YAY! Next Chapter is up. And the following two have already been written so they'll both be up this week as well. I hope you all are going to love the next few chapters. They were a blast to write. :)
Thank you for everyone who reviewed. It means so much to me. It motivated me enough to write the next ten thousand words for the story! So excited on what you guys think about it
Chloe's POV
Almost a week had past with no major incidents. It was so amazing that it felt like a dream. Kai was almost fully healed, so we were discussing plans on what was going to happen next. Alek and Jasmine were in favor of just letting him leave the town without any protection, claiming that we had done enough for him already. I disagreed though. There would be no way in knowing if he made it home okay if we didn't follow along with him to make sure no Mai would attack him.
What surprised me most was that Mimi agreed with me. Well, not completely because she didn't care if he was okay; she just wanted to make sure that he didn't start a big conflict between us and them. But she did think we should take him home ourselves. It wasn't the best of agreements, but it was a start.
What was the best was that Alek and I had gone out three times this week. Monday night for his game, then again on Wednesday and Thursday night, which was last night. Today we decided to go out again after we practiced first. It was surprising how much we seemed to go out, but it was also great. He was showing a different side to him- still cocky, but he had such a sweet side as well.
One night we had gone for Thai food and then to the movies. Another night we went bowling where we both used our Mai skills to get a score above 220. Though, he did beat me by thirty points, and loved to rub that in my face. The tonight we just went over to his place and watched a movie while ordering pizza. Jasmine was luckily gone, something that I assumed Alek made sure of, and then Valentina was on a business trip again.
The only thing that ruined all of these dates was that I saw Mimi watching us for the first and the third one, which probably means that she was at the second one as well. I didn't have the courage to ask Alek why he had another Mai watching us without telling me. He did say that he was going to increase protection when Kai was around, so he probably didn't feel like he needed to explain himself with me. And asking if we could remove the extra protection would just spark another fight between us. It would also be a fight that I would lose.
While I knew Mimi was there for my protection, I couldn't help but think how weird it was to have my boyfriends ex on the dates with us. How did she feel about seeing us together?
These thoughts wouldn't stop, and it was making it hard to fall asleep. I had gotten back from Alek's an hour ago, but wasn't asleep yet. That's when I heard his heartbeat on the roof, and it slowly turned into a lullaby as I finally fell asleep.
A blindfold covered my eyes, making it impossible for me to see anything and my hands were bound behind me. I felt myself being shoved to the ground by someone. "Let me go!" I tried to say with as much authority and power as possible, but it sounded weak. There wasn't anything I could do.
"Chloe? Are you alright?" I heard Alek's voice in front of me. Before I could answer, the blindfold was ripped off, and I could see again. We were in a cave, or tunnels or something along those lines. Alek, Amy and Paul were all in front of me, with Jackals surrounding us all. Amy and Paul weren't tied up like Alek and I were, but I guess they weren't seen as much of a threat as we look. Blood trickled down Alek's face, and a bruise was starting to form on his cheek.
Was I okay? Physically, yes, though probably not for long. But we were trapped by a lot of Jackals. How were we going to get out of here? There were too many of them to fight off. Amy and Paul wouldn't be too much help, and being bound wasn't going to help the situation. "What do you want from us?" I tried asking the Jackal who wasn't closet to me, but he didn't respond. When I tried to stand up, I got shoved again to the ground.
"Isn't that an obvious question?" A jackal started to walk towards us. He was bigger than the rest of them, with more scars as well. Kai was a few steps behind him, and I couldn't figure out why he would betray us like this. "You're the Uniter. Their savior. We couldn't allow you to live and save your pathetic race."
"Then let them go," I said, without thinking, but didn't mean it any less. "Kill me, let them go. They have nothing to do with this."
"Chloe!" I heard Alek protest behind me, but I forced myself to ignore him.
"It's not that simple," The head Jackal continued. "We would've left them behind, but they all tried to stop us from taking you. They would protect you no matter what, and no doubt that they would revenge your death as well. They will die along with you tonight. Really too bad so many have to die." It didn't look as if the Jackals had a problem with what they were about to do. Some of them even looked excited.
"Kai," I begged. "Don't let them do this. Please, don't hurt them." Though Kai looked conflicted, he didn't say anything. "I know we didn't get to know each other in the best terms, but I stopped them, didn't I? I made sure you were looked after, treated in the right way." The conflicted look went away quickly and he let out a blood chilling laugh.
"Use that brain of yours, Uniter! How stupid can you possible be? This was all planned from the start." The look he gave us made me want to curl up into a ball, but I didn't want to show weakness. "We heard of your surprising amount of sympathy for others, and needed to test it out for ourselves. Just to test how little preservation instincts you really had. I just had the honor to be the one to go." His ice cold smile was nothing compared to the hard look in his eyes. Now that he turned against us, I had no plan to get us out of this. "You're finished Uniter, and I got the honor of taking your first life for my dedication." He struck my head, causing me to fall to the ground where he preceded to kick me over and over.
"Get the hell away from her!" I heard Alek scream in anger then saw him tackle Kai to the ground.
"Alek, don't," My voice was weak, and too soft to hear. I tried to get up to help him, but it was pointless. By the time I had gotten to my feet, Alek was being restrained by three Jackals.
"Now that, was foolish." Kai laughed before he spit out blood from his mouth. "We'll make sure you pay for that, after Chloe here is gone." He walked on over to me slowly, while I prepared to fight. There was no way I was going to let Alek die, or Amy or Paul. "There are so many ways to kill you, what way should be first? I guess it's a good thing you have eight more lives to go. That gives us lots of choices." Our fight didn't last long, before he had his hands around my neck, choking me.
"Chloe!" Amy cried, and then I heard a thump. She was hit hard enough to be thrown on the ground. I unsheathed my claws and tried to hit his face with them, but he was too far away. Instead, I settled for clawing at the hands around my neck.
"You *****" I heard him scream when I made contact. Blood was rushing down his arms now, dripping on the ground. But he didn't lose his grip around my neck. Instead, his grip got tighter. The feeling of suffocation was awful. Just as bad as drowning.
I kept trying to claw at his hands but it didn't make any difference. He was determined to end me, so he was ignoring the pain. Or, he had an incredible pain tolerance. I could hear Alek screaming: at me, at them. He was trying to escape his guards to get to me, but it sounded like he wasn't even close. It sounded like Amy and Paul were sobbing, but they were further away than Alek. Soon, dark dots clouded my vision, and I started to get dizzy. Noise seemed to fade, and the only thing I could hear was my frantic heartbeat. Then, the world completely faded.
I shot up in my bed, gasping for air. It was another dream. But it felt just as real as the other ones. "Chloe?" I heard Alek ask beside me. He was sitting on the bed, with a worried look on his face. "Hey, it was just a dream." His soft voice whispered when his hand went to cup my face, wiping away the tears that were dripping.
"I'm okay," I didn't know who I was trying to convince; him or me.
"Liar," I saw his eyes glance at the clock. "Do you want to talk about it? How about we go take a walk? It's still a really early, but it might help clear your mind." I shook my head quickly. There was no way I would tell Alek about the dream. It might only be a dream, but it shows that somewhere in my subconscious that I worry about the Jackals, about Kai. About my safety.
He would do anything to make sure I felt safe no matter what. Kai would be thrown out so quickly without our help getting back home. In this case, I don't want Kai to suffer because I've been on edge since my last attack.
Besides, it's just a dream.
Alek's POV
Watching Chloe have those nightmares is painful. Not being able to help is worse. There was nothing I could do to stop them, or help her during them. I couldn't even tell her the truth about them because of Valentina. She was all by herself with these, and couldn't know the truth about them. Though, maybe that was for the best. If knew the truth about the dreams, how they were a prediction of her death, she would be terrified.
We've been walking around for around an hour, but she still hasn't told me what the dream is about. Actually, Chloe hasn't really said anything this whole time. Even when I asked her some questions, she kept her answers really short- if she even answered them at all.
"How about we train now instead of later?" Chloe asked, interrupting my thoughts. "That way we can just relax tonight after your game."
"It's only three. You can try to go back to bed if you want." I told her. She hadn't been getting enough sleep already because of training, and the nightmare is only going to make it worse. She had only slept for two hours tonight. "I could join you. Help you relax."
"No, I'm alright." She said softly, but avoided my eyes. She hadn't even reacted to my suggestion when she normally lectured me on my jokes. That was a bad sign.
"Hey," I also spoke softly, and pulled lifted her chin so her eyes met mine. "You don't need to do that. You don't have to put on a false face to hide whatever you're feeling."
"I'm not." She put on a smile, but it was forced. It was clear Chloe was lying.
"You know you can talk to me about anything, right? I'm always here for you." Just, tell me the dream, please. I begged silently. It was the only way I could make sure I could protect her. Even I couldn't if I didn't know what the threat was.
"I know that, but I'm fine. Besides, we can focus on having fun tonight if we do the training right now."
"You can't get enough time with me, can you?" I joked while forcing a smile on my face. She would be able to tell something was wrong if I kept acting so serious. "I guess I understand why. I'm pretty awesome. If I were you, I would hang out with me a lot too." Chloe's face lit up a little, but was still pretty worried.
"Mimi's nickname for you CB perfectly fits."
"Ouch, that hurts. Really."
"If you stop being so cocky, then we couldn't call you CB."
"You know you love my cockiness. It's part of my charm." I didn't give her a chance to answer before I pulled her into a kiss and closed my eyes. My hands were placed on her hips as I pulled her in. When she didn't respond to the kiss, I deepened it. I pushed her against the tree that was behind her. Her beating chest thudded against mine as we were so close. Chloe tangled her hands in my hair, finally reacting to the kiss. I didn't know what kept her from reacting for those few moments- the dream or the surprise of the kiss.
I pushed my tongue towards her lips, asking for permission to enter. She opened her mouth slightly, but didn't fight for dominance. I focused on the sound of her heartbeat. Thumping faster than normal. When she moved her hands to rest on my chest, I thought she wanted to push me away, so I started to pull away from her and dropped my hands from her waist. But she grabbed onto my shirt, preventing me from pulling away any further, then pulled me closer to her so I put my hands back to where they were before.
Suddenly, my phone rang loudly and ruined the moment. I quickly pulled away from her and pulled out my phone. We were both breathing heavily, and her cheeks were pink. It was the cutest thing I think I had ever seen. After waiting for a moment for my breathing to become more normal, I answered the phone. "WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?" Mimi shouted very loudly. That quickly ruined the moment.
"What do you mean where am I? I-" I wasn't given the chance to finish.
"I'm at Chloe's house and both of you are gone! The only thing that's here is the Jackal. It's four in the morning, where on earth would you two go without telling me?!" There was no point in putting it on speakerphone for Chloe to hear. Mimi was talking loud enough for a normal human to be able to hear from where Chloe was standing.
"Relax, we're both fine. Nothing would've happened to her when I'm with her. Chloe and I just went out for a walk. "
"Why would you go on a walk this early?" Chloe was shaking her head frantically, begging me not to tell Mimi about her nightmare. Mimi had to be told about Chloe being in danger, but I didn't want to upset Chloe right now.
"She couldn't sleep, and I thought that a walk would erase some of this extra energy that was preventing her from sleeping." I lied, but decided it was worth it once I saw Chloe relax slightly at my words.
"Without more protection? You know that we want at least two people watching her at all times!" I saw Chloe raise her eyebrows at that. I hadn't gotten around to telling her how much more protection she was getting since Kai came.
"She's fine, okay?" I heard Mimi sigh in annoyance, and frustration.
"Just, come back now before something happens."
"We were going to train this morning before school."
"That's something you really need to share with me before you go ahead and do it Alek. Tell me where you are, and I'll come meet you." I quickly told her where we were and hung up the phone.
"I guess we're going to have some company during training." Chloe said softly while still leaning against the tree. After giving her a small smile, I leaned over and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Yeah, but it was nice when it lasted, right?" She smiled, and this time, it was almost believable, almost real. But it didn't quite reach her eyes. I could tell that she was more relaxed then before, but the dream had freaked her out more that I thought. If she reacted this much to a dream, how would she react when she found out the dreams were predictions?
Please review :) This chapter was sadly a little less exciting, but it's building for an amazing next two chapters.
