Chapter 34

*Mia's POV*

Silently I followed Darren and Mr. Crepsley stopping at the hotels that they stopped at and the time they finally started leaving society I followed at a distance only going by my sense of smell to track them from enough away that they wouldn't notice me.

I adjusted my duffel bag on my shoulder as I looked out on the barren waste land that surrounded me. I stopped and took a large in hail trying to find Darren and Mr. Crepsley's scent again, and followed my nose till a got close enough that I had to stop and let them get further ahead, this is how it went since I started following them.

I got closer as I caught a whiff of a new scent and watched as the two walked into a small cave that was set into what appeared to be a man made mound. I took a large inhale again trying to remember why it was that this scent smells so familiar. I stood for a minute and realized that this was the smell of human blood.

At this realization I felt my throat close up and practically wanted throw up as the memories of the Christmas from six years ago resurfaced once again. I knew that as the sun was coming up that Mr. Crepsley and Darren would not come out till tonight. I waited outside the opening of the cave and then when I heard deep calm breathing I decided that it was safe to look around and see exactly what it was like in there.

I decided that to be on the safe side I would leave my bag outside in one of the bushes nearby, and enter in the shape of a wolf seeing as how I have seen a few of them wondering around lately. Once My bones have finished setting themselves back into the proper places of this new shape I silently padded my way into the cave that smelt of blood.

What I found was shelves of human blood on the shelves and then there were coffins stacked up, all except for two which were laid on the floor one close to the other. My guess was that Mr. Crepsley and Darren were sleeping in them. I noticed Darren's bag on the floor and began pawing at it revealing only his Dairy. I shook my wolfen head and walked back out of the cave glad to step into the fresh air outside.

I walked away to get my stuff and in my wolfen form I Could smell a small trace of human blood a little ways away yet in the direction that Darren and Mr. Crepsley have been traveling in. Getting to my bag and picking it up in my muzzle and started following my nose to the next blood filled cave.

I follow the scent with my duffel bag hanging from my mouth just barely dragging on the snow covered ground. It had been another day and was nearing the second night when I found another of the caves. This cave was set into a mound with a small miniature forest set on top, and I mean miniature it had only a hand full of trees.

I wandered into the cave and to my surprise saw a vampire sitting atop a coffin rummaging through a small bag most likely containing bottles for stored blood, based on what Mr. Crepsley does, and what I learned about not bringing anything other than a few bottles of blood.

The Vampire looked up from his bag and the look of shock on his face could only be explained by the wolf he saw with a bag held in its jaw. I realized how shocking my appearance must've been to this vampire and turned to walk back out the way that I had come.

Once outside of the cave I made my way to the top of the mound made sure I was hidden in the trees before I Feel comfortable with shifting back to my original shape. Once in my original shape I feel the bitter wind on my bare skin and rush to find some clothes within my bag.

While slipping my large loose sweatshirt I slowly make my way into the cave my duffle bag slung over my shoulder. The vampire once again looks up and his eyes fall onto the duffle bag that he no doubt recognized from the wolf's mouth.

"Did you get that from a Wolf?" The man asked as he walked over to where I stood. I thought of how to answer his question seeing as how vampires couldn't read and Mr. Crepsley could only have a conversation with me if I used the same few cards over again or if someone was there to read it to him.

Not knowing how to answer I just shook my head. The vampire cocked his head to the side confused with my answer. "Really cause I just saw a wolf in here with that very bag in its mouth." He stated as he took a step back getting a good look at me.

I probably looked like some confused girl who had walked out too far from the city and had gotten lost or something, but I could tell he was getting wary of the company that had found him. When he saw that I was making no move forward he stopped and asked me another question.

"Where did you come from?"

I just stood there not sure how to answer without the use of my notepad so I just waiting for him to ask the usual question that came when I didn't answer. The two of us stood for a few minutes in silence before he finally spoke again.

"Girl, Can you even speak?" I was shocked at how flatly he said that and to answer his question I just shook my head and moved to sit on top of one of the coffins. The whole way I could feel the Vampire's eyes following me.

After I sat down the two of us sat in silence and every once in awhile he would ask a yes or no question to fill in the silence. The one question that I knew he must've wanted to ask was avoided for awhile and finally just as the moon was rising and as I stood up to leave the cave and get some sleep the question that I was expecting all day was asked.

"Girl, Are you a Vampire?" I stood frozen to the spot as I slowly shook my head with my back turned to him. There was silence as he thought about what to ask next. "No human could ever be strong enough to survive out here alone….." he paused. "But just to be sure are you human?"

Again, ever so slowly I shook my head and started walking out again. I stopped when the vampire behind me spoke one last time. "Well if you are not a vampire and you are not a human. What are you?"

My foot stopped mid step as I began to even ask myself that. 'What am I?' I didn't even know the answer anymore. I just shook my head, and stood rooted to the spot that I stopped at. The two of us stood in silence as the vampire took in my answer.

"You're even questioning it huh?" He asked more to fill the void I think than anything. I nodded my head all the same though and was shocked to find that when I looked up and met his gaze I saw a look of concern in his eyes.

"It's hard…" There was a short pause as he thought of how to continue his statement. "Not knowing who you are, or where you belong." He finished, I adverted my gaze to the ground as I nodded slowly in agreement.

The two of us stood in silence for a little while longer until I finally made my way to the exit, this time the vampire said nothing and allowed me to leave the small cave. Outside the cave I made my way back to the top of the mound and found a comfortable spot sleep for the night.

I wrapped myself in one of my blankets and curled up tightly on the ground, ready to go to bed and maybe a good night's sleep would help me sort through all these jumbled thoughts running through my head.

*Dorene's POV*

I looked around the vast white nothingness that surrounded me happy to see a familiar sight that would soon lead up to the meeting place of the Vampires. I was glad once we left the cities and even more so once the towns where left behind us as well. But with the joy of seeing these familiar vast settings also came pain because by leaving the cities and towns I was also putting my search for Damian on hold.

The two of us have been walking toward the mountain for almost a week now and I noticed that Gavner seemed to be walking just a touch bit faster than usual. I wanted to ask him about it but decided that I would know soon enough.

I noticed that as we neared a way station Gavner began slowing down and I could tell that he was trying to breathe a little softer, as if trying to sneak up on someone. I didn't make such as effort as to hide my presence and I hung back a little bit as I inhaled through my nose as caught a hit of something that shouldn't have been there.

I tried to warn Gavner but he would listen and continued forward, at one point I grabbed a hold of his arm and tried with all my half vampire strength to hold him back and explain but he easily shrugged me off and continued forward.

Something was off and he was too distracted to realize it. He continued into the cave while I slowly followed behind unsure about weather what I smelt was really what I smelt or just a trick my nose was playing on me.

I noticed that morning was on its way and wanted to get whatever Gavner Was up to out of the way. As Gavner finally ducked into the cave and I was finally able to see that just like the first time I met them Gavner was trying to scare the two, but he was so preoccupied with his task that he didn't smell it, the blood that was spilt in the cave, that wasn't human.

Unlike the first time, this time Gavner managed to scare Mr. Crepsley and Darren, only I think they thought he was the killer coming back to the scene of the crime. Mr. Crepsley cursed loudly and Darren let out a loud gasp and he turned and starred at Gavner.

Darren noticed me standing behind Gavner and as I walked out of the cave allowing Mr. Crepsley and Gavner to talk Darren followed close behind. I walked to the top of the mound first, surprised to hear Gavner and Mr. Crepsley making their way out of the cave still talking.

The four of us made our way to the top of the mound seeing as how the sun was peeking out over the horizon. The four of us including to my surprise two small people in blue-ish gray cloaks following close behind Darren and Mr. Crepsley.

Once a fire was going for our two mentors and they got comfortable and began catching up Darren and I walked to a stream that he had seen a while back to fill up our containers with water.

Down at the stream Darren and I sat in silence I tried to think of something to say when suddenly Darren spoke first. "So Dorene," Darren dragged just those two words as if he wasn't sure how to continue. "What made you decide to become a vampire?"

My frozen hands held under the water slightly twitched at the question. I tried to think of how to answer his question. "Well it's not like I really planned it, it just sort of happened you know?" I ended my answer like a question because I wasn't sure if it was true or if I was the only one who didn't plan it.

At this thought I remembered what Steve had said about Darren betraying him, maybe now was my chance to learn the truth about what really happened. "Yeah you never really can plan these things, can you? They just pop up behind you." Darren said as he placed his hand into the frigid water again.

"You really can't," I started but froze when I realized that he may not want to tell me what happened, but still I continued forward "Darren what happened to make you decide to be a vampire?"

Darren didn't look at me as he began answering me. "I only did it to help my friend…. But he just thinks I betrayed him, because he was the one that wanted to be a vampire." I was shocked at Darren's answer because Steve had told me all these things that made Darren sound like an evil person. But what I find is a friend who gave up his humanity to save a friend.

"What happened to make you have to save him?" I pressed forward to try and get as much information on this subject as I could. Darren looked at me. "How about you tell me why you did it first." Darren said as he took his now red hand out of the water.

I was now the one to look down. "Well I lived in foster homes all my life and the one I was in at the time was horrible so I ran away…" I paused wondering if I should tell Darren about meeting Steve but decide it would be best to withdraw that bit of information.

"Then as I was sleeping in the woods trying to stay hidden from search parties Gavner stumbled upon me sleeping and after that we started traveling together. One thing led to another and then I was blooded." I finished quietly.

"Now you tell me." I added quickly before Darren could change the subject.

Darren now turned his gaze downward. "Well my friend and I had gotten tickets for the cirque, the one that I travel with now, and went to the show, there we saw all the performances and Mr. Crepsley for the first time…."

Darren continued through his story explaining how after the show Steve stayed behind to ask Mr. Crepsley to turn him into a vampire and then how he had stolen Mr. Crepsley's performing Spider that he was bringing along with them to Vampire Mountain. Darren explained how the spider had bitten Steve and how the only way to get Mr. Crepsley to help Steve was to become his assistant.

At the end of Darren's story I found myself wiping away tears from my eyes knowing that for a while I believed that Darren was the type of person who would betray his friend. Darren gently pulled me closer to himself and began whispering calming things to my trying to calm me down.

I pulled away from him and starred into his eyes wanting so bad to apologize for believing Steve but he wouldn't understand he doesn't know that I met his onetime friend who in turn sent me to find him friend and lead him back to Steve.

Darren suddenly pulled me to him again only this time his planted a small kiss on my cheek. I starred I shock at Darren. "Don't worry about it; I'm happy with my decision even though Steve thinks I did this to spite him." Darren said as he starred at me.

I opened my mouth to say something when out of the corner of my eye I spotted wolves coming closer on the other side of the stream. I eyed the wolves curiously and suddenly the largest one jumped across the stream and knocked Darren to the ground.

I started to worry that the wolf was attacking Darren when suddenly to my surprise it was licking his cheek just like a loyal dog would.

Though his laughter, Darren just barely managed to speak. "I think I want to keep him."

A.N. So yay Update after who knows how long and I realized two things.

1. Is the fact that I can't normally sit at my computer to type a chapter in one sitting unless it is usually passed 9 at night and my twin and I on week nights have to head to our bedroom at 8 so I normally don't type all that much during the week.

2. Is the fact that the song Monster by Skillet Fits Mia really well I am not kidding it amazes me just how much this song fits my character especially now that she has that dark side to her, and secrets to keep from Victoria Because of it.

So yeah due to the first revelation I now know what I need to save my money up for….. A laptop, or a Tablet. I think I would rather have the second one cause then I could use it to draw with as well. Welp nothing else much to say other than the fact that it is 11:48 where I am now and I am still wide awake.

Until next time Peace, Love, and Virtual Hugs
