A/N: Hello Strangers! I'm sure you all know the drill by now - all mistakes are mine because I hate rereading my own stuff and don't like using betas. All characters are Stephenie Meyers' because she's a genius and we all love her. Any similarities between my story and anyone else's are unintentional, I just like to write :)
When I finally got home I was exhausted and my hand throbbed. I dropped my keys on the little table by the door and the alarm system greeted me. "Yeah, yeah," I grumbled and flipped on the light switch. I almost died when I saw Edward sitting on my couch waiting for me. His fingers tapping on his knee impatiently, dressed in his customary dark suit, he looked like a shadow at first glance. "Jesus Christ, you scared the shit out of me!"
"I've been waiting for you, something wrong with your phone?" Shit. I'd forgotten to check my messages after I left the hospital, my phone was probably dead in the bottom of my purse by now.
"I'm sorry, it's been a really rough day and I forgot—"
"What happened to your hand," his words were harsh but his body was no longer angry as he rushed towards me to examine my casted hand. Double shit.
"Nothing, it was just an accident."
He looked at me speculatively and then back at my hand. "Did someone do this to you?"
I couldn't help but giggle. "No, I did it to myself." He stared at me and I bit my lip again, then I told him exactly how I'd done it to myself. To say that Edward was pissed may be a bit of an understatement.
"I'll kill him," he growled, his eyes ravenous. Edward ran the backs of his fingers down the side of my face adoringly, his touch conflicting the harshness of his words.
"That won't be necessary, I don't think Jacob will ever try anything like that again. Rose is going to have a conniption when she finds out." I was trying to ease his tension but his eyes were still hard, almost black, with rage. Change of subject, that's what we needed. "I met you dad," I told him and he looked surprised; I took the opportunity to separate myself from him and walk into the kitchen for a bottle of water.
"My dad," he asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.
I nodded as I took a drink and replaced the cap. "I forgot he worked there, didn't realize he was an E.R. doctor."
"He's not, probably filling in or something. Did you tell him who you are?" His body language was unreadable at this point and it made me uncomfortable.
I shook my head and started worrying my lip between my teeth. He never had said whether he wanted me to meet his mother or not, and now he was worried about me meeting his father? Edward had told me he loved me, told me that I was good for him, but maybe… not good enough for him? "I'm going to change," I mumbled and headed back to my bedroom, shutting the door behind me like it would protect my feelings.
I changed into a pair of sleep shorts and a tank top, with some difficulty, and awkwardly pulled my hair into a messy pony tail. Not quite ready to go back out and face Edward, I dug my phone out of the bottom of my purse and checked it. 3 missed calls, 1 voicemail, and 6 text messages. Holy shit.
One missed call and a text message from Rose.
Rose: OMG Bella! Tonight was amazing, thank you so much for covering the shop for me. Can't wait to talk to you tomorrow and tell you all about it! Am I gushing? I don't gush. I'm gushing. I was calling to see if I should take him back to my apartment but since you didn't answer, and failed to call me back, I will take your silence as approval! Call you in the morning! 3 Rose
I smiled at her enthusiasm and clicked on Alice's name with the glowing number 2 beside it.
Alice: Hey, mom's planning a shower for me at the house this weekend and wants you and Rose to come. Didn't really seem like Rose's thing so I wanted to ask you before I invited her. It's co-ed, nothing too fancy, but you are required to come. ;) Call me tomorrow for details.
Alice: Okay when you didn't text back I assumed your phone was dead but Edward just called me freaking out. Where are you? Are you okay? Please text or call to let me know you're alive. It's not good for pregnant bitches to worry!
Baby shower? The thought of going to Edward's house made me nauseous. I didn't know if Rose would be game or not; she really liked Alice though, so maybe. There would need to be alcohol though, I was sure. Did Edward know about the shower? How did he feel about me going to his family home and meeting everyone?
Me: Hey Al, I'm alive and with your brother at my apartment. Sorry to worry you, forgot my phone was on silent. Talk tomorrow. :)
The two remaining calls, the voicemail, and three text messages were all from Edward. I decided on to read the texts first.
Edward: Hello Beautiful, I miss you. Mind if I come over?
Edward: Kind of freaking out over here Bells, is everything okay?
Edward: Isabella, I've called the shop and no one answered. I'm coming over. Please text me back and let me know if you're okay. Did I do something? If you're mad at me I won't come, I just need to know you're okay.
My heart hurt a little bit and I played his voicemail. "Bella, where the hell are you? I'm at your apartment and you're not here. I'm really freaking out. Please baby, call me. I love you." A lone tear slid down my cheek and I wiped it away, feeling stupid for being emotional but the panic in his voice was heart wrenching. Movement in the corner of my eye startled me and I looked up to see Edward leaning against the door frame, watching me; I hadn't heard him come in.
"You sounded really scared," I told him and he didn't respond. I looked back at my phone, turning up the ringer dramatically, and placed it on my bedside table. The corner of his mouth twitched with amusement before he walked towards me and pulled me to my feet. Edward wrapped his arms around me tightly, burying his face in my neck and inhaling deeply. He exhaled and I felt the tension leave his body as he relaxed into me.
"I love you so much Bella, it terrifies me. But the thought of something happening to you, terrifies me even more. When I didn't hear from you I panicked."
I kissed his shoulder and wrapped my arms around his waist; well… as best I could. "I'm sorry, I knew you'd be furious when you heard about Jacob so I didn't call to tell you. Once I got to the hospital I forgot about everything except just getting home, I was so tired and just ready for the night to be over."
Edward turned his face and kissed my cheek, then my neck, my shoulder, and moved to my lips. "Furious is an understatement," he whispered and kissed me again. I couldn't help but smile as I returned his kiss and then pulled him onto the bed. "I thought you were tired, Miss Swan," he teased and I grinned up at him.
"For you, Mr. Cullen, I'm never too tired."
