**I do own Katelynn (Birna Katelynn Odden-Haddock) and Chronos G. Reaper, however
The Darkness inside imploded on itself, making the inside past the glass doors seem like the Darkness never appeared. But no one was there. The school inside was empty through the cracked glass.
The inside of Jack shattered, his breath becoming jagged as he looked through the glass. He still couldn't believe what the girl had done, for as poorly he had treated her. How will he confront Jamie? Jamie's best friend…gone?
The others came behind him, glancing through the dark glass. Hiccup picked up, with some help so he wouldn't fall over, the shield that made Rapunzel and Jack able to escape, the silver metal gleaming in the frozen moonlight. When Jack turned around, Hiccup handed him the shield, not saying a single word. Jack took the shield slowly, staring at the faded red decal of a dragon on the front. He sighed heavily and slung the trap for the shield over his head to have it hand on his back, his head hung down as he did so. His hands slowly folded into tight fists, the one holding his staff almost snapping it in two. His eyes went up to the rest of the Four, sending a silent message to them. They nodded.
Merida looked up to the sky, hearing the sound of the high pitched roar of a familiar dragon ringing in the distance. "Come on."
They followed the sound as quickly as they could, but since Merida and Rapunzel were helping Hiccup walk, they couldn't go as fast as they wanted to. It was only a matter of time before they saw the tamed Night Fury land some distance away from them. To Hiccup's surprise, Toothless swooped down from the sky and landed right beside the sled, showing that Jamie was on the Night Fury. The landing for them…it was more of a crash rather than a landing. And from the look of Toothless' face, that wasn't the first time either.
"Jamie? " Rapunzel said with her head titled to the side. "What are you…?"
Jamie got off of Toothless, his step wobbly, as if his legs were asleep. "I went to go get some help but…" he made a nervous laugh. "…That part of the plan didn't go so well. We forgot that we couldn't get to Chronos' Tower without the help of a Guardian so…I came back around to here."
Jack's eyes narrowed at Jamie's mouth. He raised an eyebrow. "Are you…missing a tooth?"
"Huh?" Jamie placed a finger in his mouth and came across the gap. "Oh!" he took his finger away from his mouth. "I pulled out a tooth. I'm hoping that Tooth will be able to detect that I did, and since it's only us that are actually moving in the world, she'll know that we're in trouble and bring along the rest of the Guardians to help us."
"That's smart," Hiccup complimented. "I know that Chronos said that we had to get rid of the Negatives ourselves but I don't think that's possible."
"What did you mean by 'we' earlier, Jamie?" Merida asked. "You mentioned that you made a plan with someone…"
Jamie smiled. "Birna thought it up. While she got you guys, I would get the Guardians. But…my part of the plan didn't work so well…like I said." His smile slowly faded as he looked around the Four, not seeing his friend anywhere. "Where's…Birna?"
Jack's eyes drifted to the ground, so did the rest of the Four.
Jamie's eyes drifted over to small silver gleam that shown in the light of the full moon that was mostly hidden by Jack's back. Jamie shakily brought his hand up and pointed at the object. "Wh…what's that…?"
Without saying a single word, Jack slipped the shield off. He held it in his hand tightly and held it up to Jamie's view.
Jamie took a step back, in complete shock. His body started to quiver at the sight of the shield, his pupils shrinking in disbelief and fear. "Wha…? That's Birna's shield…" His eyes snapped up to Jack. "Where is she?"
Jack didn't answer, his eyes glued to the ground. Rapunzel sent Jack a look of sympathy before facing Jamie, approaching him after making sure Merida had a good enough hold on Hiccup. She stopped when Jamie backed away from her movement. When she reached out for Jamie, Jamie took another step back from her. "Jamie…"
Jamie just stared at her, shaking his head slowly. They could see the tears starting to well in his eyes as he shook his head. His intakes of air was becoming jagged and spaced out, shaking even. "W-Where is she…?"
Merida explained gently, "Jamie…yer friend…she's not here…"
"What do you mean…?"
Hiccup's face saddened. "She was helping Rapunzel when…Pitch's darkness was trying to get us. Before she could get out…"
"The doors shut. She was…" Rapunzel found it hard to complete her sentence when she watched Jamie's face deepen in despair. "…Trapped inside. She's…gone, Jamie."
Jamie's eyes widened. "G…gone…?" He repeated in a small voice. His eyes jumped over from person to person. The last one they landed on was Jack, who was still gripping onto the shield in his staff-free hand. Jamie stepped hesitantly to Jack. "Jack…Jack, please tell me…this…this isn't…this isn't true…"
Jack looked up to Jamie slowly, showing his Believer his reddening eyes. Jamie's eyes became wider, disbelief becoming more noticeable within them. He blinked and his collecting tears streamed down. Jack sighed regretfully and held the shield up to Jamie. "I'm…I'm sorry…"
Jamie stared at the shield, his eyes wavering as his mind processed what was happening. The shield shook in his trembling hands. It slipped out of them. Jamie dropped down to the ground onto his knees, slowly curling on himself. "N-no…no…no, no…!" He whispered behind tears, his sobs now audible.
Rapunzel crouched down to Jamie and placed a hand on his back. She jerked when Jamie clung onto her, crying still. She sent Jack a worried glance. Her large green eyes drifted back to Jamie, hugging him back to try to calm him down. "It's okay, Jamie…"
Jamie didn't say anything, unable to. He didn't even notice the project that Birna that he thought would help Hiccup walk had made fall out of his zip-hoody's pocket due his heart-stricken shaking.
Rapunzel noticed it and asked him, "What's that, Jamie?"
Jamie sniffed and glanced over to the object. "…Th-that's something...Bi-Birna made…I-I thought Hiccup could use it t-to help him walk…"
Merida picked it up and studied it before setting Hiccup beside Jamie to put the contraption on his incomplete leg. To Jamie, she asked as carefully as she could, "The lass liked t' make things, didn't she?"
Jamie only nodded, watching her put it on Hiccup. He closed his eyes and sighed heavily as if all the weight of the world just dropped on his shoulders, it turning back into a sob.
Jack rubbed his eyes and looked over to Jamie. It made his heart ache even more, if that were possible. Jack set his staff on the ground and knelt down to Jamie. He slowly clasped his cold hand onto the teen's shoulder, feeling Jamie tense under it. "Jamie…I'm really, really sorry…I…didn't think much of her falling behind back there. But when I saw her trying to get Rapunzel out, I had…to help. She…saw that we wouldn't make it and threw her shield to hold the door open for us. I…I-I bumped it, making the doors close before she…she could get through. I tried to help her but." He made a shameful sigh. "It's my fault, Jamie…I'm sorry. I-I'm so sorry…"
Jamie looked over his shoulder to Jack. He slowly turned out of Rapunzel's hold to face him. He sniffed and whipped his nose, and his eyes, on his sleeve. "You…you tried to help her?"
Hiccup nodded in conformation for Jack. "Yeah. He was beating against the door to get her out, even with his staff. Rapunzel tried to get through, too. Merida and I wanted to help but I couldn't stand by myself so Merida had to stay with me."
Jamie's eyes widened at the new information and returned his attention back to Jack. "Really…?" Jack nodded. Jamie's sad face slowly formed into a small smile, his tears now under his control. He picked the shield off of the ground and looked at the shiny shield, being able to see his redden and tear-stained face and bloodshot eyes. His eyes went back up, staring at Jack. "…I'm glad…that you tried…I know how much you don't like her."
The Four and Jamie's heads shot up at the sound of a cold, quiet laugh. They saw a shadow creep out from the darkness of an alleyway, seeing gold eyes glowing within before disappearing as fast as it came.
Jamie clenched his hands into tight fists, a small growl emitting from his throat. He got up from the ground, the others following him. Merida finished putting the mechanical foot onto Hiccup and helped him stand with the help of Jack and Toothless. He wobbled a bit but he was able, for the first time since the accident, to stand on his own. Jamie hooked Birna's shield onto his arm. "For Birna."
Jack picked up his staff, Merida took off her bow and brought out an arrow, Rapunzel raised up her frying, and Hiccup got on Toothless.
"For Birna."
There's another chapter for you, everyone. And I think the story is getting closer to the end...but...
...I'm thinking of making a sequel. I'm not sure yet, though. Also, I am also thinking about of holding a fan art contest on deviantART but I'm not sure yet. Any thoughts on either of those? You're say means a lot to me. ^-^
Inspiration for this chapter: The song "Lullaby" by Nickelback. (I recommend reading the chapter while listening to the song, I think it adds more meaning to the chapter)
See you guys in the next chapter. Goodbye!
