Fuseiseki : Failure

Chapter Sixteen : Getting Lost

...

"I have to go to them." She was throwing things into the bag Asiya had packed up for her what seemed like eons ago. Hilde was standing behind her with her arms crossed, and Relena was practically begging her to change her mind.

"Usagi you haven't completely healed yet..you can't..." She knew her eyes were blazing when she snapped at the girl. Knew the eight pointed star on her forehead was glowing with intensity.

"I can't lose them." She said, her voice breaking. "I can't. Relena." Her voice was pleading now, begging her to understand. "I can't do this again." She clenched her fist over a shirt she had in her hand. Relena was moving closer to her. Hilde looked like if she made a move, she'd tackle her down to keep her there.

The decision was made in a split second, as most of them were when it came to her. She reached for the power that made her, the goddess of stars, smiling sadly when the intensity of the change forced Relena and Hilde to the floor of her room. The wings burst from her back, and her fuku came over her in an instant.

"Gomen Nasai." She whispered. And raised both hands to her face, with one finger over her lips and the rest folded. "Sailor Teleport."

...

Hilde slammed the ground with her fist, and cursed. "Shit. That stupid Girl." Relena put a hand on Hilde's back, after gathering herself from the floor, and stared after the spot where Usagi had stood moments before.

"What do we do?" She asked Hilde, because the act Usagi had just performed had blown her mind. Her pattern of thought had been interrupted as if by a tidal wave.

"Get Milliardo and Noin." Hlde said, and her voice was hard. "Now." Relena didn't try to think about it. She just ran. Down the stairs, trhough the hallway, and into the lobby, where, thankfully, her brother and his companion were seated. It took a moment, to catch her breath. And when she could breathe again, the words came so fast she wasn't sure if Noin or her Milliardo could understand her.

"Usagi went...to the...oh my god." Epic Fail. That was not a sentence.

"Slow down Relena." Milliardo said patiently.

She took a deep breath, and tried again. "Usagi just teleported out of her room." Relena said. "To go and aid the pilots. She refused to wait on them." Another deep breath. Milliardo and Noin were standing.

"Organize a car and the necessary transport to get us to where they are." Milliardo said to Noin. She was gone as soon as he had finished speaking. When she had left, he turned to Relena, laying a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"Relax Imouto." He said, and she looked up at him with eyes that were hard, determined. Like a fire had suddenly flared to life in her being.

"I'm going with you." She said.

Hilde had appeared at the top of the steps. She was dressed in the dark greens of a soldier uniform. A gun was holstered at her side. "So am I."

Milliardo looked for a moment like he was going to argue, but thought better of it at the last second. He knew that look in both of their eyes. If he didn't let them come, they'd find a way themselves.

"Get ready." He said to Relena. she nodded, and hurried back up the stairs to her room, her heart beating much too fast and her brain still frazzled.

...

She'd never tried a Sailor Teleport on her own. It wasn't perfect. She knew she'd landed somewhere close to the pilots. She could feel them at the edge of her mind. Trowa was injured. Hiiro and Duo more so. Wufei seemed agitated, and Quatre was broadcasting unconsciously.

Hiiro and Duo were transformed. She could feel the rise and fall of their planet powers as they fought...something. She focused on that something. It was of Chaos' design. The energy that radiated from it was of the purest black.

She peered down from the branches of the tree her teleport had landed her in, picked a direction, and jumped. She ran through the dense woods of the English forest as if she'd been there before. Nothing on her mind but reaching her friends and her love.

"Not again." She spit as she ran. "Never again."

...

"Terra Sphere." It was a whisper on his lips. He raised his sword and with it came a ball of the earth itself, and with a swing, he sent it flying at their attacker. She whipped at it with her tail and it exploded in a cloud of dust that blocked his vision. He crouched low. His hearing, the feeling of the ground beneath him, it was all accelerated.

He could hear Duo's footsteps. The noise next to him he did not recognize. He ducked and rolled, looking over at the deadly pointed tail that had just missed impaling him. Duo was beside him, swinging his glaive in a swift circle that released a spray of their enemies black blood.

She disappeared into the darkness as the dust started to clear. When it finally had, Duo stood next to him, his breath short, leaning on his glaive with a smile on his dirty face. There was a fresh slash across his chest that Hiiro hadn't seen him receive. It bled little. He himself had cuts up and down the inside of his arms. The things tail was as sharp as a sword, and she knew how to use it.

"Think we scared her away?" Duo asked, then turned, staring off into the darkness. Hiiro wondered at what he was looking at, until he heard the voice.

"We might have." Trowa stepped through the foliage. His shoulder was wrapped crudely. Quatre and Wufei were behind him.

Duo leaned more heavily on his glaive. "Good to see you three." He said. "You are however, late."

"Fashionably so, I'd like to think." Quatre said, with a smile. Duo laughed, wincing only slightly. Hiiro stood from his previously crouched position, and returned his sword to it's sheath. Their enemy had fled it seemed. He scanned for her with an awareness he'd just found. Nothing. Wait... something. On the edge of his consciousness. Something warm, bright. Usagi. He smirked to himself. Good to know he could keep an eye on her when he was far away. He frowned when he realized she was much closer than she should be.

Duo and Quatre seemed to feel it at the same moment, and their eyes all turned northwest. Wufei and Trowa were quick to follow suit, picking up on Usagi's energy signature with their keys glowing dimly.

Hiiro slammed his sword back into it's hilt, and heard instead of saw his comrades transform behind him. When the light of their power had died down, he started running. Maybe a mile before them, there was a flash of light and a sharp cry that echoed through the trees. He ran faster, his friends on his heels.

...

She'd found the enemy first. Or perhaps the enemy had found her. Didn't matter. She had been locked in a furious battle with the thing that called herself Scorpia for longer than she liked. They were evenly matched. Chaos was getting so much better at creating.

She wiped at the cut on her cheek. It was shallow, but was bleeding into her mouth. The taste was bitter and metallic. She felt the flurry of power as the rest of her knights transformed. Felt them coming for her. Didn't know if she should be relived or not. She wasn't ready. They weren't ready.

She ducked and rolled a shot from Scorpia's very dangerous tail. It wasn't poisonous. She knew that much only because she'd taken the small cut on her face to make sure. A necessary recklessness. What made Scoripa's tail dangerous was the fact that it was sharp all over, except at the joints. Getting hit full on would be like being cut by a thousand tiny razor blades, and the tip was like a short sword.

"Mars Flame Sniper!" She loosed it on the roll, smirking when it hit home and burned at the demon's hair. Her knights were almost here. She looked up in barely restrained horror when a laugh rang through the quiet forest.

She snapped her wings open, and stood. "Chaos." She spit. And there he was, in front of her. The boy who had called himself Kione was next to him on one side, and on the other, the small girl who mirrored Kione.

"Nice to see you Serenity." He said with a smile. She clenched her fists, her eyes turning as her knights, her friends burst through the foliage to come to her aid, weapons drawn. They weren't ready. Not to fight Chaos. She wouldn't let it end here.

She raised her hands above her head and brought then down. "Silent Wall!" A barrier of dark purple that swirled with her power formed over herself and her enemies, blocking out the Knights. For a moment, just one fleeting moment, she caught eyes with Hiiro, saw the anger and confusion boiling there, and looked away with eyes that were filled with tears. She blinked them away just as quickly.

"Always playing the Hero." Chaos said. "But a smart girl, you always were. Smart and beautiful, and so self-sacrificial. It's endearing."

Duo raised his glaive, swung it at the barrier she'd created hard. It bounced off. She heard him cry out to her, but could not look at him. They weren't strong enough to fight Chaos. She wasn't strong enough. Not without the Ginshinzou. If they survived... at least this world had a chance.

"I'll make you a deal." Her head was held high, as she listened to his cool voice.

"I don't make deals with the devil." She said. He laughed. Her eyes burned with her hate for him.

"This one, I think you shall be interested in." He smiled. "Their lives for yours." Her eyes widened. The world had gone quiet. "Come with me. Give yourself to me... and I shall leave your pets to fight another day."

Her heart was beating so loud she was sure everyone could hear it. Where had the cool, calm, Cosmos gone? There was only Usagi right now. In a form that belied the fear in her heart. He could do it. He could take them away from her. Or she could say yes, and at the least, they'd live another day.

"You won't touch them?" She asked, tentatively. Trusting Chaos was like trusting a agitated poisonous snake not to bite you.

"I hardly think them worth my time." Chaos said.

The defeat was in her. The acceptance. It still hurt. Like an open wound. But this was the only way. It was the only way. She raised her hands slowly, and lowered them, bringing them quickly to the left. The barrier moved, to encompass her knights. Duo was screaming at her. Hiiro was seething. Wufei was barely containing his anger, and Trowa was holding a shaking Quatre. With power she didn't know she had, she pushed herself at their minds, and broke the barriers between them like glass.

*Gomen Nasai Minna.* The tears were in her eyes again. She could feel Chaos moving closer to her. *I love you.* Her eyes locked with Hiiro's when she said this, pure silver on raging prussian blue. *Don't stop fighting for this world, please. And don't come for me.*

And then Chaos' hands were on her, and she broke the link for fear he could hear, for fear it would give him entrance to them. She turned into his chest like a child, letting the form of Cosmos drop, and with it, the barrier that held them away from her. There was a flurry of attacks that flew towards them.

Chaos blocked them with a laugh, and raised into the air, with Kione and the small girl at his side, and herself tucked snugly in his arms. She got one last look at him, before everything shifted, and insane in her sorrow, she succumbed to darkness.

...

"Usagi!" It was harsh cry, one that burned his throat with the intensity of it. She couldn't, she wouldn't. Just hand herself to him? They could fight. Fighting was better than losing her. "Usagi!" He threw an attack out of pure instinct at the monster that held her in his arms. Felt rather than saw his comrades do the same. It did nothing. Chaos batted their attacks away as if they were Cat Toys.

When they were gone, when he could not see them anymore, the scorpion tailed woman stepped from the shadows with a smile on her face. "Master is so pleased." She said. "I think I will be welcomed home with the utmost love if I get rid of you now."

"Fuck you." He swung his glaive with a force that made every bone in his body creak, and severed her head. She exploded with a poof of red dust, blowing away on the wind. His throat hurt. His breath came out in short gasps. When he could cling to rational thought, his eyes turned to Hiiro, and widened.

He was ablaze with color, green and cherry blossom pink. It swirled around him like a tidal wave crashing in on itself, over and over again. His eyes...they were empty. Devoid of any of the emotion Usagi had worked so hard to put there.

"Hiiro..." He said it softly. He did not answer. Didn't even look his way. Just stared at the space where Usagi had been, moments before, seething.

Duo looked at Quatre. He was on the ground, with his own arms wrapped around himself, his face contorted in sadness and pain. Trowa was trying to comfort him with hands that clenched and unclenched randomly. His eyes were nothing Duo could explain. Wufei was gripping his sword in his hand so tight that his knuckles were white, staring, as Hiiro was.

He understood. The powerlessness. After all they had gone through. All they had promised. He'd still taken her away. They weren't strong enough to fight him, and she knew it. She'd sacrificed herself to keep them safe. He let the glaive in his hand drop, and dropped to his knees, punching the ground so hard the earth cracked beneath him. He didn't want to be safe. He wanted his tiny Imouto back. The one who was so frail and so strong. The one who's love encompassed everything it touched.

"What are we supposed to do?" He said it through gritted teeth, his voice hoarse.

"We get her back." Hiiro said. And then he raised his arms, slamming them back down to Earth in a sudden crouch. "Teleport."

...

"Jesus." Relena didn't usually use the word. Didn't even necessarily believe in the deity, but getting surprised like this twice in one day tended to bring allot out of her that didn't usually happen.

The men in front of her were in full battle gear. Wufei still had his sword drawn. And she was not so clueless that she did not see Usagi was not with them. Nor was so clueless not to guess something was wrong. The tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. It was a tension she hadn't felt in a long time. Not since Zero had detonated with Hiiro inside. "Duo?"

He was the closest to her. She'd been the only one in the room when they had appeared, but she could hear rapid footsteps approaching.

The braided pilot looked at her with eyes that could only be described as a bouquet of burning violets. "He took her." He said it through gritted teeth, and Relena's heart dropped in her chest. Milliardo was behind her then, and Noin, and Sally and Catherine. What should have been a happy welcoming party was instead a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.

She looked at Hiiro, and her knees went weak. The air around him was icy. His forehead blazed with the symbols of the Earth and Moon. His eyes were...dead. Her heart felt like it was clenched in a vice. She wanted to go to him, but knew she wasn't who he wanted to hold right now.

Quatre looked like he was in physical pain. His arms were wrapped around himself like he would never let go, his eyes closed tightly. Trowa didn't look much better. It was the first time in all the years she'd known him...that he looked lost. Wufei just looked angry, so angry he was bathing in the raw emotion.

"She gave herself up for us." Quatre whispered it, so she had to strain to hear him. it just made her feel worse. His voice was broken. "We couldn't even touch him." His eyes opened, and they were dull, unseeing. "We couldn't do anything."

"We will." Hiiro's voice scared her in it's intensity. "We regroup and we find her."

Milliardo cut in with a calm voice, trying to understand. "Did Chaos take Usagi?"

Quatre was the only one that moved, a slow nod. She saw her brother tighten out of the corner of her eye. Shifting into soldier mode in an instant.

"I...I..." There was a feeling building in her that hurt more than anything she remembered. A loss of light that seeped into her like acid through every pore. It hurt to see them like this. Hurt to know the sunny girl that had captured all their hearts in so little time wasn't there to smile at her. Because though a part of her still resented Usagi for taking Hiiro away, a bigger part reveled in the joy she gave him. The joy that was no longer there. "I can't." She whispered this, and ran. The tension in the room was suffocating her.

She ran to the front of the house, threw open the bay doors at the Veranda, and ran into the gardens. She didn't stop until her legs could take no more, collapsing on the ground and clenching her hands in the soft dirt. Her breath ragged, she looked up.

The Moon was bright and full. Her eyes were stuck on it. There was no power in her to look away. As she watched, a light descended from it, and still she sat, frozen.

...

"Don't look so sad Serenity." He lifted her chin with a finger, and smiled his devilishly good looking smile. "It's unbecoming of such a beautiful face."

She ripped her gaze from his, preferring to look down at the floor. The place he'd taken her to was cold, and dark. The clothes she'd been wearing before she'd transformed did little to protect her from such. A simple sundress decorated with dark red roses.

"Serenity." He sounded hurt. She had to give him points for his acting. "Don't be so difficult. The more cooperative you are, the more lives I will spare."

She gasped. Looked up at him with a smile that hurt to force, knew her eyes were dark with hatred. He laughed heartily. "Better." he raised a hand. "Vega."

The girl appeared next to him instantly, bowing. "Yes master?"

"You will take Serenity to her room and get her dressed in something more becoming of my new Queen." Usagi's eyes widened on his. He kept smiling.

She bit down the words she wanted to say and let Vega take her hand, leading her into the darkness of the large compound Chaos and his closest minions resided within. They went down a long hallway, with many doors, and at the very end, before a door that was decorated in such finery it looked misplaced, Vega stopped.

"Your room is here my Queen." She said softly, bowing.

"I am not your Queen." Usagi spit, and threw the door open, slamming it behind her, and leaving the girl behind in the dark. She leaned on the other side of the cold door for support for a moment, her eyes closed. Her heart beat like a steady drum in her ears.

Queen? She would not rule with him, would not fight for him. Giving herself up had been to save her friends and nothing else, and she'd be damned if... She opened her eyes. "Oh." It escaped her mouth with her breath. The room she was in was gorgeous. It was decked in pale white and lush creams. the bed was round, covered in deep blood red. It looked like crushed velvet. On the bed, so closely matched she almost didn't notice it, was a crushed velvet dress.

It was the most exquisite piece of clothing she'd ever seen. She took a few steps toward it. A vanity mirror was at the side of the bed. There was a bathroom beyond it, with no door, and a whirlpool tub. It was as if...he had been waiting. Waiting just for her.

"I was." She jumped at his voice, turned to see him standing behind her. The door had not opened, and she had not spoken aloud. She cursed herself. The surprise had brought her walls down for a moment. She threw them back up, glaring at him when he laughed. She hated how the sound made her insides stir. Everything about him was beautiful and dark.

"I see you don't appreciate my invasion." She gasped when his hands wrapped themselves around her waist from behind. She could see their reflection in the mirror of the silver Vanity. Her eyes were filled with disgust. His were filled with mirth. It disturbed her how alike they were to her long lost mesume. Just the slightest bit darker, tinged with bright orange and black. The sunset to her sunrise. "It amuses me," He purred into her ear, making her shiver. "How you distance yourself from me. Do you not see how perfect we look together?"

She was still looking in the mirror. It was uncanny, how they fit together. This had always been true. There had been many enemies in the past after not only her power, but her love. It was something she was used to. But Chaos? She'd never thought. Only knew his hatred for her.

"I know what you're thinking." He said, and she checked the walls she'd so hastily built to block him, just in case. He wasn't reading her mind as far as she could tell, but his next words shook her to the core. "Where did my hatred go for the dear Serenity?" He stared into her eyes through the reflection of the mirror, his hands shifted over her hips. She wanted to run, wanted to cringe, but kept her face straight. "The truth is..." His hands were at her neck suddenly. "My hatred for you still runs deep." She gasped for the air that would not come. Saw the red come to her face, her eyes open and panicked. He let go when her vision started to blacken around the edges. "As deep as yours runs for me." He leaned down, kissed her neck with lips that were perfect and soft. "And that is why I'll make you my Queen. Why I will hold you as my prize until you see the end of this Earth. Make you watch as I slaughter your Knights, and your precious new love. Just as I did before." He let her go, and she brought her hands to her chest, laid them over her wounded heart. "Get dressed."

When he was gone, the same way he'd come, she moved numb feet towards the bed, and collapsed on top of the smooth velvet. The tears did not come. The shock was too great. She had been wrong. She had been weak. She had thought giving herself to him would save them. She had only signed the death warrant of this world, and all she loved. And he would make her watch, standing by his side.

It was then that she decided, no matter the power he had, no matter if it killed her, she would take him down. With or without the Ginshinzou, she would end this. He was underestimating her, and in doing so, had put her in the perfect position for a checkmate.

*Minna.* She thought it, for fear he could hear her. *Don't come for me. I'm going to end this. I'm going to end him. Gomen Nasai.*

...

"Relena Peacecraft." The voice was like the chime of heaven's bells. The figure that stood before her was not corporeal. She was a ghost of a ghost, see through, but beautiful all the same. Her hair was a bright silver, her eyes a caring grey blue.

"Usagi?" She asked. Because the similarity was uncanny. The woman smiled.

"No. Not Usagi." She said. "Usagi is my daughter. And so, in some ways, are you." Relena could not speak. This was all too much.

"I am Queen Selenity, of The Moon Kingdom. The Kingdom Serenity, or Usagi as you call her, was a Princess of so long ago." Relena found her voice.

"Why are you here?"

Queen selenity smiled softly. "Because right now, you are the only one who can save my daughter, and with her, this world."

...

I know, I know... Whhhaaaat? You will find, should you continue, that Relena will play her important role as well. Will our new Knights find a way to get their Princess back? It all remains to be seen. Will Usagi survive her time with Chaos? Find out next time. Ja,
