A/N: I've been debating on how to post some of my chapters since a few of them are kind of short. So I just decided to combine them. Here you go!
Claire woke up to find herself in a cold pair of arms and moving. Lightheaded and confused, Claire looked up to see herself in Myrnin's arms.
"Michael?"
"He's ahead of us searching the rooms." Myrnin glanced down at her. "You gave us quite the scare, Claire."
"Sorry." She murmured sarcastically. Glancing up again, she saw red lining his face. Blood. "What happened, Myrnin?"
"Oliver bit you."
She rolled her eyes. "I remember that part. I mean after he bit me. What happened?"
"The room broke out in fights: Oliver's followers against Amelie's. Oliver has more than we originally thought and it got really messy. I got to you first and by that time Amelie and Oliver were gone. He hadn't had the time to drain you so you're okay."
"And now?"
"Some are still fighting but many on both sides have retreated to wait for instruction."
"Oh God."
"Yes: it's a full out war now."
"In here!" Michael's voice came and Myrnin sped toward it. This jarred Claire a little bit and she closed her eyes to get over the urge to puke. "Claire? Claire! Look!" She opened her eyes and was blessed by the sight of her little boy safe in Michael's arms. Crying, she held her arms out and Michael placed her son in them.
"Mama! Mama!"
"My baby! Oh, Nathan!" She nearly cried as she held him close. "Thank you, Michael. Thank you, Myrnin."
"It's no problem. We're just lucky we got here first."
Claire nodded. "You can put me down; I think I can walk now." He stood her and slowly removed his arm just in case she fell.
When she was steady on her feet, she looked around the room. It was dark with nothing but a few chairs, a table, and a crib-which she assumed was specifically placed there for her baby. There wasn't anybody else in the room besides them which made Claire wonder aloud, "Where's Jason?"
Michael looked at her confused. "Jason? Why would he be here?"
"He's the one who brought Nate to Oliver."
His jaw dropped. "Jason? Why would he do that? Why would he put his own son's life in danger?" Claire was about to admit that she had no idea when Myrnin interrupted her.
"As important as this is," He said and Claire wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or not. "it can be discussed in a safer place."
All agreed and they moved quickly but quietly through the building to get to the portal in the janitor's closet. They were a few doors away from safety when a vampire, who Claire recognized but couldn't remember where from, appeared in front of them. Friend or foe? Claire didn't know but she still hugged Nathan closer to her chest as he -she? Claire couldn't really tell- began to speak.
"Ah Myrnin, Amelie's witch, and Claire, Amelie's human pet, together. Lucky me: I get to kill two birds with one stone." He snarled.
Foe, definitely foe.
"Pennywell, you may want to retreat for I am not in the mood to show mercy tonight. Leave us be and you may leave with your life."
Pennywell laughed. "No amount of your dark magic can help you beat me, witch."
"And you don't have your lynch-mob to help you out, witch hunter. So I guess we'll find out." Myrnin turned and pushed Claire towards the door. "Go."
Claire looked behind her at the door then back at him. "But-"
"Go! I will be fine. Michael, get her." She felt Michael's hands on her shoulders forcing her to move. Before entering the closet, Claire glanced back just in time to see Pennywell lung at Myrnin. Michael closed the door quickly an Claire pictured the Glass House living room and the wall in front of them shimmered before it appeared. They stepped through as fast as possible and Claire shut the portal immediately. Realizing that she was indeed home and Nathan was safe in her arms, Claire burst into tears.
She'd done it. She had actually saved her son and gotten out alive, a little worse for wear but still alive. She must have been holding him too tight because Nathan gave a sharp cry of discomfort and squirmed to get out of her arms. She set him on the floor and looked up to see Eve walking in from the kitchen with Natalie on her hip.
Spotting her brother, Nat wiggled until Eve sat her down on the floor. She immediately crawled to her brother's side and they babbled indistinctly excitedly and Claire wished that she could understand them this once.
With the adrenaline quickly fading from her system, Claire felt light headed and collapsed on the couch and was out cold in seconds.
"Claire!" Eve yelled as both she and Michael rushed to her side. For the first time, Eve noticed the red coloring Claire's neck. She was about to ask Michael what happened when he spoke before she could.
"Go get her some bandages and something to eat and drink when she wakes up please." Eve went and Michael checked her neck. He was worried that she was still bleeding, although it was slow. Thankfully, Eve came in and handed him the bandages and he covered the wound.
"What happened?"
"Oliver bit her."
Eve was taken aback. "He bit her? Why would he bit her?"
"He knows that she belongs to Amelie and by attacking her he would-"
"Start a war." Eve whispered and Michael solemnly nodded.
After the bandage was put on correctly, Michael listened to Claire's heartbeat and was relieved to find it's rhythm nice and steady and strong.
"Is she okay?" Eve asked after a long moment of wondering what to say.
"I think so. Her heart is still beating and the bleeding is slowing down. Hopefully she'll wake up soon." He turned and saw Nathan splayed on the floor sleep while Natalie was sitting quietly next to him watching them. Carefully, he picked up Nathan and Natalie, who started to fuss when her brother was moved away from her, and put them both in the crib.
"I can't believe Oliver started a war." Eve said disbelievingly as she carefully sat next to Claire and started to wipe away the blood from Claire's neck with a wet towel.
"He's been gunning for power for a while: it was only a matter of time before he acted."
At that time, Shane came through the door talking. "Hey, you guys. What happened tonight? It's like we're living in a Ghost Town…" He trailed off as he laid eyes on what a picture the living room was. "What happened?"
"Oliver bit Claire so that he could start a war."
"He bit her to start a war?"
"Yep."
"He just loves messing with her, doesn't he?" Michael nodded and stood before motioning for Eve and Shane to follow him to the other side of the room. "Let's let her rest." They nodded.
Michael then relayed everything that went down and Shane couldn't believe Claire had put herself on the line like that. Well, thinking about it, he could believe it: Claire would do anything for her kids. Eve was more stuck on Jason's role in everything.
"Why would he do that? He loves Nate and Nat more than anything."
"Apparently not. He nearly got Nathan and Claire killed." Shane stated.
Eve glared at him. "Maybe Oliver has got something on him?"
"We don't know, Eve, and we can't just blame him, Shane."
"So what are we suppose to do then? Wait around for shit to happen?"
"For tonight at least. We also have to wait for Claire to heal. When she's ready, we'll make a plan."
Shane looked over at the couch. "Will she be okay?"
"I-" Michael was cut off by Claire herself. "I'm fine. It was just a little blood." The three friends rushed over to her and Eve hugged her hard. "Ow."
"Sorry. You just gave us such a scare!" Eve relented. "Sorry."
"I'm sorry, too. I had to do it."
"We understand. Now eat something!" Claire eyed the sandwiches before slowly biting into one. "How are you feeling?"
"Okay: a little sore and a little tired and I'll feel worse in the morning, but I'll be good." She continued snacking as her roommates glanced at each other then her. She didn't notice their looks until she glanced from her sandwiches confused by the sudden silence. "What?"
"How do you know you'll feel worse later?"
Claire realized her mistake and cursed inwardly. "You know, I figured getting bit would be a lot like giving or donating blood." She shrugged and glanced at each of their faces, hoping they believed her. Shane and Eve looked a little skeptical but convinced while Michael just shook his head.
"You've gotten pretty good at playing things off but I can still tell when you're lying."
Claire sighed. "Come on, you guys: let me have some secrets."
Eve rolled her eyes. "You don't have any other secrets so you might as well tell us."
"I don't want to." She said stubbornly.
"Why?"
"Because you'll make a big deal about it."
"If someone bit you, then it's with good reason. Unless you've struck up some deal…"
"No, no, of course not: that would be stupid. It was only once and it was a dire situation and I had to help-"
Shane scoffed before she was even finished. "What kind of 'dire' situation did Myrnin get himself into?"
It shocked Claire that Shane would guess that. "What makes you think it was Myrnin?"
"Please. Myrnin is the only 'friend' you have that you would think that you have to help."
"I'd help Sam out."
"Not as much as you'd help your crazy boss."
Claire was about to argue when Eve stopped her. "We all know its Myrnin, just tell us what happened."
Claire glared at Shane for another second before taking a deep breath. "It was during the end of the fight with Bishop. I was coming home to warn you guys about Bishop when Ada appeared."
"Ada? Myrnin's brain in a jar?"
"Yes. She grabbed me and pulled me through-"
"How'd she grab you if she's a brain in a jar?"
"I don't know: she somehow created a projection of herself. Anyways,"
"But how did a projection touch you?"
"I don't know. Anyways, she took me to what I assume was a cave but I couldn't see because it was pitch black. I thought I was alone and that she'd left me to die."
"Why would she do that?"
Huffing from exasperation, Claire shrugged. "She was somehow under the notion that Myrnin and I have some torrid love affair going on and she wanted him. Shut up Shane." Claire snapped because she could already hear him laughing.
"I'm just saying."
Claire glared at all of them. "Do you or do you not want me to tell the story?" They all nodded. "Then stop interrupting me because I don't know how she did it." They nodded again and Claire rolled her eyes before starting up again.
"Anyways, I heard moving and chinking and found that Myrnin was there with me…"
(A/N: It's basically what happens in Fade Out when Ada puts Claire and Myrnin in that cave and Myrnin helps her across the cave, even though he tells her to stay put, then ends up biting her. I'd type the whole thing out but I lost my book a few weeks ago. If you want to go read it its pg. 218 to 221.)
She tried to make it sound a little better than it was but even with her stretching the facts (like Myrnin asking and her giving him the okay to bite her) it still sounded bad.
"It wasn't a big deal, really. It was a tiny bit of blood and only one time."
Michael opened his mouth, most likely to disagree, when Eve cut him off. "Shh, Michael. It was a long time ago and isn't important right now compared to the vampire war that's going on! What are we going to do?"
"I would say wait it out and avoid getting involved but-"
"You're a vampire and Claire is Amelie's assistant: you can't stay out of it."
They all thought for a few minutes.
"How about tomorrow we go out and try to figure what's going on, at least with the humans. Maybe a few of them will know something?" Everyone nodded.
"Okay. Then the three of us will go out and get this done."
"Three?" Michael asked.
"Yeah. You can't come with us, dude. Do you think people will talk to us with a vamp around? Sorry, this mission is for Daylighters only: no night walkers."
"Shane-"
"No, he's right, Michael." Eve jumped in and he sighed.
"Okay. Just be careful."
After all the plans for the next day were made, Claire got up and almost fell right back down.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm still a little weak and light headed from earlier. I'm just gonna head up to bed."
"Do you need help?"
She was about to decline but she remembered the twins and she was way too weak to carry them up the stairs. "Sure. I'll make it by myself but can you bring the twins up?"
"Of course."
"Night y'all."
"Night."
Claire didn't notice how tired she was until she opened her bedroom door and collapsed on her bed. A few seconds later Michael entered the room with Nathan and Natalie.
"You okay, Claire?"
"Yea, just really tired."
"Will you be comfortable sleeping in that?"
"Yes. And Michael?"
"Huh?"
"Would you mind lying them on the bed next to me? I really need to know they're here."
"Sure."
With both cuddled up next to her, Claire slept peacefully and deeply.
