Chapter 18
Asami, Mako, and Korra were on the ferry back to Air Temple Island, all eager to apologize to Bolin.
"Asami, are you alright… About what happened back at the city?" Korra asked.
"Yeah," She stated confidently, "it just made me realize that he wasn't the one." She confessed.
Once the ferry reached the dock, they saw Bolin waiting there, arms crossed, and a look of contentment in his stance and facial expression. Besides his disheveled features there was something different about him.
Bolin walked up to greet his friends, who had a guilty disposition at the moment. "What's wrong, guys?" He asked confused then figured it out. "Ah, you're all guilty about leaving me behind. It's alright, though." He said happily. "Don't dwell on the past. We're all together now and that's all that matters." The three teens looked at him strangely. "What? Is it my hair?" Bolin ran his fingers through his hair trying to fix the tangled mess, but they were still staring at him.
"Bolin," Mako started, "have you been crying?" He asked concerned as he looked into Bolin's puffy, red, eyes. But something was different about them.
"Yeah, but I spoke with a very wise man who helped me realize that the past and future is nothing to dwell on." Bolin said as his green eyes sparkled with enlightenment. "But I do need to clear some stuff up with you guys…" Bolin confessed. "Let's go to the pavilion."
Bolin sat in front of his friends in the middle of yin and yang. "Korra, when you kissed Mako when we were dating, I was heartbroken." Bolin took a deep breath. "I had it all planned out. I was gonna give you flowers then ask you to be my girlfriend and tell you…" He sighed. "Tell you that I love you."
Korra began to tear up. "Bolin, I had no idea… I'm so sorry." She said in a hush tone.
"Don't be sorry." He told her. "I realize now that you were just a crush, and I was getting my hopes up for a girl I've literally dated for 2 and a half days." He chuckled. "Our relationship wasn't meant to be amorous, it was meant to be brother-sister love." He smiled then kissed her on the cheek. "Don't dwell on the past, okay?" Bolin asked and she nodded.
"Thanks for telling me, Bolin. I appreciate it." Korra said as she wiped a single tear away from her eye.
Bolin looked to Asami. "Asami, I lied to you when I told you that I didn't feel anything in that kiss last week." He confessed. "It felt like I was walking on air. I felt something in the pit of my stomach that I enjoyed. But I didn't wanna tell you because you said you felt nothing." He said to her.
"Hurry up guys, we're gonna miss the ferry if we keep stopping to window shop." I stated as I pulled Mako and Korra away from a gift shop window.
As we reached the docks to board the ferry I saw General Iroh of the United Forces. "You two go on ahead, I'll catch up." I told them as they looked to Iroh.
"Ooo, someone's in love." Mako teased and made kissy faces.
"Mako, stop teasing her." Korra stated then hit him in the back of the head.
I walked up to Iroh who was talking with the ferry captain. "Hey Iroh." I greeted as he turned to me.
"Hello, Miss Sato." He said then shook my hand firmly.
"You can call me Asami." I said. "Would you like to go out sometime?" I asked.
"I'm sorry, I can't do that." He said to my displeasure. "I already have a partner, and you're too young for me."
"I understand." I said trying to stay strong.
"Plus, I cannot be seen dating the daughter of a criminal." He added.
"Excuse me, what does my father being a criminal have to do with this situation?" I asked angrily.
"Well, if he's a criminal it's only inevitable that you are one, too." He said cockily. "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And apparently, the apple landed right next to her father." He said like a snob.
My eyes filled with anger as I clenched my fist and punched him square in the jaw. "If the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, then why aren't you anything like your grandfather, you dumb fuck!?" She yelled to his squirming body on the ground. "And my father is a criminal!" I yelled. "But you know what!? I'm the one who caught him! I hope a platypus-bear bites your dick off and shoves it down your throat." I turned around and got on the boat, Mako and Korra close behind. I couldn't help but think about the lie I told Bolin when I kissed him last week. I felt something alright. But why did I lie?
Suddenly, she snapped back to reality. "I lied, too." She blurted out. "I saw Iroh back in the city on our way back from Korra's appointment and he was a real jerk." She sighed. "I thought I liked him, but it was false love."
"Why didn't you tell me before?" Bolin asked.
"You said you didn't feel anything so I just decided I'd get over it." She confessed.
"Asami," Bolin began as he grabbed her hands, "the past is behind us, and the future is irrelevant and unimportant as opposed to right now… Where we create our future." He leaned closer to the now crying heiress. "Our future…" He said then pressed his lips to hers.
He tasted the salt of her tears on his tongue then pulled away. "I'm sorry for lying to you." He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I realize now that I love you. Despite our four year age difference…" Asami cut him off.
"I don't care about age. I don't care about that at all, because it doesn't matter." She Kissed him on the cheek. "I'm glad you told me, Bolin."
"And I'm glad I said something." He smiled.
His eyes met his brother's. "Mako…" He started. "I love you and I don't want our relationship fade and break. I know we've been through a lot together, but it's important we stick together and never forget that we watch each other's backs… Because that's what brothers do… Protect one another physically… and emotionally." Bolin looked deep into the amber eyes of his brother and a single tear fell.
"Bolin," Mako started as he tried to hold back his tears, but he couldn't. "Bolin, I'll always love you and I don't know what I'd do without you, bro." Mako cried then unsteadily inhaled as more tears rolled down his cheeks. "When mom and dad died, I knew I had to protect you because you are the only family I have left. If anything happened to you I wouldn't be able to forgive myself." Mako sniffled and wiped his nose with his sleeve. "You remind me so much of mom. When I look at your eyes, they- they remind me of her. And I've always envied your personality." He began. "I'm this brooding, stubborn, hollow asshole. I look like dad, but I'm nothing like him." He confessed.
"What makes you say that, Mako?" Bolin said shakily.
"He was brave, kind, and helpful while I act like a self-centered jerk…" Bolin cut him off before he continued.
"Mako, even though you are those things, you are brave, kind and helpful… You just have a different way of expressing it. And you shouldn't live in dad's shadow. You are your own person and should embrace it." He said encouragingly. "You're Mako, not dad."
Mako answered his brother by hugging him tightly and crying into his shoulder. "Thanks Bolin."
"Anytime, bro." Bolin said as he pried his brother's arms off of him. "Now let's go and eat. I'm starving." He stated as they all laughed.
As they walked back to the Temple, Bolin saw Terensu at the other side of the courtyard carrying a basket. The acolyte simply smiled and winked at him before he walked into the acolytes' quarters, disappearing from his view.
