Chapter Nineteen: 'Sharkbait'
Rachel finished explaining to Missy what she was supposed to get Luffy to do. "Then what will we do?" Missy asked.
Rachel started walking back up to the deck. "Oh, you're going to love this."
"Oh really?"
"Yup." There was silence for several seconds.
"Well?" Missy asked.
"Well what?" Rachel glanced over her shoulder at her.
"What is it that I'm going to love?"
"What? You think just because we're best friends that I'm going to tell you every little thing?"
"You bitch."
"Thank you."
Luffy was on the Sunny, fishing alongside Usopp and Chopper. Brook was nearby, playing on his guitar. Bortolomeo was working up the courage to ask if he could go fishing too. Nami was in her study, Sanji in the kitchen, Robin was searching the two ships with Ace for Rachel and Missy. Franky was below Sunny's deck in his workshop. Sabo and Hack were sparring on the Nunya. Zoro was taking a nap up against Sunny's mast. Law was studying the books that Chopper had in his office.
"Luffy! Can you help us with something?" Missy's voice called.
The captain of the Strawhats looked behind him to see both his sisters approaching. Rachel held a brightly colored object in her hand. "What's up?" he asked.
"We were hoping you could help us test a new invention of ours," Missy went on. She made a motion to what Rachel was holding. "All you have to do is put this on."
"Why can't one of you do it?" Usopp asked.
"We both need a nuetral perspective," Missy explained. "We wouldn't be able to get that if one of us was wearing it." Usopp nodded as it seemed to make sense.
Luffy jumped to his feet then. "Of course I'll help," he grinned. "How do I put it on?" Rachel then helped Luffy into the vest-like clothing. "It's kind of weird," Luffy said. "It's pushing my arms away from me."
"That does seem to be a problem," Missy mused. She had a finger to her chin as she seemed to be studying him. "Turn around in a circle, we need to see every angle." Luffy did as he was directed to.
"I'm not feeling it," Rachel finally spoke. "I just don't see how it will work. Hey Luffy, stand up on the rail. Maybe looking at it from below will help." Luffy did what she said. "Hmmm," she approached him slowly. "Turn around very slowly, I need to see the full effect." Luffy slowly started to turn around. When he was facing the sea and away from Rachel he suddenly pitched forward and fell into the water. Rachel had hit him on the back hard enough to knock him off balance. Usopp and Chopper were panicking. Zoro leapt to his feet at the noise. Judging by Usopp and Chopper's reactions someone fell in the water. He ran over and jumped in, not bothering to see who it was.
Rachel was smirking at her success. Missy was laughing her head off. "You were right," she managed. "I was going to love that."
"How could you do that!?" Nami yelled. She had come out just in time to see Rachel push Luffy. "Don't you know that Luffy's weak in the water and will drown?"
"Of course I know," Rachel said. "But he's not going to drown."
"Because Zoro will save him," Usopp snapped.
"Look again Pinocchio," Rachel pointed. "Is Luffy sinking? Has Zoro reached him yet?" The crew looked into the water once again. Luffy was blinking up at them, bobbing up and down with the waves. Zoro floated next to him, a perplexed look on his face.
Luffy's eyes suddenly widened to an unbelievable width. "I'm cured!" he yelled.
Missy nearly fell on the deck she was laughing so hard. Rachel could not contain her own laughter at this point. Everyone that hadn't been on the deck were now there, wondering what all the commotion was about. Ace and Robin arrived last. "So this is what you meant," Robin whispered to Ace. Ace sighed and nodded his head.
"Tell me Luffy," Rachel asked after catching her breath. "Can you move your arms?"
Luffy blinked then shook his head. "Nope," he answered.
"Does it feel like you're tired?" Missy continued the questioning.
"Actually it does," Luffy admitted.
"Then you're not cured," both said at the same time.
"That vest we put on you isn't a new experiment Luffy," Rachel explained. "It's called a life jacket. It's meant to keep someone's head above the water, especially if they loose consciousness. As long as you wear that, you won't sink. Devil fruit user or not."
"That's incredible," Nami mused. She was leaning over the rail, trying to get a better look. "How does it work?"
Both Rachel and Missy started to laugh nervously at this point. The two avoided making eye contact with anyone. "Very carefully," Rachel answered vaguely.
Ace started laughing at this point. "That backfired on you two, didn't it?" He was fully enjoying this now. It wasn't very often that he got to see these two taken off guard.
"Luffy," Robin called out. "You should probably get out of the water."
"I want to swim some more," Luffy complained. "I don't get to just enjoy the water."
"First off, you're not technically swimming. Second, you do realize that there are sea kings in these waters right?" Missy asked.
"Enjoy your bath 'Sharkbait'," Rachel teased.
"We can go back on board now Zoro," Luffy decided. He was nodding his head, as if it had been his idea. Zoro sighed, but dragged his captain back to the Sunny.
"So why did you two make us think Luffy was going to drown?" Nami asked.
"It wasn't so much for all of you," Rachel explained. "We only wanted to scare the crab-"
"Rachel," Missy hissed.
"Out of Luffy."
"Well it worked," Usopp nodded. He then looked to Chopper and Brook. "Did you see the look on his face as he fell?" He made a face as he imitated the expression Luffy had as he fell. The three of them then burst into laughter.
Sanji strode into the middle of the group. "I can't really say he didn't have that coming," he said. He held out a fruity beverage towards Nami. He had another that he offered to Robin. The two of them accepted Sanji's attention without much thought.
Sanji went to look back down to Luffy when the sight of Missy and Rachel finally registered with him. When they had met the day before, Ace had been always blocking his view in some way or another. He hadn't really paid that much attention, what with being reunited with Robin and all that. Hearts now filled his vision as he rushed to the two.
Zoro tossed Luffy up onto the deck. He made his way over the side as well. He was wringing out his robe when Sanji's over exagerations drew his attention. His spine snapped taunt when he saw how close the 'Love Cook' was to Rachel. Without a word, he stormed off in that direction. Nami started nudging Robin excitedly. "Here we go," she whispered. Once she had Robin's attention, Nami pointed to where the action was going to take place. Missy and Rachel had been trying to make their way back to their ship when Sanji went up to them. So they were on the other side of the Sunny. On his way in that direction, Zoro stopped long enough to grab his swords. Without a word, two of them were drawn.
Sanji, sensing something not right, moved away from the sisters. Zoro got between him and them before he swung his sword. "What's the matter with you Moss-head?" he demanded.
"Is there a woman that you don't flirt with?" Zoro asked instead. Sanji wasn't able to get another word in as Zoro pressed the advantage. The fight, being a normal sight, only caused Luffy to laugh and the others to sigh.
Law and Sabo approached the two women. Sabo had the life jacket in his hand. "Do you have any more of these?" Sabo asked.
"Only two more," Missy admitted. "They're stowed away in a compartment on BB. That one is used mostly with LB."
"So you use them often?" Law asked. When the two nodded he continued. "Then why not make more and sell them? I'm sure that you would make a bigger profit than what you do now with the solar power."
"Here's the thing," Rachel laughed. "You see, we don't actually know how they're made. They came from our home, we just borrowed them. When we got lost, we weren't able to find a way back home."
"Couldn't you find it on a map?" Nami asked.
Ace chose this moment to interrupt. "So how was it getting in the water again Luffy?" he asked. He was pushing Luffy between the group as he headed towards the Nunya. Rachel and Missy took this as an opportunity to bolt to the relative safety of their ship where they knew of places to hide without being found.
"Now that was interesting," Robin mused. "They are unable to return to their home island, yet they have a fine ship that can easily sail anywhere they wish." Nami was paying attention to the other only female Strawhat Pirate. "It makes me wonder, where exactly it is that they come from."
