Chapter 9: Unrelenting
Day 1: Morning
It is a peaceful day at the household where Mirajane and Assassin remained together with the familiar. They are savouring everything that Mirajane has cooked for them. From simple dishes like a hot – plate grilled fish over rice to the exquisite feast of a medium – sized Beef Wellington, the delicacies are all arranged in a way that will make buffet initiators shy away from their own set – up. Only one flaw has not escaped the notice of the familiar that is now eating the dish at an elegant but very fast rate.
"Mirajane – san…" the stoic lady now placed her chopsticks down gently as she is about to give her compliments to the chef.
"Yes?" Mirajane cheerfully asked as she simply eats her food.
"It is true that your food is undeniably exquisite." Mirajane's eyes now shines like a child has been praised for the simple deed that she has done. But then, the critic has now dropped the bomb at an alarmingly fast rate that can put the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to shame. "However…"
"May I ask this of you?" She now gently put the napkin in her lips, wiping away the last morsel of food that stains her mouth. "The next time that you prepare our food, please consider the number of people in our house."
While it is true that Mirajane's dishes are really delicious, she did not count in the fact that there are only three people in their house, if she will include herself into it. She only nervously laughed at the implication. However, the familiar lifted up her spirits to cloud nine once again as she now said this.
"But then again, this will be your first time, so I think I will enjoy this while I can." She monotonously replied with a small smile on her face.
Day 1: Midday
Many students in the school are now preparing themselves for Valentine's Day and White Day. Many students are now acting up frantically since the month is now February, and the female students still cannot make up their mind as to what kind of chocolate recipe they will make. Some may even go to great lengths in order not to have a boyfriend just to escape the high school horror that is Valentine's Day.
In the midst of a really hectic school rush, one girl leaned on a tree, gazing lovingly at her senior. She just held her books tightly as she seems contented on watching him from afar. At the large branch of that tree is a woman with long silky purple hair, her eyes covered with what looks like a glassless visor.
Although what the girl feels right now is an insatiable lust for that man, she kept that lust almost successfully bottled in. The reason for her lust is the Crest Worms acting up, eating upon her prana reserves. She kept that all inside, all for the sake of love.
The red – haired senior now noticed her, and he smiled at her. Most high school girls will feel their blood rushing to their cheeks at its best, or a heart pounding excitedly at its worse, especially if they have a crush on that man. The effect on her however is tremendous. Aside from the mild blush and a heart rate that can beat a horse's, her Crest Worms are now rushing wildly throughout her whole body, inflaming her lust even more. She tried to keep it under control through her sheer willpower, and forced a small smile upon her face. Her senior then continued on his way, but not before giving her a sign inviting her to come over to his house again. She nodded at that notion, her bliss still evident on her face, and he went on his way.
She finally spoke after that scene that consisted only of signs, her heartbeat and the worms in her body now finally calming down. "Senpai is really kind."
"I'll be the judge of that." The woman with the visor finally spoke as she stood up, the branch supporting her weight as if she is never there in the first place. But then again, Servants are reputed to perform impossible feats, so standing on a branch is merely child's play for her.
"Rider…" she spoke firmly as she gathered her things. "Please promise me that you won't kill Senpai."
"Only if he doesn't strike first." The woman now named Rider quipped. "I am still under the order of your brother Shinji. You have to be my Master to request of that."
"Is that so?" She quipped disappointingly, her expression of resignation still on her face. "I see."
The girl knew that Rider has set up the Blood Fort to replenish her prana reserves under Shinji's orders. She can give her the prana that she needs, but in her current state, she is not a Master in this war. After all, she doesn't want to participate in the bloodshed that is the Grail War in the first place.
Rider however wanted Sakura to be her Master, since she saw that she is a lot nicer than Shinji. But the girl didn't want to participate. That is her decision, and she will follow Sakura no matter what, even if it means having that boy as her Master.
However, from that moment that she saw the boy that Sakura is talking about, she unknowingly presented her an alternative, and that is if she will meet that boy in person. If she can get that boy as her Master, she can protect Sakura again. But then again, she can't change sides in front of her current Master, as she is under the Command Spells of that being. Although she can consider Shinji as weak, the Command Spells from the book that he holds held as much power as actual Command Seals itself. He can even order her to save him at his whim. She just heaved a sigh at a glimpse of hope that she saw that shattered immediately in front of her eyes.
"What's wrong, Rider?" Sakura asked the Servant as she tilted her head. Rider then jumped from the branch and landed gracefully on the ground, her hair ever swaying lightly from the gentle wind force that she created upon landing.
"Having glimpses of my early childhood." She replied, although it is a half truth. Sakura then walked towards the residence of her Senpai. But then Sakura turned her head to see Rider following her, when she is supposed to protect her brother.
"Please take care of my brother." Sakura pleaded, to which Rider only heaved a mental sigh.
"I'll take care of him." The woman with unnaturally long hair replied. "But please, let me accompany you first until you reach the manor. Other Servants like that arrogant guy might kill you upon meeting you the second time. "
"Don't worry, Rider." She assured the Servant. "He will never appear again unless I find him. He also appears to have seen another one while he is having a conversation with me."
"But…" Rider is about to protest when Sakura looked at her with her pleading eyes. The Servant may not see that, but she is definitely feeling the pleading from her voice earlier.
"I understand." Rider resigned with a nod as Sakura turned her back on her. "May you have a safe travel, Sakura."
"Thank you, Rider." Sakura replied with relief in her voice as she heard the rustling winds of the ground. She turned around to see that the Servant is now gone.
"May you have a safe travel too, Rider."
Day 1: Evening
You are weak…
You are absolutely weak, King of Knights.
I should be the King.
The menacing voice now woke up Saber from her soothing sleep. She doesn't have any of those dreams before, if it even counted as a dream. All she heard is a voice. But that voice is enough to send cold shivers down her spine.
No, she is a knight. She is never supposed to be afraid of those kinds of things in the first place.
She then looked out of the window, and it was then that she now felt a sharp spike of prana. She then went out and changed into her armor. She is about to go out when Shirou called her out on it.
"Saber." Shirou now called her, seeing as she will go out without him. "If you are going, at least wake me up first."
"Shiro, it is a battle between Servants." Saber reasoned out. "Magi are supposed to be hiding. If you are going into a battle between Servants, at least make sure that you are hidden away from other Servants' sights."
"You are forgetting that I'm a Spell Caster, Saber." Shirou retorted back as Saber turned her back on him. "And I don't like hiding, so whether you like it or not, I'll be going with you."
"And risk your life just like last night?" Saber hoped that her reasoning has clinched it, sending her Master weighing the options between saving her life and prioritizing his own first. But Shirou surprised her with an unflinching comeback.
"If I have to, yes." Saber looked back at her Master's eyes, and although his eyes are golden, she now discerned that those eyes held almost no purpose in life, as if she saw a man that has lost everything from his childhood, and that the only thing that kept him going are his ideals. She now sighed softly in defeat at the stubbornness of her Master as she now said this.
"If you say so." Saber now held her invisible sword tightly. "Let's go, Shiro."
Saber now left the manor, her Magic Resistance blowing away at the inside defense of the Bounded Field. Shirou now followed her. But he can't keep up with her speed, so now he used Reinforcement on himself to keep up with the speed of his Servant, who is still confused at the events that now transpired.
"Get them, Berserker." Illya commanded as Berserker howled. Assassin prepared his nodachi, Monohoshizao, for his last stand. He just chuckled to himself at his miserable fate. What in the gods' green blazes did he do to deserve this kind of beating?
Well, then, at least he can demonstrate his ultimate technique to the beast guaranteed to have him dead in three slashes defying the laws of physics and time…
Or not.
As he took the stance to perform his technique that is close to the Second Magic's, Berserker's instincts told him that the Assassin that he now sees is no ordinary one. Although he is not one of the Hassan, Fuyuki is his territory, therefore granting him enough proof that he has a boost in power. Added by the fact that although he is a wraith, he is a Japanese legend; enabling him to use his technique at the fullest.
The only thing that he can do is to defeat Assassin at all costs. He knows that it will not be an easy feat, as his Presence Concealment is only a ruse for something that he is hiding under his sleeves.
Caster now waited anxiously, since she knows that Assassin class Servants can be killed by Berserker class Servants in a matter of seconds.
But then, as though a miracle has descended upon them, it is now an hour since she felt Berserker going on a rampage against Assassin. Instead of wondering how Assassin managed to keep up with Berserker's strength, she now used that time wisely to resurrect her minions through reanimation chants while fortifying her Bounded Fields. Also, since Kuzuki is now here, she can ask him for his help.
If the Master of Berserker is indeed a frail one, it will only take a matter of seconds before that child drops dead. With Kuzuki's unnatural martial arts technique and her insurmountable support spells that she can boast as a Caster Class Servant, plus her ultimate attack at her disposal against Servants using only brute strength, this fight will be anything but easy.
Caster now appeared at the entrance of the Ryuudou Temple, her prana disguising her form. Three hours has now passed before she considered Assassin to be dead. She then brought up her lacrima and concentrated her prana on it. It is then that she saw Assassin lying there, bruised and bloodied all over by Berserker's unrelenting attacks that showed Assassin no mercy.
Even though he is an Assassin, she can compliment on his prowess, and on her power to summon a mythical Servant as him. Sadly for her, she did not take enough time to study his skills and stats that will uncover the secret behind Assassin's power.
But this is no time to contemplate on those, as Berserker now approached her slowly. She now widened her eyes when she found out who he was.
"No… Please… Not you…" Caster whispered as her fears are now proven true. She knew of the maddened warrior that appeared in their midst. She hesitated for a split second, but then she has no choice. Meanwhile, the human assassin is now hiding in the bushes, waiting for the right moment to strike.
He now sees that chance when he saw the frail girl that Caster has shown to him. Using the Concealment that Caster has now bestowed on him, he now slowly approached the girl.
Within five slow seconds, he now prepared his technique that can guarantee the girl's death, consisting of a hard blow to the nape. One snake – like strike to that part and all will be finished.
Or so he thought.
He instead struck upon the mad warrior's hard forearm, to which the instincts of that warrior has seen it fit to protect the girl. He has packed quite a blow, as it landed a dent to his forearm, but that doesn't deter him at the least. He now retreated, seeing as he did not succeed in putting an end to the Master of Berserker. Caster then shouted to her partner.
"Please save yourself, Souichirou – sama!" He then saw that Caster is now floating in mid – air, her multiple Thaumaturgical Circles in the sky now aiming at both Berserker and Illya. Her cloak also now formed small Thaumaturgical Circles that further enhanced her ability. He then promptly backed away several meters from where he is standing on.
As the Circles now light up with the luminosity of an entire city, and ensuring that the victims are now within her reach thanks to her Binding Circle, she now chanted the line that can guarantee the warrior's death.
"Hecate Gaia!"
The Circles now lighted up, and the rays of light now darted in all at once to damage beyond recognition the one that they call the Mad Warrior of Greece. Her slender staff is now directed at the large man. She now finished the chant with a large Thaumaturgical Circle in her front and back as she chanted the words faster than her thoughts can handle it to give Berserker the final blow. Her wish is now answered by her large Thaumaturgical Circle firing an enormous ray of light at the ones that are now enclosed in the binding circle.
She now descended softly to the ground, seeing as she now seemingly accomplished an impossible feat: To defeat the mad warrior that is Berserker through her own class designation. Maybe her abilities as a Caster are not so bad after all. She then called out to her partner, seeing as the scene is now safe.
But then, she will wish that she has not descended yet. And she will wish that she did not call her partner in just yet.
Shirou and Saber arrived too late at the location, as he saw Assassin now dead and Caster trying to get up, but to no avail. He also saw that his teacher, Souichirou Kuzuki, is now lying on the ground, bruised and bloodied beyond recognition. They looked at the place, and it looks like a monster had ravished this place, leaving messy traces of thrashed stones all around the area. The ground is still smoking hot from the spells that Caster has unleashed.
"Saber, let's ask her." Shirou somberly beckoned to his Servant as Saber shook her head.
"Shirou, you of all people know that she is a Servant. Who knows if it's only an act for her to take up the chance to kill you?" Saber cautiously replied as she eyed on Caster warily. Experience in her battles told her that even a weakened enemy should not be given mercy. Shirou just sighed before giving his reply.
"In that state, will she even have the chance to kill a person?" Shirou has a point, but Saber adamantly believed that even though she is of a Caster Class, and a dying one at that, Servants are still considered to be dangerous. And they will take every chance for them to kill both Master and Servant.
Meanwhile, on Caster's place, for the second time, she saw a light, in the form of that child. Regrettably, she cannot come to know more about him, as she is now dying. Perhaps there are men who deeply cared after all.
Souichirou…sama… Caster forced a smile on her hood, as she inched slowly to hold his hand. She held it affectionately for the longest time, before letting his cold hand go. Shirou approached Caster casually, and as he knelt down he checked her neck for signs of life.
"It seems that you are still alive." Shirou mused as Caster is lying down on the broken pavement of the Ryuudou Temple. "Who did this by the way?"
Seeing as she has no choice in the matter, at least she can provide information to him. "It was Berserker… who did it." She did not mention the real name of the beast, out of wanting to protect her friend. It was ironic that for all of her rational thinking, she still thought about protecting her friend, even though he is now muddled with unadulterated rage.
Shirou can still have more information that he can extract from her, since she is still alive. Also, since she's a Caster, he can know more about the Grail that they are fighting for. Mirajane told him that the Grail is corrupted. All of those who heard her have violent clamors about it, especially Saber. So the only one who can provide answers to their questions is a Caster – class Servant. "Would you like to make a contract with me?"
She is just dumbstruck to find out that he wants to support two Servants in his current state. This boy knows no bounds for his folly. If she were to make a contract with him, he will die from loss of mana. Not out of worry for the frail boy, of course. Meanwhile, Saber sighed at the absurdity of his words.
"Have you gone mad, Master?" Saber exasperated at the heroic deed he is trying to accomplish. It seems that her Master is trying to save everyone, even their enemies. Thankfully, for her, Caster declined the offer.
"No need…to go…that far…boy." She weakly said as she is lying down. "I am…dying anyway…now that…Souichirou – sama…is gone."
It seems to Shirou that she deeply loves his teacher. He decided not to push the matter further, as Caster will be gone any minute now. He then decided to carry her in his arms to a safe place away from the grounds, and it was then that her hood fell, along with her Noble Phantasm. For some reason, his eyes fell on it, and instantly recorded the history of that blade:
R***B******.
It made no sense for him right now, as he only concentrated on giving his teacher a proper burial. Saber followed them at a close distance gripping her blade even tighter for onlookers.
"But I am happy…to meet…the two of you." Caster smiled a genuine smile that she didn't possess for a long time. Shirou just blushed at her remarks, and at her beauty that beheld it, to which Caster weakly laughed.
"And you still have the strength to laugh. Who can still say that you are dying?" He just said it with words dripping with a sarcastic tone. Caster knew that youthful sarcastic tone all too well. It reminds her of her childhood days, before she is used by the gods and goddesses.
"You know…what they say, treasure…those moments…before…they are gone." She remorsefully said as she gave advice to the boy, when that advice was meant for hers. Shirou just blushed in deep red once again for no reason at all, before he laid her down carefully.
"I'll bring Kuzuki – sensei here. Wait for me. Saber, please stand guard over her."
"As you wish, Shiro." Saber sighed at what he is trying to accomplish. In her experiences in the last battle, saving everyone will only lead him to despair.
As the sun begins to rise up, Caster looked on to it, and she began to shed tears. Saber looked at her, and little by little, she knelt down and wiped every tear from her eye.
"Saber…I see…that the boy…deeply cared…about our well – being. Although…I wanted to control you…it seems…that I cannot remain…in this world for long." Caster weakly chuckled as Saber stoically stared.
At the same time, Shirou brought his sensei's body, and laying the body down carefully along Caster's side, he began to dig with his Reinforced shovel. Using Reinforcement to enhance the speed and strength of his digging, he finished digging the grave in a matter of minutes. Shirou carried the body and carefully placed it there, before covering and marking it, as Caster looked on. Satisfied with what they have done, she touched the grave.
"Both of you, come here." Caster beckoned them to get nearer to her. Catching them off – guard, she gave both Shirou and Saber a light kiss on the cheek and hugged them. It is a cheesy group hug by Shirou's standards, seeing as this is still a war. But these are the moments where they can treasure the tranquillity that emanates in the area.
"Thank you…very much…" Caster whispered in their ears as she began to disappear.
On the other side, an old man saw his treasure, a body which he can use to summon True Assassin. Carrying threads, he tied the lifeless body with his Magecraft – reinforced threads to preserve its form, and commanded his worms to carry the body.
Although he is not a participant to this war due to having no Command Seals, there is no time for formality, seeing as the war is not "proper" to begin with due to the corruption that emanated from the wish granting device 2 conflicts before.
With this, the True Hassan – I – Sabbah will rise, giving a percentage of chance for them to win the war. But what he did not know, is that another one has summoned a Hassan – I – Sabbah more powerful than anyone can ever imagine. If only they can see that Assassin, they will conclude that this Servant is one of the strongest of the Assassin Class recorded in the history of the Holy Grail War, paling only in comparison to the wraith that Caster has summoned.
Day 2: Early Morning
"I see in your eyes that you have learned something about this woman, Shiro." Saber contemplated after leaving the Ryuudou Temple as the sun rises up on them. She changed her clothes in her casual outfit to fit into the crowd.
"Not really, but for some reason I dream of blades…" Shirou just scratched his head at those thoughts
"Blades?" Saber tilted her head in confusion.
"Yeah, I sometimes dream of a golden blade, which is blurred." Shirou recalled. "But for some reason, what I saw just now is Caster's Noble Phantasm, and it deeply etched into my mind, along with its history and the identity of the Servant. You can say that I recorded the entire blade and what it had gone through."
She has never heard a Magus who can record the name and history of the blade in just one glance. Out of curiosity, and not for future references seeing as Caster is now dead, she asked "So what is the name of her Noble Phantasm?"
"Rule Breaker: The Severer of All Magical Contracts. And her identity is Medea." Even Shirou has surprised himself, seeing as he recalled the name and the history of the blade perfectly, whereas in his dreams he cannot recall the name and the shape of the beautiful blade that he is dreaming about.
Medea is the former Princess of Colchis, who turned into a Witch of Betrayal. Used by the gods and goddesses to fulfill their own destiny, not knowing of the burden that they have put in the back of an innocent woman. She did not turn into a witch out of her own will; she has turned into one since the people view her as such. This is the life that Shirou had seen a glimpse of, and he is ashamed of himself at what he saw. If only Caster had given him a chance, he will make a contract with her without a second thought, and will try to save her from her miserable fate.
Meanwhile Saber, for some reason, felt an ominous feeling about this boy. If he can identify heroes just by looking at their blades, it will be an absolute advantage for them in the Grail War. They can defeat most of the Servants just by looking at their blade and their history. But for some reason, it also left her unsettled about the matter. She wanted to ask some questions on how in the green grassy Gaia he figured out the identity of the Servants just by looking at their blades.
She is stopped by her thoughts as her stomach led out a cute growl. She just blushed in embarrassment, and Shirou stifled his laugh too hard at the awkwardness of the situation. After composing himself, he decided to cook something for the whole household as soon as they get home.
"I think it's time to eat, Saber." Shirou, with his hand reaching hers, casually invited her to go home with him. Saber silently accepted his invitation, as she held his hand.
A/N: Man, Fate/Stay Night remake is in October…
I deeply apologize if it came out too short. Having 10 journals with supplied reactions from the reader and approaching finals does not help me in the least.
Only way that I can vent out is by diverting my attention to other things. This served as a breather to my mind boggling.
I'll make sure to edit this if I have the time.
And yeah, about the attack of Medea, I only got it from Fate/Unlimited Codes. Also, if you noticed, I added in a touch of what Taiga called "rejected route".
Please rate and review.
