Arthur was glad that Layla agreed and already the questions he had was forming in his mind.
"By the way, I thought I'll correct you first; I am a witch not a sorceress."
The blonde frowned, "Aren't they the same?"
"Of course not! Witches are females born with magic but sorceresses are females who have to study magic in order to practice it."
Arthur blinks his eyes in confusion, "People can be born with magic?"
"Yes, some people may have the gift of magic from birth. Although there are very few of us now though."
"Why?"
Layla folded her arms across her chest, making the swell of her breasts more prominent in the cleavage baring, snow white top she was wearing. Arthur gulped seeing this, partly because he had to focus on looking at her lips and not on her breasts like a proper gentleman and a married man should and the other part was that he sensed that she was upset and giving him a glare underneath her hood.
Finally, she spoke, "It is a known fact that your father killed off anything close to mention about magic thus naturally some of my brothers and sisters were a result of that."
"I-I"
"People born with magic are extremely rare." she says, promptly cutting him off.
Arthur gulped, his instinct telling him to be more mindful of his words, "I see...so what do you call males born with magic?"
"Warlocks" answered the witch solemnly.
Arthur nodded, committing the term to memory, "What else can you tell me about witches?"
Layla, deep in thought wondered what to tell him. It was a vague question so she could tell him anything. As she thought, she stopped folding her arms, relaxing into a comfortable position by moving her hands behind her back, clasped together and leaning back against the tree.
"It is a known fact that all High Priestesses are all women born with magic" she says finally.
Arthur's eyes widened, "B-but if what you say is true then that makes Morgana a witch."
Layla nods her head, "Yes she is. That is the requirement of the High Priestesses. All of them has to be born witches."
Arthur leaned his back against the tree, looking at Layla in disbelief, "B-but that can't be!"
"And why do you say so?" she asks calmly.
"Because I grew up with Morgana! I would know if she was born with magic wouldn't I?!"
Layla frowned, "Are you sure you would know?"
Arthur opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out.
"Have you ever noticed anything particular about Morgana while she lived with you in the castle at Camelot?" the witch asks gently.
Arthur closed his mouth and thought. It took him a while to answer.
"Since she turned 13, she always had trouble sleeping and when she ever did manage to sleep, she would sometimes wake up either screaming or crying or really shaken up. Eventually, she started taking sleeping potions from Gaius and it worked. She couldn't dream which was a side effect of the potion and that's what she wanted, she was just glad she could finally rest you know? However, as Morgana got older the less the potion had an effect which resulted in making Morgana very jumpy during the day after a dream. Almost every year, Gaius had to make a stronger sleeping potion for Morgana to take. She never talked about her dreams."
Layla blinked, "Never?"
"Well...I have overheard once or twice before taking the sleeping potions that she mentioned seeing war like swords clashing and all, blood, tears and sometimes her father. She described the dreams as nightmares. Later on, she took up sword fighting so that she could defend herself."
Layla nodded her head slowly and urged Arthur to go on.
"When Morgana was jumpy; she looked pale, tired, her eyes darted around the room as if she was expecting some sort of danger barging in at any moment and almost always she came to tell me about her dream."
The hooded witch deadpanned, "I thought you said she didn't tell you what her dreams were?"
"Right. Before the sleeping potions, she wouldn't tell me anything. But after that, when the potion started losing effect and she had dreams, she came to tell me about them that I was in them. She said I was in danger and I had to be careful. I usually ignored them though and called her paranoid but I did listen just to appease Morgana because she looked so genuinely worried about my safety."
"So were you?"
Arthur was confused, "Sorry?"
"What happened when you ignored her warnings?" Layla asks instead.
"Well...some that I do remember are the times that I chanced upon vicious bandits, a huge hungry bear and someone trying to kill me or kidnap me."
Layla leaned her back against the tree, studying Arthur carefully, "And you never found this strange? That Morgana managed to predict these incidents?"
"She was vague, she just told me to be careful and keep my guard up. To be honest, I wished she just told me what it was exactly but she wouldn't, saying I wouldn't even take her seriously to begin with."
Layla smirked, "Ah yes, you did confess to that earlier on. Do you ever listen to anyone besides your father?"
"Gaius is one. He is the Court Physician and a friend of my father's. He is also like a second father to me." Arthur answers, smiling a little.
Layla nodded and pursed her lips in thought but she couldn't think by herself for long because Arthur spoke again.
"You believe that Morgana predicted the future dangers in her dreams?"
"I believe so. She didn't give you details because it would seem odd and suspicious if she knew dangers that would befall upon you in the imminent future."
"But still she could have told me..."
Layla rolled her eyes underneath her hood, "You just admitted that you don't pay any heed to what she says. Of course she wouldn't confide in you about her dreams!"
Arthur sighed, "Guess you're right."
"Of course I am" scoffed the witch.
"Wow, you just reminded me of my manservant, Merlin. He is always telling me to listen and pay heed to warnings."
"Obviously it seems that you are still having those problems" says Layla, smiling playfully now.
"Hey now-"
"-oh shush! You know I am right!"
"Now you really are like Merlin! You're cutting me off!"
They laughed together and privately, they had to admit it was nice, laughing with one another.
Layla was the first to stop, "Anyway it seems Morgana is a Seer. Interesting really, there aren't many who has this ability."
"What is a Seer?" Arthur asks.
"A seer is a person that is able to predict the future either through dreams or naturally through reflective surfaces like mirrors or water without scrying."
"And what is scrying?"
"Scrying is the practice of harnessing your magic to see the past, present or future in the reflective surfaces. It takes a lot magic but for someone who is a Seer, it is no feet for them at all."
"Can you scry?" Arthur asks curiously.
"Yes I can although I usually use it only to see the present to check on my husband."
"Why? Predicting the future sounds useful."
"No. It ends up causing more trouble that it really is worth."
"How do you mean?"
"What you see may not be as it seems. That is a fact of life and especially so when you see the future. For example, a friend you know passes a sharp knife to someone you do not recognize. What will you think of first?"
"That something is wrong?" Arthur guessed.
"Exactly but what if that person you know was just helping out the other person by sharpening his knife for him?"
"Ahhh so that's what you mean by 'what you see may not be as it seems'".
"That's right. That's why Seers have to be very careful of their interpretation of what they see."
"I understand now" Arthur tells her, nodding his head.
"There is also the chance that you could just set yourself up for a self fulfilling prophecy."
The blue-eyed man was confused, "How do you mean?"
"Well...let's say you happen to find out that someone you trust will kill you in the near future."
Arthur paled at the idea but Layla went on.
"Now, you would treat this person with suspicion, avoid him and mistrust him completely correct?"
"Yes..."
"As a result of that, that person will become bitter and resent you for treating him so coldly without reason so if he hates you enough, he could very well set out to kill you out of hatred."
Arthur was stunned, "That would make my actions towards him lead to-"
"-his very motivation to kill you." Layla finished.
"I see it now...wow...I try to avoid something and it ends up happening..."
"That is why it is called a self fulfilling prophecy."
"Wow this is incredible. My father and Gaius were always tight-lipped to tell me about magical things but now thanks to you, I am learning so much."
Layla smiled, "Your welcome so what other questions do you have?"
