2. Credo

Be strong, be smart, be relentless.

This was the Suzuki clan's credo, and it had been emphasized to Suzume since she was very small. It was simple enough to learn and seemed easy enough not to forget.

One had to be strong to fight off those who came after them – and to knock the weak back into their place when they got unruly. To be strong wasn't enough though, because if one was strong but wasn't smart then that meant nothing.

Strength was more than physical, her mother had said, it was mental, too.

And along with that strength and intelligence a Suzuki had to be relentless. Giving up was not an option for any Suzuki, nor was showing weakness, because Suzuki's were not weak. In the world the Suzuki were the predators, not the prey.

The same went for the Hibari's, Suzume knew. Their family was adamant on the fact that there were carnivores and herbivores, and that they were the carnivores.

Both of their families were alpha families, and perhaps that was why their families were close.

Because why would a group of predators associate with a group of prey? – The food chain simply wouldn't and couldn't allow that.
