Chapter 6
Meredith was sat around a table with the other interns. They were all talking about the case they were on that day. George in Neuro, Cristina in Cardio as usual, Izzie in General and Alex in Peds and Meredith was in the pit, doing sutures. She knew you should never say the pit was dead or the pit would get slammed. It wasn't dead but it did have just sutures.
She nibbled on a salad leaf - Derek's healthy eating was rubbing off on her. Then her pager went off and she was forced to head back the pit, her lunch discarded.
She waited for the elevator her foot tapping. When it arrived it was empty apart from him. He grinned, after the day she'd had she was in desperate need of a hug from him and hoped the elevator would stay clear till she got off.
Stepping forward the silver doors closed behind her and only then did Derek pull her into his arms. They stayed like in silence, his face buried in her hair until the ding sounded for his floor, he kissed her and then the doors slid open admitting him to his floor.
"See you in a couple of hours," he whispered.
"Looking forward to it," she answered.
She headed to the pit and was soon stuck with her sutures till her shift ended. When she was told to go she headed to the intern locker room. Cristina was tired and full of a cloud, and Izzie was just gushing about Derek. Then as Meredith pulled of her scrub top Bailey came in.
"Shepherd needs a new intern," said Bailey.
They all turned to volunteer Bailey saw the dreamy look on Izzie's face - she was out, Shepherd won't want to work with a fan girl, Cristina looked like she was about to throw up.
"Grey hemispherectomy OR with Dr Shepherd," said Bailey.
Meredith nodded as she pulled her scrub top back on.
Meredith headed out.
"Yang go home, Stevens stop gossiping," ordered Bailey, as she left.
Derek smiled under his mask as he saw Meredith come into his OR. She'd worked him the last three days, he liked working with her not because she was his girlfriend, she was the intern to beat, she was good at her job - probably because of her mother. However she was different to her mother, Derek had meant Ellis when he was a resident she was very strict, clinical and professional. Meredith was better because she was warm and caring as well as professional.
"What happened with George?" she asked, quietly.
"Accused Dr Taylor of drinking," answered Derek. "I stuck by Taylor."
"Do you think you were right?" she asked.
"I don't know," he answered.
She feel silent as she watched Derek woke. It was halfway though the surgery that Derek noticed Jamie waking up and every time he went to say something he would trail off, Meredith would finish his sentence.
"Hey Taylor her anesthesia is awful light," commented Derek, as he nodded to Meredith to look at round the drapes. "Taylor!"
"Dr Taylor," called Meredith, as she headed round. "He's asleep."
"Dr Taylor!" shouted Derek. "TAYLOR!"
"Oh jeez Shepherd sorry," apologized Taylor, as he woke up.
"He was right wasn't he?" asked Derek.
"I just dozed off. Steph get me a coffee please," said Dr Taylor
"No Steph page for someone else," said Derek. "Taylor get out."
Meredith came back to Derek's side. "Guess you got your answer."
He nodded.
The rest of the surgery went smoothly and once finished Derek motioned to George to meet him in the hall way. He slyly flirted with Meredith as they scrubbed out and then went to apologize to George.
After the surgery Meredith had an uneventful hour charting. However a little while after the hour was up Meredith found herself back at Derek's eating steak, fries and salad.
She was lost in her thoughts about Derek and the future when a hand landed on her arm, the fry she had in her hand went flying and she jumped.
"Lost in thought?" asked Derek with a grin.
"Hmm," answered Meredith sheepishly.
Derek chuckled.
"What?" asked Meredith.
"Just your reaction when you came out of your thoughts," said Derek.
"I was just thinking," smiled Meredith.
"I could see that," smiled Derek. "About?"
"Me, you the future," answered Meredith.
"Well why don't we enjoy the time we have now. Food, wine and each other." he smiled.
"Cheers to that," smiled Meredith clicking her wine glass against his.
