The moon stayed in the center of the sky, forever casting its pale light on the empty, quiet streets of Burgess. Everything was frozen in time. There wasn't much time left until the world would literally crumble alongside the space-time continuum...and Pitch taking over.
Jack doubted himself for going to the high school with Jamie and Merida, who were both riding Angus. Birna has led them into a trap before and she could absolutely do it again. It had trap written all over it. No matter what, he will never trust the girl, for what she had done somehow all those years ago. He asked Jamie, "You sure we should be going to the school?"
Jamie nodded. "She said that we had to come, Jack."
"Well, what if it's her house all over again? That's all I'm wondering…" Jack rested his staff on his shoulder after he poked a nearby flower, which didn't turn to frost at all because of the lack of time flow. "Doesn't this seem…weird to you? Like at all? You said yourself that she didn't sound scared or frightened or anything like that. She sounded calm—"
"I don't know, Jack," Jamie admitted. "But that first time wasn't on purpose."
Jack snorted. "Yeah, right…"
Merida glared at the two. "Oi. Boys, stop it. You're worse then me brothers." She returned her attention ahead. Jamie told her exactly where to go so it wasn't difficult to navigate through the winding streets of the small town anymore. Her eyes narrowed when she saw something move up far ahead. She gently pulled Angus' reins back, making him stop.
"What's the hold up?" Jack was shushed by the sharp raising of Merida's arm.
Merida got off of Angus and guided him slowly. She had her other hand on her sword's hoister. Her eyes widened when a dense fog rose up from the ground and advanced slowly towards them where she saw something move. She slightly pulled out her sword, getting ready for anything. "Jack…"
Jamie's voice seemed to echo through the frozen night air, "The school's workshop is dead ahead…" he shifted around on Angus' back, trying to see better. "I can't see anything! I can barely see you Merida."
"Jamie, stay on Angus," Jack practically ordered him. Jamie nodded, but Jack could barely see that, either. He took his staff off of his shoulder and held it out to where Jamie would be in the dense fog. "Here, grab this." There was a long pause before he felt the other end of the staff wiggle and get a bit heavier. "Stay close together!" he called to Merida and Jamie.
"I can't see where I'm goin'!" Merida exclaimed.
"Keep going straight!" Jamie advised. "The school is close."
Merida sighed heavily. "I don't even know where straight is in this fog…" Her navigation skills were thrown off by the dense fog. Now, she couldn't even see past her nose anymore it was so bad. All she could see was misty grey and white. Her grip tightened on Angus' reins and she wrapped her wrist around it as well. She didn't notice that she was shaking in fear as she wondered aimlessly.
Jack looked up to the sky. His eyes widened when the fog blocked off the moon's light. He gulped. That's a bad sign…a really bad sign. The atmosphere around him became more tense and fearful as it not only get foggier, it got darker. He couldn't see Jamie anymore. In panic mode, he shook his staff and waited for it to shake in response. He sighed in relief when Jamie shook the staff on his end, letting Jack know he still had a hold of it. "Jamie?" Jack yelled in the fog.
"Yeah?"
"How much farther?"
"I don't know! But if we're still going straight, soon!" Jamie replied. Jack heard Jamie ask Merida, "See anything?"
"Not a thing," Merida's voice sounded too far away for Jack. "But it feels like that I'm not on the black stone—"
"Street," Jack corrected.
"Street, right…thanks, Jack…I think I'm on grass now."
"We should be getting close then," said Jamie.
That made Jack feel a little better. He didn't like this one bit…
He tensed up and stopped in his tracks when he heard a low growl. He felt his staff jerk nearly out of his hands, then the horse whine loudly. Merida's voice called back, "Jack? Is something wrong?"
Jack looked around in the fog frantically. "I thought I heard something…"
It was Jamie that asked, "Like what?" his voice was hinted with fear.
"I-I don't know…it sounded like…" Jack's eyes widened in realization.
"Like what?" Merida questioned. She tried to find her way to Jack. "Like what, Jack? Say somethin'! Jack? Jack?!"
Jack felt something hot go down his neck and the back of his hair ruffle up. This heart was going a hundred miles an hour as he turned at the pace of a snail. All he saw was black. Shaking like there was no tomorrow, he looked up slowly. His heart jumped up into his throat and his hair stood on end. "RUN!" He screamed. He whacked the rear end of the horse with his staff, yanking it out of Jamie's hands. A roar almost overcame his warning.
"Jack!" Jamie yelled over the clopping of rapid feet of Angus. He felt hands gripping on his arm frantically. He looked down to see Merida trying to get on. With all his might, he tried to pull Merida up onto Angus' back but he wasn't strong enough. Instead, he fell backwards off of Angus and landed heavily on his back, making him scream in pain.
"Jamie!" Merida crouched down to Jamie and asked him, "Are ya hurt?!"
Jamie ignored the question and hissed between sharp intakes of air, "Where's Jack?"
"I don't know…" Merida helped Jamie get up to his feet. He could barely stand on his own. She yelled into the fog along with Jamie, "Jack! Jack! Where are you?!"
Their hair went on end when they heard a demented roar instead of Jack's voice. In the fog, a red speck suddenly gleamed.
"Mor'du!" Merida yelled in terror. She whistled for Angus to take Jamie but her loyal horse never came to her. In panic, she put Jamie's arm behind her neck and started to move forward as fast as she could, taking Jamie with her. "Come on!"
"Wait! What about Jack?" Jamie questioned. "I can't leave him!"
"Jamie, we have to go! Now come on!" Merida dragged Jamie faster. She yelped in surprise when Jamie suddenly slipped out of her grip and toppled down to the ground and tripping over him, sending her crashing down on the grass face first. She scrambled to Jamie and tried to get him up to his feet as she watched the red speck in the fog get closer and closer. Goose bumps erupted from her skin when she heard a cold, dark laugh ripple through the air. Now she was frantic. "Jamie, get up! Get up, please!" But Jamie didn't move. Merida could now see the basic shape of the demon bear through the fog. She couldn't get to her bow off of her fast enough, her hands shaking too much to be any use to her.
When Merida looked up, Mor'du's face was centimeters away from hers. It lunged at her, making her back up and topple down to the ground. Mor'du got on top of Merida and roared in her face.
"Jack!" Merida screamed on the top of her lungs. Her vision went black.
