AN: I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going to do to finish this story. There will be one or two more chapters from Hermione's perspective, then there will be snippets through the years of what's happening in everyone's lives. There will be two or three snippets in each chapter like I did when the Golden Trio was on the hunt. I have no idea how many little snippets I'll end up making but it will be a handful. It will technically be an extended epilogue. Once again anything you recognize is JK Rowling's anything you don't is mine.
I pushed the hospital food around on my plate. It didn't seem to matter what hospital you were in the food was always disgusting. I finally dropped the fork onto the plate next to the most disgusting pile of mashed potatoes I had ever seen. It honestly looked like paste.
"Come on Sweetheart you need to eat." I looked up at Sirius and made a face.
"You try eating it." I growled pushing the plate away.
Sirius leaned over to look at the plate and made a face. "I'm good."
"How much longer do I have to stay here?" I asked taking a small bite of a roll. It was as dry as sawdust.
"Only until the Healers are sure you have no lasting affects from the concussion." Sirius said leaning back in his chair. He hadn't left my side since I woke up three days ago.
Three days ago when I found out I was pregnant. I dropped my hands to my stomach and smiled. Pregnant. With Sirius' baby. Sirius was still glowing with pride he was so happy. I always knew he would be. It had been obvious he wanted kids even before I left on the hunt.
The only problem we really had to deal with was Emily's reaction. Sirius and I had talked about it for a long time yesterday and we agreed on adopting her. I was crazy nervous about becoming a mother to her but I knew it would work itself out eventually. Especially since it was her young aunt who mostly raised her.
"What are you thinking about?" Sirius asked pulling my hand into his and placing a gentle kiss against the palm of my hand.
"Emily." I said looking into Sirius' eyes.
"What about her?" Sirius asked smiling.
"Do you think I'll be able to be a good mother to her?" I asked tapping my fingers against my leg.
"Of course." Sirius said immediately, smiling brightly.
"I'm just afraid that – what was that?" There was a strange tapping out in the hallway. Sirius turned towards the door a confused expression on his face. A moment later Luna walked in a long white cane in her hand and a large pair of rectangular black sunglasses covering her eyes. Ron followed her a moment later his hands out in front of him ready to catch Luna if she fell.
"Hi Luna." I said brightly as Sirius gripped my hand tightly.
"Hey Hermione," she muttered dully, groping for a chair and knocked it over.
Ron ran forward and picked it up. "Here let me help you, Honey."
"I'm fine!" Luna snapped, turning towards Ron. Sirius and I exchanged a surprised look as Luna lowered herself into the chair. Ron slowly sat down next to her a pained expression on his face.
"How are you feeling Luna?" Sirius asked slowly, his eyes darting to Ron.
"As well as can be expected." She shrugged halfheartedly, her lips pressed into a thin line. Macnair had used a spell he had created and it had been faulty. It was supposed to gouge out the person's eyes if hit with the spell and bleed to death but Luna had only been blinded. Her eyes were mostly intact with a few lacerations and scarring on the retina but the Healers had tried everything they could think of but didn't know how to undo the magic.
"Have there been any changes?" I asked trying to sit up against my pillows. Sirius waved his wand and the upper part of the bed rose. I smiled at him and turned back to Luna and Ron. Ron had his hands in his hair and Luna was fidgeting with the engagement ring on her finger.
"No." Ron said shaking his head. He looked up after a long moment tears swimming in his bright blue eyes. "Sirius can I talk to you in the hall?"
"Sure." Sirius stood and walked out into the hall with Ron following a moment later, his shoulders slumped.
The moment the door shut I turned to my friend. "Luna, whats going on?"
She slumped in her seat and tears slid down under her glasses. "He hates me."
"No, Luna, of course not. Ron loves you, you know that." I reached forward and gripped her hand in mine.
"Then why does he barely speak to me?" She asked, her voice small and pinched. I grabbed her hand and carefully pulled her onto the bed. Her hands fluttered around nervously, so she could feel how big the bed was, but eventually relaxed against the pillow that was next to me. I could barely see her gray eyes beneath her sunglasses. After a moment of trying to stare at the glasses I carefully pulled them off and set them on the nightstand. Her eyes flicked around unseeing trying to find my eyes. It was hard to see but the little cuts were visible around her eyes.
"I think he's afraid that he's going to say the wrong thing and upset you." I muttered wrapping my arms around her and pulled her against me. She stiffened for a moment, then wrapped her arms around my waist.
"Why do you think that?" Luna asked, her voice thick with tears.
"Well...when he tried to help you with the chair you yelled at him." I said slowly, rubbing my hand up and down her arm.
"I only yelled at him so he would let me do it on my own. He keeps trying to do everything for me but I have to learn how to do things on my own. If I don't I'll depend on him for everything for the rest of my life." Luna said, sniffling.
"Well," I paused thinking. "Maybe this is his way of dealing with your disability. Helping you so things will be easier for you. It pains him that you are having such a hard time."
"Are you sure?" She asked her voice pinched.
"Of course I'm sure. Ron loves you and it hurts him to see you in pain." I muttered rubbing my hand up and down her arm. Sirius and Ron walked back into the room but stopped when they saw Luna in my arms.
"I'm afraid he's going to leave me because of this." Ron's eyes widened and he started forward but Sirius put his hand on Ron's arm and shook his head.
"He won't. I promise. If he does he'll have all of us to deal with." I said trying to soothe her.
"But how can you be sure?" Luna asked her voice soft and unsure.
"You can't." Ron said stepping forward and sat in the seat Luna vacated. Luna stiffened and hid her face in her hands. "But I can never be sure that you won't leave me either."
Luna finally looked towards Ron confused. "What? Why would I leave you?"
"Any number of reasons. Falling out of love, coming to hate me, it could be anything really." Ron said picking up a strand of Luna's hair and twirled it in his fingers.
"But I love you I couldn't do that." Luna said blankly.
"Exactly, I love you too. I can't imagine a life without you limitations or not. It eventually comes down to trust. Do you trust me, Luna?" Ron asked his voice hushed.
"Of course." Luna said sitting up slowly, holding tightly to Ron's hands.
"Do you believe I will do anything to protect you?" Ron asked placing a kiss on the top of her hand.
"Yes." Luna said nodding.
"Do you believe I love you and want to marry you?" Ron asked pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Luna nodded again her lips trembling.
"I'm going to kiss you now." Ron said tracing his finger against Luna's lip. She stiffened in shock then melted against Ron the moment their lips touched. I sniffled and wiped at my eyes. A hand gripped mine and I looked up at Sirius. He was smiling down at me his eyes shining and nodded towards the door.
"We'll give you two a minute." Sirius said helping me up from the bed. My legs were shaky and Sirius slid his arm around my waist. He led me out of the room and I shut the door behind us.
"Think everything will work out between them?" I asked slowly walking down the hallway leaning heavily against Sirius' side.
"I hope so." Sirius said blowing out a large breath of air. "Ron would be devastated if Luna left him."
"I think they would both be miserable if they weren't together." I muttered shaking my head.
"I agree." Sirius said rubbing his eyes. "But I think they'll work it out besides –"
"Sirius! Hermione!" Emily was running down the hall her blonde hair flying behind her. "I missed you so much!"
I was shocked into silence as her skinny arms wrapped around my waist and held me tightly. She missed me? Maybe it wouldn't be such a hard transition after all to become Emily's mother figure. "I missed you too Sweety."
