Josh gets up to intercom the two hires asking them to bring her to him. They heed his command escorting her to their quarters. She still needs assistance walking as the drug they gave her is still in the wearing off stage. She walks in with her arms hooked to her assailants; head drooped forward, with her dark tresses falling over her face, trying to steady herself.
Josh turns around so all the Graysons are facing her directly. She takes one step towards them barely able to lift her head from its grogginess.
Fury and disdain wash over Josh as his jaw tightens, his eyes darken and his fists clench, "Emily?!"
Chapter 38: What Will Become of Emily?
Maya POV
"It's been hours dad! She's not here. No one's seen her. It's like she just vanished!" I say nursing my emotional headache.
"Maya, she has to be here. The airport security is doing their best…"
I stand up pointing a finger in my father's face, "Doing their best! If they were doing their best then they would've found her by now!"
"Maya, calm down," my mother puts an arm around my waist trying to redirect me.
"Mom, stop! Just stop both of you!" I cover my face with my hands trying desperately to keep it together.
"Look, Maya, I get it, but it's time to get the police involved," my father says what I've been thinking until…
Narrator POV
"What the fuck! Emily fucking Sullivan!" Josh shouts! Then he looks at his employees, "How could you screw this up?!"
"We grabbed the girl in the picture Sir. We did exactly as you instructed."
"You grabbed the wrong girl!" He screams furiously!
"Enough." Miriam takes control of the situation.
Everyone stops their arguing upon her command.
"This mistake is hardly a mistake at all," she says calmly with an added chill behind each word.
"Mother! How could this," he points at Emily, "not be a mistake!"
"Joshua, let your mother speak," Joseph raises his hand with its palm facing outward moving it slowly forward and back needing his son to be calm.
Josh takes heed of his father's action knowing he must not interrupt his mother again.
"Joshua, you are to call Maya and tell her you have Emily. Let the girl talk to her to confirm what you are telling her. You are then to explain your demands otherwise Maya shall never see her precious girlfriend again," she says coldly with absolutely no emotion whatsoever.
Josh looks to his father making sure it is okay for him to speak. Joseph nods his approval.
"What do you wish me to say to her, mother?"
"Tell her you have Emily. Tell her under no circumstances is she to contact the police. Tell her if she wants to see her Emily then she will be ready to board our plane upon its arrival back to the states. Only she is to board that plane. If she does exactly as she is told to do then no harm will come to her girlfriend. Am I clear?" she states like a commanding officer in a time of war.
"I understand mother," Josh says calmly.
"Good. Make the call," she directs.
Maya's cell phone rings…
"Hello? Emily!" she says with hopefulness in her voice which quickly turns to panic.
"No Maya. It's Josh. But I do know where Emily is," he says with an air of arrogance.
Maya's hand covers her mouth in fear of what he might tell her next.
"Maya! Who is it?" her mother demands to know.
"Shush!" Maya scolds, holding up her finger to keep her parents quiet.
"Maya! Did you hear me?" Josh asks as silence is his only response.
"I'm here. And yes I heard you. Where is she?!" Maya speaks through clenched teeth.
"I have taken Emily far away. But if you do as I say, no harm will come to her," he says sounding much like his mother, Miriam.
"Harm? What are you talking about? How do I know you haven't harmed her already?" Maya needs to know Emily is safe.
Josh holds his phone to Emily's mouth, "Tell her you are fine."
"Maya! It's me! It's Emily! I'm okay but confused! I don't know what's happening!" she says with an amped shaky voice.
He takes the phone away from her and says, "That's all you get for now Maya."
"Emily! No!" Maya screams!
"Yes, Maya are you ready to hear your instructions," the coldness in his voice saddens her. He is not the same man. He is not the Josh Grayson she married.
"What! What do you need me to do?" She asks with a heavy heart.
"We have taken Emily out of the country. You will not contact the police otherwise you'll never see her again," he swiftly explains without any remorsefulness in his voice.
Tears of horror stream down Maya's face.
"The plane will arrive back in New York to refuel. You will get on that plane alone and it will bring you to her. Your flight leaves at midnight," his voice sounds so emotionally distant.
"How do I know you won't hurt her?" Maya needs reassurance.
"Maya, I'm not a bad person. I wouldn't hurt her…unless you give me reason to," he says this time with emotion, but negative emotion.
"Josh! Don't do this!" Maya begs.
"It's already done. Be ready to leave at midnight," Josh hangs up on her.
"Josh! Josh!" Maya calls out but it's too late, he's gone.
Maya squeezes her phone with a tightened grip and makes a fist with the other.
"Maya! What was that! What's going on!" her father takes her by her shoulders forcing her to look at him.
"Josh has Emily," she says sounding defeated.
"What?" her mother shouts in disbelief.
"He has her. I spoke to her. I have to do as he says or…"
"Or nothing! We're calling the police!" her father starts to dial 911.
"NO!" she grabs his phone out of his hand.
"Maya!"
"He said if the police got involved I would never see her again. He said I have to get on the Grayson plane at midnight and they will bring me to her," she restates what Josh told her to do.
"Are you crazy Maya?! I'm not letting you step one foot on that plane!" Her father yells protectively.
"He has Emily! And you will let me! You have no say!" she yells back with fervor.
"I don't like this Maya, I don't like this one bit," her mother rings her hands nervously.
"Mom, dad, don't call the Fields, don't call Ryan. I have to go to her. If he was going to hurt her he would have already. I have to do this. And I think you know that," she tries to explain her reasoning for going.
"Maya, this is kidnapping. The FBI needs to be involved. They will know what to do. And anyway Josh said to not contact the police; he said nothing about the FBI," her father seems rather pleased with himself.
Maya looks up at her father, his words resonating throughout her. She thinks, "He's right. Josh won't hurt her. I know that. I know that in my soul. My father is right. We need to call the FBI."
"Dad, okay. I can't do this on my own. I want to but the baby," she holds her tummy.
Her mom wraps her in her arms, "We'll get her honey. We'll get her."
"I'm still getting on that plane. Who knows where they might bring her if I don't. The FBI can probably locate the planes coordinates and…"
"Maya! I'm not letting you do anything until I speak with the FBI!" Her father scolds.
"You are dad. You're going to let me do this. I have to do this…"
The Grayson's private island…
"Emily is all set up in the East Wing. She can't escape even if she wanted to," Josh informs his parents.
"Does she have clean clothes?" Joseph asks.
"Everything she could possibly need is at her disposal except an escape route," Josh smiles raising his scotch before tossing it back.
Miriam daintily holds her glass of wine, "Make sure Ms. Sullivan is showered and dressed for dinner. After all, she is a guest in our home," she sips.
Emily lets the hot water spray against her groggy body. She needs her muscles to wake up and she needs her mind to have clarity again. She soaps up then rinses away the dirt but cannot rinse away this situation. Tears suddenly stream down her face. "How can this be happening?" She asks herself. She scrunches down wrapping her arms around herself leaning against the tile. Her cries become louder as she tries desperately to control her emotion. Several minutes go by before she is able to steady herself, the water continuing to soak her. She shakes her head needing desperately to concentrate on how she will get back to her Maya. She turns off the water stepping out of the shower wrapping a warm towel around her nude body. She walks into the bedroom. Darkness consumes her. It's decided. She'll do what she has to do to free herself from these people and their crazy…
New York…
"I've contacted an agent with the FBI. Maya, they can't intercede without proof that Emily was taken against her will," her father explains.
"What! She was taken out of the country!" She's astonished by the FBI's lack of interest in her girlfriend's kidnapping!
"We know that. But she is an adult and none of the footage on the security cameras suggests she was taken against her will," her father tries to explain the FBI's point of view.
"I'm still going," Maya says with arms folded across her chest.
"I wish you wouldn't," her father says finally sounding calm yet broken.
"I have to dad and you know that. You would do the same for mom."
"I know. But you're my baby and you're carrying my granddaughter."
"They won't hurt me because I am carrying your granddaughter."
"She's right Frank. They won't hurt her but that doesn't mean you should get on that plane Maya."
"Mom, I would be saying the same thing if it were me in your position but…"
"I get it. I do. But I don't like it," her mother stares at the floor unable to make eye contact with her daughter.
"I'm going to the ladies room to freshen up, okay?" Maya says needing some space.
Her parents nod and watch her walk away from them.
"Frank, are you really going to let her get on that plane?" Eva says shocked by her husband agreeing to all this.
"Yes, the FBI told me to."
"What?" She asks surprised by this information.
"They want Maya on that plane but they don't want her to know that the FBI will be monitoring it and planning their rescue."
"Why the hell not?!" Eva demands more so out of concern for her daughter's and Emily's welfare.
"Because she could unknowingly give them away and then we might never see them again," He tries to explain his decision.
"Frank, I don't like this!"
"Look, I wouldn't have agreed to it if the FBI hadn't assured me that they will save them."
"I still don't like this."
"Think about it, what experience does Josh have with kidnapping? None. He won't see them coming. Maya and Emily will be safe. We have to trust the FBI. We have to trust Maya. We just have to…," He says trying to convince his wife as well as himself.
The Grayson Island…
"Emily, how good of you to join us. Please have a seat," Miriam acts as though nothing unusual is taking place.
"Like I had a choice."
The guards pull out her chair and she sits plopping herself down giving Miriam a look of disdain.
"Come, come now Emily, why the dour face?"
"You know why?"
"Eat, Emily, before it gets cold. You'll need your strength as you never know when your next meal will be," she says as a matter of fact.
Emily thinks for a moment. If they wanted to kill her they already would have. She decides that she does need her strength for Maya and the baby. She picks up her fork and begins to eat while keeping a watchful eye on Miriam.
"Good girl. You need to be well nourished for the arrival of our guest. You wouldn't want her to think you were being mistreated, now would you?" she stares down Emily who feels her power like none other she's ever felt before.
"Guest?" she asks just before putting the forkful of food into her mouth. Her reaction to the taste tells Miriam that it is quite delicious.
"Why, Maya of course."
Emily drops her fork which clanks against the plate, "Maya?"
"Oh yes. She will be arriving tomorrow. I suggest you be on your best behavior Ms. Sullivan," Miriam warns with her tone.
"You aren't going to hurt her are you?" she asks worriedly.
"Don't be silly child. Maya is carrying my granddaughter," she slips a petite portion of food into her mouth.
"Then what?"
Joseph and Josh say nothing as they too have no idea what Miriam is about to say.
"Maya will have her baby and you'll be free to go."
"That's five months from now."
"Well then, I hope you enjoy your stay."
"But…"
"Enough dear. Eat your dinner before it gets cold."
Emily knows there is much more to this but she can't think straight. All she can think about is seeing Maya tomorrow!
The dinner goes on as if nothing unusual is taking place. Emily eats slowly discreetly looking around this island palace memorizing doorways and windows and armed guards. She doesn't know yet how they will escape she just knows that they will…
New York…
"Please fasten your seat belts as we are about to depart the gate," the pilot says over the intercom.
Maya takes a deep breath letting it out slowly, "I'm coming for you Emily. I'm coming for you…"
