Chapter 47: Oak Tree
A/N: Here is the next update (it's 21:36 here so I did update the same day) I hope you'll enjoy it, the night is not over yet for Emily.
Emily's Pov-
"Paige's mansion are you sure about that?" Spencer asked.
"No not really, but it is close enough and I still got her spare key." I answered.
"It sounds like our best bet." Caleb said.
"Ok let's go." Spencer said.
We started to walk, me and Caleb were scouting ahead to make sure there was safe from patrols.
"Hey, how are you holding up?" Caleb asked.
"I'm fine" I lied.
"No you're not, I know you're still missing Paige." Caleb said and I closed my eyes and felt a single tear rolling down my cheek.
"When I was Robin I was up late at night worrying how I could tell Hanna about my nightlife, I was going to tell her once but then she told me she was pregnant then I was too worried that she'd panic so I didn't tell her." Caleb said.
"Will you tell her now? I mean you're not Robin anymore" I asked.
"I've thought about it, but how can I tell her that Paige and I were Batgirl and Robin and now that Paige is dead I think Hanna will get a heart attack if I'd tell her." Caleb said.
"Maybe you should, she won't get a heart attack." I answered.
"Yeah, I really hate keeping… hide." Caleb said and we both hid behind some trashcans as one of A's patrol vans drove past us.
"Ok, it's clear." Caleb said and then he waved for the others that it was safe to move.
"I guess there is still some Robin in you." I joked.
"No, that was from every military video game I've ever played. Caleb said. "My Robin days are over."
We continued walking and once we reached Paige's mansion I stopped at the door. I hadn't been in there since that night, I wasn't sure if I could enter when I knew everything in there would remind me of Paige.
"Emily? Aren't you going to open the door?" Hanna asked.
"I can't… I'm not over Paige." I said and everyone seemed a bit surprised.
"But you weren't…" Spencer started.
"I faked it." I said interrupted her.
"Over Paige? But you guys didn't…" Hanna said but Caleb grabbed her.
"There is something I should tell you." Caleb said and then I handed him the keys to Paige's mansion.
Caleb unlocked the door and everyone else walked in but I stayed in the yard, I needed some time alone.
I went to the back yard and sat down, I doubt A's henchmen was going to see me from the street since Paige had a big enough yard. As I walked I saw a single oak tree in the yare, standing in the middle of the yard, I walked up to it and saw a heart carved into it, inside the heart it was mine and Paige's initials.
Flashback:
Paige took me to the back of the mansion.
"You know this is the first time I've ever seen the back of your mansion." I said as Paige and I walked around.
"Really? I've shown you the Bat cave but not my backyard?" Paige asked raising an eyebrow.
"Well, the Bat Cave is more interesting than the backyard." I said and Paige kissed my cheek then she walked up to a big oak tree.
"You know when my father bought this place to build the mansion he made it clear to the contract workers that this tree stays." Paige said and placed her hand on the tree.
"Maybe he wanted to hang a swing from it." I said.
"I did like the swings." Paige said.
"Me to." I said and playfully shoved Paige.
"Oh, you're dead Fields!" Paige shouted and started to chase me. I ran as fast as I could but I had no idea just how fast Paige was before I noticed it Paige had locked her arms around my waist and she threw us to the ground.
We lay down in the grass and laughing.
"You start to become slow Fields, it's probably time to spend more time in the pool." Paige said, she were still laughing
"Well you're the Superhero, you must have like the best physique possible." I said playfully hitting Paige, then Paige grabbed my wrist making me look at her.
"And it's also why I'm on top." Paige said and rolled on top off me and we started kissing.
"Well I wouldn't be too cocky." I said and tried to roll over to be on top but Paige wouldn't budge.
"You're a really comparative person." I said looking into Paige's eyes.
"In many ways." Paige answered.
"I still love you." I said and started kissing Paige's neck slowly traveling down and I placed my hand on Paige's thigh and started moving my hand in circles. Paige didn't seemed to notice my plan, I mover my other hand to the hem of Paige's shirt and moved it up to her back. Paige opened her mouth and our tongues met then I rolled us over so I was on top of Paige.
"Looks like I'm on top of you." I said and quickly kissed Paige's cheeks and the tip off her nose.
"Let's get inside before we get caught on google maps." I said and Paige nodded, I slowly got up from her grinding my hips against her front to tease her.
"I both love and hate when you do that." Paige said as I stood up.
"Well we don't have to end, we can continue this indoors." I said.
"Ok, you go ahead there is one quick thing I have to do." Paige said and I kissed her lips softly.
"You get five minutes." I said and went inside.
Present:
"Oh Paige, why is it that even when you're not here you still protect me from A." I said as I sat down facing the tree.
"Paige, I can't go on like this, without you I feel empty. I miss you so much." I said and then I heard some noise from the tree like someone was jumping from a branch. "Paige?" I looked but it was nothing up there, it was probably just the wind or a squirrel.
I got up from the ground, no matter where I was there was always going to be reminded about Paige. I went back to the front door and went inside Paige's mansion.
Once I was inside I saw Hanna holding Caleb's hand.
"I always thought you were my hero." She said and kissed Caleb.
"Well I'm a retired hero now." Caleb said and Hanna kissed him.
"Do you still have the Robin suit? Because I was thinking tomorrow night we could… oh Emily… How much of that did you hear?" Hanna said when she noticed me.
"Too much." I said and Hanna turned cherry red.
"Well Paige has probably done the same thing at least once." Caleb said trying to avoid the embarrassment.
"No, she haven't." I lied.
"Does Toby know?" I asked.
"Yes, Spencer told him." Caleb said.
"So Paige was the legendary Batgirl, who'd guess?" Hanna asked.
"When she told me about that I thought she was either crazy or drunk." Caleb said.
"I figured it out by stumbling on her Bat suit, I didn't take it good." I admitted.
"And I figured it out after she put a false trace for me to find." Spencer said as she entered the room.
"Hey Spence, how's Toby taking it?" Caleb asked.
"He is cool with it. He might take some time to fully come to term with it but he didn't get mad." Spencer said and then Toby entered the room.
"Tobias, don't be mad at Spencer she wasn't in any danger since she was mostly sitting by the Bat computer in the cave." I said.
"I'm not mad I'm just a bit shocked that's all." Toby said.
"So can I see this Bat cave?" Hanna asked.
"You can't it is in lockdown, only Paige can open it now." Spencer said.
Suddenly Spencer had trouble breathing, she started to lose her balance, but Toby caught her before she fell to the floor.
"What's going on?" Caleb asked.
"She's having an asthma attack." I said, Spencer had often had asthma attacks when she was eleven but bet this was the first time in several years that it had happened.
"Spence! Spencer listen, where is your inhaler?" Toby asked.
"I… I don't have it." Spencer said.
"Ok, ok Spence look at me just focus and breathe slowly like this." Toby said and demonstrated how Spencer should breathe.
"We need to get her an inhaler, I'm going to a pharmacy." I said and ran for the front door.
"Wait! I'm coming with you." Caleb said but Hanna grabbed his sleeve.
"Please don't leave me." She said and her big eyes could tell that she was scared.
"I can handle this, it's not like anyone else can." I said and grabbed a pitch black jacket that belonged to Paige before I walked out of the door.
I slowly sneaked down to the street and hid in a narrow alley where I stayed and took a few deep breaths, I had been out for just a few minutes and my heart was pounding like crazy.
"Ok Emily, you can do this. If Paige could do this every night you can do this at least one night." I whispered to myself, I knew I was nowhere near as prepared for this as Paige was when she was patrolling during the nights.
I slowly sneaked out of the alley and ran until I reached a park that's when I heard a car slowly approaching. I quickly jumped behind a bush and hid.
I could see the van driving slowly towards me I froze in place hoping the jacket I had borrowed would hide me from the cars headlights. I moved the jackets collar as far up as I could to hide my face. Now I couldn't see the van I could only see the bright light from the headlights moving closer towards me as the car was driving close enough to see me if it was daytime. I could hear the car engine stop, in panic I closed my eyes and prayed that they didn't spot me from the car.
I heard a car door open and I could hear two guys walking out of the car. Please just go back to the car and leave.
"Ok, this is good enough place as any." A man's voice said.
"Ok, five buck says you can't hit it." Another voice said.
"You're on. Three… two… one." Then I heard a gunshot and I felt something hit me, it was too big to be a bullet it felt more like a soda can.
Then I heard some footsteps walking towards me, I peaked up and saw one off the guys walking towards where I was, he stopped right in front of me. My heart was beating so fast I knew that if those guys wouldn't kill me I'd die from a heart attack. I wanted to be home I prayed that they'd just leave.
"Hey Jeff, here is the beer can you missed!" I heard a voice say.
"Ok, double or nothing." The other said.
"You see that bush, I bet I can…"
"Attention all units we got visual of someone running around the docks with explosive weapons, I repeat at the docks with explosive weapons." I heard a voice from a walkie talkie.
"You heard it Jeff. Let's go. One of the guys said then they ran to their car and quickly drove away.
I can't believe my luck, now there are nothing standing between me and the pharmacy, I got up and thanked god for my luck. I hurried to the pharmacy, once I got there I saw that it was unlocked so I hurried inside and started to search for an inhaler, it took some time since the only times I was at the pharmacy it was to get prescription medicines. I kept searching until I finally found an inhaler, but as I grabbed it I saw two men walking into the pharmacy, it was the same two guys from earlier.
"Can you believe that it was a false alarm?" One of them said.
"Yeah, I hope I'll see someone breaking the curfew I'm in the mood to kill." The other said sounding serious. I hid under the front desk.
"Hey, is this yours?" I heard some guy say.
"No, it's a lip gloss you moron!" The other shouted.
I moved my hand to my pocket and I noticed that my lip gloss was missing.
"Wait a minute, this has been used a few times and the door was opened when we got here." He said. "Hey Jeff, turn on the light we got someone breaking he curfew in here." I heard the man say than I saw all light got turned on, this is not good.
"Come out come out wherever you are." I heard the men say as they walked around looking for me. I had to escape, if I stayed here they'd eventually find me. I tried to find a moment to sneak past them but it had to happen soon.
"Hey Jeff, check the stockroom I'll check this room." I heard one off the men say and once the other guy had entered the stockroom I slowly crawled out from my hiding spot and peaked over the front desk and saw the other man, he was standing too close to the exit so I couldn't sneak past him. I quickly but quietly ran into an aisle when he looked away, I stopped and sank down with my back against the aisle, I knew that the man would still be in the way off the door so I had to lure him away from it.
I looked around and saw that I was in an aisle that had lots of glasses and that gave me an idea, I grabbed a glass and then I ran to the far end of the aisle further away from the door, then I threw the glass on the ground, the sound the glass made when it shattered caught the man's attention, he walked up to investigate the noise and then he left the door unguarded.
I walked around the corner to another aisle this one was right in front of the door, I sneaked as quickly as I could making sure that I'd reach the door before the man would return, once I was four feet's away from it I heard someone shout.
"HEY BILL! SHE'S AT THE DOOR!" The other man had returned from searching the stock and now he saw me. I started to run, I dashed out of the pharmacy but I could hear that those guys where just behind me.
"Hold it right there bitch!" I heard them shout after me, I just kept running hoping that I'd outrun them.
BANG! BANG! BANG! I heard gunshots behind me, these guys really wanted me dead and so I pushed myself to run faster.
As I passed a corner I heard that now only one guy was chasing me, I most have lost the other I kept running to shake the other guy off.
I reached another corner but suddenly the other guy appeared around the corner right in front of me, I turned left into an alley but it was a dead end, now I was stuck.
I locked around trying to find a way out but it was useless, I just curled up next to some trashcans.
"There is no point in hiding. You're only delaying the inevitable." I heard them say as they moved in closer. This was it, soon I'd be dead and hopefully reunited with my Paige.
"Come out, come out where ever you are." I heard one of the men say and then both laughed.
"Hey what the…" I suddenly heard so I peeked out from the trashcans and saw a dark figure in the distant, I couldn't tell who it was but he or she was attacking then men that had chased me, I tried to make out who it was but it was too dark for me to see anything.
After a few second both men were knocked out and when I crawled out from the trashcans I saw felt something under my hand, I picked it up and it was a Bat rang. I looked up at the dark figure who seemed to be looking at me. It must be Caleb, he must have gotten worried and putted on his Robin suit to go out and find me.
I put the Bat rang in my pocket and started walking towards the dark figure.
"Caleb, thank you so much" I said but instead of answering me the dark figure just ran away.
"Caleb wait!" I said as I ran out of the alley. Once I was out of the alley I couldn't see anyone.
"Oh, thank you very much Caleb, you couldn't take me with you before you ran back to the mansion?" I said and walked the rest of the way to Paige's mansion.
Once I reached the door I walked into the kitchen where I knew Spencer was.
"I got the inhaler." I said as I showed it to Toby.
"Thank you Em." Toby said as I gave it to Spencer.
"Emily, Paige maybe was Batgirl but tonight you were the hero." Toby said as Spencer started to use the inhaler. Those words made me happier than I had been in a long time.
"Thank you Tobs, I'll leave you and Spencer alone now." I said and went into the living room where Hanna and Caleb sat, they were watching "The legend of Zorro".
"Em, you're back." Hanna and Caleb said.
"Ok, Caleb you don't have to act surprised you saw me in the alley.
"What are you talking about?" Caleb asked confused.
"Come on Caleb, the alley, those two guys, you knocked them out to save me." I said.
"No I've been here with Hanna all the time, we've watched The mask of Zorro and now were watching The legend of Zorro." Caleb said.
"Quit messing around, I even got one of your batrangs right here." I said and reached into my pocket and took out the Bat rang and showed to him.
"Emily where did you get this?" Caleb asked.
"You threw it at the villains when you save me." I answered.
"Emily, this isn't one of mine, mine are shaped like birds. This is a bat." Caleb said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"This is one of Paige's." Caleb said.
