Chapter Fourteen: Reunions
When Missy and Franky reached the S.M.I.L.E factory it was heavily guarded by the little minions of Flamingo, as Missy put it. Franky had Missy stand off to the side while he took care of the guards. Once inside they came across the female manager. She was shouting some nonesense and grating on Missy's nerves. The noise stopped for a second when Franky kissed her. In the woman's shock, Missy snuck around her to the inner workings of the factory. She could trust Franky to handle himself.
Inside the factory, Missy made short work of the guards inside. They were too busy bossing the dwarves around and laughing at their naivity to notice her sneaking up behind them. Knocking one out first was easy. The second, shocked over the sudden attack, went down quickly as well. The little people started making a fuss over why she would do something like that.
"Those people have been lying to you the whole time," Missy explained. "They've been keeping your princess as a prisoner, not a patient. The fruit you've been forced to make isn't medicine, it's a weapon they sell for profit. I'm going to help you get out of here so you can make it back to Green Bit." Missy then set to work freeing the slaves of the factory. Once that was done, she was sure Franky or someone else had a plan to blow the joint. She planned on being far away.
When Missy stepped out again, the battle was over. A man wearing baby clothes was lying face down in the street. Blood was pouring out of him. Franky wasn't in much better shape. He was out cold as well. There was no sign of any other flamingo minions in the nearby vicinity. Missy started by checking Franky's vitals. Her head was turned to the side, the sight of blood was making her queasy. Her fingers found a weak pulse in Franky's neck. Satisfied he was alive, she pulled her hand back. Without looking at her hand, she wiped it off on a torn cloth nearby.
Missy's attention was drawn to the sound of running footsteps. She turned to look and saw Ace running up to her. "Hey Ace," she greeted. "Did you get to meet up with Luffy?" she asked.
"No," Ace let out a disappointed sigh. "I haven't been able to find Sabo either."
"Sabo?" Missy looked at him for a minute.
"Don't play stupid," Ace said. "You both have admitted to seeing what's been happening in this world thanks to someone from your own seeing into it. You knew that Sabo was alive."
"Yeah okay, you got me there. If it makes you feel better, Rae knows more about it than I do."
"Not a bit," Ace slumped. "I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. Now you're telling me I need to find Rachel?"
"That might not be possible," Missy sighed. She took a long look at the distruction that was around them. "Last I saw she was being rescued from a crumbling building. Lost sight of them in the falling debris. I know she's safe though."
"How do you know that?"
"Because our grandma hasn't come out of the woodworks and started crying, blaming me for not keeping a better eye on her baby grandchild." Missy then turned her attention back to Franky. "Think you can help me move him? I don't know how bad the human side of him is hurt, but his robot side is pretty banged up. I can work on that without too much trouble."
"I thought you hated the sight of blood."
"Working on his robot parts will block the sight of blood. FYI: Robots don't bleed. Now, just pick him up and let's find a clinic or mechanic shop, whichever comes first." Ace looked at Missy, then at Franky and back to Missy. "Okay, maybe carry is asking a bit much. I guess dragging is okay, just as long as he's face down while we drag him. We don't want to risk injury to his human side anymore than it is already." Ace grabbed one of Franky's legs and started following Missy, grumbling about how he had to have such bossy sisters.
Rachel came up to the edge of the 'cage'. Just on the other side she could see her goal, the Nunya. It gleamed metallic in the sun and beautiful in her eyes. A hand on her shoulder stopped her next action. She turned to see a marine with a concerned look. "Please don't get too close," he advised. "It's very dangerous."
"I have a theory on that," Rachel said. She pulled out her sea prism knive and approached the edge carefully. With a fast swipe, four of the strings came down. Rachel stepped through and turned to the marine. "You can probably start escorting civilians out of here now."
The marine had a look of astonishment on his face. It was then changed to sorrow when the strings were replaced with new ones. "That's a problem," Rachel muttered. She put a hand to her chin in thought. "I could probably make a door if only I had more sea prism stones on hand." She then turned her attention to the marine. "You wouldn't know where I could find more, would you?"
"We weren't carrying cargo," the marine stated. He was still reeling from the shock of seeing someone thinking to use a sea prism weapon to escape. "If we had, I would be more than happy to let you on our ship to get them."
"That's okay," Rachel turned away. "It's just as well anyway. I might not finish the door before this is all over anyway. I'll be back though." Rachel then ran inside the Nunya. She came out a few minutes later with a large rifle strapped to her back and a leather purse hung over her shoulder. Using her knife, she cut her way back into the cage.
"You had a chance to escape," the Marine pointed out. "Why would you choose to come back?"
"My only family is in the city somewhere," Rachel said. "I won't just leave them here to whatever fate that maniac has in store for everyone." She was jogging away from the marine, back into the city, when the cage sealed again.
"The world needs more people like her," the marine said. "If I see her again, I'll suggest she join the marines."
Rachel was jogging through the city, not really caring about what fights she may or may not come across. She was jogging through the outer edges of town square when a voice stopped her. "What are you doing?" The voice was gravely, worn with age and usage.
Rachel looked to see a marine in samauri robes and scars across his eyes. Directly across from him was a blond man with a scar over one eye, a blue coat and a black top hat. Both were staring at her in question. An evil idea struck Rachel at that point. She put her finger to her lips and made a shushing noise. "Be very, very quiet," she whispered loud enough for them to hear her. "I'm hunting wabbit." She then took off and disappeared into the streets of Dressrosa once again.
Flower Hill was mostly taken over by the palace and moved to a more secure location. Some of it still remained where it once was though. This part also had the only tree that grew on the hill. The displacement of dirt forced the part of the hill with the tree to become taller. On top of the new Flower Hill, Rachel climbed the only tree there. She crawled across a thick branch reaching towards the palace. Moving her rifle to the front, she looked through the scope. The first image that Rachel saw was Luffy standing between the flamingo and a fallen Law. She continued to watch the scene unfold. Luffy leapt forward, fist raised and anger spilling forth. In a move that shocked Doflomingo, Luffy and Law had suddenly switched places using one of Law's techniques. Law landed a devastating attack that caused blood to gush out of Doflomingo's mouth.
Completely drained from both the attack and having to maintain a 'room' for such an extended period of time, Law collapsed on the ground. He let down his guard, feeling confident that Doflomingo would not be recovering from that attack. Luffy had kicked Trebol when he tried to rush Law. Rachel continued to watch as horror flitted across Law's face. Apparently he was just given the news that the string-string powers were keeping Doflomingo alive.
As Doflomingo's foot came down to finish Law, Luffy's own foot stopped the downward motion. An extremely pissed off look was plastered to his face. His eyes were cold and looked like they could pierce right through you. Being this far away Rachel couldn't hear what was being said, but she imagined that it was along the lines of Luffy being determined to protect his friends and take 'Mingo' down.
Rachel watched the fight progress with Luffy and Doflomingo. Luffy was mildly injured from previous battles to reach the palace. Doflomingo, on the other hand, still had blood trickling from his mouth every now and then. It must have been a pain to try to fight with such horrible internal injuries that Law had inflicted. The two were completely engrossed in their fight.
Rachel scowled when she noticed that Trebol was edging towards Law. Obviously he was hoping to take advantage of Luffy being distracted. Too bad he wasn't counting on someone watching their back. Rachel reached into her pouch and pulled out a dark blue shell. Without looking, she loaded the shell into the rifle with a practiced ease. She set the gun on the branch to stabilize it. Rachel then checked the wind for the speed and the direction it was traveling. It wasn't going to be as impressive a shot as Marineford, but she was going to get her point across. Target in sight, Rachel squeezed the trigger. The resulting explosion drew attention from people on the ground. Not knowing who was below and if she could trust them, Rachel made her move to get down.
Law stared as Trebol approached him, giving off this sickening chuckle. "I'll finish you for Doffy," he said. "You won't get in the way again." He raised his right hand and started to ooze his sticky stuff down above Law. His intention was to suffocate him to death. The sound of a gun going off startled Law. Even more so was when Trebol's body was thrown to the side. He landed not too far from where Law was.
Moving his head slightly, Law made out a hole in the side of Trebol's head. It was clear he had been the target, but it didn't make sense. A normal bullet should not have had an effect on... Law let out a groan in realization. He should have known that it would have turned up again. A mysterious shot in Akainu's shoulder and now one killing Trebol. It was obvious that sea prism stones were involved. But the question was, how would the government react when they realize the one that shot Akainu made another appearance after two years, this time in Dressrosa?
Doflomingo jumped away from Luffy at the sound of a gun. He looked around the area for the possible intruder. That's when his eyes landed on the fallen Trebol. A vein pumped in his forehead as an expression of his anger. Luffy was looking around for the one that made the shot. He was the first to spot the tree not too far away. His eyes widened at the figure that jumped out of it. As Doflomingo started to look around more closely, Luffy was back on the attack. He couldn't let Doflomingo know who it was that made the kill shot.
Rachel was back to running through the streets. There were marines approaching Flower Hill from almost every direction. To avoid them, Rachel took to running through abandoned buildings or back alleys. Her gun would be a dead give away for anyone that cared to take a second look. She needed to find a place where she could lay low. Leaving her gun behind was not an option. Not only was it important to her, she spent a lot of time building it damnit, but it could be reverse engineered should anyone else get their hands on it. Not an option she wanted explored.
"I don't believe it," Viola said. She then announced what she had seen to everyone else on the plateau. "That woman that was with you earlier swordsman, she just killed one of the top executives, Trebol."
"She did what?!" Zoro snapped. "She promised she wouldn't go anywhere near the palace."
"She kept that promise," Viola assured. "She shot Trebol using some sort of gun I've never seen before. She never got closer than the original Flower Hill."
"That's further from the palace than we are," Usopp observed. "I admit though, it does provide a perfect vantage for snipers. That tree stands taller than the palace now that it's been cut in half."
"Where is she now?" Zoro had completely ignored Usopp and was facing Viola.
"She's running through the city now," Viola reported. "She got off the hill shortly after she made the shot. She barely dodged being seen by the Marines. If you head in that direction, you may bump into her." She was pointing towards Flower Hill.
Zoro started moving towards the edge of the plateau. "Wait!" A tiny voice called. One of the people from Green Bit jumped into his pocket. She was the scout that had guided him around in the first place. "I'll help you find the way," she said. "I know how easy it is for you to get lost." Zoro didn't say anything, he only grunted, at least acknowledging he couldn't get around on his own.
Missy opened the door to the clinic she and Ace had come to. She held it open as Ace struggled to drag the oversized Franky through it. "You could have at least tried to help," he complained.
"That would have meant touching blood," Missy complained. She was looking in every direction except at Franky. "You know darn well that I can't stand the sight of it, let alone let someone else's touch me."
"I don't get you sometimes," Ace said. "How can you go through your life without having to deal with blood?"
"Things were different where Rae and I come from," Missy said. "You wouldn't have to see blood except in extreme circumstances. Unless you served in the military, police force or medical field it was kind of rare to see blood. There were violent circumstances, but the laws and punishments for such crimes were enforced, for the most part. If you were caught doing something like that you would be imprisoned."
"Even if it was to protect yourself?" Ace asked.
"There are laws for that too," Missy said. "It all depended if you could prove that you were defending yourself. Otherwise it was considered murder." The two of them got Franky on a gurny and into a sterile room. "I'll see what I can do for his robot side. He'll still need a doctor though."
"Do your best," Ace said. He started to walk to the front. "I'll stand guard and keep an eye out for Rae."
Rae slowed her pace once she discovered she was in an area that had few to no marines in it at all. She took stock of her location, deciding on what direction would be best. "Of all the rotten luck," she mused. "I just had to go and get lost." Rae let out a shudder when she imagined both Missy and Ace threatening her in their heads. She wouldn't put it past them. If they found out the level with which she involved herself there would be hell to pay.
Her attention was drawn by a tiny voice. "Turn left here. NO! YOUR OTHER LEFT!" Not even two feet in front of her, Zoro emerged from an alley. His head turned in her direction, as if sensing her. 'Probably can,' Rachel thought to herself. 'Damn his Jedi skills. The people of this world could teach Yoda a thing or two. Though he can't tell directions worth beans.'
Rachel smiled cheekily at Zoro's scowl. "Is something the matt..." Rachel never got to finish her sentence. Zoro pulled her close and started checking her for injuries. "Ever hear of a personal bubble? You're invading mine!" He ignored her and forced Rachel to turn around so he could finish his inspection. She started talking again once she was facing Zoro's scowling face. "You're taking this a little too fa.." Rachel was silenced this time because Zoro's face suddenly dove forward.
Rachel's eyes were opened wide in shock. Was Zoro kissing her? She raised her hands to push him away. They only got as far as his chest when Zoro pulled her closer. The kiss was dominating in much the same way as Zoro handled his fights. One of his large hands held her head in place, the other on the small of her back just under the rifle, pulling her closer. It practically lifted her off the ground. Rachel's hands were now trapped between the two of them.
A little voice spoke out then. "You're squishing me!" Zoro parted to allow his guide to free herself from his pocket. She jumped down and onto the street. She kept her back to the two of them, giving Zoro some privacy. She knew Zoro would need to be guided back to where the others were so she couldn't just leave him there.
"Who do you thi..."
"Just be quiet," Zoro ordered. He then started kissing Rachel again. His forceful manner was demanding her surrender. But Rachel was a modern woman. Sure, Zoro was her type, but he had to earn the right. So, if he survived Ace, she would finally surrender to him as he demanded.
Once Zoro realized that Rachel wasn't going to just give in, he pulled away. "Consider that punishment for breaking your promise."
"I didn't break the promise though," Rachel pointed out. "I wasn't anywhere near the palace."
"If you had been spotted..."
"I wasn't."
"Damnit woman, would you just listen?"
Rachel pulled away from Zoro, hands on her hips. "Okay, I'm listening," she said. "Why do you think I broke the promise? I wasn't near the palace, I wasn't spotted and I'm not hurt in any way."
"Alright then," Zoro smirked at her. "Then think of it as a congratulations."
"You have a strange idea of what a punishment and a congratulations should be," Rachel pointed out. "They're the same exact thing if what you just pulled is any indication."
"I didn't hear you complain."
"I had someone's lips keeping mine from moving. I can't exactly voice a sound argument in those conditions."
"Is that right?" Zoro started smirking at her.
"Wipe that look off your face mister. Next time you have a thought about how to keep me quiet, just let it go."
"Zoro!" The two looked down the alley Zoro had come out of. Luffy was coming down, an injured Law on his back. Viola, Rebecca, King Riku, and Kyros were following. An injured Robin was being carried by Bortolomeo, who wouldn't let anyone else take care of her. Usopp was being carried by Leo and the others.
"Looks like you came through Captain," Zoro praised.
Luffy gave one of his famous grins. "You knew I would," he laughed. He sobered quickly after that. "We need to get help for Robin and Tra-guy."
"Luffy!" Sabo, Koala and Hack came running up to them. "You shouldn't hang around here for too long. The marines are starting to regroup."
"I need to find my sister and brother," Rachel started to panic. "We can't have the marines spotting big brother."
"He a wanted man?" Zoro asked.
"In a manner speaking," Rachel laughed nervously. "Let's just say, if he's spotted that shit will hit the fan."
"Now I want to meet this brother of yours," Luffy grinned.
"Ummm," Rachel started to back away. "You already have. Bye!" She then took off running back the way she came. She then veered to the right and took that road to what looked like the harbor.
Without waiting for a word from anyone else, Zoro followed. Luffy was quick to come to his senses as well. Soon all the others were chasing after Rachel.
"Must find them," Rachel muttered to herself. She was passing a clinic when the door suddenly opened. A strong arm reached out, grabbed her and pulled her in. Rachel blinked at the sudden change. One hand on a gun, ready to defend herself. "Oh, hi Ace." She then stiffened at the implications. She hadn't lost the others yet. "Ace prepare to meet the pink feathered crabs."
"I'M GOING TO KILL HER!" came from the other room.
"Missy's in there I take it," Rachel gave a false smile. "I gotta go." Rachel dashed passed Ace and into the room where Missy was. Ace stared after her, wondering what that was all about. The door bursting open drew his attention, fire ready in hand.
Zoro saw Rachel get pulled into the building by a male arm. He saw red like he never has before. He couldn't move though, Luffy had suddenly grabbed onto his arm. He was lowering Law down to the ground. Once he was sure that nothing would happen to Law he let go of Zoro. "Okay then," Luffy cracked his knuckles. "Let's go." Zoro, Luffy and Sabo rushed into the clinic.
The three men stopped short at the sight. A man with shaggy black hair and freckles stared back at them, a fire burning in his palm. The fire died when the man finally recognized who had barged in. "ACE!" Luffy was immediately in tears. He jumped his brother in a large hug.
Missy looked up from her work when Rachel rushed in. "I'm going to..."
"Kill me later," Rachel dismissed. "Right now let's make sure that nothing happens to that door."
"Why? What could possibly..." Missy was interrupted by Luffy's cry. "Lock the door girl."
Just as Rachel finished putting up a barricade of heart monitors Luffy's next cry was heard loud and clear. "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU WERE ALIVE!?"
"Should we move to a different room?" Rachel asked.
"That's the only exit," Missy pointed out.
"Darn."
Ace blocked the punch that Luffy aimed for his head. "I wasn't really in a position to," Ace tried to explain. "First of all, I was busy recovering. Secondly, I had no idea where you were training. It was easier for me to train if the world thought I was dead. Once we heard that you had returned to your adventures we started making plans to run into you."
"Who's we?" Zoro asked.
"My little sisters and I," Ace smiled. "They're the ones that helped me. Rachel, especially, helped in my healing. Missy refused to deal with blood in any shape or form. Then they allowed me to stay on their ship to train." Ace then turned his attention to Sabo. "What surprises me most is that you're alive."
Sabo grinned and the three brothers put their hands in the center. They were reunited after so many years. "I had thought you died at Marineford like everyone else," Sabo said. "You have no idea how upset I was that I couldn't go help you. How did you survive that attack?"
"It was all Rachel's doing," Ace informed. "She used one of her 'toys' on Akainu just as he landed his punch. It was a gun with such an enormous range the marines weren't able to find where the shot came from even using their telescopes. She shot him in the shoulder with a bullet made out of sea prism stone. His magma punch turned into just a normal one after that. He couldn't do anymore damage to me. That didn't stop it from hurting like hell though. I asked her why she didn't shoot him sooner and save me the recovery time. She told me to think of it as a form of punishment. The next time a bunch of people tell me not to do something stupid I should listen."
"We've been running into Rachel all this time," Luffy said. His eyes were shadowed by his hat. "You said that she and her sister are now your sisters?" When Ace agreed, Luffy nodded his head and moved to the door that Rachel had disappeared behind.
"You think it's safe now?" Rachel asked. Her ear was pressed to the wall next to the door. There were no sounds of fighting like she thought there would be. Missy didn't answer, too engrossed in her work. Wanting to check, Rachel moved the heart monitor out of the way. As she turned back to the door it opened.
Luffy stood in the doorway. He then walked up to Rachel. "I have something to say to you," he said quietly.
Rachel leaned away from him, not liking the tone of his voice, especially since he kept his face hidden with his hat. "What?" she asked suspiciously.
Luffy suddenly looked up at her. Tears were streaming down his face. He pulled Rachel into a hug. "THANK YOU!" he cried. He was so emotional that he fell to his knees, pulling Rachel with him.
Rachel gently patted Luffy on the back. "You don't need to thank me," she said. "I did it because it was the right thing to do."
Luffy looked up into her face at that. "Ace said that you two are now his sisters."
"That's right," Rachel agreed.
Luffy's tears stopped and he started grinning. "That makes you my sisters too. Shishsihsi."
"Oh hell no!" Missy looked up from her work.
Rachel looked back towards her. "Have you ever known him to change his mind or for someone to get him to change his mind?"
"Damnit."
A few minutes later Law and Robin were brought into the clinic. Those that had some knowledge in first aid helped as much as they could. Since he was still awake, Law gave directions and orders when it was needed.
Ace threw off his shirt and dug through his black sack. Inside was a replacement hat with the goggles and demon skull, this time the hat was as red as blood. He put it on his head with an evil grin. "I suppose now that Luffy knows I'm back, the rest of the world should know it too."
Luffy stared at the scar across Ace's back. It had completely ruined Whitebeard's mark. It had been Ace's pride. When Luffy pointed it out, Ace grinned at him. "It's still my pride," he announced. "It's just for different reasons now. Now it will serve to show the marines that I lived. I defied them and I lived thanks to those I love and call family. I will use this mark to show Akainu that he isn't as powerful as he believes himself to be."
