Kelly on the other end. Then, I zapped aimlessly the channels on the television finding nothing so I decided instead to go to sleep. I traded my jeans for some old sweatpants and curled into a ball under my covers, pulling the sweatshirt to my nose, missing Matt more then ever. Sleep would unfortunately never come and my night would be spent tossing and turning.

Matt's POV

Later that evening, Kelly took me to my place so I could make my bag so we could leave to pick up the boys early the next morning. I clumsily walked up my stairs towards my bedroom so I could quickly pack so we could head back to Kelly's and Shay's to spend a quiet evening together before leaving for the week end. As I stuff clothes in my duffle, I hear my phone ding, signalling I had missed a call. I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Herrmann. I suspected that he wanted to give me a piece of his mind because of the argument I had with Abbey during our last shift.

"Is that Abbey again?" I had told him about the two phone calls and the voicemails but I hadn't listened to either one of them.

"No, it was Herrmann." I looked at my phone and contemplated listening to the two messages she sent me.

Kelly must have known what I was thinking because he got me out of my bubble. "Don't listen to the messages Casey."

"Maybe she's calling to say she's sorry." I knew Kelly was mad at her and a part of me was too but maybe wishing it to go away wasn't the solution. He left the room with a huff and I pressed on the button to listen to Abbey's messages.

"Hey Matt, it's me, Abbey. Uh well I just wanted to see how you were doing. I know you left with Severide this morning. I know you're mad at me but I just want to say that I'm sorry for everything. Please just call me back so we can talk. Please?" I pressed the save button and listened to the second one.

"Hey Matt, it's Abbey again. I don't mean to bug you but I know you're heading up to Lake Carroll for the week-end with Kelly and the boys so I hope you have fun with them and that you have a great week-end." I saved the second one and placed my phone back in my jean pocket before resuming my packing. It took me thirty minutes to finish getting my stuff together. I walked back down to meet up with Kelly but realized that he was gone. There was a message on the table saying he'd meet me back at his place when I was done. The point of this trip to my place was get my stuff and bring my truck back to his place. I drove back to his apartment, Abbey's messages replaying over and over in my mind.

Kelly's POV

Just the fact that Casey was considering listening to Abbey's messages was making me mad. They had that massive argument in his office about the Darden boys right before we got called to that structure fire. If it hadn't been for her and that argument, Matt would have had his head in the game instead of on their fight and maybe nothing would have happened to him. I left Casey's room in a huff and went downstairs. I scribbled on a piece of paper to come join my and Shay back at our place when he was done. I walked into my apartment and slammed the door before taking my coat off.

"What's got your panties in a bunch?" She asked from the kitchen.

"Abbey left Matt messages this morning and he was listening to them and I just left."

"I didn't think that Kelly Severide could be jealous of a girl." She chuckled.

"Not funny Shay. She's the reason his left leg is in a boot for the next couple of weeks." I growled. The fact that he was even considering making this easy for her was pissing me off.

"Maybe so but they have to figure this out, whether you like it or not."

"I don't like it one bit even though she was right about the Darden boys." I sat down on a stool and watched her work.

"Little brother will be just fine." She smiled at me. "So Milwaukee huh? Did yo talk to Heather at all?"

"No." I exhaled deeply. "When I heard the talk between Matt and Abbey I couldn't believe it. I'm not sure I can wrap my head around it."

"I feel for those kids, they've had one hell of a last year and a half. Matt took great care of them while Heather was gone." She pushed the salad aside and leaned against the counter, facing me.

"Yeah he did." I suddenly became lost in my thoughts but the phone ringing took me out of them. I didn't recognize the number but answered anyways. "Hello?"

Kelly, it's Abbey. Is Matt there by any chance? "You have balls calling here to talk to him." Well he hasn't returned my calls and I left two messages, I just wanted to know if he's ok. "Well maybe you should take him not calling you back as a hint. He's not here, just give him some space." Thank you Kelly. And I'm sorry I got him hurt. You're a great friend. And just like that she hung up. I slammed the phone hard on its stand and returned to sit on the stool I previously occupied.

"Abbey?"

"Yes." I said curtly and she just dropped the subject. As if on cue, the door to the apartment opened and Matt came walking in.

Matt's POV

The ride to Severide's was short and I opted to leave my stuff in my truck to avoid having to bring it back down in the morning. As I walked through the door, I had a feeling that they had been talking about Abbey right before. "Hey guys, what's up?"

"Shay is having a culinary moment, let's not spoil it." Shay swatted him and I chuckled.

"Anything you want to add to that Casey?" Shay pointed the knife she was using at me.

I rose my hands in surrender. "Nope, i'm all good here." I sat on the stool next to Kelly.

"Are you guys ready for the week-end?" She asked.

"Yup. The cabin is rented and it's by the lake. There's an outdoor fireplace and a boat so we can go finishing and there's a hiking trail."

"Not that you'll be walking all that much." Kelly warned.

"No walking, I promise. What's for diner Shay?"

"Steak and salad, nothing special. So Kelly, Are you going to tell Matt who called?" I could sense they had a difference of opinion on the subject by the look Kelly was giving Leslie but Shay wasn't budging."

"Who called?" I directed my question at Kelly.

"Abbey, she wanted to know how you're doing."

"Thanks." I had no intention of calling her but I was happy they didn't hide it from me. I got up and got stuff ready to set the table under Kelly's disapproving glances while Shay cooked the steaks. We ate supper making jokes and walking down memory lane. I took my medication and headed to the spare room to give Heather a call to make sure everything was ready for tomorrow. I dialled her number and waited for her to answer. "Hey Heather, how's it going?" Not bad, are you ready for tomorrow? "Yeah, everything is packed and in the truck. How are the boys holding up?" They can barely contain themselves, they can't wait. "Thanks for letting me do this Heather." I know how much the boys mean to you Matt and after everything you've done for them while I was gone, there was no way I would deny you this. "Well thanks anyways. I'll see you tomorrow." I hung up and got ready for bed. I fell asleep surprisingly fast considering Abbey was taking up all my thoughts and I woke up at six to get ready to pick up the boys. Shay was waiting for Kelly and I with some coffee that we could take for the ride. We said our goodbye's and each take our cars since we won't all fit in my truck. Heather's house isn't too far from the firehouse so we meet up there. I get out first and Kelly is behind me. I ring the doorbell and wait for someone to come answer it.

"Uncle Matt. Uncle Kelly." Ben hugs us both in turn.

"Hey Ben. Ready for some fun by the lake?" I laugh at his enthusiasm.

"What happened to your leg uncle Matt?"

"Got hurt in a fire but it'll be better soon. Where's your brother?"

"Brushing his teeth, he'll be right out." Heather appeared. "Matt, Kelly." She hugged us both too.

"Griffin is almost done, he'll be down in a few minutes.

"Cool, we're early, we should be there by lunch."

"Oh Matt, I never got a call from Abbey about diner. Are you guys still up to it?"

"Come on Ben, let's load your stuff in my trunk." Kelly took the youngest Darden away so I could talk with Heather.

"Is everything ok with Abbey?"

"Yeah, we got in a fight and we haven't talked since."

"I'm really sorry Matt. I hope you work it out." I was glad she didn't ask why because I'm not sure I would have been able to answer that question. Griffin came down the stairs and grabbed his coat from the railing.

"I'm ready uncle Matt."

"Good stuff. Go put your bag in with your brother's in Kelly's car." He quickly went to join them and shortly after, the three came back.

"You boys be good for your uncle Matt and uncle Kelly and I want you to have fun."

"We will mom." They said at the same time.

"You tell me if they've been anything other than on their best behaviour."

"I don't think we'll have a problem, right boys?" Kelly asked.

"No sir." They both said.

"Good then, let's get going." Both Kelly and I kissed Heather on the cheek and went to our cars under her watchful eye.

"Ok, who's with me?" Kelly asked the boys.

"I will." Ben jumped up and down.

"You two play nice." I warned them. "No funny business." I teased them.

"Sure thing DAD." Kelly chuckled as we climb into our respective vehicles. It was a two hour and a half drive so we were on our way it was around nine so we'd be able to settle in and then grab some lunch before planning the rest of the week-end.

Abbey's POV

During the whole night, I tried falling asleep but nothing was working. I tossed and looked at the clock then turned some and looked at the clock again during the whole night, each time having only an hour go by. When the sun came up, I resigned myself to get some sleep so I went into the shower and tried washing my mind clean. I wrapped around my body and tied my wet hair in a messy bun and noticed my eyes were slightly red and puffy from the crying and the lack of sleep. I went by the diner and helped Ingrid with the lunch service, steering clear of any form of questioning on my appearance. I poured coffee and cleared the tables since she didn't exactly need anymore help. She grabbed my arm as I was about to set the trey of dishes next to the sink.

"Abbey sweetie, are you ok?" Concern was evident in her voice.

"I'll be ok, thanks Ingrid." I was really trying to avoid a discussion because I knew it would come back to my moms ears even though I suspected Ingrid would tell her about today. I went to the store to get the missing parts so I could work on the car to distract myself until shift started again. I quickly changed into my old jeans and mechanic shirt before heading towards the garage to start working.

Matt's POV

We arrived at the cabin around eleven thirty. "Ok boys, let's get settled in." The two boys took their bags from Kelly's trunk and we all made our way towards the cabin. It was a two bedroom cabin with a small kitchen and living room with a tiny bathroom. "Don't fight over who get's what on the bunk bed. Griffin you take the top."

"Uncle Matt." Ben whined.

"No complaining Ben, you get the bottom." I said sternly. The second bedroom contained two double size beds and Kelly and I settled our things next to a bed and walked back outside with a beer in hand from the cooler they had packed the night before.

"This place is beautiful, thanks for inviting me to tag along." Kelly took a pull of his beer.

"Pleasure. Let's just have fun." I clanked my bottle with his and we both drank.

"Let's have fun."

a/n: Sorry this chapter is short compared to my other ones but I felt that if I put in the whole thing that it would be too long so coming up, we'll see the boys at the Lake and Abbey continue to struggle with Matt's radio silence.

I hope you liked it and you'll leave a review. I'm hoping to update soon so you guys won't wait too long until they come back.
