Another year had passed and 1997 looked promising. Whitney got a school that would be dedicated to her, and that made her so proud that her community looked up so high to her in that regard. Whitney also had another acting project to work on, which was a multi-cultural, live version of the Disney classic, Cinderella in which she would put her producing hand in this time. She chose the Pop and R&B singer Brandy to play the titular role, while she would be playing the fairy godmother. However, her future plans may need some altering up as Whitney began to feel some certain symptoms once again.
"Nippy, you alright in there?" Cissy asked her daughter. They were in Hawaii for a concert that Whitney was headlining. She had a sold out crowd who was enjoying every bit of the soulful prowess that she was giving to them. However during intermission Whitney felt sick and immediately headed to the restroom backstage to throw up. Cissy cleared everyone out of her dressing room so she could tend to her alone. Whitney finished up and splashed water on her face to rinse of the sweat and makeup to reapply. She looked at herself in the mirror and thought back to when she had her last period and realized she was late. And obviously, she was starting to feel sick. Could I be? She anxiously asked herself. A bit of excitement ran through her at the possibility. But also fear due to her miscarrying twice. She opened the door and sat down in her chair so her makeup artist could reapply her light makeup.
"I'm fine ma." She told her. "I think I just ate some bad Hawaiian food." Cissy cocked her head, not believing her at the least. She looked her in the face. "Really? Bad Hawaiian food?" she asked. "I was born at night, not last night. I can tell you're pregnant." Whitney shook her head, as there was no used to hiding it from her omniscient mother. "How do you always know what's going on? Never mind, don't answer that." She couldn't help but chuckle. Cissy put her arm around Whitney. "Because, I've known you since you were in my belly." She chuckled. "I know when something is bothering you. I don't always pry, because I know that you are a grown woman and you just want to be left alone to deal with situations. But on something like this, I have to speak up." Whitney held her belly. "I'm not sure yet mommy, but what if I am? Kevin and I weren't even trying either. Well that hard at least!" Cissy smiled. "God has a way of making things happen on his own time. I think you should go to the doctor as soon as possible. Then go from there." Whitney nodded and heeded to her mother's advice.
Once she got back home, she made a visit to her doctor who gave her the much needed confirmation. "So, how did it go?" Cissy asked. "Well, you were right, I'm pregnant!" Whitney happily exclaimed over the phone. "Praise the Lord. This is such a blessing." Cissy told her. "But I'm not gonna tell Kevin right away." Whitney declared. "Why would you do such a thing?" Cissy asked. "Because ma, I just…wanna make sure… everything's okay this time. I don't wanna think the worst but… I just don't wanna hurt Kevin again." She told her. Whitney had been clean for a few months fortunately, so she didn't think drugs could harm her child this time. However, she just wanted to be sure there would not be a turn for the worst. Cissy went on. "Until when? I'm not gonna tell you what to do Nippy, but waiting it out from your husband won't do anyone any good. He's your husband baby. He has the right to know right away so he can support you along the way. You know how the first trimester can be."
Yeah. And with the exception of my miracle baby Krissy, I never got to experience past that, she thought to herself
For a couple more weeks, Whitney did not tell Kevin anything in regards to her pregnancy. She blamed her sickness off of catching a bug that had been going around and her fatigue from starting the plans for "Cinderella". However, Kevin could tell that his wife was changing physically; after all, this wasn't the first time that he was a father. As he watched her peacefully sleep at home, he had no doubt in his mind that she was carrying their child. Whitney began to stir and she opened her eyes. She looked up at Kevin and smiled. "Were you watching me naughty boy?" she asked him. "Yeah just a little. You looked so peaceful." He told her as he smiled back. "You know, you have this kinda glow. Like within." "Oh yeah?" Whitney casually asked. He knows. Between he and my mother, I now know that I can't ever hide a baby . "Whitney, I know your symptoms are not because of an illness or whatever. I know your body now well enough to know that's not it. Are you pregnant?"
Whitney sat up and nodded. "I am." She half whispered. Kevin grinned and he gave her a kiss and put his head on her belly and gave it a kiss. He looked back up at her with a look of concern. "Why did you feel like you had to hide this from me?" he asked her. "Because…of what happened last time. I'm sorry." Whitney said, not wanting to recall that melancholy period. Kevin rubbed her belly. "Listen, I know that has been bothering you. It's bothered me too. But I think this time, it's different. I feel like God is saying that this time is right. Everything is gonna be fine babe. So let nature take its course this time." He's right. I've gotta trust God this time and know things will be alight She thought as she allowed Kevin hold her.
More weeks passed and Kevin and Whitney were able to find out the sex of the baby. Whitney began to get both nervous and excited as the nurse put gel on her belly and took a sonogram of her insides. Kevin held her hand in anticipation of a healthy growing baby. "Let's see here." The middle aged lady mused as she looked on screen. She paused for a second. "Hmmmmm…." Whitney wanted to sit up as soon as she heard that. "Hmmmm, what?" she asked, "Well I'm seeing some interesting activity inside here." The nurse replied. "Is everything okay?" Kevin asked. The nurse looked for a few more seconds before responding. "Everything is fine Mr. Costner. I just hope you all buy two of everything." Whitney popped her head up. "Whaaattt?!" she asked. The nurse tried to hold back her smirk.
"Yep. Looks like you are expecting multiples, and it's looking like it's twins." Whitney and Kevin squeezed each other's hands in excitement. "Looks like God gave us double for our trouble." Kevin told her. The nurse showed the soon-to-be parents the sonogram of the twins. From the looks of it, they were having a boy and a girl. Whitney teared up as she watched her unborn children grow from inside of her. She looked up and Kevin had to fight back his own tears as he look on in admiration. They couldn't believe how blessed they were going to be, to have two babies. It was almost too good to be true. "Hi babies. Mommy and Daddy loves you already. You two just stay healthy and happy for us." Whitney said to the screen, not caring if it sounded silly or not. She silently vowed to do right by her body this time.
And as Kevin leaned over and gave her a kiss, he prayed for a good outcome this time.
