Revealing an Understanding

Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.

Henry David Thoreau

Lorena's POV

"Whoa, what a rush," Zachary said when we rematerialized in the woods.

A guard shack could be seen across the road from where we stood. The light was on, but it was hard to say if there was anyone inside.

"Now that we are here, who do we ask for?" Zachary asked.

"Ah, none of you considered the colors did you? What were they again?" Professor Nickodemus asked.

"They were gold, pink, royal blue, and silver," Justine said. "However, pink doesn't seem to fit. I believe that it only implies to the fact the person we are seeking is female."

"If that is true, then gold, royal blue, and silver are our only clues left to help us discover who we are seeking," I said.

"Wait," Zachary said, running a hand over his face. "I seem to remember something from when I traveled through Scotland with my family last year. They might be clan colors." He puzzled over it for a few moments longer.

I thought about it too, knowing a little about Scotland. No clan was coming to my mind. Zachary, well a bit of a know-it-all, was a wealth of knowledge.

He snapped his fingers. "I got it. The McCullough clan, the colors are theirs." He walked out of the woods and across the road. The rest of us followed.

"Can I help you?" said the guard.

"I sure hope so," replied Zachary. "Would there be anyone on base with a connection to the McCullough clan?"

"I'm not sure. However, there is one person who might know." The guard entered the shack and made a call. He said nothing about the clothes we had on, but with this being a star base, he's probably seen his fair share of odd attire.

"Captain Charlie Swan is on his way," the guard said, sticking his head out the door.

Five minutes later, we were greeted by Charlie. He was dressed simply in jeans and a dark green sweater.

"Nickodemus," Charlie said, coming through the gates to where we stood. "What do I owe this visit too?"

"My students here," Nickodemus replied. "They are seeking information on the McCullough clan."

"Sir," I said, addressing Charlie. "I'm sure you'll believe us if I were to tell you that the stars sent us."

"Why wouldn't I believe that," Charlie said, looking at me. "I know why you are here, but we can't speak here. Come with me."

CHARLIE'S POV

I couldn't believe what was happening. First, three sisters arrived telling me Annabella, who has been deceased for three years, sent them to me. Then, Nickodemus and three of his students arrived saying the stars sent them. What exactly was going on? I only had one guess. It must have something to do with Isabella and her powers.

"I must warn you that I have other visitors," I said once we stopped outside my door before opening it. I allowed them to enter before me, not sure what their reaction was going to be.

"What a pleasant surprise," Nickodemus said upon seeing the sisters. "It seems to me there was more in the sky then what met the eye."

"Professor, what do you mean?" the young man asked.

"Well, Zachary, it seems we failed to see something else that would have prepared us for this meeting," Nickodemus replied.

"I don't understand," Zachary said.

"I think what the Professor is saying is that these three are witches," a young woman answered. "I saw the sign and failed to mention it. The Witch Head Nebula was luminous." She walked over to them and extended her hand, and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you. I am Lorena, the young man is Zachary, and Justine is standing next to Professor Nickodemus. If my guess is right, we're all here for the same reason."

"Lorena," Moira said, "it is indeed a pleasure. My sisters, Maisie and Maidie. I'm Moira. You're wizards, right?"

"We are," Lorena answered.

"Does this mean what I think it does?" Maisie asked, looking at her sisters who stared back at her.

The three students also had similar looks upon their faces. "Part Wizard, Part Witch. Has that ever happened before?" Zachary asked, looking to Nickodemus.

"No, I'm afraid it has not, but it's not impossible. It could very well happen," Nickodemus answered.

Silence engulfed everyone after that statement. I was surprised at the calm and didn't want to push luck.

"Let's us all be seated," I said. "And yes, Lorena, I believe you're all here about my goddaughter, Isabella. She prefers to be called Bella."

"Shouldn't she be here?" Nickodemus asked. "This it does involve her."

I sighed, rubbing my chin. "Yes, but it is dangerous for her to be on base right. There's someone after her," I answered. "I need to think about how to break this to her."

Annabella had written me a letter and it was given to me the day her will was read. In it she explained how Isabella would have to be accused as being a witch and a wizard. The time had come, and the parties involved were not shocked by want Zachary had deduced.
