A/N: oh the love :)
Rosalie and I decided not to tell Esme about the babies until after Alice gave birth. It would give her time to focus on her own daughter and her first grandchild properly. Alice disagreed, and as the day got closer I could see why. Esme was crazy.
Alice's due date was now a week away and Esme had practically moved herself in to their place in anticipation. Which also meant she could bug... I mean visit... Edward and I whenever she wanted.
"Bella I just love what you've done with this space. But do you know what would look even better, is if you..." I gripped the whisk I was using to stir my brownie batter tighter and tried to ignore her umpteenth suggestion about how would better use the space. In the past several weeks I had grown to truly love Esme Cullen, but there was only so much a woman could take. If that baby didn't make an appearance soon I might be forced to reach in their myself and yank it out.
"Esme," I started when suddenly Alice spoke up from the couch.
"Mommy," she called her, her voice a strange, concerned tone that I'd never heard before. I dropped the bowl onto the counter and followed Esme into the living room. "I think my water broke." Alice sat on the couch, her black leggings and the couch beneath her soaked, and her eyes quickly filling with tears.
Esme rode with Alice to the hospital while I locked up the apartment and called everyone. Rosalie and Emmett were on their way back from a weekend in Connecticut but they were still 45 minutes away. Jasper and Edward were just at the office, thankfully, so they agreed to meet me there. Knowing Jasper, they'd probably beat me.
"Hello beautiful," Edward greeted me when I walked into the waiting room twenty minutes later. He was sitting in one of the plastic chairs, looking completely out of place in his Versace suit, and playing with his phone.
"How is she," I asked automatically and he patted the empty seat beside him.
"I saw mom for a second when we got here. Contractions started on the way to the hospital and the Doctor said that's a good sign for a quick delivery," he informed me, placing a hand on my knee as I got comfortable beside him.
"Did you get to see her?"
"For a second," he shrugged. "They had to check her or something; I didn't know what that meant and decided I didn't want to. Figured I'd wait out here for a while." That made me laugh and he kissed me softly, "can't believe they're going to leave here parents."
"Can't believe we're going to leave here parents."
"Well, not anytime soon," he commented and I nodded in agreement. I hadn't been in to see my Doctor yet, though Rosalie had already seen hers, and I knew it made Edward anxious. The things I read online said they couldn't see anything until 8 weeks anyways so I didn't really see a point. We didn't know exactly how far along I was but I figured we could wait a few more weeks.
Despite my earlier thoughts that Edward should speak with Carlisle to calm his baby nerves, I wasn't comfortable doing the same for myself. My own father and I had been close, but never girl-business close and it felt weird to ask my boyfriend's father for womanly advice. I could wait a couple more weeks to ask my Doctor all the questions I needed to.
"Hello," Carlisle smiled when he came looking for us a few minutes later. "It's good to see some friendly faces."
"Friendly," I asked, confused.
Carlisle nodded, "Alice never did do anything halfway. She's coming along pretty well, should be a quick delivery; her contractions are in full swing now."
"Ouch," I grimaced sympathetically, rubbing my stomach absently as I tried to imagine the pain. My only experience with this was movies; I sort of expected it to be a while before the pain started.
"How's our other little one doing," he asked conversationally as he claimed the seat on the other side of Edward.
"Okay, I guess," I shrugged. "I'm still not entirely convinced there's anything in there."
"You haven't been to the Doctor yet," Carlisle asked.
To which Edward responded when an enthusiastic, "thank you!"
I rolled my eyes, "I'll go soon enough."
"There's plenty of time," Carlisle assured Edward, surprising me by taking my side. I was fairly comfortable with my internet research but there was the small part of me that was nervous to be contradicted by a Doctor. "Most women try to get in as quickly as possible, but as long as you're taking care of yourself then there's no harm waiting a few weeks." Edward huffed petulantly and I giggled.
"I can't believe we're going to have a baby," I added, wistfully.
"I can't believe I'm going to be a grandfather," Carlisle grinned.
What they don't tell you in the movies is that waiting around for someone to have a baby is extremely boring. Edward and I only made it in to see Alice a couple of times, choosing instead to give her and Jasper their space. Well—Alice, Jasper, and Esme—of course. When Rosalie and Emmett made it, they stayed for a couple of hours before they had to leave because Rose had to work in the morning. Eventually, Carlisle migrated elsewhere to visit with staff members and check on his patients.
"And then there were two," I grumbled, my head resting against Edward's shoulder and my legs thrown over the side of the couch. As the only guests in the waiting room, we had our choice of seats, but that didn't make the couch anymore comfortable than the stupid plastic chairs.
"Can't we use work as an excuse, too," Edward complained, only half serious.
"Too close to home; your brothers know what you do and that you can call in," I yawned. "Besides, I'm sure it'll mean a lot to Alice if you're here when he's born."
"Alice doesn't even know we're here right now, for all she knows we went home hours ago." I giggled sleepily at his childish reasoning and he kissed the top of my head. "It's not good for my pregnant girlfriend to be sitting in an uncomfortable hospital waiting room, clearly exhausted."
I opened my mouth to respond when my phone pinged with a message from Esme, she's pushing. I grinned and held the phone up to Edward, who suddenly lost his playfulness and looked very serious. "It just hit me that my baby sister is having a baby," he confessed, his voice soft and wistful.
I smiled, reaching up a hand to cup his cheek. "How does it feel?"
"Terrifying," he half-laughed. "Part of me can't believe there's going to be a little Alice and Jasper running around; the other part of me can't believe I didn't protect my baby sister from that cock sucker." His words caught me off guard and I laughed, hard.
It only took ten minutes before a grinning Carlisle came out to tell us the news. "Eight pounds, two ounces," he announced, proudly. "Headful of hair." I squealed, jumping up so that Edward could stand and embrace his father.
"How's Alice?"
"Exhausted," Carlisle told him. "But she's doing well; they're getting her and the baby cleaned up and then you can see them."
Dallas Anthony Whitlock was born at 1:14am and he was beautiful. I had never known love until I saw the look in Jasper's eyes as he held his son. The baby had a headful of dirty blond curls that watched everyone in wonderment. "He's perfect," I told Alice, giving her a gentle hug as she started to sniffle and wiped away a few tears.
"Thank you guys so much for being here."
"We wouldn't miss it," I smiled. "Rosalie is going to be so upset that she missed it."
Alice laughed and took a deep breath, trying to calm her emotions. "That's okay, there will be plenty of time with him. Honestly, I wouldn't have blamed you if you had gone home too. It's important to rest."
"Look who's talking, baby maker," I teased. "We're going to head home and let you rest, have some time with your family. But I'll be back tomorrow to check on you and bring you decent food."
