The Four, Hiccup was on Toothless however, and the last decedent stood back to back to see in all directions. They came closer together when they heard the familiar crackling. Their eyes widened when suddenly, a rushing wave of electrified black sand rolled menacingly around the corner, gushing out of the alley. It swelled as the sand rapidly barreled towards them, eating and crushing the cars that were parked on the streets and swallowing buildings. The sparks that flew out of the large black churning mass made the last of the working street lights zapped the lamps and made them explode, their bulbs shattering and littering the ground before it was consumed by the dark Nightmare Sand.
This was all too familiar to Jamie, the giant wave of black Nightmare Sand coming towards them. He just hoped that happened in the past could happen now. He raised his shield up as he took a few paces forward of the Four, somewhat hiding himself behind it. The sand banged against the shield, pushing him back a ways and making the sand fan over him and the others, like they were under a protective bubble. But that didn't stop him. He pushed through it and with just a small touch, the sand's lack of color burst into gold, making it harmless to him and to the Four. It evaporated from the air, as if it was never there.
Merida pulled her bow's string back with an arrow loaded when she heard a growl of frustration. She felt the backs of the others go against hers, making her fear leave her. When she saw the single glowing red eye go in the dark, she wasn't scared anymore. Not of Mor'du, of Pitch, of Gothel…she was actually ready for them this time. And she could sense that from the others as well, especially Jamie. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, she let go of the arrow.
They heard Mor'du yowl in the shadows in bitter rage. It was followed by the heavy beating of his paws on the pavement. His shape melted out of the shadows, snarling his yellow and sharp teeth. Merida was ready. She fired another arrow at him.
Jack turned to at the sound of galloping hooves, his eyes following the Night Mares come towards them. He brought up his staff and looked down it, as if it were a gun. Ice and frost burst from the crook of the staff, barreling towards the Mares and pulverizing them back into black, yet frozen, dust. He saw the vast sea of them behind where the others once stood, trampling over where their fallen nightmare comrade were. Jack looked over to Hiccup and said, "Think you can thin out the crowd?"
Hiccup rolled his eyes playfully and fastened his new foot into the flight mechanism. "What else am I going to? Stand here?" They rocketed into the sky, flying over the Night Mares before jackknifing back, dive bombing to the Night Mares and firing the blue balls of fire before rocketing back into the dark, frozen night sky.
Rapunzel saw something dash in the corner of her eye. Her eyes widened to see a small gleam of a red dress before it disappeared back into the shadows. But before she could do anything, she heard a distinct roar come from behind her and Jamie. They turned around to see Merida getting cornered by Mor'du, her arrows hardly doing anything. Rapunzel then remembered how she kept him at bay earlier. She threw her hair like a rope, wrapping itself around Mor'du's paw that threatened to strike Merida. She pulled her hair back, Mor'du's paw coming to a stop and slam against the ground. She His red eye glared at her, his yellow teeth glowing in the moon light as he growled. He forgot about Merida and charged at Rapunzel, whose eyes were widening and reeled her hair back as fast as she could so she could use it again.
Jamie gasped and yelled, "Rapunzel!"
Merida aimed for Mor'du as it continued to charge, "Get out of the way!"
But by the way the demon bear was charging at them, they knew they wouldn't be able to get out of the way in time. Jamie removed the solid, but light, metal shield from his arm and threw it like a Frisbee at Mor'du's head. It hit the bear's skull with a hard "thunk". Mor'du stopped in his tracks, dazed by the blow of the metal shield. He shook it off and roared at Jamie, getting on its hind legs and then slamming back down on all fours, his roaring fierce. His head snapped around to Merida when she daringly ran up to the vicious bear and stabbed it in the neck with her arrow. Mor'du bellowed in pain, blood welling around the deeply embedded arrow. Merida hurriedly picked up Jamie's shield and ran over to join them before Mor'du had a chance to swipe at her.
She tossed Jamie his shield that once belonged to his friend. "Good thinkin', Jamie…but won't last forever."
"I know…I just wanted it to get away from her," Jamie's eyes narrowed when he saw the bear shake off its stun and snapped the arrow that was in his neck in half, a small piece of it still sticking out. Its red glowing eye gleamed threateningly along with its growl. Jamie raised his shield. "So…any ideas…?"
"We could try to tie him up with Rapunzel's hair…" Merida suggested as she slowly backed away with the others.
Rapunzel nodded. "We could. But…the last time we did that…" she showed a tiny clump of uneven hair that was brown hidden in her locks. "I lost some of my hair…and I'll lose my power if it gets ripped like that again." But she made a determined look, clutching a fist full of her hair. "But it's okay."
"You sure?" Jamie asked her.
"Uh…I'd appreciate it if you would make your mind up right now…" Merida said behind her locked teeth, drawing another arrow slowly. "He's getting closer…"
As an answer, Rapunzel took two fists full of her hair and whipped it at the bear, the locks crossing over each other and wrapping around the ankles of Mor'du's front paws. With Jamie's help, they yanked back and made the bears paws go under him, making his upper half fall to the ground.
Merida fired a few arrows at the bear, even though they didn't do much damage. She said over her shoulder, "Keep him down!"
They struggled to do just that, the bear was thrashing around; trying to break free, which he did more than once but Rapunzel was able to throw more hair that acted like ropes to keep the beast down. Jamie held her reel her hair back in to assure a bit more that her hair wouldn't rip.
Jamie and Merida jumped when they suddenly heard Rapunzel yelp when they were retracting her hair back. Jamie spun around to see Rapunzel being held against her will by a greying woman in a black cloak and a red dress, her eyes a large grey. There was a poof of smoke and when It cleared, the woman and Rapunzel were gone.
"Rapunzel!" Merida and Jamie yelled in unison.
"Jamie! Go!" Merida told him. "Get her back! I can handle Mor'du on me own!"
