When he heard Arthur Pendragon clapping like mad and shouting "I do believe in fairies!" he thought it would be hilarious to just listen for a while, keeping his eyes shut and body slack. But as the shouts quickly dissolved into desperate pleas and tears splashed on his face he regretted that petty act of revenge.
"Arthur..." He gazed up at his distraught friend whose eyes were immediately drawn to him.
"Merlin?"
"Hey." The servant smiled and was soon engulfed in the royal's tight embrace.
"I'm sorry, so sorry..."
Merlin patted his back and murmured reassurances as Arthur repeated his apology over and over, hands gripping the younger man's shirt as if he would never let go – until a knock sounded on the door.
Arthur froze.
"Sire?"
"Sorry, just me!" Merlin called, hoping the guard wouldn't open the door.
…
"And that's why they call you an idiot..." the guard muttered, voice and footsteps moving down the corridor.
Merlin frowned, then looked back to Arthur who was still stuck in place, unyielding even as the servant squirmed in his arms.
"Arthur?"
Somehow the hug constricted even further, though no sound issued from his friend.
Guess I'll just stay here, then.
