Elijah's legs felt a little bit weaker than he was used to, but it was the least of his worries. He could hear his sister yelling out for help. With careful precision, he passed Matt by in his attempt to get to the situation first. He could hear the unsupernatural being hurrying after him. He ignored the boy as he took in the scene in the room with full focus.
Klaus had turned into the dangerous hybrid he was. He must have lunged up and pulled Rebekah down onto the bed. He had her pinned by the throat. His extended teeth were angrily sharp and ready to bite into Caroline.
"I can't stop him, Elijah." Rebekah said through her struggles for air. "He's going to kill her!"
Elijah burst into action. He grabbed his brother and pinned him to the wall. He wasn't sure where the strength was coming from for the hybrid to even be standing, but apparently something was jumping through his body, clouding his judgement and vision.
Rebekah choked to breathe. She tried to pull her focus over to Caroline, but until her air flow was renewed, she knew her focus would be hindered.
Matt was by her side in seconds. He helped her up to sit on the bed. "Are you okay, Bek?"
Rebekah nodded slowly, appreciative of him by her side. She gently rubbed his arm, proving her gratitude. He may be a mortal, but he was the sweetest man she'd ever had in her life. She was truly blessed to know him. She caught her breath and pulled her gaze over to Caroline.
Elijah kept Klaus pinned to the wall. He watched Rebekah look over Caroline and waited for a status report. He didn't look at his brother. He couldn't. Seeing any shame for his actions or hurt from his condition would tear him apart. He couldn't be torn apart by his brother. He had a job to do. He had to save their family. If something happened to Katarina, then they were all he had left. Family would be always and forever. Til death do they part.
"Bek?" Matt also patiently waited.
Rebekah felt for the weak pulse. Something seemed different, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Her brows knitted together as she got off of the big bed and walked over to Caroline's side. She needed to be closer to her. She needed to get a better view.
Carefully, she pried open the young woman's eyes. The cataracts that had appeared fast were gone. In fact, her eyes were just as blue as they ever were. There was really only one more thing to check. She bared her teeth and began lowering her mouth to the woman's wrist.
"Rebekah?" Elijah questioned, ready to stop her in a moment's notice if needed. Perhaps their sister went off the rails and was feeling the side effects of the virus herself.
"Don't worry, Elijah. I'm not hurting her anymore than she already is." She was about ready to sink her mouth into the unconscious one.
"Rebekah stop!" Matt panicked. He dashed his arm under Rebekah's mouth just in time to prevent her from biting Caroline. He could feel the sharp teeth sink into him. The small amount of pain wasn't anything he couldn't handle, but the shock of it made him yelp.
"Matt!" Rebekah had some panic in her voice. "I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" She jumped up from the bed and looked down at his wound.
"I'm fine, Bek." He looked down at his own wound. He tried to wipe up the blood with his other hand.
"What were you doing?" She looked into his eyes. She patiently waited for his answer. "I could have hurt you more."
"She's infected, Rebekah. What were you doing?" The obvious concern weaved through his bright blue eyes. "You could have gotten sick. I don't know what I'd do if you didn't make it."
Rebekah's gratitude was instantaneous and obvious. She couldn't hide her emotions very well. She threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly to her body. A tear slid down her face. His thoughtfulness meant the world to her. Not many would have done what he did to save her from her own actions.
Matt pulled her away from him and pulled out a pocket knife. He raised up his hand and laced it into her hair and behind her head. He pulled her strongly into a kiss, lingering over the taste of something sweet upon her lips. He loved the feeling of her so near to him. He wanted to resist pulling away, but he knew what she had been up to. He pulled back and reached down for Caroline's hand. As gently as he could, he cut a small cut into her palm.
Both of them waited in anticipation for healing to take place. Granted, it was hard to know if their experiment would be completely accurate, but the fact that her eyes were back to normal had to mean the likelihood of her still being in her first transition was very unlikely.
"What's happening?" Elijah impatiently asked. He needed to know whether Klaus was safe to still be in that room or needed to be brought to a different one. If he needed to move him, then he'd also have to stand guard. His brother's unusual strength was obvious. He could feel him trying to break free of his grip. He couldn't allow that. Who knew what kind of symptoms were now overtaking his brother. He, himself, even had a hard time holding him against the wall.
No healing was happening. Caroline kept bleeding. Matt and Rebekah exchanged looks. She swallowed and looked over at her brothers. "She's not healing. I won't know for sure until she wakes, but I think she's human."
Matt stood up. "I'm going to get something to wipe up the blood and stop her bleeding."
"I'll come with you." Rebekah stood up with him. She paused by Elijah. "Nik's going to have to be kept away from her. It's too much of a risk for him to hurt her right now."
Elijah nodded his agreement. "I'll bring him further down the corridor. One of the guest rooms will have to suffice."
Rebekah began walking after Matt. She paused and looked back at her brothers. Her mouth opened to say something, but Elijah cut her off.
"I will stay with home. I won't let anything happen to him." He held the promise in his lingering gaze. "Go, clean up Matt and tell me what becomes of Caroline when she awakes."
Rebekah nodded and followed after Matt. Comforted in the fact that Elijah would keep Klaus calm and safe. She had to prepare for round two of the fight for Caroline. It was bound to start within the next few hours, assuming this virus was the same as the one that she was familiar with. She'd have to be prepared.
