Gibbs enters the Abby's lab with a cup of coffee in one hand, and cafpow in the other. As he crosses the threshold he hums to himself. Abby spins around from the computer, and turns towards him. He sits a cafpow in front of her. She furrows her brow, and remains silent.
"What have you got for me Abs?"
"Why are you humming?"
"It's just a nice day."
"Gibbs have you looked outside the window today? We have gotten three inches of rain today."
"I know."
"Why are you in such a good mood?"
"I can't be in a good mood?"
"You can I am just questioning your motives."
"Don't worry about it."
"Whatever it is that you're keeping from me will eventually come to the light, so you might as well just tell me now."
"What's in it for me?"
"My undying love and affection."
"I already have that."
"I am not telling you what I have until you tell me what's going on."
"Abby can we please just focus on the case?"
"No. You have been different lately."
"No, I haven't," he argues.
"Since that case where that marine general was accused of murdering her husband."
"Abby…"
"I heard that the two of you had chemistry."
"Can we please talk about this later?"
"Something happened, and ever since then you have acted depressed."
"No, I haven't."
"Then today you come in here and you're humming."
"It is a free country."
"Are you aware that you were humming Brahms's lullaby?"
"I guess that I didn't realize."
"Spill. Who is having a baby?"
"Abby what do you have for me?"
"Isn't the general pregnant? McGee mentioned that she was pregnant."
"Abby…" he stamps his foot impatiently.
"Is she having a baby?"
"Yes, can we move on?"
"So it's true?"
"What's true?"
"You saw her today."
"Where do you get your information?"
"DiNozzo. He saw you leaving with her."
"Abby did you get a CODIS hit or not?"
"I will tell you as soon as you tell me who is having a baby."
He sighs in frustration, "I am."
"You are what?"
"Having a baby."
"You're pregnant?"
He furrows his brow, "I am not going to give birth to it."
She starts laughing hysterically.
"Why is that funny?"
"Gibbs you really got me. You really sold it, too. I feel like such a sucker."
He stares at her blankly. Her smile quickly dissipates.
Her eyes widen, "You were being serious?"
He nods in confirmation.
"Are you telling me that you are responsible for the bun in General MacKenzie's oven?"
"If that is how you want to put it."
"Are you being serious right now? I can't tell."
"Yes, I can assure you, I am being serious."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"You are the first person that I have told."
"Why am I just hearing about this now?"
"Because I only found out today."
"You just found out she was pregnant today?"
"I just found out that it was mine today."
"Really?"
"Yes. Can we talk about the match you found in CODIS now?"
"No," she shakes her head, "How does this news make you feel?"
"Old," he admits.
"Are you nervous?"
"I am walking away now," he turns for the door.
"Wait," she begs.
He pivots in her direction.
"What?"
"One more question."
"What?!" He arches his eyebrows.
"How are you feeling?"
"What do you mean?"
"How are you feeling about all of this?"
"Concerned, I guess. Abby I haven't thought about being someone's parent in a long time. It is an idea that I am certainly going to have to get used to."
"I understand. I already sent the details of the CODIS match to McGee."
"Thanks."
He stands in his basement sanding wood. He hears footsteps, and looks up. The figure stops next to him. Without a word he pulls out a stool. She takes a seat.
"What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to check in, I guess," she admits.
"I don't think that's necessary," he argues.
"I disagree, gunny. I just told you that I'm pregnant with your baby."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" He puts down his sanding block.
"I was just as shocked as you were when I found out," she reveals.
"Mac, you should have told me."
"I didn't know what to do. I am a single mom to a little girl whose father just died. I was working crazy hours, and quite frankly I never considered having another child. I was completely caught off guard when I found out. I have to be honest, I wasn't sure about what I wanted to do."
"You could have been up front with me, and just told me that."
"I am sorry that I didn't tell you sooner."
"Why did you decide to tell me now?"
"Because it's not fair to anyone involved for your not to be offered the opportunity to be part of your child's life."
