"Jamie! We gotta go!" Jack grabbed Jamie be his wrist when he didn't hear him. The teen was too petrified to move. They took off as fast as they could.
"Katelynn, hop on!" Hiccup yelled. Katelynn jumped at Hiccup's voice and yelped when Toothless grabbed her by the collar of her armor and tossed her onto his back. "Hold on tight."
Merida stuck the tips of her thumb and index in her mouth and whistled loudly. Angus' heavy, rapid clopping came towards her. Merida mounted on top of her horse as it passed by her. She stuck out her hand out to Rapunzel as she looped back to her, "Hurry!" Rapunzel reached out for Merida's hand and took it. Her hand quickly slipped out of Merida's. Merida reached out again, trying to grab Rapunzel. Rapunzel got a firm grip on Merida but as Merida pulled her up, Rapunzel let out a yelp and got yanked back. Her hair was caught. "Rapunzel!" Merida turned Angus around and got off. She tried to help Rapunzel yank her hair free.
Jack looked back to see that Merida and Rapunzel were falling behind fast. He turned around in midair, whipping Jamie around with him, and flew his way towards them.
Merida flicked her arm in a shooing motion. "Jack, get out of here! We'll catch up with you!"
Jack shook his head. "I can't leave—"
"Jack, go!" Rapunzel yelled.
Jack stared at Rapunzel then at Merida, then he made a short nod. He went back up the road with Hiccup and Katelynn.
"Where's Rapunzel?" Hiccup asked Jack.
"She got her hair caught on something. Merida is helping her get it loose. They'll catch up with us soon." Jack told him.
"Who are you talking to?!" Katelynn yelled, still not getting used to Toothless' speed.
"Nobody!" Hiccup said. "Just pretend I didn't say anything…"
"Jack, what is that thing we saw?" Jamie asked. His face was still a little pale from the sight of the creature.
Jack semi shrugged. "It's one of Pitch's allies. I don't know what it's called."
Jamie looked up back at the large, monstrous dragon that was flying in the sky above them. "I think it should be called 'Red Death'…"
Jack made an amused huff. "Well, aren't you creative?"
"Jack!"
Jack's attention went forward at Hiccup's frightened yell. It was followed by a short scream from Katelynn. His eyes widened as fire streamed down to their level from the dragon above. The wall of fire climbed high, cutting off their exit. Jack raised his staff and shot out thick layers at the frost, trying to get the fire to calm down. Hiccup, Katelynn, and Toothless jackknifed into the sky to avoid the sudden flames. "Come on, this way!" Jack took Jamie back the way they came. He froze in place when a large cloud of Black Sand rushed towards them, crushing parked cars on the street that was in its way. Jack shoved Jamie behind him and his staff started to glow with energy and sparked off of it. With a yell as the Black Sand started to take him, ice lightning exploded from the staff, quickly followed by a massive wave of ice and frost that rockets back up the cloud. The Black Sand exploded into ice and snow. Jack looked over his shoulder to see if Jamie was okay, a sigh of relief escaped his lips to see he was.
Jamie's eyes suddenly widened and pointed past Jack. "Jack, behind you!"
Jack looked back around and yelled when a Night Mare knocked him to the ground and knocking his staff out of his hand. With a hoof, the Night Mare pinned him down. It neighed threatingly at him, its hoof pressed down harder on Jack's chest. Jack gasped as he felt what little air that was in his lungs started to get squeezed out of him like a tube of toothpaste.
"Jack!" Jamie yelled. His eyes followed the clanking, rolling staff and they widened as they got uncomfortably close to the fire. Jamie shot off after the staff.
"Jamie, no!" Jack yelled.
Jamie grabbed the staff before it hit the flames. He stood up just too only get pinned to the ground. "Ah!" A Night Mare stood above him and it snorted angrily at Jamie. It went to bite Jamie's neck. With Jack's staff, Jamie stopped the Night Mare from harming him by lifting it up protectively over his body. The Night Mare's jaws locked onto the wooden staff and pushed against Jamie's defense. Jamie gripped onto the staff like it was his borderline between life and death. "Jack!"
Jack eyebrows scrunched down as far as they could go. "Leave…him…ALONE!" he screamed. Jack pushed off the Night Mare off of himself and slapped his hand on its side. Frost started to cover the Night Mare, it froze in place before it crumbled to the ground. Jack ran over to the Night Mare that was over Jamie. With his shoulder, Jack shoved the Night Mare to the side. He pushed it straight to the wall of fire. Jack helped Jamie up to his feet and asked him, "You okay?"
Jamie just nodded slowly and handed the staff back to Jack. As soon as it returned to its wielder's palm, frost and ice grew in the wooden grooves of the staff. "They're coming back!" Jamie hollered.
"Just stay behind me…I'll protect you." Jack waited for Jamie to nod before he took on another Night Mare. The wall of Black Sand returned…and Jack slowly realized that his powers started to weaken.
Merida pulled and pulled on Rapunzel's braid, but it never budged. She made a frustrated growl and took out her sword from its hoister. "That's it!" She swung down at the braid.
She stopped when Rapunzel yelled, "No, stop! Don't cut it!"
"It's the only way to get it out!" Merida argued.
"Find another way!" Rapunzel shot back.
Merida groaned and stopped for a second to think. "…Okay, I got an idea but you've got to help me, alright?"
Rapunzel nodded rapidly.
"Okay, we're going to unwind the braid. It should loosen it enough to get you free."
Rapunzel nodded again. "Okay." She and Merida worked as fast as they could to get the braid undone. As they got close to the end, Rapunzel looked over her shoulder. Her eyes widened. "Where did the road go?!"
Merida looked up and raised her eyebrows in both shock and surprise. The way Jack, Hiccup, and the two teens went down was blocked off by an ever churning wall of Black Sand. Her heart nearly stopped when Rapunzel looked back her way and started to hyperventilate. Merida felt hot breath go down her neck. She slowly turned around and her eyes widened in pure fear. Mor'du was right behind her, hunger for her blood was glistening in his eyes. She scrambled backwards as she shot an arrow at Mor'du. Mor'du plucked the arrow out of the air between his jaws and snapped it in two. He roared ferociously at her. His roar was so powerful, it whipped both Merida's and Rapunzel's hair backwards. Merida aimed another arrow at Mor'du. "Rapunzel…hurry up…" she said behind clenched teeth.
"I know…" Rapunzel told her back. She kept her eyes on Mor'du as she slowly undid her braid. As she got her last strand undone, she threw it at Mor'du's feet. With a grunt she tugged it backwards. Mor'du made a surprised snort as he stumbled forwards from the tug. Merida gaped at Rapunzel's hair then shook it off. She fired her arrow at Mor'du's head. The arrow bounced off of his skull. Rapunzel reeled her hair back and whipped two fistfuls of her long locks at Mor'du, they wrapped around Mor'du's thick furry wrists. Mor'du bellowed at Rapunzel, trying to shake off the whip-like locks off of him. Rapunzel jerked her hair the opposite way of Mor'du, trying to get him to stay in the same spot for Merida.
Merida was reloading and firing arrows like crazy. She smirked when an arrow finally stuck to Mor'du. Mor'du thrashed around in pain at the arrow stuck into his eye. "Keep him there, Rapunzel!"
"I'm trying! You have no idea how hard this is!" Rapunzel yelled. She yanked her hair again to keep Mor'du in place.
"Hold him, Rapunzel, you can do it!"
Katelynn was holding on the back of Hiccup for dear life. She looked over her shoulder as Toothless climbed into the blackened sky, the large dragon was starting to climb after them. It was beating its wings faster than before. "Hiccup…"
"I know! I know, just hold on…really, really, tight."
Katelynn nodded and put her mask back on, the wind stinging her face. Her grip became tighter.
Hiccup noticed that no matter how fast Toothless flew or when he fired his blue flame at the large dragon, it didn't do anything to slow it down. He looked up to the dark clouds and an idea struck him. "Toothless, up! Time to disappear!" Toothless pulled into a steep climb and into the layer of thick storm clouds. The large dragon closed in on them. Hiccup heard the hiss of gas form from its mouth. "Here it comes!" He yelled. A large blast of hot flames shot by their wake, they barely dodged. They punctured through the low layer of clouds and disappeared. The large dragon looked around angrily for Toothless and its riders as it roared furiously. From out of nowhere, Toothless dived out of the clouds and blasted a fireball at one of its wings, puncturing a hole. They disappeared before the Green Death could attack. Toothless dived and dived at the dragon again and again, firing at the dragon. Before the large dragon to retaliate, they disappeared back into the layers of black clouds. Now furious, the large dragon bellowed and spewed flames aimlessly, trying to hit them.
"Look out!" Katelynn yelled. A random line of flame hit Toothless' makeshift tail, burning it slowly to a crisp.
Hiccup looked over his shoulder to assess the damage, his eyes filled with worry. "Okay, time's up!" He pulled Toothless up and to a turn. "Let's see if this works…" They flew directly into the dragon's face, Toothless roared an insult at it. They jackknife into a steep dive. The Green Death pursued closely. Toothless pumped his wings as hard as he could, racing faster than he's ever gone before. They were just ahead of the dragon.
Katelynn looked over her shoulder to see how Toothless' tail was holding up. "Hiccup! You better wrap this up, that tail isn't gonna last any longer."
"You're okay, bud. Just a little longer, you're going to be fine." Hiccup assured his reptilian friend. "Steady…" He heard the hiss of gas forming from the large dragon. "Now!" Hiccup yelled. Hiccup hit the pedals hard as Toothless extended one wing. They pivoted in place, hurtling directly into the monster's mouth. Toothless fired into the dragon's mouth, the fireball igniting the mass of gas in the dragon's mouth. The large dragon choked on its own fire, exploding from within. It glanced forward and sees the forest ground rushing up. It threw open its wings, attempting to put on the brakes, but the punctured, damaged wings can't stop its momentum. As it choked on the expanding fireball, Toothless suddenly pull out of the dive, streaking up, past its head. It crashed to the ground headfirst, exploding on impact.
Jack's attention shot up when he heard an explosion far off. His eyes widened when he saw a fireball shot towards the sky far from his location. He squinted as his eyes tried to form a shape dodging around what looked like a tail in the fireball. They widened when he realized who it was. It was Hiccup.
Rapunzel fell backwards when Mor'du suddenly retreated from her hair's grip, she jumped when she heard an explosion.
Merida looked into the sky and gasped. Her hands covered her mouth."Hiccup?"
Hiccup, Katelynn, and Toothless weaved through the monster's massive back plates, wings, and flailing legs - a high-speed recall of the free fall slalom run. The expanding fireball raced toward them, about to swallow them. They manage to clear the obstacles. Hiccup glanced back. They're outrunning the fireball. He looks forward just in time to see the monster's massive club tail careening toward them. He tries to shift their direction. The last shreds of Toothless' tail tear away. Hiccup's pedals go dead. "No…no!" he yelled as the tail got closer. Everything went black.
Jack stared in horror as the tail hit the shadow in the flames. Two smaller shadows flew off of the shadow. "NO!"
