Disclaimer: I own nothing except for my imagination and Abbey.

Thank you everyone for the support that you guys keep showing to this story. Since I've got the end mapped out, I'm starting to feel sad about letting go of the first Chicago Fire Fic that I started writing on my home computer for my own enjoyment at first and finally put on here with a few friends help on twitter so I'd like to thank them for that. Ok so enough blubbering stuff, enjoy.

Abbey's POV

The moment Peter told me he was moving out, my ears started ringing. It's as if a bomb had been dropped right next to me and it's effects affected my hearing but in a sense, the news of him moving out was like a bomb. I had already spoken to Matt about having the feeling that this would happen but I never would have imagined that my heart would be hurting so much. I drove aimlessly, furiously wiping away the tears that didn't want to stop falling from my eyes. I knew it was childish to have walked out on him but my brain couldn't process anything beyond the news and I had to get out of there. As always, my very blurry state of mind took me to Matt's place, not really knowing where else to go. I put my truck in park and wiped one more time the tears that wouldn't stop coming before going up the stairs and gently knocking on his door. I knew he was probably be asleep, tired from our shift but I just waited. It took a few minutes before he opened the door barefoot, dressed in sweatpants and an old faded CFD t-shirt.

"I'm really sorry I woke you." I mumbled as he let me in.

"Hey it's ok. How did breakfast go?" He pulled me to the couch and just held me in his arms.

"Peter is moving out." I simply stated, my head buried in his chest.

"I was afraid that's what it was." he ran his hands through my hair, helping to calm me down.

"I walked out on him. I didn't know what else to do."

"It's going to be ok. The two of you will eventually talk it out and everything will be fine."

"I swear you always have the thing to say that makes everything better."

"Come to bed with me?" He kisses the top of my head. "Get some sleep and get a better idea when we get up?"

"Thanks." He pulled me up with him and he lead us back up the stairs and into his room. Once stripped to my tank and undies, Matt pulled me closer to him and we both fell asleep.

Mills's POV

The drive back to Gabby's place went by so quickly that it was like I had been on auto-pilot on my way there. I walked into her place and heard her humming in the kitchen, probably making breakfast for herself.

"Back already?" She asked as I walked through the kitchen door.

"Yeah." I offered.

"I take it didn't go too well?"

"She walked out."

"I'm sorry babe. Do you want something to eat?" She came to me and wrapped her arms around my waist.

"I'm not hungry thanks. You should have seen her Gabs, her heart was breaking into tiny pieces right in front of me."

"It's going to be ok. Give her a few days to take it all in and then talk to her. I'm sure she'll be happy for us."

"I hope so but you're right. I'll talk to her next shift and hopefully she'll feel better. "I untangled myself from her so she could eat. We talk about it some more before we went to bed for some sleep.

Matt's POV

As I pulled Abbey to my body, I waited to hear her breathing even out before closing my own eyes. I'm happy that Mills didn't tell me why she would need me because I'm not sure I would have been able to keep that kind of secret to myself for a whole shift. I woke up a few hours later but she was still sleeing. She was on her stomach had her right arm was wrapped around the pillow as if she was hugging it. She looked peaceful but the dark circles under her eyes were a dead givaway to how exhausted she really was. I propped myself up and watched her sleep. I removed a strand of hair that fell in her face and placed it behind her ear, trying not to wake her just yet. Since her arrival at 51, she had allowed me to see different sides of her personality. The one that probably made me fall in love with her was her loyalty to the people she loves and one of these people was Peter Mills. He had given me an insight into what kind of girl she was and on any given day, the two of them meshed so perfectly well together that anyone knew they were best of friends. Two friends that had shared everything life had thrown their way and this morning, life threw her a curveball that even though she knew was coming, she wasn't prepared for it to happen now. I gently ran my fingers along her shoulder blade, goosebumps forming under my touch. I smiled at the fact that just a single stroke of my fingers could have that effect on her.

"What are you smiling about?" Her voice full of sleep pulled me away from my thoughts.

"How beautiful you are and how lucky I am." A light blush crept into her cheeks.

"I'm the lucky one." She smiles up at me but makes no attempt to move from her position.

"Are you feeling better?" I rub lazy circles on her back.

"Yeah, a little bit. I feel so stupid for walking out on him."

"Don't worry about that, I know for a fact that he was worried about how you'd react to the news."

"He told you about it?" I could see hurt cross her features so I continued.

"No." I wanted her to know what had gone on at the house the day before. "He came to my office during shift yesterday saying that he needed me to be there for you but I refused to know why. I didn't want to know this huge secret and have to hide it from you but I promised him that I had your back."

"Thanks for always having it. I haven't exactly been miss strong since I started at 51."

"Life isn't always easy and you just have to deal with it as it comes and I know the two of you will be back on track in no time." I leaned down and gave her a soft kiss.

"Thanks." She kissed me back and leaned her head back down on the pillow. "So what time do we have to be at the Darden's for diner?"

"She said to come by around four. Are you still feeling up to it or you rather post-pone it to later?"

"NO." She exclaimed, moving her body up on both her elbows. "I don't want to miss a chance to see them before they leave for Millwaukee."

"Ok." I smiled at her. "So what's your plan?"

"Well I have no choice but to go home to change. I can't go there wearing what I have now."

"You know." I started. "I could move some things around so you could have a drawer and some space in the wardrobe here." I ran a hand on her shoulder and kissed it.

"I don't know Matt, that's a big step."

"One I'd be happy to take if that's ok with you."

"I'd love that." Her smile just lit up the room and I bent down to kiss her. I pulled her body to mine and ran my tongue against her lips, asking for access, which she granted. When air became an issue, we pulled apart slightly. Her eyes were closed and she licked her lips, smiling again. "I love you Matt." She finally opened her eyes and looked into mine, suddenly aware of the words that had slipped from her lips. Panic flashed through her eyes, not sure if her feelings were reciprocated.

"I don't know Abbey, that's a big step." I grinned from ear to ear and a smile finally appeared on her face.

"Don't." She was about to argue but I pressed my lips to hers again in a tender kiss.

"I love you too Abbey." I pressed my forehead to hers before kissing her again. I ran my hands under her tank top and pulled it over her head before she did the same to mine. My lips trailed kissed down her neck and I flipped us around before we made love until both of us were sent over the edge, feeling more happy than before. I rolled onto my side and pulled her into me, bringing the covers around our waist.

"That was." She took a few breaths before continuing. "Wow."

"You worded it right baby." We spent a lazy morning in bed before she made sandwiches for lunch, wearing nothing but my shirt and her underwear. I came behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. "Are you feeling better?" I questionned her regarding her living situation with Peter.

"Yes, thanks. Actually, would you mind picking me up at my place around 3:30? I think I need to fix this morning's mistake." She turned around in my arms to face me, wrapping her arms around my neck.

"That's my girl." I smiled at her before kissing her. We ate our sandwiches on the couch before she left to see Peter.

Abbey's POV

I kissed Matt one last time by my car before I drove off towards Gabby's place. I drove through the familiar streets of Chicago until I reached my destination fifteen minutes later. As I raised my hand to knock on the door, it opened and I came face to face with Gabby.

"Abbey." She smiled warmly.

"Hey." I was suddenly at a loss for words.

"Pete is in the living room." She patted my arm.

"Thank you." She smiled at me again and left. The living room was right off the entryway.

"Hey." I say quietly as he looks up hearing my voice.

"Abbey." He got up and walked to me.

"Sorry I ran out."

"It's ok." He pulled me into him for a hug.

"I've been apologizing a lot to you since joining 51." I laugh nervously.

"Hey, your journey at 51 hasn't been easy."

"Neither has your's and you're not a total mess."

"Yeah you're right." He laughs. "Come on the couch with me, I just started a movie."

"I can't stay that long but maybe we can talk."

"Sure." He pulled me by the hand and sat on the couch, putting his legs on the coffee table while I pulled them up to my chest and leaned into him.

"Sorry I over reacted this morning. I told Matt a few weeks back that I was sure you'd move in with Gabby once PT was over but I guess I wasn't ready to hear it this morning over breakfast."

"We talked a lot about it actually."

"Really?"

"Yeah we did. It took a long time for me to say yes and not because I didn't want to move in with her." He put his arm around my shoulder. "I just didn't want to leave you alone in that house."

"You do know I can take care of myself yeah?" I chuckled.

"I know but that house has so many memories and I was afraid of leaving you alone in there."

"Yeah. A lot of things happened in that house for sure but it's always been home so i'm ok with the memories. Most of them are great memories, far outweighing the bad ones."

"Yeah but there were pretty dark days too."

"Yeah but you pulled me out of those dark days Pete and being at 51 with family also helped take some weight from my heart that's been there since my dad passed. And Matt helps a lot, he spends a lot of time with me there since we've come out as a couple."

"I'm happy you have him, he's a great guy."

"Yeah he is and I love him so it makes all the pain go away."

"Love huh?" He bumped his shoulder to mine.

"Uh huh." I smiled. "I told him this morning."

"And did he say it back?" This was his big brother side coming out.

"Yes he did, thanks for looking out." I presented him my fist that he bumped his again.

"Anytime. You know I always have your back and that's not going to change now that I won't live with you anymore."

"Yeah I know. So when are you moving out?"

"A little less than two weeks."

"Ok. Let me help you?"

"Sure." He chuckled. "Not that I'll be moving that many things though. Gabby has pretty much everything here."

"Well we need to bring some of your things over so it at least looks like you're living here." I poked him in the side.

"Don't worry we will." I looked at the clock and it read 2:30.

"Damn I have to go get ready."

"What's your plans for tonight?"

"Matt and I are having diner at Heather's place before they leave in little less than two weeks."

"Oh yeah, I remember you saying something about that."

"I better go get ready so I don't keep Matt waiting when he picks me up." I got up from the couch and Pete followed me to the front door.

"It's going to be ok." He said with one last hug before I left.

"I know." I gave him an extra squeeze and left. I drove back to the house and quickly went into the shower to remove the excess of last shift and change into comething more presentable. I put on a pair of boyfriend jeans with a teal coloured, spagetthi strapped chiffon top that I paired with black flats and a black cardigan, braiding my hair to the side. I finished getting ready just as there was a knock on my door and Matt came in.

"Hey baby, are you ready to go?" He walked in to the main powder room where I was almost done.

"Yes, just let me finish applying my make-up and we're good to go." I only put some mascara and gloss and I was done. "I'm good to go." I smiled, turning to face him.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you." I blushed before I headed out the door and he closed it behind me, locking it with my keys before he went to open the door to his truck for me.

"How did it go with Mills?" He kept his eyes on the road at he talked.

"All fixed. He's moving in a little less than two weeks."

"Little less than two weeks, pretty much around the time Heather and the boys will leave."

"People always leave." I took a look out the window and Matt offered my leg a squeeze.

"It's going to be alright." He reassures me.

"I know." I turn to look back at him and smile. We drove the rest of the way in comfortable silence. He parked next to her car and we walked up and rang the doorbell. Matt leaned towards me and kissed me, his arms around my waist, just as Heather opened the door.

"Hey." She greeted us with a mischievious smile.

"Heather." Matt kissed her cheek as I blushed.

"Hey." I smiled at her once I recovered from the embarrassment.

"Come on in." She gestured and we made our way through the door.

"Uncle Matt, Abbey." The boys came boucning from upstairs, engulfing us in a hug.

"Hey guys, I've missed you." I pulled Griffin to me so I have both boys in a hug. "Matt tells me you guys had fun at the lake."

"Yeah. We went fishing, swimming." Griffin started.

"And we made s'mores." Ben yelled making me laugh before he went to hug Matt.

"I hear I have you to thank." Griffin knew what I was talking about. I still had my arm around his shoulder as we walked further in the house.

"I knew something was wrong. I like you Abbey and I like uncle Matt so I just wanted the two of you to be together."

"Looks like the pep-talk worked." I exchanged a look with Matt and he winked at me, making me smile. "So what about you? Are you excited about the move?"

"Excited might not be the right word." He rolled his eyes.

"Griffin Darden." Heather reprimanded him. Ben on the other hand was unfazed by all the move talk.

"I'm not going to lie mom." He huffed.

"It's ok, change is hard but I know you'll make some new friends there quickly." I rubbed his back, moving into the living room.

"What about school? Did you guys go visit any?" Matt asked as he sat down next to Ben on the couch.

"Yeah, they're both enrolled." Heather handed us some drinks.

"Tell you what boys. How about one last game of Rizk before you leave?" I smiled at both boys as they stood up excited.

"I'll go get the game." griffin left the room and returned a few minutes later and we get it up on the living room table under the watchfull eye of Matt and Heather.

"Thank you." Heather mouthed and I smiled at her because I knew that if talk of moving was still brought up that the evening wouldn't end too well. I went back to the boys and I barely noticed when Matt and Heather left the room.

Matt's POV

We left the three in the living room to play and we made our way to the kitchen so Heather could finish making diner.

"She's great Matt." Heather busied herself in the kitchen.

"She is." I took a sip of my beer and looked at her playing with the boys.

"And she's great with the boys. Andy would be happy for you two."

"And he'd be proud of the three of you."

"Thank you again, for taking care of them while I was in prison. I'll be forever grateful to you for that."

"I would do it again in a heartbeat Heather and you would have done the same if the roles had been reversed."

"I know but still, thank you." I kept stealing glances in the living room where Abbey was laughing with the boys. "You love her don't you?"

"Yes." I smiled at her. "I never thought I would after Hallie but then she came along and I learned to love again."

"Andy would definitely have liked her. He was the happiest when you and Kelly were happy too.

"I see him in the boys and I miss him."

"The older they get the more I see him." Heather smiled sadly. "That's why I have to move us. I just hope you're not mad at me for taking them away."

"I'm not mad at you and I'll miss the three of you but I understand."

"And you know that we're only a few hours away by car. You can come see them whenever you want and we'll come visit too."

"I'll hold you up to that." I laughed this time. I would miss them but it was all going to be ok.

"Alright, diner is ready." Heather called the boys and Abbey to the table.

"Five more minutes mom." Ben pleaded.

"Come on bud." Abbey put her things down. "If your mom wants, we can try finishing it after diner."

"Ok." He pouted and got up, making all three of us laugh.

"I've never seen anyone so sad to step away from a game of Rizk." Abbey ruffled his hair.

"Andy loved playing with them. He would set the game up and they'd play every night. It wasn't put away until the same was over. It took weeks sometimes."

"It is a long and complicated game." Abbey agreed.

"Where did you learn the game?"

"My dad too. He loved it and thought it was a good game to help with focus and strategizing."

"So what's your story?" Heather was trying to get some information out of her as she served everyone some food.

"She's a great paramedic." I smiled at her.

"He's exagerating." I poured us all a glass of wine while she tried to downplay it.

"So how did you get your start at 51?"

"Well I spoke with chief Boden because I needed an internship. I'm only recently certified."

"But why 51?" I exchanged a glance with Abbey to make sure she was ok but she just smiled at me.

"My dad was chief of 51 before he passed away so I know chief Boden since I was little. He made a few calls and we became the first house in chicago to have two ambos. It's challanging but we make it work."

"I'm sorry to hear about your father's passing."

"Thanks but everyone at 51 is great and it's better now."

"She's been doing great."

"Says the guy who has to pick up the pieces every other day." She chuckled.

"You guys are great together. I'm happy Matt found someone like you."

"Yeah but the truth is, I'm the lucky one. Plus, I get to have these two characters in my life." She poked Griffin in the ribs and smiled at Ben, making Heather laugh in return. We spent the rest of the diner talking and making jokes with the boys until Abbey helped Heather with the dishes and we reset the game as it was so they could keep playing a little bit. Ben ended up winning with a little bit of help from me and the boys were more than reluctant to go to bed after that but with a little bit of proding from Heather and a hand from Abbey, they were in bed.

"You are really great with them Abbey."

"They're great kids Heather." They hugged and Heather whispered something in Abbey's ear.

"I will." She replied. I'd have to ask her about it later.

I was next in line for a hug and a kiss to my cheek. "Don't let this one go."

"I won't I promise." I smiled at her and then she waved at us as my truck left the curb. We went back to Abbey's place for the evening and we popped in a movie and had some pop corn. "so what did Heather say to you?"

"Aren't you the curious one." She giggled.

"What? I only heard your reply so I want to know what she said."

"Well if you have to." She moved around to straddle my hips. "She said to take care of you." She ran her fingers in my hair, making me close my eyes for a second. She rested her right hand on my cheek and gave me a tender kiss, one I returned.

"And I'm pretty sure she asked you something too." We were staring in each other's eyes.

"She said not to let you go." Both our breathing was getting thicker.

"And are you?" She offered me another kiss as I placed my hands on her back now.

"No." I whispered as her lips left mine but I instantly took hers back in a frenzier kiss. We ended up tangled in a mess of arms, legs and hands that couldn't get enough of the other's body. We made out for what seemed like hours before we moved it to her bedroom. Today had started badly but this was the best way to finish it, in bed with the girl I love.

a/n: First, those of you who ever wondered about Hallie in this story, I just want to make it clear that I didn't kill her off but she and Matt just didn't want the same things (kids) so they parted ways. (It was in the storyline in the first chapters)

Second, as always Gabby and Matt give good advice and Abbey and Peter talk like they usually do because letting it simmer never helps them. We also see a little bit of insight on how the boys are taking the move to Milwaukee but they also have a great time with the adults.

Next up: Mills packs to move out and the Darden's leave. 51 says goodbye to a part of the family when they leave and Abbey learns to live on her own in her house.

I really hope you liked this chapter and you'll take a few minutes to type a review. I always love to read what you guys think of it.
