Okay, just so you know updates will be slow this year as I have begun my A-Levels and they are my priority but I will try to update every two weeks or perhaps week :) Cheers for reading this far!
The darkness slowly took away any sense of time. Pain coursed through my body. My head spun. I bit down on my bottom lip resisting the urge to scream. Pins and needles laced my arms and around my eyes. It felt like I was burning alive, the serum flooding my veins.
Sharon... My best friend. What had I done? I don't know how long I'd been like this but the pain was only getting worse. My chest wound hadn't healed, my wounds on my legs and arms still bleeding. Why wasn't the serum working?
The bullets. The answer was obvious now that I'd thought about it. They needed to be removed before anything could happen, before my skin could sew itself back together. And then reset itself by me dying. It had happened only once before... I couldn't remember why... I just knew who had killed me: HYDRA.
Steve had gone with Sharon's body to the lab along with Bruce and Natasha. Everyone else sat stony faced in the basement - watching me. Well, some of them were glaring at me.
Thor sat with a ice pack against his face from where I'd hit him earlier. Vision and Wanda were in a deep discussion probably about what on earth I had been thinking. Clint and Sam watched me both of their expressions the same - shocked, questioning, sad - they had trusted me and I had broken that trust completely. Fury was the one who glared - Coulson reading by his side - just one of Fury's eyes was unnerving I dreaded to think what his glare would be like with two. Stark sat with Bucky, both of them looking over paperwork and maps. Why?
I sat in the corner of the room, cradling my arm. I didn't open my eyes that much, only to observe every so often what was happening in the room. I didn't move. I don't know why I'd moved from the bed in the first place... Laying down it felt vulnerable and made me feel even more helpless than I already was. Here on the floor, with the cover of the bed I had some sort of shield from the judgement of those around me, from those who didn't know.
"Did you trust her?" I looked over to Fury who was questioning Bucky. Bucky didn't answer, he kept working with Stark. His blue eyes frantically searching the paperwork in front of him. A phone was on the table next to him. Who had he been calling?
The lights stung my eyes, made my head spin. Bile rose in my throat and I felt light-headed.
"Did you know she wasn't herself, that she barely knew who she was?" Fury kept his gaze on Bucky, unblinking.
Bucky's hair fell forward into his eyes as he nodded his head once.
"How could you just let her waltz in?" Stark was walking towards Bucky, anger flashing in his eyes. "She was a bitch in the first place and now look, I said she couldn't be trusted! Why did you let her in?" Stark shoved Bucky.
Bucky didn't move. His left arm tensed, his blue eyes darkening. "How? Because she was the one who treated me like a normal person, she didn't judge me for my past or my arm, like all of you. Why did I let her in? Because she trusted me and so I trusted her. I've known her a long time."
Everything he had just said was the truth, no word of a lie had left his room was even quieter than it was before. What were they doing? I swear they were working together...
"Of course you could trust her, you're not a full man!" Tony went to shove Bucky again. "You killed my parents! You killed my mom!"
Bucky grabbed Stark's throat. "Don't, Tony."
"She's a killer, she's always been a killer. She's always been bad. She wasn't a puppy for you to take in and make it good again," Stark snapped. "Sometimes people don't need saving because they can't be saved, Barnes. Sure the Cap brought you back from the brink with the help of T'Challa but what about her? Huh? She's never been good, she never will be good. Some people... Some just don't change because they can't."
Bucky lifted Stark, glaring at him. No one moved, waiting to see whether the Winter soldier would make an appearance.
I tried not to flinch at Stark's words. They were harsh but as most people say: the truth hurts the most.
"And you are a good person? The way you've treated women and acted before?" Bucky let go of Stark's throat letting him fall to the floor. "You're nothing but a man in a suit, take that away you're just an arrogant, far too intelligent bastard with a dodgy beard."
I turned away from them. It was my fault they were pain was easing, but I was still bleeding. I sighed, closing my eyes. My leg throbbed, the floor underneath my leg sticky. I'd lost so much blood that I could have just imagined the entire argument that the two in front of me had just had.
"Give me your arm, doll." Blue eyes were in front of me. Bucky.
I blinked. "What was that all about?"
Bucky shrugged, holding out his right hand. He was kneeling in front of me, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up. Blood stained the clothes he wore - my blood. "I had to get in here somehow. It was Stark's idea - none of it was true."
"Some of it was," I whispered. "What he said about me..." I tore my gaze away from him, looking out at Stark arguing with Fury and the others.
"You gonna give me your arm or just sit there not healing." Bucky scratched his head, brunette locks falling across his cheekbones. "Me and Stark were trying to figure out how you weren't dead yet. The serum is somehow making you produce more blood and keeping you alive so you can get the bullets out. Which is what I need to do." Blue eyes blinked at me again. Bucky's eyebrow arched. "Well, doll?"
I lifted my arm, wincing. "Don't make too much of a mess, I still have a chance at America's Top Model next year."
Bucky ripped my sleeve. "Doll, I don't even know what that is."
"I forgot Senior citizen over here," I laughed. Bad idea. I coughed, doubling over. It definitely hurt to laugh, I knew that much. A metal taste filled my mouth. Blood. Not good.
"I'll help." It was Bruce."Nice shot, Barnes," Bruce chuckled, taking out an antiseptic wipe. Both of them blocked me from the other Avenger's views.
I gritted my teeth as the wipe made contact with my skin, stinging.
Bruce raided around in a green bag before setting up a machine. He wiped my good arm with an antibacterial wipe before putting a needle into my arm. He was going to take my blood now. The blood bag was on a machine, already swaying. "This will take ten minutes. Hopefully it will take longer to calm Tony down. Distract the others."
"How much are you taking?" I asked, watching the doctor work.
"I'm taking four hundred and seventy millilitres to be precise, the little you gave her earlier has already repaired most of her internal damage, a little more blood and her heart should begin beating again." Bruce got out some tweezers and proceeded to take out the bullet from my other arm. "And now for the fun part."
I gritted my teeth, wincing at the pain. "Are you not going to give me an anaesthetic? A painkiller?" I hissed.
Bucky held my arm as Bruce sewed my wound shut. "Bruce can't while you're having blood taken. It'll taint your blood for Sharon."
"Since when did you become a doctor?" I looked to Bucky who wore a lopsided grin, a chuckle escaping his lips. I glared at him. "This isn't funny, this hurts like a bit-"
"No, you'll be fine." Bruce cut the thread of the stitch. "Your leg, Zoe."
"You won't be able to cut them they're leather." I shook my head as he bandaged my arm.
I heard my jeans rip as my leg was exposed. I glared at Bucky before looking down to my leg. Blood was everywhere. Everything started spinning. I leant my head back on the glass. "Seriously? How did you even rip leather?"
"What can I say? I was the Winter soldier, I have a metal arm I may as well use it for something useful." Bucky held my leg whilst Bruce repeated the same sewing process. No painkillers, no nothing.
I rolled my eyes. "Wow, kink master over here now using his metal arm to rip women's- Ow." Bruce had pulled the bandage rather tightly on my leg. Most likely on purpose to shut me up.
"The bullet in your chest, I need you to lie down please." Bruce was getting out more tweezers and stitches. I did as he said as he attached heart monitors to my chest. His scissors easily cut through my shirt.
I touched the glass with my finger. I could shatter it, but I wouldn't.
"Sharon's been classified as dead. HYDRA will know now." Bucky was kneeling by my head now, knees on either side of my face. God damn, those thigh muscles... Excuse me, what now? I was definitely blaming that last thought on a lack of blood.
I looked up at Bucky. "I know, I was there. I was the god damn one who shot her, I knew what I was doing." The anger I had for myself had shone through towards Bucky.
Bruce touched a scalpel to my chest. "Bucky, take her arms above her head. Zoe, bite down on this." Bruce gave me a gum shield while Bucky held my arms down. Why did I get the feeling this was going to hurt, a lot?
"Steve's furious." Bucky's metal arm was cool on my blistering skin. The serum was starting to work better now, my bullet free wounds tingling.
"Good job I'm in here then." I tapped my thumb against his hand. And then I dug my nails into his hands. Bucky hissed. I bit down on the mouth guard. Bruce had begun his operation. It hurt so much. I wanted so much to scream, to kick, to move. I kept Bucky's blue gaze, trying as hard as possible not to seem like I was in pain. A pressure blossomed in my chest. I couldn't breathe. I stopped squeezing Bucky's hands. I closed my eyes.
"Bruce!" Bucky snapped, holding my hands tighter. "Stay with me, doll."
"Slippery little thing," Bruce muttered before the pressure on my chest disappeared. I could breathe now.
Something was removed from my arm. The needle. They had the blood. "Put her on the bed." Bruce.
I was moved, floating almost. Footsteps echoed out of the room whilst I was placed back onto the bed. All the while Bucky never took his left hand out of mine.
The lift chimed. Bruce was on his way to save Sharon. I just had to hold on until he got my blood to her. Everything felt light, my limbs phantom.
"Zoe? Doll, come on say something?" Bucky's left hand was practically crushing my right hand in his left, his voice by my ear.
"James, my hand," I whispered, it's all I could do as the pain ricocheted through my chest.
"Oh right... I'm sorry, Zoe." Bucky went to slip his hand out of mine.
I held Bucky's left hand tighter. "No, don't. I don't want to be alone when... When it happens. When I die." I could feel the fear, the prospect of dying wasn't something easy to think about. It was terrifying. Now I knew exactly how those I'd murdered had felt like right before they died: completely and utterly helpless. Terrified of what lay beyond life. What if there was nothing at all?
Bucky didn't let go of my hand, instead he lifted me again. This time I was in his lap, in his arms. His heartbeat was behind my head - a steady, soothing rhythm. "I'm not going anywhere, I promise, doll." Bucky weakly smiled down at me.
I didn't say anything. I just nodded, holding his hand tighter.
"I'm not going anywhere, I promise, doll." Bucky weakly smiled down at me.
"Don't defend me anymore, Bucky." I couldn't look at him. "I'm not worth it. I never have been even before HYDRA. After all of this is over - whatever happens - don't defend me ever again. Don't let me drag you down with me."
"You're just giving up?" Bucky's heart sped up, his grip on my hand tightening slightly.
"Think of it as giving in. It's over Bucky. I'm a monster." I had to stop him losing the respect the Avengers had for him. He couldn't fall because of me after all of this was done. When I was shipped off to a remote prison never to see daylight again. I couldn't leave him waiting for someone who wasn't going to be coming back. "Don't talk to me again, don't look at me, don't even think about me." To save him I had to break his heart. "Because I won't be talking, looking or thinking about you again. It's over. The Zoe you fell in love with, who loved you, she's gone. She's never coming back, Barnes." I may as well have just ripped my heart out and put it on a platter along with his. What had I done? What was I doing? In my last moments I was breaking the heart of a man who clearly cared about me.
I turned away from Bucky, pulling myself out of his grasp onto the bed. I stared out of the glass. Just moving had brought back the pressure in my chest, like someone was squeezing my ribcage with their fist.
"I know you did it to save my life." Bucky briefly touched my shoulder. "You may be giving up but I'm not, doll. I will get Zoe back, I'll get you back. Besides I thought Becky told you not to do anything stupid before she died." His breath skimmed my ear before he planted a kiss on my head. "Fury will give the signal when Sharon has the blood in her system. Just hold on until then."
I didn't look at Bucky, staring up at the ceiling. "Good." The pain flared. I screamed. The serum was making my skin blister. I had to be on fire right now to be this hot. Yet my skin bore no marks, it wasn't even red.
"What's wrong?" Sam. That was Sam's voice.
"She's dying," Bucky's voice cracked, his hand touching mine.
"Dying?" Sam's voice was by my bedside.
"When Bruce removed the bullet from her chest, something happened. She went down hill..." Bucky mumbled, his hand now in mine. "The bullet must have been blocking blood flow or something."
My heart was practically racing now as if it were going to take off.
"Get Bruce back!" Sam yelled. "She can't die. I don't want her to die. I won't let her die, Barnes. Sure she's a psycho assassin right now but you were one to and Joe you're fine. So she will be too. You've already lost enough, I'm not letting you lose anymore."
The pain had gotten worse, my blood practically boiling now. "B-Bucky?" My voice was too quiet, I wanted it to be stronger. "I'm sorry, I couldn't be who you wanted me to be - the Zoe you fell in love with."
"You never had to be anything for me, doll." Bucky squeezed my hand. The familiar pulse that I'd been trying to ignore ignited my skin.
I opened my eyes, watching the man who looked down at me as if I was the most valuable thing in the universe.
"Just seeing you was enough for me, even when you came out of the lift on the first day and you had no clue who I was it was enough. It was enough just to see your face, to see those beautiful green eyes of yours. You promised me you'd come back to me in Russia and you did - that's all I can ask, Zoe."
A knock sounded on the door. "It's done." Fury.
It was time. I couldn't leave him heartbroken, not like this, he'd been through enough. "I love you Barnes, old me, new me, any me - I get the feeling I'll always love you." My voice wasn't loud - it was barely a whisper - but I knew Bucky had heard. A single, solitary tear slid down the bridge of his nose and landed on my cheek. "Goodbye, soldier." The pressure in my chest and the heat in my body reached an agonising climax before it stopped. My heart stopped pounding in my ears. Everything became dark. The pressure of Bucky's hand in mine disappeared.
"Zoe! Doll, come back!"
"We work for a bigger cause, the world has a disease only HYDRA can cure." Andrew - the current leader of the gang I was in - had taken me into the alleyway beside the warehouse the gang was based in. "I thought you should be the first to know." His left breast shone with the badge of HYDRA - a skull with tentacles. Real scary I know...
"I'm not being some part of an octopus worship group, Andrew. I don't even like seafood, unless you count fish fingers which I don't even think are real fish." I twisted the dagger in my hand, leaning against the warehouse wall. Nineteen years old and I already had more than fifty kills to my name. "I'll just leave." I turned on my heel, walking away from the deranged man in front of me.
I stumbled backwards, Andrew's fist buried in my hood as he yanked me backwards. "If you leave we'll kill your sister. You're the reason this gang is feared I'm not letting you leave, bitch." His breath smelt of alcohol. His other hand had moved to his gun holster. No.
I didn't even think I just drove the dagger into his neck. Red slowly trickled down his throat. I gripped his jacket, his face inches from mine.
Andrew's brown eyes worriedly searched my face. "You bitch."
"You would have lived if you'd have feared me, Andrew. You almost forgot that I will always be the bad guy." I let his body fall to the floor crumpling in the rubbish scattered on the alleyway floor.
"You will make a brilliant soldier, Miss Frost." The man who followed the voice out of the shadows had begun to age - a few strands of his hair a silvery strawberry blonde yet his eyes were an uncomfortable piercing blue. He wore a blue shirt and tailored trousers, most likely he'd just come from work to find me here.
I bent down to retrieve my dagger, wiping the blood on the deceased's shirt. I never took my eyes off of the man, watching him closely. "And you are?"
"I'm someone who can rid you of the ties to this gang. Alexander Pierce." The man took another step towards me, holding out his hand to me.
I straightened up, holding the blade to his throat. "What's the catch? There's always a catch with you people, especially men in suits. Not to be sexist of course."
Pierce's hand fell to his side. He laughed, shoulders shaking and his eyes crinkling at the sides. "There is a catch, yes. Have you heard of S.H.I.E.L.D?"
I kept my hand steady, watching Pierce. He didn't seem scared at all. He seemed like a man who knew he was going to get what he wanted. "Yes. A powerful organisation or so I've heard. They've come looking for me a few times."
"I want nothing more than their downfall, Miss Frost and with your help I believe it will be possible. But they'll try to stop you, they'll hunt you down."
"No." I stepped back from Pierce, shaking my head. "I'm not picking fights with people like that, those things tend to end with prison or death."
Pierce remained where he stood. He slipped his hands into his pockets casually. "Andrew spoke of HYDRA which is where I'm from. We're more powerful than S.H.I.E.L.D, I can grant you immunity, means and protection for your sister once you leave the gang."
"If I join HYDRA." I shook my head again. "I'm alright, thanks. Now if you could leave me alone I'd appreciate it. I need to leave before Andrew's cronies turn up and get upset."
"You will be HYDRA's eventually, Miss Frost." Pierce turned on his heel, walking away. "You'll join willingly but when you see me again you won't remember me."
I laughed. "What? You're not going to threaten me?"
Pierce stopped, calling over his shoulder. "When the time comes, I won't have to. You'll have nothing left, you'll be indebted to me."
"Bullshit."
"We shall see, Miss Frost, we shall see. I know as well as you do that you'll do anything for your sister." Pierce nodded at me, giving me a small smile. "Hail HYDRA."
I watched him walk away. A man who could protect my sister, make sure she was safe. After all I'd done to her it was the least I could do. "Wait." I stepped towards the man in front of me. "I want out of this gang but more importantly Rebecca has to be safe. Tell me what I have to do and I'll do it. Anything, just name it. But if my sister gets even so much as a bruise under your so called protection - which she can't find out about - I'll hunt you down and make you wish you were dead."
Pierce turned around slowly. The warehouse lights glinted on the puddles around him making them appear red. "That's what I like to hear. I know that wasn't an empty threat, Miss Frost."
"Get on with it, Pierce," I growled, twisting the dagger in my grip.
"I need you to kill someone, Miss Frost. No questions. No mess. And then the deal will be done, but only when they are dead."
"Who?" I tucked my dagger into my pocket.
"A child."
A nauseating feeling swept over me - ending a young life was never easy. What would Becky think? What kind of person would it make me?
"Well, Miss Frost? I have places to be and other deals to make, I can't wait around here forever." Pierce stepped towards me. His hand was red under the lights, his palm outstretched towards me. "Five. Four. Three. Two. One." Pierce cocked an eyebrow at me.
"Hail HYDRA." I nodded, taking his hand in mine and shaking it. "What about S.H.I.E.L.D, sir?"
"I believe you have a friend who works there, she'll overlook what you're doing like she always has." Pierce nodded. How did he know about Sharon? And why did I get the feeling that I had just entered a game I had no chance of winning...
It was like breaking through the surface of water after holding your breath for too long. Air rapidly filled my lungs. My heart - I heard it stumble twice before it began to beat a strong rhythm, increasing in speed. Every inch of my skin was humming, I felt like I'd slept for a hundred years and as a result of it I was ready for anything. Yet I felt nothing, no emotions. The serum must have reset me when I came back to life.
"Buck, I think she's come back." Sam, that was Sam's voice.
"Are you sure?" Bucky's voice seemed rough and close. A pressure was on my right hand - a tight grip that was almost painful. Bucky - it was his hand holding mine.
Sharon. Her name hit me like a freight train. She had to be alive.
All eyes were on me as I sat up. Bad idea. Everything spun. Pain ricocheted through my chest. I lay back down, focusing on taking even breaths.
Sam leant forward on his knees, looking down at me. "Thank God I got you back."
"Please tell me you didn't kiss me," I groaned. Everything still spun but I didn't care. I had to get to Sharon I had to know if it had worked. If everything I'd done hadn't been for nothing.
"God no! I did chest compressions. You're welcome by the way." Sam laughed, stepping away from the bed.
I looked to Bucky. His eyes were already on me - drinking in my face, unblinking. "Don't do that again, doll."
"I knew I'd come back." I shrugged, wincing as I sat up, Bucky's hand still in mine. The pain was already gone in my chest. My body hummed with electricity, adrenaline. I was ready to fight, to run, to do anything.
"Mmm..." Bucky whispered, leaning closer to me. His lips touched the corner of my mouth - a soft, passionate touch that lasted only a few seconds. His breath grazed my ear. "Do you think it worked for Sharon?"
"I need to find out," I whispered back.
Bucky moved away from me, nodding his head. "I'll help you."
"Thank you," I mumbled, watching both Bucky and Sam walk away from me. It was infuriating that I could barely remember what the veteran in front of me meant to me.
They both spoke to Fury before going to their different seats.
I sat, watching Fury, all pain now gone from my limbs. I was more than alive right now.
Fury entered the room, his footsteps heavy. "You gonna sit there and grieve all the time I'm here?" He snapped. "That is if you care. You gonna plead not guilty?"
"To which crime?" I asked, the wall suddenly fairly interesting.
"The one where you murdered your best friend after gaining her trust." Fury didn't speak particularly loudly. He sat beside my bed, his one good eye scanning my wounds. "What did HYDRA do to you that made you do that?" His voice dropped to almost a whisper.
"I was only asking which crime since I've committed more than one villainous offence." I shrugged, moving to sit next to Fury. My back was now to the others. "And as for what HYDRA did? I know Coulson would have told you."
"Do you feel nothing?" Fury looked to me, brown eyes staring down at me. "Do you have no emotions?"
"Any." What can I say? I was a grammar snob.
"You think now is the time to be correcting grammar?" The bed shook as Fury's fist connected with it.
"You think now is the time to be lecturing her about murder?" Bucky stood in the doorway, his gaze on Fury. "She killed Sharon, it's a bit late." Bucky had walked over to the cell without me even noticing.
"Barnes, I have nothing against you so stay out of this," Fury's voice changed, he was sympathetic. "Going for guilty?" Fury looked back at me.
"Not guilty." I kept Fury's gaze, everyone in the room next door had fallen silent. Even Bucky stood not making a sound.
"You know I think orange will suit you, highlight those green eyes of yours," Fury's voice dripped with sarcasm, his tone clipped as he leant closer to me.
"I've always wanted a new onesie." I turned away from Fury's glare.
Sharon. I needed to get to her. I needed to know if the serum had worked.
"I'm taking you out of here." Fury gripped my arm, his voice by my ear now. "When you get the chance get upstairs and find Sharon. You should be there when she wakes up. Just run, I'll have Stark take care of the rest."
I nodded. "Thank you... I think."
Fury dragged me into the middle of the basement. I struggled against his grip, trying my best to make it look realistic. I thought my performance was worthy of an Oscar anyway. "Let's see how tough you are now." Fury let go of me, sitting back down. "She died and then came back - they say survivors guilt is the worst." He nodded once - a slow movement that nobody would have seen because everyone was looking at me.
Well this was awkward. No weapons. I was completely vulnerable. And barely clothed... Dammit.
The lift. The lift was close. I began to walk towards it. What's the worse that could happen?
"Do you want me to shoot you again?" Fury had a hand on his gun.
"I want to see Sharon." I kept walking not bothering to look at Fury again.
Fury laughed. "Why? She's dead."
I pulled my sleeve up and pointed to my arm. My skin had no trace of a scar, of being penetrated by a bullet. "I mean I should have died from being shot in the chest but here I am, alive. I injected her with my blood, I want to see if it worked. I need to know if it worked, she is my best friend, not was because she can't be gone. Sharon can't be... Dead."
Bruce stood up, running a hand through his brown locks. "I don't see why not."
"No." Fury shook his head at me. I guess he had to play the part of being the one to stop me even though it was his idea to set me free in the first place.
"Yes." I stepped towards Bruce.
A gun clicked by my head. Who was that? I looked to see Tony. "Back in the cell please, Miss Frost."
I raised an eyebrow at Tony. I swear Fury had said he knew about getting me to Sharon...
"Hit me." Tony mouthed rather quickly. So he did know.
Okay, I'm not rash. I'm not stupid. Okay, I may be slightly crazy... But the only way to save see Sharon was to get into the lift. But how? And who would stop me? I mean sure Iron Man and the Winter Soldier were on my side but I still had Wanda and Vision to contend with.
I smirked. I knew how I was going to get to the lift. I caught Tony's hand, catching a pressure point, and taking his gun.
Stark smirked, stepping away from me. "Now," he whispered so quietly it could have been interpreted as ow.
I started running for the elevator. I didn't care about Vision, about Wanda. All I cared about was Sharon, I had to see her. I had to know.
Someone crashed into my side.
I landed on my knees, quickly springing up.
Bucky. His blue eyes watched me, curious. He wanted to know what I was doing, why I was going to find Sharon. I didn't have the time to tell him.
I blocked another hit from him, aiming a kick at his side.
He gasped, winded.
Wanda raised her hands. "I can stop you, Zoe. Please don't make this any harder than it has to be."
I froze. Not good.
"No." Vision put a hand on Wanda's shoulder. "I say let her go." Vision winked at me. "I know she won't cause any more damage. She can't, Sharon is already out of this world." He knew. Some how they guy who closely resembled a beetroot standing in front of me knew. Good enough for me.
I started running again.
A shot sounded, then a ping. It had hit my right leg.
A bullet grazed my arm.
I kept running. I had to get to Sharon.
Sam raised a gun and fired.
I ducked, running faster.
"Stop!" Bucky was running by my side. Whether he was yelling at me or those shooting I didn't know.
The lift opened revealing Steve. No. His eyes flashed with anger before he leaped for me.
I rolled to the side, running into the lift and hitting the button. The doors didn't close soon enough as Bucky leapt in with me.
He grabbed my wrists and forced them to my sides as he pushed his body against mine trapping me in the elevator.
"God dammit Barnes, get off!" I hissed, desperately attempting to push him off of me. No luck. Instead Bucky only held me tighter. "Didn't Fury tell you about his plan?"
"No." Bucky's breath rushed onto my face, my eye level at his nose.
"James bloody Buchanan Barnes get off of me," I snapped. "Now."
"Stark?" Bucky called, turning away from me. He was ignoring me that much was obvious.
"Yes?" Echoed from outside.
"Why are the doors still shut?"
"Sir, there appears to be a malfunction. I can have the lift open in an hour." Great, just great Friday. Stupid technology. Or perhaps this was Stark's end of Fury's plan. All I had to do was get out of the lift.
"Bucky?" Steve's voice.
"Steve." Bucky turned to look at the lift doors. I'm not sure what difference it made, but if it made him feel better...
"Don't let her out of your sight, please."
"I won't, I promise." Bucky caught my gaze.
"I'm not making any promises, I'm doing whatever the hell I want." I tensed my right leg, kicking Bucky.
He gasped slightly but didn't budge. "Ow, doll."
I sighed. "James, I have to see if the serum worked. If Sharon's alive."
"I know." He wasn't moving I knew that. "I know you need to see if it worked but what if it didn't?"
"I have to see for myse-"
"I also know that you're still not yourself, that when you came back from the dead it was like resetting your mind," Bucky sighed, his grip on my arms loosening ever so slightly.
"You're right. I'm still in winter soldier mode. I can't feel anything, no emotions, no nothing," I whispered. "But there was a voice in my head that told me I had one mission, I had to save you. I have saved you, now I can bring Sharon back. She's all I can think about even if I can't feel the guilt just yet."
"Doll, I'm not letting you go." Bucky's grip didn't tighten but he didn't move. His chest was flush with mine, his beautiful blue eyes looking down into mine.
"I know you won't that's the problem," I sighed. Okay time for plan B... His lips were familiar as I kissed him. He joined in, but he didn't let go of my wrists. I wriggled my left leg free, wrapping it around his waist. He didn't object, prying open my lips with his tongue.
Okay, here goes... I flipped us around, now I was pinning him to the wall. Still kissing him. This wasn't going well. He still had my wrists, god dammit. I pulled away, my breathing rushed. "Let go of me, James."
"No, doll." Bucky smirked at me, shaking his head. "I know that meant nothing to you, you were trying to make me let you go. Good idea, but I'm not that easy, doll."
I pulled away, twisting around so my back faced Bucky and my arms were wrapped around my front in a mess. I pulled forwards, my left arm now free, his non-bionic hand. I tugged again. Nothing. Grabbing the ridge of the lift I hoisted myself up and kicked open the escape door. I hooked my legs over the edge, hanging upside down. Bucky still held onto my right arm.
"Zoe!" He shouted, gripping my wrist tighter.
I could feel my shoulder popping out of its socket. Ow. Ow. Ow. I winced.
Bucky let go of my arm. Yes! I went to swing up. Instead Bucky grabbed my waist, my face now buried in his stomach as I hung upside down, my thighs resting on his shoulders. My ankles were still on the edge of the lift though. Brilliant, just brilliant...
He unhinged my legs from the escape door, holding me upside down."Doll, you're not going anywhere."
Yes, yes I was going somehwere. I could play dirty. My knee was near his head, my metal knee. "I'm sorry, James," I mumbled into his shirt.
"What-?"
I kneed him in the head, a feeling of guilt hitting me as he groaned. Feelings? They were coming back. What on earth had triggered them?
I fell forward as he fell to his knees, landing neatly on my feet. Bucky's grasp had fallen away from my waist.
Bucky swayed, blue eyes unfocused.
I leaped for the escape door, hosting myself out of it.
"Miss Frost has left the lift, Mr Stark." Damn you Friday.
I grabbed a cable starting the climb to the next lift door. The door where Sharon was.
"Zoe, God dammit gal!" Bucky was now out of the lift too.
I climbed faster, he would not catch me, he wouldn't. The door. I swung, grabbing the edge and hitting the open button. I rolled onto the floor, now in the living room. I had to find Sharon.
"Zoe!" Bucky cried.
I spun around to see Bucky dangling, leg trapped in a wire. He was going to fall.
The cable cut into my hands as I whizzed down to save him. "Give me your hand."
He gave me his left hand, gripping tightly as I pulled him up.
"Thanks," he mumbled, holding onto the cable.
"Come on, I have to see Sharon," I said, climbing back up and going through the door.
My shoes hit the floor rapidly, I hadn't waited to see if Bucky had followed me. I burst through the doors of the lab.
Natasha jumped up, gun in hand. She pulled the trigger.
Bucky rushed in front of me. His metal arm pinged as the bullet made contact. "No, she has to do this."
I stepped around Bucky, walking up to Sharon. Her cheek was cold under my touch as I took her hand in mine. "Come on Sharon, come on."
"Zoe," Sharon whispered, her eyes flickering under her eyelids. Yes. It had worked.
"Zoe!" Steve yelled, running through the doorway. Fury followed him in, gun in his hands.
My head spun as I backed away from Sharon. She was okay. Relief washed over me, the emotions hitting me one at a time.
Stark, Steve, Clint, Sam, Vision, Wanda and Thor ran in too, watching as Sharon writhed.
My head began to tingle. No. Not now. I stepped back.
"Miss Frost, you have disobeyed our orders again. You will be punished." I looked around. No one else had heard it. It was in my head. It was HYDRA.
The voice came back - the old me. "Remember, as they shock you you have to remember. I'll help you."
"When you wake you will kill them all, Miss Frost."
"Help," I squeaked, staggering backwards.
"What?" Bucky watched me as I sunk down onto my knees.
"HYDRA," I mumbled before volts of electricity rushed through me. I tried not to scream, but I couldn't hold it in. This was far more painful than before. The glass around us rattled as I screamed.
Sharon shot up in her bed. "Zoe!"
I managed a smile before I blacked out.
"Hey, remember okay. Remember Bucky, Becky, Sharon, everyone. But most of all don't forget yourself," the voice whispered. "You are Zoe Frost and you will not be HYDRA's slave ever again."
