Chapter 15: The Hitman

Paige's POV:

It was another dark night and I was patrolling the town, tonight I was on the rooftops to have a high vantage point whenever Caleb reported that he had spotted something.

Down on the street, I saw a young woman and her five-year old daughter being chased by a gang of punks.

They were not A's soldiers, they were just a bunch of guys who talked big and were cocky, but I could tell that they were not as tough as they looked.

The gang walked after the woman and yelled at her to pay them money that she owed them for something that didn't even made sense.

I jumped down to the street using my cape to break the fall, I landed between the gang and the woman. As I slowly looked at the gang they all frozen as they realized right away who I was.

"Holy shit, it's The Bat!"

"She's going to kill us and eat our souls!"

"We must get out of here!"

"RUN, RUUUUUUN!"

They all yelled, as they fled from me, they stumbled on each other.

Like I thought they were big mouths but no backbones.

"Paige watch out! Behind you" I heard Caleb over the comm link.

As I turned around I saw the gang leader swinging a baseball bat towards my face.

I grabbed the bat with my right hand, and stopping his swing completely. He looked at me completely shocked by my action and let go the bat. I grabbed both ends of the bat with my hands and broke it in half in front of him.

He was standing paralyzed in front of me. I walked up to him staring deep into his eyes.

"Leave" I said and he started running and screaming like a kid waking up from a nightmare.

I had no desire to fight the gang, they were not criminals they were barely much older than I was.

As I was about to fire my grapple hook, I felt something pressed against my left leg, I looked down and saw the five-year old girl, she was hugging my leg.

"Thank you for saving us Batgirl." She said and hugged my leg tighter.

I was surprised, I just scared off a gang of low life boys but this girl wasn't scared of me, it was like she knew I was the good one.

She let go of my leg, then I fired my grapple hook and continued to patrol over the town.

"Ok, who is your newest fan?" Caleb said mockingly over the Comm link.

"Shut up" I said to him.

"She was really cute, be careful she might steal you away from Emily." Caleb continued to joke.

"She sure was, I wish I could have a family of my own someday. Me, Emily and our children and maybe a dog." I tell him about the day-dream over the Comm link.

"You know you can." Caleb said over the comm link stopping his jokes.

"No, I can't , as long as A is a threat, I don't even know if I'll survive whoever it is, when I encounter him or her." I say to Caleb.

"Have you told Emily that?" I her Caleb ask me.

"No, but I think she knows that I think so. That's why I always act confident and make her think that I can defeat A, but truthfully I don't know if I can win." I tell him.

This was the first time I ever had told anyone what I thought about fighting A.

Before I meet Emily, I didn't have a reason to live, I felt like an empty shell. I didn't plan on surviving a fight against A, I was going to find a way that would make us both die.

But all that changed when I met Emily, she gave me a reason to continue living and I could see a future with her in a world without A. She made me want to continue living and I could never repay her for that.

"Please don't tell Emily what I said, it would break her heart." I tell Caleb over the Comm link.

"Relax your secret is safe with me, we are team Caige after all." He answers back and I give him a smirk.

Team Caige was something he had come up with once when I had returned from a patrol and said that we made a great team.

"Paige, the radar has picked up movements, someone or something is heading your way at a high-speed." I hear Caleb say over the Comm link.

I look up and see that someone is jumping from building to building getting closer and closer to me.

Once the person is right in front of me, I can get a clear view of what he looks like. It's a man dressed like a ninja hitman, his armor is showing no skin except a cut-out on his mask were his left eye is. His armor are black and red and I see he has a lot of weapons. Whoever he is, he looks dangerous.

"I figured I would see you at some point." He says.

"You must be one of A's top soldiers." I say calmly.

"NO, I'm not one of A's employed men, I am a hitman, I have taken out people for A so the deaths couldn't get tracked back to A." He says in a deep dark voice.

"But A has offered a nice price for your head, you should be flattered the price has eight digits that's more than A has ever putted on someone, I couldn't miss that chance." He said and grabs a long steel staff from his back.

"Now Batgirl let's see what you're made of." He says.

He charges me, jumps up in the air with the staff raised above his head, he slams the staff to the ground as I jump aside. I throw a punch at his direction but he successfully dodges it.

Then he grabs the middle of his staff and stars swinging it from both sides and I use the heavy armor that covers my forearms to block his attacks. As his hits slows down, I grab the end of his staff and throw him up over my head.

He lands on his feet and pulls two twin swords and I keep my distance as he charges me again. I reach the end of the building as a dodge from his swords, so I jump onto his shoulders push myself into the air and lands behind him.

That's when I feel a small pain on my left cheek, when I had jumped over him, he had quickly turned around and throw a throwing star that had graced my cheek as I had landed.

He charged me again raising his swords, I throw three batrangs at him. He cut off the first two in half with his swords but the third one had hit him on the side of his head making him lose some of his balance and I ran up and kicked him in the face so he fell onto his back.

He stood up and holstered his swords.

"Nice fight but tonight isn't your turn." He said and dropped a smoke bomb.

I activated the heat vision in my mask, but it was too late, he was gone without a trace.

"Caleb can you get any Intel on that guy?" I contact Caleb over the comm link.

"No I can't find anything yet, his file must be highly classified. I'll encounters into the police's computers and see if I can find anything about that guy and I tell you if I find anything." Caleb answered.

I notice a small black book on the ground that looks very old and worn out. I walk up and pick it up. It's like a journal from some of the assassins I've fought over the years.

I open the book and notice that it contained different dates and next to the dates there were names that have been crossed out. This is a hit list.

As I read the first two names, I'm shocked. The name was N. and B. McCullers. This was the Hitman that had killed my parents years ago, I had fought the one that had killed my parents and he had slipped out of my grasp.

I keep scrolling through the book and it was a lot of names that were crossed out.

When I reached today's date it was no name but tomorrow's it has three names.

The last one was Batgirl. The second one was P. McCullers, which made some sense, with me dead A could buy my parents company and all its reaches. The first letter on the first name was gone due to a tear in the book but I could tell the last name, it said Fields.

I panicked and called Caleb over the comm link. "Caleb quickly you must call Emily, I this she is going to get killed!" I yell in a very stressed voice.

Shortly after Caleb answered"She is not answering her cell phone."

That isn't good, I had to get to her fast.

"Caleb, keep calling her number and see if she picks up, I'm going to see if I can find her. If she answers tell her to hide, A's best hitman is after her." I say over the comm link.

I need to think where Emily would be at this point. All I can find out is that she is in bed since it was one a clock in the morning. I need to hurry to Emily's house and stop the hitman no matter what the cost.

I ran from rooftop to rooftop firing my grapple hook like crazy, but I couldn't lose any time I had to get to Emily fasts since the hitman already had a head start, I ran faster than what I thought was possible.

I reached Emily's house, all lights were off so I fired my grapple hook onto the roof and reached the window that I opened easily since after finding out about me being Batgirl, Emily always had left her window briefly opened in situations just like this. I ran up to Emily's bed. It was empty.

I fell down to my knees and slammed my fists into the floor. I couldn't believe it, Emily was gone, I had failed her, when I am the one who she needed the most.

The door opened and what I saw made me overjoyed, Emily was standing right there. I ran up to her and kissed her before she had any time to react.

"Wow, Paige it's not like I mind seeing you but why are you are at this time at night?" Emily asked me sounding confused.

"A has sent a hitman after you and I thought I was too late." I explained to her.

After that Emily didn't get nervous like anyone else would have been, she was calm.

"If you're here, then I know I'm safe from everything." She says and cups my cheek.

"You go back to sleep and I'll guard here all night." I said.

I gave her my promise to guard her all night and I kept it, the next morning Emily woke up but there was no sings of the hitman that I had fought last night. He must have gotten side tracked.

Emily wakes up and look at me. "So that's how the suit look like in daylight." She says. This was the first time I had spent all night in Emily's bedroom even if it wasn't the way we both would have wanted it.

We walk down stairs and get some coffee, then Emily turn on the news. The news shows that someone had been kidnapped last night but this time the police had a recording that was left by the kidnapper which they showed on the news.

It was the hitman looking into the camera.

"Batgirl, it was a joy to fight you last night and I would have continues fighting, but it wasn't your time last night. But first let me introduce myself, I'm Deathstroke, the most dangerous hitman, and tonight we'll fight at the church, you're going to find out why, but if you don't show up I'm going to kill her."

Deathstroke Pulls police commissioner Fields in front of the camera and then the video ends.

"Oh my god, mom." Emily says dropping her coffee cup to the floor.

"Don't cry Em." I say embracing her, comforting her. "I'm going to get your mom back safe." I said.

Deathstroke just made a fatal error, he just pissed me off, I'm going to fight him and I'm going to get Pam home to Emily, even if it meant blowing up the church with me and Deathstroke inside it.
