"My favourite part of a roller-coaster ride is when you're going up and you're slightly scared and really excited. You don't know what's coming next but you know it's going to be good." – Gina Gershon
"Henry, leave it alone," Mom says when she catches me making a face and tugging at my bowtie.
"But it's too tight," I whine as I continue to tug at it, hoping my actions will stop it from feeling like it's choking me. "And this shirt is itchy."
She gives me a look and I quit my actions immediately, instead choosing to slide my hands into my pockets and rock back and forth on my heels. She raises her hand and knocks gently on the door. "Em? You decent?"
"Yeah, come on in," Auntie Em calls out.
Mom opens the door and pushes me inside before closing following and closing the door quietly behind her. My eyes take in the large room, noticing the probably really expensive stuff everywhere. I notice a few pictures on a small table and realize it's a picture of Mom and Auntie Em's team. It must be an old picture though, because Auntie Em's hair is different, and so is Mom's.
"Wow, Em. You look...wow," Mom says. I swing my eyes back over to Auntie Em and feel my mouth drop open. She looks beautiful…like a princess or something.
"Thanks, Jayje," Auntie Em says shyly.
"You're gorgeous, Em. Derek's gonna be speechless for sure."
"Not too speechless, I hope. He does have a couple words he's going to need to say," Auntie Em says with a little laugh.
"He might end up croaking them out, but he'll get 'em out. Don't you worry," Mom says with a grin.
"What do you think, Henry?" Auntie Em asks, catching my gaze.
My eyes are wide in wonder as I answer honestly. "You look beautiful, Auntie Em. Like a princess."
She smiles. "Merci, mon ami. You don't look too bad yourself. Very dashing, if I do say so myself."
"Dashing?" I say in confusion.
"Handsome," she offers in explanation. "You and your Uncle Spencer match," she says in amusement as she bends down to straighten my bowtie.
"He said we're the most handsome at the whole wedding."
Mom and Auntie Em laugh. "Oh, he did, did he?" Auntie Em says with a grin. "Well I think he's got it half right... You're certainly the most handsome fellow here."
I flash a smile and stand a little taller.
"Don't let Derek hear you saying that," Mom teases. "I'm not sure his ego could take it."
"It'll be our little secret then, right Henry?"
"Right!" I agree with a grin.
"Em, have you seen Jayje- Oh, my," Aunt Penny says as she knocks quickly and enters the room. "My Chocolate Adonis isn't gonna know what hit him. You're the vision of beauty, E."
"Thanks, PG. You said you needed JJ?"
"Right, yeah. Rossi needs us for a few last minute things," she explains. "And we're running a little behind schedule…so we should probably get moving."
"Okay, come on Henry, let's go."
"Do I have to?" I ask, making a face at the idea of being carted around from room to room again. "I'm tired, can't I just stay here?"
Mom gives me an unimpressed look and opens her mouth to respond but is interrupted by Auntie Em. "He can stay if it's okay with you, JJ. I don't mind the company."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, it's no problem."
"Okay, but don't feel bad about kicking him out if you need to be alone," Mom says before disappearing into the hallway.
Aunt Penny moves quickly and suddenly across the room, throwing her arms around Auntie Em.
"You okay, PG?"
"I'm good, I'm good," she sniffs. "I'm just so happy for you. You're getting your happy ending!"
"It's not an ending, Pen. At least, I really hope not," Auntie Em teases.
"E, you know what I mean. After all the crap you've been through, you deserve to live the rest of your days with sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns. Both of you do. And you're getting that now, because I know you make him so happy, and I know he's going to spend the rest of his life making you happy."
"And if he doesn't I have you to enact my revenge for me."
"Damn right."
"Garcia, you coming?" Mom calls from the hallway.
"Yeah, JJ. I'm coming," Aunt Penelope says, pulling herself away from Auntie Em and leaving the room, shutting the door tightly behind her.
"You can lie down on the couch if you want," Auntie Em says. "I'd take off your jacket first though. Make sure you don't wrinkle it," she says with a wink.
I slip off my jacket and fold it carefully over the end of the couch before jumping up and sitting down. I wriggle around a little to get comfortable and then look up to find Auntie Em looking at herself in a large mirror in the corner of the room. She has a strange expression on her face. She closes her eyes briefly and lets out a breath.
"Are you scared?" I ask quietly, wondering if that's why she looks a little weird.
"A little," she admits, meeting my gaze in the mirror.
"Why?" I ask with a frown. "Mom says weddings are supposed to be happy and beautiful and full of love."
"She's right, they are."
"Then why are you scared? It's gonna be good."
She laughs quietly for a moment. "Oh, I know it will be. I just never thought I'd be getting married, so it's taking a little while to sink in."
"Why didn't you think you were gonna get married?"
She opens her mouth to answer but closes it quickly before turning around, her eyes meeting mine. "Because I was silly," she answers simply. It seems like it's a different answer than she was originally going to give.
"Why are you getting married?" I ask after a few moments of silence.
Her eyes widen a little bit in shock at my question. "Because your Uncle Derek and I love each other."
"Is that the only reason?"
"No, it isn't," she answers. "But it's the biggest reason."
"Why else?"
"I know I want to spend the rest of my life with him, and have the big moments in life with him by my side."
"Like what?"
"You ask a lot of questions, you know that?"
"Sorry," I reply sheepishly.
She smiles. "It's okay. Curiosity for the world is a very good thing. It's how you learn and how you grow. I was just as curious about things when I was your age."
"You were?"
"Yep. I drove my mom crazy with all of my questions."
"Mom says I drive her crazy with my questions," I say with a small smile. "Dad always laughs when she says that."
"That sounds like them."
"And Mom tells me to save my questions for Uncle Spencer," I tell her before swinging my gaze over to the door when I hear someone knocking.
"Em?" I hear Uncle Derek call out from the other side of the door.
Auntie Em moves quickly to the door but doesn't open it. "Derek?"
"Yeah, it's me. How you holding up in there, Princess?"
She smiles when he calls her Princess. "I'm okay. Wishing I could open this door and see you."
"You know Baby Girl will have my head if she catches me here. I don't even want to imagine what would happen if she caught us with the door open," Uncle Derek says and laughs.
"How are you?"
"Missing my woman. These rules of Penelope's are ridiculous. When have we ever been traditional?"
"Never, but I'm not going to be the one to break that to her. Are you?"
"Definitely not," he says. "So you're really okay?"
"Yep. I've got Henry to keep me company in here so I don't disappear into my own head."
"Oh. Hey, Henry."
"Hey, Uncle Derek."
"Do me a favour, buddy?"
"Kay," I agree quickly. "What is it?"
"Give your Aunt Emily a hug and a kiss for me."
I jump up from the couch and do as he asks, throwing my arms around her in a tight hug and pressing a quick kiss to her cheek when she bends down.
"Hey, Derek?" Auntie Em says quietly once I've settled back onto the couch.
"Yeah, Em?"
"I love you," Auntie Em says, putting her hand on the door and closing her eyes.
"I love you too, Princess. I'll see you at the end of the-"
"DEREK BENJAMIN MORGAN! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" I hear Aunt Penny interrupt. I frown as Auntie Em starts to laugh.
"Baby Girl, I was just-"
"Just nothing, mister. Get your butt outta here before I do it for you," I hear Aunt Penny warn. "Things are getting underway in a little bit, so you've got somewhere to be, don't you?"
"I'm going, I'm going," Uncle Derek says quickly. "I'll see you soon, Em."
"Yeah," Auntie Em says quietly. "See you soon, babe."
"T minus 20 minutes, E. You good in there?" Aunt Penny calls through the door.
"Just fine, thanks PG."
"Okay, Dave is gonna come get you a few minutes before you're up, okay?"
"Sounds good."
"See you soon, my raven-haired beauty," Aunt Penny calls out before I hear her heels clicking down the hallway.
Fifteen or so minutes later I break the silence that had settled in the room. "What's it like being in love?"
"It's amazing," Auntie Em says simply. "It's wonderful and fulfilling and it gives you that warm feeling inside...but it's also scary."
"Why is it scary?" I ask, tilting my head in question.
"Because you're trusting that person with all of you. You're trusting that they're not going to ever hurt you, or break your heart."
"If it's scary then why do people let themselves fall in love?"
"Because the other half of love makes it worth it. It's hard to explain, but you'll know one day what I'm talking about. It's like finding a part of yourself you never knew was missing."
I shrug. "I guess," I say, not really sure what she's talking about.
"It's kind of like going on a roller coaster. You're scared about going too fast, and how you'll feel about the ups and downs and the twists, and you're not sure if you're going to be brave enough to handle it, but part of the way in you're feeling the excitement and enjoying yourself," she explains.
I think about her explanation. I know what she means by being scared about something, but it ending up being really cool and fun. I guess that's the way love is.
"Okay," I say while nodding. "So you love Uncle Derek even though it was scary at first?"
"Exactly."
"So does that mean you getting married is just another part of the roller coaster?"
"Huh," she says thoughtfully. "Yeah, I guess it would be."
"And it'll be fun and exciting, right?"
"Mm," she agrees with nod.
"But a little bit scary too."
"Yeah."
"Do you think I'll fall in love?"
"Definitely. And I hope I'm around to see it happen, because I want to see when you understand what I've been trying to explain," she says with a grin.
I hear another knock at the door before Uncle Dave's voice calls out. "Can I come in, bella?"
"Yeah, come on in, Dave."
The door opens up and Uncle Dave comes in, followed closely by Mom.
"Okay, Henry, we gotta go," Mom says, gesturing with her hand.
I jump up from the couch and throw my jacket back on quickly. I look up at Auntie Em and open up my arms for a hug. She squats down and wraps her arms around me tightly.
"Thanks for keeping me company, mister," she whispers in my ear.
"You're welcome, Auntie Em. And don't be scared – it's gonna be just like after a loop de loop," I say, remembering her explanation. "Scary at first, but actually really cool."
She laughs quietly. "Yeah, I bet it will be," she says and then presses a kiss to my cheek before letting me go.
I grab Mom's hand and we head out to find Dad so he and I can find our seats. When Dad and I get outside, I notice Uncle Derek up at the front and immediately begin to think about my conversation with Auntie Em. He's gonna be on that same roller coaster as her today, and I smile when I realize that roller coasters are always more fun when you go on them with your friends and family. I guess love is something that's just meant to be shared.
So on a scale of 1- Aw! How adorable was that? :-) Do let me know - I love reading what your impressions of these conversations are!
