AN: I really, really appreciate everyone that took the time to leave me a review. You guys warmed my heart and it helped me a lot. I have a story to write so I'll keep writing :). Hope you enjoy it!
"Mommy, I want to come," Amia fretted for the tenth time in a space of an hour.
Olivia sighed, halting her movements to look down at her. Mia's face was fixed in a frown but her two pigtails made her beyond cute.
In a calm, soothing tone she replied, "Sweetheart, we talked about this, we're going to your sister's school dance and we cannot take you. Remember you were excited to go spend the night by aunty Raye? You'll get to play with your cousins. It will be fun." She finished with a wide smile.
"I don't want to go anymore," Mia rebuffed, jutting out her bottom lip, still too cute to deem her miserable.
Before Olivia could reply, they heard, "Knock, knock," and in walked Raye, dressed in simple jeans and a white T-shirt with her raven hair pulled in a low ponytail. Olivia turned from the vanity where she had just finished doing her makeup towards her sister in law.
"Aunty!" Amia beamed, launching forward into her aunt's awaiting arms. Raye picked her up and began kissing her rosy cheeks.
"Hey baby girl, Cameron and Christian can't wait to see you, they have all these fun games planned," Raye spoke enthusiastically to her niece, relaying details of what her sons have planned for her and Tommy, keenly aware that she was having a hard time staying behind while her parents and big sister go out for the night.
"Yay…" Mia squealed and Olivia smiled, happy that she didn't have to verbally wrestle with her anymore.
"Thank you," Olivia mouthed at Raye before walking to their side and gave Amia a soft squeeze on her forearm. "See missy, I told you, you're going to have fun."
They chitchatted for a while until Fitz poked his head through the doorway and said it was time for them to go.
That Saturday night Fitz drove them out in the Mercedes SUV. These days they were rolling much lighter and doing most of the heavy lifting, instead of relying heavily on employs. On occasions when they needed a babysitter, Raye and Harrison were always there, and vice versa when they need one. Huck was the only fulltime worker they have aside from their businesses and he served mainly as driver and security for the kids. They were other people that worked part time, such as their housekeeper; she came in thrice a week to clean, and then there were other security personnel that were hired when needed.
"Nervous?" Olivia studied her daughter's guarded face when they exited the vehicle in the parking lot. Iya looked beautiful in a mid thigh length blush pink dress. It carried a modest sweetheart neckline, and medium width, rhinestone accentuated straps that held up the dress. The entire dress was overlaid in soft mesh, giving off an illusion and the waist was also adorned with a thin band of rhinestones. Her hair was bone straight and flowed down her back and curled in at the end, with one side being held back with a matching rhinestone hair comb. On her feet she wore silver ballet flats and a small silver wristlet around her slender wrist.
"A little," she confessed, looking into her mother's eyes that were almost on the same level as hers. Iya took after her father in regards to his tallness; she will no doubt be taller than her mother in a few years since she was already as tall as her.
"Don't be, it's going to be fine, sweetheart and we'll be there if you need us." Olivia understood that there was some apprehension being that it was her first official dance and she was at that age where things were constantly changing.
She smiled her gratitude. "And please let dad behave."
"Hey!" Fitz walked around the vehicle, shrugging on his black suit jacket as he came to stand in front of them in the dimly lit parking lot. "I always behave."
Ignoring his statement, "And no dancing!" Iya warned him half seriously.
"Why aren't you telling your mother not to dance?" He asked curiously as they began to walk towards the school building.
"Because mom can actually dance…" She trailed, chuckling. Olivia laughed, finding it funny.
"Really? What do you call this?" Fitz stopped midstride and did his infamous twirl in the parking lot. Olivia began laughing uncontrollably.
"Dad, stop! You're going to embarrass me." Iya hid her face with a hand.
"Or this?" He began swinging his hip from side to side and snapping his fingers.
Iya hasten her footsteps to move farther away from him. Her father may only be 43 years old but to her that was old and he shouldn't be behaving like this.
"Fitz, stop," Olivia said, after her laughter was subdued.
Fitz stopped and laughed, already enjoying himself. "Tonight is going to be good," he told Olivia, taking her hand in his. Meanwhile, Iya was already several yards in front of them.
Iya's POV
As soon as she reached inside of the ballroom, which was actually their gym room transformed for the occasion, she ditched her parents for her friends. The room was decorated in soft lights of varying colors, complementing the theme of the night: Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice. It was an ongoing theme since the beginning of the school year.
Iya, Zoey and Kendra had just grabbed drinks from the fruity punch bowl and were standing off to one side of the room.
"Mmm… look whom the cat dragged in," Kendra said, smacking her lip-gloss wearing lips. Kendra was the shortest out of the bunch but she had a mouth on her and because of it people didn't mess with her.
Both Zoey and Iya looked in the direction her eyes were staring and saw Tiffany walking into the room with none other than Aiden by her side. Tiffany was a gorgeous blonde and she was the first girl to go through puberty that blessed her with orange size breasts. The boys in their grade and above all wanted her because she was that girl now.
Iya gulped watching at the duo and couldn't help but to feel upset. She was mad that Tiffany always got what she wanted, mad that Aiden was with her and mad with herself for crushing on him.
"I can't stand that bitch!" Kendra fumed, still reeling from the stunt Tiffany played on all three of them, suffice to say, they were no longer friends with her after they'd all gotten suspension and had returned back to school, only to hear Tiffany spreading rumors about them. She said that they were the ones that called Niketa the word and not her. No one of course believed her because they were all in the cafeteria when she said it. However, the other three girls wised up and dropped her as a friend.
"Language!" Iya hissed, looking around the auditorium to see if her parents were somehow eavesdropping on her. She wouldn't want them to know that her friends and her used such words.
"Yea, cool it." Zoey added, her parents were chaperone the dance too, so she wanted to be on her best behavior.
"She's a bi-a-tch! Everyone knows that Aiden likes you, Iya, and what does she do? Ask him out. I bet you she did!" Kendra continued to rant but in more of a PG 13 kind of way.
Iya raised her hand for her to stop. "I don't care." And a part of her truly didn't. Same time Niketa walked by with her friends and said, "Hi Iya, Zoey and Kenny."
"Hi Niketa," they returned in unison. Niketa had forgiven them, so they were all cordial with each other.
The girls chitchatted a bit until the DJ announced it was time to get on the dance floor. Every year Leman's Prepatory threw two dances for the sixth grade; one was informal and the other formal. The formal one was kept closer to Christmas and was used mostly as a fundraiser and the informal one was kept in the beginning part of the school year. They were at the informal one so they were allowed to have fun upbeat music versus the ballroom dance they were to endure.
I've got fire for a heart
I'm not scared of the dark
You've never seen it look so easy
I got a river for a soul
And baby you're a boat
Baby you're my only reason
When the familiar tune of the One Direction Drag Me Down song began, the girls joined the increasingly crowded dance floor. The disco ball was shining a mirage of lights onto the crowd below, reflecting off of their clothes.
All my life
You stood by me
When no one else was ever behind me
All these lights
They can't blind me
With your love, nobody can drag me down
The crowd of sixth graders jumped up and down around her as they sang the song at the top of their lungs. Iya didn't shy away when it came to dancing. She loved it and took advantage of every opportunity to do it. Her hair was swooshing against her back as she danced in time to the song, hands straight in the air as she allowed herself to feel the music. She got that from her father, although he wasn't much of a dancer he surely loved music.
When the song ended another came on and so on and so on. An hour later and the dance floor was still popping, slight interruptions only came in the form of chaperones and teachers breaking apart those that were getting too handsy with each other.
Then the DJ announced, "We're going to slow it down for a while. Grab a dancing partner if you want or dance by yourself it doesn't matter."
Iya and her friends looked at each other and laughed when he suggested, dance with yourself.
"Let's dance together. I'll hold your hand, you hold Kendra's and Kendra will hold mine," Zoey suggested, seeing that everyone was either pairing up with someone of the opposite sex or with their best friend, but since they were an uneven number they had to triple up.
When they were still getting situated Iya felt a slight tap on her shoulder and when she looked around she came face to face with Aiden. He looked handsome in his navy blue suit jacket, dark denim jeans, white shirt and a red slim tie.
"Do you want to dance?" Iya gasped and her gray eyes widened. Without answering him she looked at her two best friends for support and they were just as in shock as her based off of their looks. Eventually, it was her friends subtle prodding that made her replied with an unsure yes.
Aiden smiled and led her in a clearer part of the dance floor.
When the song began playing she immediately recognized it as one of her father's songs and began looking around the room for him. She quickly diverted her eyes back to the brown eyes boy and smiled shyly when he said, "You look nice…"
"Thanks," she replied bashfully. "You too," she uttered as an afterthought. She wasn't good at this.
The duo were standing several inches apart and only touching by the hands. Aiden held onto both of her hands as they swayed in time to the music.
"Are you enjoying the dance?" he asked lowly as they continued to dance in time to the song.
"Uh huh. You?" She wanted to ask him about Tiffany but was unsure if she should.
"Now I am," he smiled brightly at her and she blushed.
From across the room Olivia was holding back an agitated Fitz. "I'm going to kill him," Fitz said, looking at the boy dancing with his little girl and having her blush.
"Babe, relax," Olivia was amused but tried to hide it as it wasn't the time or the place.
"Is that him? Is that Aiden, Livvie?" He cast his eyes on his wife who was by his side and back onto the dance floor, watching the duo like a hawk.
"They're not even dancing close… Oh, oh," Olivia's eyes widen for her husband's sake when Aiden wrapped an arm around Iya's upper back and pulled her in closer but not too close, at least not in the way that they would.
"I swear to God…"
"You want to dance?" Olivia interrupted, because that was the only way to get him out of his head and not rush over to embarrass their child.
"No…" he answered gruffly.
"Too bad, I want to dance, I heard a really hot guy sang this song." She teased, as his song was still on. She watched as a small smile splayed on his lip. Without waiting for him to concede she grabbed him by the hand and made her way onto the dance floor.
By the time they were on the dance floor the song ended and a faster one started.
The second Fitz realized what song it was his entire mood changed. He actually really loved the song, Can't Feel My Face by The Weekend.
And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb
And she'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come
But at least we'll both be beautiful and stay forever young
This I know, yeah, this I know
Olivia was already beaming at her husband's antics. He was warming up, fingers clicking and hips moving from side to side. She didn't like better fun as she encouraged him.
She told me, "Don't worry about it"
She told me, "Don't worry no more"
We both know we can't go without it
She told me you'll never be in love, oh, oh, woo
Fitz was now fully in the zone and Olivia was dancing circles around him. The two were in their own world and were clearly having their own fun. A few of the other parents joined them on the dance floor.
I can't feel my face when I'm with you
But I love it, but I love it, oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you
But I love it, but I love it, oh
Iya's POV
Iya stood waiting at the side of the drinks table as Aiden fixed them both a drink at his insistence. It was then that she noticed her parents dancing. Immediately her jaws slackened as she looked upon the scene and if that wasn't bad enough her father did his infamous twirl and her mother looked on proud.
"Aren't those your parents?" Aiden passed the fruity unspiked drink to her and she accepted.
"Thank you. Yes they are." She answered softly.
"They're cool. Look at your dad move. He got skills…"
Aiden was clearly blind, Iya thought. "Yea…" she muttered half enthused, taking a sip of her drink. They stood silently watching on for several minutes.
"So… do you want to dance again?"
Before Iya could respond, Tiffany came swooping in. "Aiden, where have you been?" She asked, purposely ignoring Iya.
Instead of answering her question, Aiden asked, "what do you want, Tiffany?" annoyance dripping from his voice.
"I want us to dance," she said, twirling her hair around her index finger. Iya scoffed and rolled her eyes before walking away from them.
"Iya, wait!" Aiden called out but it was too late. She had already rushed into the safety net of her friends.
Turning back to Tiffany, Aiden growled, "Leave me alone. Our parents might be friends but you and I aren't."
"You had a good time?" Olivia asked Iya, as she poured hot water into a cup to make tea. On their way home Iya was mostly quiet and seemed to be in her own thoughts so they took it as their cue not to badger her. However, now that Fitz was upstairs changing out his suit she took the opportunity to question her.
"Yea, I guess…" Iya shrugged, brushing off imaginary lint from her dress.
Olivia carefully studied her daughter as she stirred honey into her hot water. Something had to happen for her to be in this funk, she thought. "Did something happen?" Olivia raised her eyebrows.
Iya huffed, hunched her back over, and spread her hands on the countertop.
"Ugh… Tiffany likes Aiden too or something."
Replacing the cup onto the granite surface with a confused expression marring her face, Olivia asked, "What do you mean?"
"They came to the dance together," Iya explained.
"Oh. But the two of you were dancing together." Olivia stated her observation matter-of-factly.
"Yup…" she said dejectedly.
Olivia sighed, walking around the kitchen island to be on the same side as her daughter. "Sweetheart, don't let it get to you. You've just started this journey and it's only the beginning. Don't fret over some boy. One day, you'll meet your special someone that will not only want you but will give you his undivided attention, but right now, you live in the moment and enjoy your friends –you only get this time once."
Iya gave her a small smile, soaking up her words. Her mother was right; she's not going to let it get to her. Moving the conversation along, she asked, "Who was your first crush, Mom?"
Olivia chuckled and took a sip of her ginger honey tea. Smoothing her hand down the front of her white sheath dress, she answered, "A boy by the name of Alistair, he was from my neighborhood. I thought I was in love…" Olivia chuckled at the memory. "Looking back now, I can see that it was the farthest thing from love."
Iya was curious to know more about her experience. "How many times have you been in love?"
Olivia smirked. Raising her eyebrows at her eldest child, she planted her derriere onto the vacant barstool and positioned herself to face her.
"Only once," she answered with a faraway smile.
"Dad?"
"Uh huh. He was my first and only for many things," she smiled wider, a twinkle forming in her eyes.
"Ewww… Say no more. You two are crazy," Iya joked, while secretly loving the fact that her parents were so in love, as many of the kids in her class had divorced parents.
"Crazy in love…" Olivia quipped with a smirk.
"I rest my case." Iya laughed for the first time since coming home. She loved that she could talk to her mother about anything, knowing that she would be completely honest with her.
"I love you, Sweet Cheeks," Olivia stood to her feet and gave her a side-hug.
"Love you too, Mom."
Glancing at the sleek silver Movado watch secured on her right wrist, Olivia stated, "Let's head up."
On their way up they ran into Fitz coming down the stairs, dressed in his sleeping attire with damp hair.
"I was just coming to see what you two were up to," he commented, rerouting his steps.
Olivia nodded. "Did you call the kids?"
"I have and spoke to Tommy. Mia is already sleeping, she was too tired, which is to be expected when she refused to take her nap."
"Sissy is going to regret taking her naps when she reaches my age," Iya stated, sandwich between her parents as they climbed the steps.
"Ok, old woman," Fitz teased, pulling her into his side and ruffling her hair.
"Dad…" Iya reprimanded, fixing her hair.
"You need to wrap your hair," Olivia said, watching her struggle to fix it. "I'll come help you in a bit."
"Gotcha!"
At the top of the stairs they parted ways.
In the dimness of light a cocoon of warmth spread across lovers, Olivia and Fitz were enjoying a late night pillow talk while their daughter slept down the hall. They were facing each other, features barely highlighting in the darkness.
"I think it's great you're getting the exposure for the Art program," Fitz commended in a hush tone.
"Me too. I think it will be great. The gallery is kind of struggling right now and it will be great publicity."
Fitz smiled, enraptured by her passion filled voice – the way she always sounded when speaking about things dearest to her heart.
"An entire spread in Essence Magazine," Olivia breathed in wonderment. She still couldn't believe that they wanted her to be a part of their Black Women Making Strides issue. Overjoyed didn't begin to cover the emotions she felt that day when she received the call. Although her gallery was fairly popular she never received such a big recognition aside from the local newspaper.
"You deserve it. And with everything you do for the kids, I say it's about time somebody start talking."
"Stop… It's not that big of a deal," Olivia blushed; leave it to her husband to shower her in praises.
"It is that big of a deal. You're taking time, money and effort to help the underprivileged. I say let's skip Essence Magazine and make you TIME's person of the year."
She stretched a gentle hand forward and began rubbing the length of his arm, and in a small voice, one filled with reverence, she replied, "then they'll have to make two issues because you deserve it too, husband." Referring to the good works that he also does.
Fitz groaned and in a suggestive tone, asked, "What else do I deserve?"
"I don't know," she feigned ignorance.
"I'll tell you what I think you deserve." Fitz moved his body across hers, supporting his weight on his elbows. With his face a hairbreadth away, he whispered, "I deserve a kiss."
An eyebrow raised, she quipped, "only that?"
He smirked, "for now."
She smiled and tilted her head forward to accept his kiss. The kiss was languid and deep. She could feel his tongue in every crevice of her mouth and it felt amazing, along with the delicious feel of his body pressing into hers. They kissed unhurriedly for several minutes, making out like teenagers that discovered the heady touch of pleasure for the first time and only pulling apart for oxygen.
With a raging erection pressing into her thigh, Fitz pulled apart for more than a few seconds of reprieve, leaving their foreheads connected as they regulated their normal breathing pattern.
"Can you imagine that someday this will be Iya and some boy making out?"
"Are you serious right now?" Fitz groaned, rolling off of her and onto his back. "Way to kill the mood."
Olivia chuckled, "I'm sorry but she's getting so big and I can't help but to think about what's to come. Right now we're in the calm but next year she's a teenager and so on and so on. How are we supposed to raise a teenager?" her voice ended in an alarmed tone.
In a calm voice, Fitz answered, "I know, keep my gun loaded."
Olivia rolled her eyes, " you don't even own a gun." When he didn't immediately answer, she quickly sat up. "Or do you?"
"I plead the fifth," he laughed.
"Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III, do you own a gun?"
Fitz turned his face away from her.
"Oh my god! You do! Where do you keep it?"
After a beat he confessed," In a safe in the basement. It's locked away."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Wow. How long have you had it?"
"I can't remember, a couple years now." He turned his face back to her.
"Wow. Who are you right now?"
Fitz shook his head in humor before seriously stating, "A man that wants to keep his wife and family safe."
She accepted his answer for the time being. "Well, as long as it is safe from the kids I guess it's ok."
Fitz pulled her into his arms and mimicked her, "I guess it's ok" while kissing her neck.
AN: Going forward we'll learn more of what Fitz and Olivia are currently doing with their businesses. Not much has changed but some aspects of it have. Also, I want to reiterate that in the beginning of their relationship Fitz promised Olivia that despite of him being a celebrity he would give her a normal life. So even though they might be rich, they choose to live "normally." How cool she'll be featured in Essence Magazine? I'll write a little interview section about it. Our baby girl Iya is already having boy troubles but rest assured that she's not taking that on. I want to capture this critical moment of her life, with her having crushes while maintaining her innocence. Hope it comes across that way. Anyways, let me know what you think of this chapter. All reviews are welcomed.
Btw, all the Fitz dancing scenes were inspiried by the S5 video of Tony and Kerry. Tony is too adorkable.
Until next time,
XOXO
